Joey A Brett, MD

I love this doctor. He is patient, kind, knowledgeable, warm and takes time to answer questions –face to face. I appreciate this quality in an era when more physicians are glued to their computer screens, even as they are speaking with you! In short, Dr. Brett has a personal touch that is rare today. His office staff is helpful and friendly, and I also very much appreciate not being one of a waiting room full of patients, and being seen at the appointment time. I am happy to give him my highest recommendation!

Do not go to this doctor. His office is poorly managed and unless you want to spend endless hours with their billing department and your insurance provider telling you that Dr Brett’s office billed xy and z incorrectly you should avoid this office.
In addition, there is absolutely no availability to see this doctor. I saw him last January for an initial visit. The next available date he had to see me was in May for a follow up. When I came that day in May, Dr. Brett wasn’t there and didn’t bother to call and cancel. He just had a note on the door. So I then rescheduled for the following February because that was the next possible date he had open.
He may be a decent doctor (which I can’t verify) but he has no availability and you will spend a ton of money to see him because his billing department cant figure out how to deal with a large PPO (Aetna). My blood work, which should have been free cost me $ 145. Their billing said they never saw this before and she said she doesnt deal with Aetna much. What a waste of time and money.
His hours are terrible and his office staff is a complete joke (they don’t have email and you have to communicate via fax). Do not waste your time and energy trying to see this doctor. I have never dealt with a doctor that was this unprofessional.

I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Brett. He has been my primary care doc for years now. He always takes his time, addresses all my concerns, is very thorough, very knowledgable, and very caring. Office staff is great — never an issue with scheduling appointments, prescription refills, etc. Dr. Brett is in high demand so make your appointments for physical exams in advance, I think that there is somewhat of a wait time for an appointment — but that is not surprising given how hard it is to find a good Doc. However, if you have an issue or a pain of any kind you can be seen asap.

I was going to switch my health plan to a large HMO this year until I met Dr. Brett.
Dr. Brett was incredibly thorough and very friendly. This is the first time that I can recall not feeling as if the doctor was trying to get me out of there as quickly as possible. He answered my voluminous questions with patience and interest. The nurses and front office were very nice as well.

Went to this doctor because he is known to be LGBT friendly. I went specifically to get info on and possibly get on PREP. After our initial pleasant conversation I brought up PREP and his demeanor changed– he put his face down and was clearly angry. He spoke to me without looking at me and became preachy and judgmental like «you know it’s not a ticket to just be unsafe» — I am negative and I’ve stayed negative for 39 years. I think I know what I’m doing to stay safe. I don’t need a doctor to assume or accuse me of suddenly wanting to be unsafe. He put up all these barriers about tests I need to take and it would be over a month before I could even try PREP. He was actually discouraging in his tone and deliver. I left feeling very judged and very discouraged.

I saw Dr. Brett earlier this year, and didn’t go back.
Mainly my sentiments echo the complaints on here about his office staff.
While waiting for more than an hour in the waiting room, I heard the «ladies» behind the window complaining rudely and loudly about other patients private billing details, complaining about patients calling to complain about billing practices (and after my billing experience I can see why someone was complaining, and I’m sure I became one of those loud, unprivate complaints another patient probably heard recently through the window…) and being very rude to callers on the telephone and hanging up on them with much disgust. Most of this extreme unprofessionalism came from the staff with an English (or similar) accent — she had the attitude of a terrible English nanny, and would not shut up. I almost walked out, between that and the 1 hour wait time. She also kept going on and on about how some company was trying to sell Dr. Brett on the idea of Concierge healthcare plans and I knew what she was talking about simply from friends and family being kicked to the curb by their doctors who adopted this billing strategy. All of this made the visit quite unpleasant before I even saw the doctor.
But everyone loves the Dr. himself, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately, no doubt because of his schedule running behind by an hour, I felt that Dr. Brett rushed through my initial appointment, ignored much of what I brought to him, and he quickly and robotically sent me for bloodwork and another grueling sleep test and even though three previous doctors already put me through that and I had provided paperwork showing my diagnosis. On an unrelated note, that sleep test clinic I was referred to by Dr. Brett was very shady and refused to explain discrepancies in their pricing scheme without hanging up on me. I did not get it done, and ended up getting my therapy elsewhere.
6 months later I got a bill from Dr. Brett’s office for $ 150+ which wasn’t unexpected, but there was a line item of a $ 50 fee for a «no show» 6 weeks after my initial appointment. I was so disgusted with the way my first appointment went, I refused to schedule a follow up appointment that day, so I don’t know how that happened, and I sure didn’t agree to any no show fees.

I went to see this Doctor years ago by a referral from one of my close friends (ex-​bf) … I scheduled my appointment to see him because at that time I was living in the valley and was convenient for me and close to work/​home. Came to see him. He was ok. Nothing special. He ordered me some labs, and that was it. The consultation was my first appointment. It was for my yearly physical. Like 2 weeks later. A day before my follow up appointment I got a phone call. It was the office manager. She called me to cancel my appointment. I asked her «to cancel my appointment «why?. She responded «you know why»… I responded «I’m not sure what are you talking about. Why?». She said again «yes, you know why». «because you know (ex-boyfriend’s name)» … I was like «because I know my ex?. Of course I know him». at the time of my appointments my ex was dating this doctor. something that I knew because my ex told me. That’s how he knew about him … I realized that when I filled out the paperwork I wrote as an emergency the phone number of my ex… I’m not from this country and we remained good friends, and he referred me. I didn’t see anything wrong about it. But I guess they saw that and they didn’t like it and this was the reason for this unprofessional office to cancel my appointment. I hung up. I was furious. A doctor is going to cancel your appointment because you know somebody he /​she is dating ??? How stupid is that. And on top of that have this lady (office manager) get involved and talk to me like that. What kind of answer is: «you know why»? … I moved to West Hollywood not too long after that and met a nice gay doctor Dr. Mills on Sunset blvd. Such a sweetheart. Now I moved back to the valley. 5 years later. I obviously have somebody in my life, and remained good friends with my ex. That by the way he stopped dating this guy not too long after. I just remembered that I didn’t do anything. I was very young … Didn’t know much. Etc. I should have sue him for discrimination and unprofessionalism. We are gay. But that doesn’t mean that we need to attack each other and act like a soap opera character. Very disappointed. I don’t recommend this doctor at all. Be very careful because he mixes work and pleasure. Totally wrong. Btw the office is ghetto and outdated.

I’ve been going to Dr. Brett for almost 10 years. He saved my life. I am a Type II diabetic. My previous physician had prescribed an older insulin regimen and my glucose levels were all over the place. Dr. Brett switched me to a newer insulin therapy and I am now a healthy 61 year old with my diabetes under control. He is a primary care physician, a sole practitioner, and is the best of what people used to refer to as a «family doctor». I have found his staff to be friendly and very helpful. The demands of a sole medical practice today means a doctor’s staff is over burdened with paper work — so they don’t have a lot of time to chat. There are unfortunate realities with a small medical practice that mean they need to be focused on the task at hand; however, they are always professional and I couldn’t ask for a kinder staff.

I called Dr Brett’s office for a pre-​op exam (I was referred by my surgeon). The staff member I spoke to was real unfriendly. The first thing out of the girl’s mouth on the phone was, «there is a 300 dollar fee for the visit.» I said, «no problem.» The second thing out of her mouth was, «the labs etc will cost additional money.» I said, «ok.» She then said I needed to come one week prior to surgery, I said «fine. «She gave me an appointment date 4 business days prior to my surgery date. Abruptly she changed it, saying «no— I need to give you another date — «and gave me an appointment date 3 business days prior to my surgery. Then she added I would have to go to Quest or somewhere else and get my own labs done after my exam with Dr Brett. I was wondering what I was paying this place for if I had to run all over town to get my labs etc done… I told her I thought that she was cutting it short, giving me relatively little time to schedule a separate appointment at a lab to get the blood work done after this exam, and asked if I could get an earlier appointment. I was booking this pre-​op appointment two months in advance to avoid scheduling problems.
As a registered nurse, I anticipated that there may potentially be a need for more labs or other tests based on the exam findings or initial lab work. So I knew with the time frame she was giving me, that might make this difficult for my surgeon, and could force us to reschedule surgery. Yet she insisted they did not need to give me an earlier appointment. She put me on hold when I asked her for an earlier appointment date. I just hung up and called another PCP who told me they could do everything (including labs) in the office, 7 days prior, no problem. As a nurse case manager, I am unfortunately used to dealing with non –clinical front desk people who often have no clue what the actual clinical needs of patients are; and I will be sure to let my surgeon know this PCPs staff is no exception. Not sure why his office is referring patients here, as they seem uninterested in accepting his pre-​op referrals (for an easy, quick 300 bucks, no less). Unprofessional is the best word to describe them.

Dr. Brett is going Concierge in 2015. He has been my primary care physician for several years and I like him, but I have had to find a new PCP. Can no longer afford Dr. Brett.
A «Concierge» medical practice is one that charges you somewhere around $ 2000 annual fee just for the privilege of seeing that doctor. That $ 2000 is NOT covered in any way by insurance, it’s just a cash-​out annual fee you pay to the doctor just so he will continue to see you. It’s obviously for the wealthy who can afford to pay their doctor $ 2000 every year for doing absolutely nothing. But doctors want to make more money, sadly in the case of Concierge medicine by gouging their patients. You can find out more about Concierge medicine on

This probably explains why some comments here recently said they called Dr. Brett’s office but they weren’t taking new patients. Until they complete the conversion to Concierge, they’re most likely in a holding pattern. They’ll want your $ 2000 up front.

Receptionist was not helpful over the phone. Didn’t want to make an appointment with me instead wanted me to call my insurance to see if Dr was accepted. Even after telling her I would be happy to self pay, she basically doesn’t want any new clients. Not sure how the doctor is bc I had to go to a Walk in clinic instead today.

I just switched doctors and immediately had an issue with an infection. I am so grateful for the time and energy he and his staff spent with me on this issue. Not only the actual medical issue but the professional courtesy I received each time I called.

So glad I found Dr. Brett. After the Affordable Care Act passed I needed to see a primary doctor immediately! It had been so many years since I had a physical/​checkup, that I came to him with bucklet-​load of questions and concerns. Dr. Brett’s taken the time to listen and give some awesome referrals to specialists. I now feel comfortable knowing that If I ever feel sick I have a great doctor to see & take care of me.

Dr. Brett is definitely my favorite doctor I have ever been to. I’ve been to so many doctors that listen to you for a minute then throw a script at you and move on. He’s the exact opposite. He always make you feel very important and give you his full attention during your appointment. He also make you feel very comfortable, even with more embarrassing issues. I feel so fortunate to have such an amazing doctor just blocks from my place. I’ve seen a few complaints about his staff on here, but I’ve never run in to any issues myself. They’ve always been very friendly during all 5 or 6 visits. I highly recommend Dr. Brett and his staff!

I love Dr Brett! He really is such an amazing doctor. Every doctor I have ever had before him made me feel like I had 10 seconds to talk before they wrote a script and sent me on my way. Dr Brett actually SITS down in the room with you and asks what’s going on. He’s the first dr I’ve ever had that I actually thought went into medicine to help people! I was recommended to him by a friend, and could not be more grateful. My husband is now also a patient.
So why not 5 stars? It’s the same reason as everyone else… the front office staff. I don’t think Dr Brett knows how awful they are. I heard him tell Irma (I think that’s her name) to check my insurance for physical therapy referral. As soon as he walked away she rudely shoved a pamphlet in my face and told me to call them. Well, big surprise… they weren’t covered. The worst part though, is their attitude. They almost make me want to find another doctor when I have to deal with them on the phone, they are so rude! So why don’t I? Every time I actually see Dr Brett I forget about his staff!

I can not express how grateful I am for finding Dr Brett. It seriously is so hard coming from a small town into a big city. You can throw a rock and hit a dental/​medical office. So how do I choose the right one? Yes the reviews are right about the front desk, they are just not warm and fuzzy, but Dr Brett makes up for it ten fold. He really is the best Dr in all of LA. I just handed his information to a patient at my office because she was also in the same boat as I, just moved here and didn’t know where to go. Thank you Dr Brett you really are the best. :)

Even though I moved 30 miles away, I refused to change my insurance group because I wanted to keep Dr. Brett as my primary doctor.
Dr. Brett takes his time with each patient making sure they understand what’s going on and making sure all our questions are answered. You can definitely tell he cares about our well being. I have never had any problems with the wait or with his staff.
I’ve been to many different doctors in my life and none of them were more caring, patient, professional or knowledgable than Dr. Brett.

I have been a patient of Dr. Brett since July of 1996. I had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in May of the previous year. I am one who is very apprehensive when it comes to doctors. I had been having symptoms of MS for nearly five years before my diagnosis and being ignored by my previous physicians until I collapsed on May 11, 1995. My first meeting with Dr. Brett went very well. He explained that he had other MS patients he was seeing and understood the complexities of my disease. I was also impressed with the fact that we are so close in age.
One thing will stay with me for the rest of my life and is the reason that I have stayed a patient of Dr. Brett all these years. I asked him why he went into the practice of medicine, He said, «I am not in it for money I am in it to help people.» I have watched Dr. Brett go from working for another doctor in 1996 to having his own, well run practice today. Dr. Brett is very true to his word. He is straight forward and honest. He is also the most thorough Dr. I have ever seen. Every year like clockwork I receive a complete physical as well as complete chem. Panel (blood work.) I see him throughout the year as necessary for my MS.
Dr. Brett has a strong support staff; they do their jobs and do them well; they follow his philosophy of caring for patients. Dr. Brett was also my physician for the eight years when I was doing human subjects research at a well-​respected hospital in the area. When one of the experimental drugs went wrong and gave me thyroid cancer in January of 2001, Dr. Brett assisted in finding a wonderful surgeon and was my attending while I was in the hospital. He is one of the most compassionate physicians I have ever known. He always errs on the side of caution and on several occasions his caution saved my life.
When I remarried in 2005, I insisted that my wife become one of his patients. She was leery about the two of us having the same physician, but that soon passed and she has been a patient ever since. My MS recently became progressive and Dr. Brett sat with my wife and I as we cried knowing there were no treatment options left for me and I could no longer work. Dr. Brett stood by me and my wife through the process and offered the best comfort that he could to my terminal situation. He is a wealth of knowledge not only of medicine but of humanity. If you are looking for a doctor who cares about you not just as a patient, but as a human being, Dr. Joey Brett, MD should be your doctor.

Nice guy, friendly. Only problem was the fact that he billed my insurance bogus tests. The guy tried to pull a fast one on my insurance co. Joey, if you’re going to bill bogus claims, make sure the tests are consistent with the appropriate gender and age. Like I said, he’s a nice guy, has an online presence which makes him viable to the youth community, but be aware of the underbelly of the superficiality of this Sherman Oaks office.
