Scotts Valley Cyclesport

I live in Washington State and when in Santa Cruz, I rent a road bike from Scotts Valley Cyclesport. They have excellent bikes (Specialized Tarmacs in great shape) and their service is better than any other shop I have seen. The mechanics make sure that the bike fits perfectly and they will suggest rides as well. They happily put my Speedplay pedals on the bike. I asked Brittany for some suggestions and she not only mapped out exactly the type of rides I wanted, she put two rides on post-​its that I could tape to the bike for directions. In addition she gave me excellent advice regarding what to expect on the rides. Like the rest of the shop employees, she took the time to make sure all my questions were asked and that I took to the road in good shape. I would go out of my way to do business with this shop.

Disappointed. Somehow it took 2 days for them to change a tire and not even switch out the front with the back — like they said they would. I don’t even care that its not even the same tire/​brand. $ 70 later I wish I just did it myself. They were upselling all these other things like I had never adjusted my own brakes in the last 15 years of riding. I went with anyway because they’re a local company and I grew up in the SC mountains. Now I have a bad taste in my mouth.

This shop is the best in the Santa Cruz area, hand down. Not only is their sales staff helpful and knowledgeable, but the owner actually works in the store and will probably be the one to help you. Their mechanics are very very good at what they do. They can fix anything on any type of bike, given enough time and the right parts. When I have a mechanical problem, Benny or JP will talk me through where I went wrong, fix the problem quickly and for a reasonable price, and treat me with respect rather than impatience. Having Brittany there now too is awesome since women like to talk to other women about apparel and she also coaches a high school cycling team which is super rad. I really dig where this shop is going from a business stand point and as a customer. Take your business here for sure! It’ll be well worth it.

Great experience, got a lot of good advice on bike setup and nutrition. All of the staff took the time to answer any and every question – cool guys who know a ton about cycling.

I reached out to these guys for a new custom build and the owner called me to discuss specifics the same day. Within hours, he e-​mailed me a competitive quote, with full details of what was included. While I did not end up buying from them, I would have no reservations doing so.

I’ve done business with a lot of bike shops over the last 30 years in many places around the US. SVCS is by far my favorite. Great staff, awesome owner! These guys always go «above and beyond».

Wanted to give a huge shout out to the guys that works here. I came in late on a Thursday evening to check out mountain bikes and was promptly greeted by Brent. He took the time to show me quite a few different options that were in stock and helped me find a bike that was the right fit and price point.
I came back the next day and asked even more questions since this was a big investment and wanted to make sure I was making the right choice. Again, Brent answered all of my questions and assured me that there was no rush and I should be confident. Well after much research and thought, I decided to go with his recommendation and buy the 2015 Specialized Stumpjumper. Not only was it a great bike but an even better deal price wise!
The guys went above and beyond in my opinion and when I went to pickup up the bike Friday, I was so pleased by the entire situation that I ended up buying my wife a new mountain bike as well. Thanks to everyone there for all your help! I will definitely be recommending and coming back to this place for any future needs!!!

I arrived 5 minutes before closing. They were still willing to see us to help check a flat tire, fill the tire and check the bike. They even let me try out a brand new bike. Brent and the service guys were friendly and helpful. I will come back again!

Brought in a trick style bike — brand new with a weird issue — the chain kept choking up and falling off — well — it was not to tight or to loose and it was not the wrong size etc. everything was a trip — they took it on and said «Dont worry — we will figure it out»
they called me and let me know it was ready — i was not able to come for another week — I was out of town — so when I did come in the bike guy (mature man with ponytail — super cool and friendly) takes it out to ride — he shows me its working perfect and then explained to me the gears on the rear were in the wrong order or something. he had to take it apart piece by piece and rebuild it. i was like WOW this is going to be hours of labor — i bet itll be like 300 dollars minimum. i cringed and felt sorta sick. he showed me that he replaced all the pieces (they were a different color and though bike had never been ridden it also had newer new parts) –He had to change out the brake line cause of something and he cleaned the bike up from the dust of sitting for a year —
so I head in and remember I bought a coupon book from my kids fundraiser — there was a 10 dollar off coupon in it! Oh my I was in luck! HAHA Well, he pulls the tag off and hands it to me. I was sorta freaking out still but a slight bit relieved about the coupon. I flip it over and says 10 bucks! I was like NO WAY !! I cant pay that! He was like HUH? I was trying to tell him. you gotta charge me more than that. he explained to me how he knew the bike was brand new and that he would honor its warranty even though I didnt buy it from him. WOW!?! WHAT?!
Incredible service. I referred 3 people to them who followed through with high end mountain bike purchases. Right on — I will keep spreading the word. Good people. Everyone in here was RAD.

We’ve had consistently great experiences with this shop over the years. First it was a mtn bike for my husband, then a bike for myself and our youngest. They even made some modifications to a trailer we purchased at REI for our daughter that uses a wheelchair and can’t pedal but wanted to be along with the family. When we have had issues with service (small ones) they have done a great job fixing things quickly and making it right. Already looking forward to the next bike we buy there, some of the best money spent.

I’ve always avoided this shop because it has the look of a snobbish overpriced shop written all over it. There’s something about tents in front of shops with bikes under them that turn me off. I shrugged off my stupid generalizations one day as I realized I was headed for my favorite UCSC trails and had some seriously thin disk pads. The fellow at the service desk threw my bike on the stand and had all of my disk pads changed in under 10 minutes and it was half the price of shops in San Jose.
Next time I came in to demo a bike I’m thinking about getting and asked them if I could get a half day special because I only had time for one ride. They charged me half price.
Then I needed my fork rebuilt and they did a great job, it was priced as expected and the turnaround was what was promised, I also got a phone call when it was done (this phone call is often overlooked at many shops)

I recently moved to the area and being a competitive endure mountain biker back home, was anxious to learn the surrounding trails. This being the closest shop to me, I figured they were perfect to send me on the right path… our trail for that matter.
I WAS WRONG.
The first time I came in I was entirely ignored. Maybe they were busy? Nope, three employees hanging around the mechanic area… I walked out after several minutes.
Second time I went in it was the same story. However, I decided to go out of my way to talk to an employee… after standing in front of him while he talked to another employee and asking for some beta on local trails he treated me like a complete idiot… for not knowing the trails… WHICH IS WHY I WAS THERE! He rudely pointed to where the maps were and told me to figure it out… seriously?! I just walked out…
I decided to go in one more time, but just to see if they had a Giro bike shoe I was after. They are listed as a Giro dealer but are very much in bed with Specialized… and I stood around, again, waiting to ask if they carry any other brand… which I can only conclude they don’t…as I was ignored… again…
It’s too bad for them as I drive PAST them every time I go to my favorite bike shop in Santa Cruz.
Also too bad because I just spent $ 14k on new bikes at said shop… who isn’t rude, ignorant and especially didn’t have horrible customer service.

Yet another great unicycle wheel build by J.C., this time with a tubeless 29er. It was a quick yet strong build, and I’m excited and confident to use this larger unicycle as my commuter. This is my first tubeless experience, and J.C. was very informative in how tubeless tires are managed. He is on my 3^rd wheel build (a 19″ trials unicycle) right now! Unfortunately I’ll be moving to Oregon for a year, but if I have any other wheels that need building, I’m definitely going to drive down to Scotts Valley to get the job done. :)

I got some lube on my rear brake right before heading out on a ride so when I noticed my brake wasn’t biting I turned toward SVCS, hoping for some help.
The mechanic told me that both the pads and the rotor would need to be replaced, which is a complete lie. Replace the pads, sure, but anyone who tells me that a piece of metal can’t be degreased is obviously trying to rip me off. I may have been dumb enough to lube up my pads but I’m not that dumb.
I’m not giving these sharks any more of my money.

Always difficult for me to rate a Bike Store when I have run two very successful Bike Shops in my younger years. One of which is still going strong and the other closed when the owner retired yet still a world famous shop. I believe I try hard to base every store on its own merits. Location and demographic play into that and my knowledge of the business as well. I do a small amount of internet business, but my local shop is my preferred way to buy.
So today I was in Los Gatos for an appointment and went by a store in Los Gatos looking for an unusual, but still readily available tire size and I had preferred make in mind. The store in Los Gatos didn’t have the size or the make, so I thought if I must take the more readily available size then I would head up to SVCS and give my local shop my business.
SVCS had the same size and make as Los Gatos, and I told the sales assistant that the store in Los Gatos had the better version of the same tire for less money than you are selling the lesser version of the same tire. The assistant seemed annoyed and said well we cannot do it for that price. 1^st off I didn’t ask for that price and 2^nd I didn’t even ask for a discount. I asked for the other things I needed and paid what is now the going (price gouging) rate on cables and housing and left without tires.
So making sure I wasn’t crazy I checked the price of the other tires and sure enough $ 5 less for the better version than SVCS was charging for the lesser version.
Then I went and totaled my expenditures for bike related stuff in 2013 and low and behold $ 3500.00 later and I didn’t even buy a bike in $ 2013. Of that a little over $ 500.00 was spent on odd, obscure Campagnolo parts over the internet, otherwise all was spent in local bike shop/​stores.
So I drove 20mins to a local Bike Shop in Santa Cruz and found the tire size and brand I was looking for and purchased the tires. Sad because I pass by SVCS twice a day most every day and they have lost my business for good. When you can buy everything SVCS sell at most any store in Santa Cruz or San Jose one would think they would try harder to accommodate and at least offer a discount if they cannot price match rather than seem pissed I even said a word. Again I never asked for either, but based on the assistants attitude I felt I had done enough. If it was $ 5 more per tire for the same tire I would have said nothing at all and bought the tires, but it was more for the lesser tire.
Truth is if the brand in question is so much cheaper at a store in Los Gatos that must pay a huge premium to be on the Ave in Los Gatos, maybe SVCS should carry other brands as well. Maybe, will not matter to me anymore.

I frick’n love this place and I travel from Mid Town just to patronize the place! Andrew, Brent, Benny, and even that skinny guy «Heater» are a wealth of knowledge and get the job done. Today went to see «JC» and he help set up my daughter’s mountain bike and he was great with her and the bike; really made it work! Thanks to all the SCCS Team!!!

So I took an old mid 90’s Rockhopper into this joint. The poor Bike was given to me and previously had been neglected and left outside uncovered for a decade. The frame was still in good shape, the Brakes still worked, but the Gears, Tires, Seat and Chain were shot.
I did my due diligence before coming in, reading up on what I should expect. Benny was the man who assessed my bike, he was very friendly, professional, and thorough, he explained everything that would need to be done and gave me a basic cost break down with an estimate. I didn’t even have to ask any questions… he had it all covered.
It took them several days and I got the bike back almost good as new, and the cost was $ 25 less than the estimate, score!

I went to SV Cyclesport on Saturday with my boyfriend to look at mountain bikes and walked out a very happy customer! I had been to about 5 bike shops and everything about SV Cyclesport from the selection to customer service and prices helped us decide this was the place to get my bike. Andrew the owner is awesome and so very helpful! I checked out and rode around 5 – 6 bikes and ended up getting a Santa Cruz Highball. I love everything about my bike and my experience here. I have already told two friends looking at buying bikes about this place. The shop is VERY organized, well stocked and clean. They have everything from kids bikes to mountain bikes of every level to beach cruisers and more. Need a bike or anything bike related come here :)
