My experience at this salon was just DREADFUL. I called to make an appointment and was able to get in right away which was really the only «good» thing about my experience. The girl who cut my hair (on a Tuesday morning) was the only person in the entire salon. She sat me down and asked me what I wanted to do with my haircut. I had hair halfway down my back and explained to her that I wanted to take 2 inches off just to cut the split/​dry ends and even showed her a picture on my phone of how long I wanted to keep my hair. She said she understood and then began to squirt down my hair with a water bottle — she didn’t even shampoo my hair!!! I’ve been a hairstylist myself and know that if your hair is unevenly wet/​dry you are going to get an UNEVEN haircut and sure enough that is what I got — one side is longer and there are long stragglers everywhere. She didn’t even know how to «check» the haircut to make sure it was even.
What’s even worse is that she took off a total of 4 inches, NOT the 2 that I asked for! HOW FRUSTRATING. I should’ve known that something was wrong when she was squirting my hair with a water bottle and then didn’t even try to section out my hair to cut it! Not once did she section/​part my hair with clips like a professional but instead started cutting my long hair in the front, not at the nape of the head like any professional would. After she gave me what was essentially a «straight» cut all the way around my head (no layering, no shaping) she tries to add «texture to my hair» by using thinning shears on the ends like that was supposed to do something?!? The blowdry/​styling part at the end was also PATHETIC — she lobbed on tons of hair oil and tried to round brush my hair and I could tell she didn’t know what she was doing bc she couldn’t control my hair as she was blowdrying it — another mark of an amateur.
What was also very annoying and very unprofessional about this place is, she kept running off during the consultation & haircut to answer the PHONE! How rude, inconsiderate and downright annoying.
This place is run by nothing but AMATEURS who don’t know how to give a professional haircut — go ask your mom to cut your hair, she’ll probably do better. I will NEVER return to this salon even if its conveniently located down the street from me.

They must have undergone an owner change because the last time I went in there were two stylists that I had never seen before there and when I mentioned that I wanted a «premium cut» that they advertise on their website, they had no idea what I was talking about. The previous stylists always knew what I meant when I asked for a men’s premium cut. The initial confusion was frustrating. That said though, I still got a very good haircut that I was satisfied with. The shampoo and scalp massage, though, were not as well done, so taking a star down for that too. Prices also seem to have gone up just a little bit. I heard them charge the guy before me $ 20 for a standard haircut, when it used to be $ 18. My premium cut was $ 25 instead of the usual $ 24, but a dollar or two isn’t that big of a deal for me.

Good haircut for $ 20, and it only took 15 minutes. I’ll be back.

This place is a disaster! There is no mistaking why it is primarily empty! I went for a cut and color and my hairstylist bleached my hair yellow and red! It took 2 more times of coloring my hair for me to stop crying inside when I looked in the mirror. Now I am left with barely tolerable color and was still charged full price for the experience… In addition I overheard the girl next to me having a similar experience… DO NOT GET YOUR HAIR COLORED AT THIS SALON!

J’s is a hidden gem for men’s haircuts. They are very flexible to get you in, I’ve never had to wait more than 10 minutes even if I show up without an appointment.
My girlfriend is so grateful that I found J’s. No more hatchet jobs from those bargain, fresh out of beauty school, wanna be salons!

First off, I want to clear a possible misconception. Kieu DOES still work at J’s Salon. I’m not sure where one of the reviewers got his information from, but he is wrong. Kieu just cut my hair a couple weeks ago.
Anyways, I love this place and I’ve been a regular here for the past couple years. Kieu is very friendly and good at what she does. She listens to what you want from your haircut and does an excellent job of achieving that.
Also, my two cents: when you are finding a new salon, you should give the person that cuts your hair a few tries. Give them some time get to know what you like and what you want.

Keiu’s no longer cutting hair (so I’m told).
Went twice: once by one of the other stylists; 2^nd time by Kieu.
While Kieu did a great job, she’s no longer there. Got a mediocre haircut by the other stylist — nothing to write home about; reasonable for the price.
If J’s salon was ever «THE place» for men’s haircuts… it isn’t now.

All I can say is Kieu is an amazing person and fantastic hair stylist. Her work is so outstanding that I’m convinced to take the time to write her a second review. June 29 of 2014 was my Wedding Day and my wedding wouldn’t have been perfect if Kieu wasn’t there. Having 6 bridesmaids is not easy and as you know we women are difficult, especially when it comes to looking good! Lol… Of course, I thought oh boy this is going to be fun and stressful at the same time but Kieu had it all under control. She designed an amazing updo for each girl and made them all look phenomenal. Best of all they were all happy with the results, impressed by her talent and how quickly she worked. If you are looking for haircut, style or updo for any occasion, I highly recommend Kieu at J’s salon.

I was pleased with the cheap haircut that I had at the time.
My hair was too long, it needed to be shorter, it needed to happen immediately, and they helped me out.
I didn’t much care for the skin infection they gave me when they buzzcut into the flesh of my neck with their trimmer, however. I didn’t realize that I had a subcutaneous thing happening for months as it was on the back of my head.
I believe that I have a nice scar there now, but for months people were telling me that I might want to go to the doctor when proper people were trimming my neck. I ignored them and eventually over the better course of a year, it went away.
So yeah. I pay more for haircuts now. I go to a proper barber or to the hair people that I must schedule a week in advance. No more cheap infection haircuts for me.

An update to my former review which was from May 2012. This is still my go-​to place for men’s hair cuts. Friendly service and an excellent cut.
The landlord turned the lot into pay parking so arrive a little early to snag some free street parking.
The prices went up a little, but for what you get, it is still reasonable and a good value.
Men’s cuts range from $ 15 for a buzz to $ 35 for the Signature, which includes relaxing shampoo, scalp & neck massage, face & neck hot towels wrap, and style. Try it once an you will be hard-​pressed to not get one every time!

One word: mullet. I’m torn between one and two stars, as the color was awesome but my hair… I asked for an inch and some how, I am mising about 4 inches… plus, I have a mullet, ala my 7^th grade hair. It’s not exactly sophisticated, more like bad bob.
Stay away from here if you have fine hair. She did offer to give me a free haircut next time, but I just can’t risk it.
Off to get it fixed, as I have no choice, since the layers, are well, layered into a mullet.
P. S. I really, and mean really, have no hair left. He layered my fine hair into nothin’.
P.S 2. This is really and truly the ugliest haircut I have ever had. Even after getting it «fixed». The stylist who did it ask me which beauty school I had gone to… I really shouldn’t have had to pay for this one at all.

First off, I’m from a Southern Californian suburb. so I am NOT used to paying $ 20+ for a simple haircut. It took quite some time to find a decent place that was anywhere near $ 20, so let me just start out by saying how glad I am to have found THIS place. which is just under $ 20 (pre-​tip, of course).
Inside the shop, it does not have a big city vibe at all. Waiting area is a little small (can’t imagine fitting more than 2 – 3 people, thankfully haven’t had to experience that) but it’s comfortable and the reading selection is nice. The actual, er, cutting area is pretty spacious.
Kieu is marvelous, however. She’s cut my hair no more than 4 – 5 times, yet she still remembers who I am. Even when I call. She also remembers the styling I want, what school I go to, who my roommate is, etc. It’s extremely refreshing to get your hair cut in a big city and feel like a valued customer.
The haircut leaves a little to be desired. My hair looks good for a week, maybe two at best, but gets pretty choppy quickly. I’d say the culprit of this is the fact that I *ask* for a scissor-​only cut, but usually get a scissor-​here-​and-​there-​cut.
Make no mistake, out of all the places (and friends) I’ve had cut my hair, this salon is the best. However, compared to the cheaper places back home. not so much. But hey, that’s the cost of living in a big city.
Would I recommend this place? Yes. In fact, I already have.
As an FYI, parking is usually a little iffy.

Best haircut I’ve received in recent memory and I’ll tell you why.
1. Kieu is very active in working with you to get the hair cut and style you want. She also adds her own input and is very knowledgeable about what and where needs to be cut. I’ll add that the style I like is a bit uncommon for Asians (think Mad Men-​ish but less slicked) so I was delightfully surprised at how well Kieu handled my often hard to cut hair.
2. Very nice and inviting interior. Outside can be quite unassuming but don’t let it fool you. The place is very nice, with high ceilings, modern furniture and décor. This is a place I dig.
3. Incredibly affordable. August 2013 — I paid only $ 18 for a men’s haircut + style. This is almost half of what I paid elsewhere. I almost felt guilty paying so little and only tipping $ 5. The great benefit of this price is that it really allows for more frequent visits so you can consistently keep that hairstyle, shape and length you want.
I will come back FOR SURE and hope they stay around for a long time.

I made an appointment on a weekday morning to get my hairs cut at J’s. I mainly chose this place because it’s really close to my house; it’s in that same little complex that has a dry cleaner, Eastlake Yoga, and that overpriced sushi restaurant where I will never eat again.
So, as I gathered from other Unilocalers, the owner Kieu (pronounced «Q’) was super nice. She gave me a great haircut. It’s a little shorter than we talked about, I think, but it looks good and I’m totally happy with it.
While I was there, Kieu and I were the only people in the salon, so she had to step away a few times to answer the phone, but I didn’t mind. The appointment took about an hour and the cost was $ 30. Great experience, great value.

Had my first haircut at J’s Salon and looking forward to many more.

I’ve been going here ever since I moved to Eastlake. Kieu is a great stylist and runs a great shop. Very clean, friendly and inviting, not to mention she leads a great conversation. Her signature cut service is top notch, very relaxing and she’s very detail oriented. The head and neck massage are worth the money alone… and you get a haircut!
They do a great job accommodating both walk-​ins as well as appointments.
I would highly recommend.

I started going here a few months ago after purchasing a deal on AmazonLocal. They charge:
$ 15 — standard haircut
$ 20 — haircut with shampoo and short scalp massage
$ 30 — Signature haircut (includes extra long scalp and next massage)
The two ladies who run the place are very friendly and do a great job. The haircuts are as good or better than the downtown ‘gentlemen’s salons’ (you know, the ones with big screen tvs and black leather sofa’s) and then they add a scalp and neck massage… all for 25% to 50% less.
Highly recommended!

Probably the friendliest service I’ve encountered in a Salon. Never been here before, but I was immediately won over by the kindness that one of the hairdressers had for an older gent. He had trouble getting up and moving from the couch so she helped him up and walked him carefully to her station. Awesome!
As for me, Kieun (hope I got it right) was absolutely delightful. She asked how I liked my hair cut and if there was any style I preferred. I’m pretty simple so I just let her take over. She knew what she was doing and I left a happy customer with a nice clean cut. The price was just right too. $ 15 in this city? Forget the place I was dishing out $ 35 every three weeks. Score. I’ll be coming back here again.
If you want to avoid the snobby higher end salons and access to free parking (front and behind the building) I highly suggest this place.
