Sage and Stone

The reply was that they don’t know their potential customers or how to contact them. Perhaps they should start with checking their email on a regular basis AND reply to the quotes and inquiries.

We hired Sage and Stone several years ago to do all of the landscaping for our yard after a major remodel. First impressions were good but everything quickly fell off after that. First, they said they would start on a certain day and then delayed several weeks which was frustrating with the summer months approaching. Second, we’re now having to redo the entire backyard because they didn’t install the right drainage systems. Seems like a no brainer considering the flow of water we are now seeing into the yard. Third, communication with them since the landscaping project has been very challenging. Weeks go by without a response. Honestly, for the amount we paid (a lot!), I would have expected more from them on our project. Can’t give them a thumbs up based on our experience. Look elsewhere.

My best friend had Gabe create an amazing luxe backyard for her and highly recommended him. She literally said «I 100% recommend him. Sweetest guy and so easy to work with.» So this is actually two reviews in one.
Gabe has been very prompt in returning my calls in the few times he didn’t answer the phone in the first place. He met me at my house to do an initial consultation and had some great recommendations for my project.
He has been too busy to do any design work the last few weeks but we are starting a construction project and needed some help with moving plants. Gabe quickly responded to my last minute pleas for help and sent Jimmy to move my plants.
Jimmy was awesome. He gave me a ton of information about my plants, how to care for them and what to expect after transplant.
I fully plan to use Gabe for design/​implementation once the construction is complete. I am completely happy with Sage and Stone and would recommend them to anyone.

Reached out — twice — to Sage and Stone regarding a trio of projects: retaining wall, fencing, and a deck. No response at all. Either the contact information they list on their website is entirely wrong, or they’re simply not responsive. Either way, useless.

Awful.
We got as far as finalizing the outline for a patio in paint in our yard. Travis telling us that what we had would work within the price quoted.
I ask for a drawing of the plan to be attached to the contract so we have peace of mind. He says no problem I’ll have it in a few days. 5 days later he actually plans to come out and look at it again. Doesn’t show. A week later he finally does, then tells us that he never even verified that the measurements of the outline he drew and said would work in the price he quoted. Measures and tells us it will be an additional $ 900 to get what we were planning on the whole time. A few days before we’re supposed to start.
Bad /​dishonest communication. We’ll be using someone else.

Travis and his crew built a small retaining wall along the side of my house and installed bamboo. He and his crew were professional, efficient, and did great work. I love that the retaining wall doubled the size of my yard. I would definitely recommend them.

Sage and Stone just completed a large flagstone patio in our backyard. They were prompt, courteous and professional from beginning to start. Travis provided us with an estimate and was able to squeeze our project in — the whole process took less than a month! Travis was very helpful with design suggestions. There were also small details that had occurred to me like drainage, how to incorporate into existing yard, etc. but they were thoughtful about addressing all these things and everything turned out perfect. There were a couple follow up things that need to be finished up and rather than something like that dragging on for weeks, they came out in the next couple days and insisted that final payment not be made until we were 100% happy and the project was completed to our satisfaction. During the whole process, with hauling grass out and dragging in dirt, rock and patio in, it amazingly looked like they had never been there. They are very professional and I would highly recommend them. They will be doing more work for us!

Sage and Stone just finished making a gravel and flagstone pathway for me in the front and side yard to the back patio. I could not be more pleased with the design and quality installation. Jimmy was excellent to work with, very responsive to any concerns I had and helped me make the right decisions as to a top coating of river rock over the crushed gravel to give it a more finished look and curb appeal. The flagstone he recommended is beautiful and blends in perfectly with my brick sidewalk and courtyard. The end result beats my expectations in aesthetic look, quality durable installation and cost. I highly recommend them.

I hired Sage and Stone to do some landscape work (planting/​replanting) and continuing maintenance.
Jimmy, the manager of maintenance/​landscaping, is great to work with. He’s very knowledgeable about plants (to a degree that is beyond simple yard maintenance), and he’s very prompt at returning emails. I’m not always sure the specifics of what I want – sometimes I just have general feeling or vision in mind. Jimmy is great at listening and offering suggestions and ideas.

Really a 4 ½ but, you know, Unilocal…
We had an old rotting deck that we needed torn down and wanted a new flag stone patio put in it’s place. We received multiple quotes, and while not the cheapest, Sage & Stone hit the sweet spot of having a good vision, good customer service, and an affordable price!
All the work, as far as timing goes, went as expected. The workers were friendly and the project manager was always willing to listen to any concerns or revisions my wife or I came up. Additionally, a few minor changes were made mid-​process with no hassle. It can be difficult to envision how something will look until the tare down has happened — everyone involved was understanding of this and ensured that the finished product was something we’d be happy with.

The Sage and Stone crew just finished a complete overhaul of our back yard, turning it from a paved basketball court into a beautifully landscaped oasis. We initially contacted Sage and Stone via their web site and got a quick reply from Gabe, who was our main point of contact from beginning to end.
We got 3 – 4 bids but I knew immediately we would chose this company unless the bid was just outrageous (it wasn’t) because we really liked Gabe’s manner and immediately trusted him. Finalizing the design took a few iterations, but once we settled on what we wanted and could afford, the work was very efficient. I like that they work on one project at a time to minimize the amount of time your yard will be a mess. Gabe allows the customer to be as involved in the process as you wish to be. I preferred to send him photo galleries of plants and stones and decks that I liked, so he could get a sense of our style, then he took it from there. I didn’t want to run all over town choosing stones and landscape lights, so I didn’t have to, and I’m very pleased with the end result!
The company is very transparent about costs and we had several budget check-​ins along the way to ensure there were no surprises.
I highly recommend Sage and Stone and would love to have them back to work on our front yard in the future!

I contacted Sage and Stone on July 5, 2013 and left a voice mail message about getting a quote for a landscape project at my house in West Seattle. I left extensive information about the nature of the project and my contact infomation.
It’s now July 28 and I yet to receive a return phone call. I understand this is a busy time for landscapers but that doesn’t excuse this behavior. They won’t be getting my business.

My wife and I had a small (~1000+ sq ft) front yard that needed a major overhaul.
We had a pretty clear idea of what we wanted– a paver patio and walkway with specific dimensions and layout pattern, a retaining wall, a cedar fence, new grass, etc.
So, last September I called 3 companies (including Sage and Stone) to get bids.
I contacted S&S via email and got a prompt reply with specific dates of when someone could come out and give me a bid. I ended up meeting with Travis (one of the co-​owners I believe). He walked around the yard with me as I explained what I was looking for, taking notes and asking great questions.
Their quote was comparable to the other companies that came out but all of the great reviews on Unilocal sealed the deal.
We set a start date of about 1 month down the road, made an up-​front deposit and that was that. The project took about 2 ½ weeks from start to finish.
While we’re very pleased with the end result, it would be dishonest to say there weren’t any hiccups along the way. I believe most of these were due to miscommunication about things I had expressed to Travis early on in the scoping phase that, either, never got transmitted to the Gabe (who ended up overseeing the work) or were accidentally overlooked.
If you’ve ever been involved in any type of major renovation, this sort of thing is pretty common.
Fortunately, Gabe and I were able to work through most of the issues in a professional and fairly fluid manner.
Would I recommend S&S? Absolutely. 100%. They do great work and are easy to work with.
My advice to you is the same I’d give when working with any contractor: make sure you and your contractor have reviewed all of the major AND minor points about the project– in person and on paper– before anything begins.
It will ensure all parties are on the same page and will minimize the inevitable stress load that comes when doling out large sums of money.

(I humbly apologize to Travis and Sage and Stone Landscape; I meant to write this review a long, long time ago for their fantastic work at my townhouse.)
I purchased my house in 2006 and always told my visitors and friends that I was going put in a patio in my little front yard as one of my first projects. Lo and behold after 6 years I still didn’t put one in and finally swallowed my pride to hire someone to do it for me. I scoured the Craig’s List for a cheap alternative but with the glut of listings I couldn’t choose — I wanted someone who was good, reasonably affordable, insured, etc. Unilocal proved to be the answer: I found Sage and Stone after reading the raving reviews.
I contacted Travis and he came to my house to survey and estimate the work. (He’s a stand-​up guy and nice to deal with.) I pulled the trigger as soon as I got the estimate and we scheduled to meet at stone yard to pick out pavers. The work was completed in 2 days. Literally, it was that easy! And the cost was very reasonable!

Since we recently had the bad luck of having some wasted teenagers crash their car into my backyard and flee the scene on foot, we were obviously in need of some TLC to nurse it back to health. Half of the wooden fence was knocked down, rockery damaged, plants killed, glass and debris everywhere… you get the picture. I did several searches on Unilocal for some guidance on who to hire, and these guys came up again and again, so we gave them a call. We called one day, Gabe came out the next, and by the same evening he had already sent us a quote, so they were hired!
A couple of days later the crew showed up and started doing their thing. I’ve never seen guys work so fast and take so much pride in the work they do. With these guys you’re not just hiring some contractors… you’re hiring professionals who do craftsman work. They completed the job in a little less than 3 days, and I couldn’t be happier! It is more beautiful than it ever was before, and I’ve never been so proud to show off my back yard. They went above and beyond what we had expected of them, and all the neighbors are buzzing about wanting to hire Sage and Stone, too!
This is not the last we’ll be seeing of this company. I’m excited to see the progress and results of some other projects we will be hiring them to complete in the next few months. Thanks a lot, Sage and Stone… you guys are the real deal, and I’m so glad we hired you!

I was really impressed when Travis came out to look at the property and assess what I wanted done. I wanted to make my yard more kid friendly, but with an artistic touch. I spent probably 30 minutes going over with Travis what I was looking for.
All that went good and I left feeling like they were going to be the company to nail what I needed. Things went downhill from there. It took a while to get the sketches, but Travis apologized for that as I believe he had been out of town. The initial sketch was very off from what I had discussed I wanted in that particular area. It took about a week for a reply, in which he explained he had taken away something different from our conversation (which is fine, although I felt I was extremely specific). I figured I would continue on, so I found the paver’s I wanted for my driveway and asked for a quote. The quote was about $ 2,000 higher than a competitors, but when I asked if he could match it, he did.
Here is the part that made me decide not to go with them.
1. He asked me to go measure the driveway for the bid. It’s a $ 10,000 + driveway job and I have never had a contractor ask me to go do the measurements for their bid. If it was a flower bed or something, I could maybe see that, but this is an 850 sq/​ft driveway. My takeaway from that was that either Travis was too busy or not interested in the project enough to take 20 minutes to come and measure the driveway and give a little bit of customer service. Very unprofessional. Who knows if the other guy got it wrong?
2. He asked for the other landscapers bid, which was obviously fine, so he knew I wasn’t making up I got a better price. He used the other contractors measurements of the driveway to make his bid. Again, take the time and come measure it yourself, with the face to face time you have with the client you might just land the job.
3. Travis is not very fast or responsive on getting back to me. My assumption is that it being the summer they are busy. Which is fine. Just say I’m too busy and don’t waste my time taking forever.
The work they do might be good, I don’t know. But the service up front was not very reassuring with the three points I outlined above. And I see I am the only one not mentioning this problem. I suggest they work on being more prompt with potential customers, and take the time to come out for a new bid. Furthermore, I planned on spending a good amount of money on making the whole yard quite unique. If I was in their shoes I’d reassess how much work they can take on, and not take on more than they can handle. I’d also ask how much a client’s budget is, to assess if its something they want to go after hard. Otherwise they will keep getting reviews like this. I was hoping they would be responsive and aggressive about the job, guess they must be making a lot of money elsewhere.

We hired Sage and Stone and worked with Travis to re-​do our back yard. We had an ugly little townhouse yard on a slight slope where the builders threw in some random bushes, a tree, bark and a tiny little wood deck. We wanted something where we could put out a full patio set, a grill, grass for the dog and a small potting shed — a lot for a small space. We also needed a French drain for water log issues at the fence line.
After getting a design drawn up we took about a year to save money and ended up going with something simpler than our original design (which included an arbor that we decided not to do). Travis came out several times to discuss our ideas and map out a new, scaled back plan. We decided to split the yard into two sections with a stone retaining wall in the middle, a raised section with sod (keeping our existing tree) and a flag stone patio on the lower half. The potting shed would be on one side of the yard and the grill on the opposite side. They estimated the job would take about 1 week.
Well, after one week we have a new back yard. We keep looking at it and can’t believe it’s ours. Travis and his crew gave us exactly what we wanted. The stone wall and flagstone patio are beautiful and we have stepping stones leading up to the spot where we’re going to have a custom potting shed built. The patio set gets delivered tomorrow and we’re shopping the 4^th of July sales for a grill!
Not only are we pleased with the result, but the yard was finished on time and on budget, they cleaned up afterwards so it looks really clean, and they gave my neighbor a Lowe’s gift card to replace any plants that may have been damaged on the path they had to use to gain access to the yard (which was really nice considering there wasn’t really any damage). Travis also told me that I can call them if any of the patio stones become loose or the sod doesn’t root properly and they’ll fix it right away.
If we do any future work on the yard (may add some privacy features at some point) I would call Sage and Stone without hesitation. I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a landscaper. We couldn’t be happier.

My partner and I found Gabe & Travis’ company, Sage & Stone, on Unilocal.We scheduled a first meeting with Gabe to walk through our yard and to share our thoughts with him. One of the more impressive qualities he demonstrated is that he listens, he hears what you say. The end result in our new backyard truly picked up of the various threads of what we discussed and somehow brought these into his final design. Having a clear idea as a couple also helped, plus having lots of different pictures made our first conversation easier. Later one, Gabe also supplied lots of pictures for us to comment on, which we did, liberally.
We had interviewed several landscapers, and we decided to go with Gabe simply because we liked hislaid backattitude, as well as his passion about the designs we were hoping for. Hiring him to come up with 3 designs also helped solidify want we wanted from our small backyard. Somehow seeing the various possibilities helped us throw out competing ideas and settle on the vision that excited us the most.
Gabe is very knowledgeable about stone and plants, especially those from Pacific Northwest. Not only did he choose edible options for our yard, but also helped to ensure we had some color year round. He also recommended better plant choices for the side of our house which gets no direct light. The builder of the house put plants that withered there. Now, the new plants have already transformed that side of the house, and once they fill in some, they will add to the overall aesthetics.
We found the process incredibly interesting with lots to think about. And going out to visit the stone yard to get a sense of the stone choices was an excellent field trip. Such a project definitely required lots of communication, between us as a couple, and as a couple with Gabe, discussing different options, sharing concerns, asking questions.
It was though for us at first, because one of us was not physically in Seattle at that time. However, smartphones and 3 way conference calls helped to overcome the distance, and after a few emails and phone calls, it really became a fun project. And the guys who made up his work team were cool to talk to, as well as conscientious of our neighbors and professional. The physical work took them around 3 weeks, which flew by.
We are extremely happy with the results, which are unique to us and our home. We were worried that our yard might look like a poor imitation of what we saw in landscaping pictures, which is probably what would have happened if we attempted the redesign ourselves.
Instead, we have a personalized treasure, built from Sage and Stone’s interpretation of our words and vision.
Gabe also provides good customer’s service. During the project, we pointed out to Gabe things we did not like (The stone bridge did not blend well in the yard, one patio stone wasn’t intalled nicely). Gabe and his crew took care of the problems quickly with no extra charge. Addiotionally, one of our black bamboo looks dying and Gabe offered to replace it if the plant does not survive over the winter.
Highly recommended.
It was not a cheap project, but we felt every penny we spent was worth it.

Contacted Sage and Stone on their website hoping to get a response for a substantial project for our backyard. Waited a couple weeks… No Reply.
I followed up with a phone call to Gabe and left a message. Considering it was spring and the high season for the landscaping business, I briefly outlined our project and emphasized we were not in a rush… just wanted to have a consultation… No Reply.
For a company that advertises on Unilocal and has people stumbling over themselves with positive reviews, I am speechless.

We had a terrific experience working with these guys and we definitely recommend them. We worked primarily with Gabe who led us through the design process of our new backyard patio and front steps replacement projects.
The design process was easy and fun. We worked closely with Gabe on some design concepts and he was more than willing to let us call the shots and suggest ideas at will. Some worked and some didn’t but what mattered is that we felt part of the process. And what we ended up with was exactly what we wanted in the time that they said they would get the work done within the cost estimate we were given.
The bottom line is that we are thrilled with how everything turned out. But beyond just great work we found that Gabe was on top of this project from the very first phone call. And as it turned out this is really what set Sage and Stone apart from other firms that we spoke to. We never had to wonder if we were going to get a phone call back or a reply to our email because we always did without fail. This was a big deal for us since we had had the opposite experience prior to finding S&S.
