We offer building energy audits and resource efficiency testing. We focus on sustainability throughout the building process. History

Established in 2001.

John Rising, the owner of Rising Design & Construction, has a background in Product Design and spent a dozen years in that industry before changing careers to the building contracting industry. We take sustainable construction methods very seriously and are always trying to learn the latest technology and methods to save energy and resources. We attend many classes, trade shows and conferences a year as well as subscribing to many trade journals to keep up with the ever changing nature of green building.

Business Owner

Born and raised in Marin County, John Rising grew up around many building projects often being involved on one level or another. He attended San Francisco State University where he received a BA Degree in Industrial Design. After working for more than 13 years in the product design field, he turned back to construction receiving his California contractor’s license in 2001 and forming Rising Design & Construction. In 2005 he was certified as a Green Building Professional through Sonoma State University and since then has become a HERS rater, a GreenPoint rater, BPI certified and recently his company was certified as a Bay Area Green Business in Sonoma County. Rising Design & Construction is a member of the USGBC, BIG, the BBB, Efficiency First and other trade related organizations. Rising Design & Construction utilizes energy efficient sustainable building methods to do both commercial and residential remodels, additions, retrofits and maintenance.

Just worked with John for the 3rd time. I was getting a lot of sound transmission from upstairs neighbors and he installed a new ceiling for sound proofing. He came through yet again with getting the work done during the allotted time so that downtime for patient treatments in the office was as minimal as possible. I will definitely continue to work with him in the future and recommend him to others.

John, was amazing. I have now worked with him on remodeling 2 clinics. He made excellent green suggestions and helped me find materials that were more affordable versions of expensive things I liked. His estimate was accurate and he completed the job on time. I also appreciate that the estimate and schedule for work and payments was very clear and direct. I’ve worked with contractors in the past where this was not the case. When hiccups happen he is on it. He is very easy going and very pleasant to work with. I have recommended him to everyone I know.

John and his competent crew just completed fixing a moisture problem (80 relative humidity) that plagued my 1940’s Mill Valley home. As others have stated, John was a good communicator, very professional, knowledgeable, reliable and honest. Though my job was small, he understood my concerns and urgency. Most importantly, when a problem arose, after the job was completed, he responded immediately to fix it. He stayed on budget and made sure that I was able to obtain applicable rebates. I would use John again and will recommend him to friends. The humidity is a safe 50%. My lungs and I thank John!

John completed a number of energy efficiency upgrades at our 1908 home which led to a remodel of our upstairs. He was conscious about cost, very helpful in making suggestions on how to remediate issues we discovered along the way, and provided an accurate estimate of «when» things would be done. Great to work with, would definitely work with him again!

John Rising was a pleasure to work with. He took the extra time to always explain the process of work proposed, and work in progress. He is an excellent source for green building technology. We used his services to ready our crawlspace under the house for new a HVAC system. He transformed the space, insulated it and sealed it off to make it a controlled air space that made a perfect setting for the new heating system.
It’s hard work doing that kind of renovation under a house, he never complained or was grumpy to deal with.
He also helped us make our home more air tight, energy efficient and ultimately more comfortable and non-​toxic. We are very big on a non-​toxic home and he had suggestions to help with that.
His strength is green building construction. We look forward to adding a bit of living space to this house later on, I would use John for that job without question.

I had Rising work on several projects. They did a good job of assessing energy efficiency to reduce energy bills, but fell down a bit in execution. Installation did not occur as plan and ended up being much more costly, a less satisfactory option, and did not result in the level of rebates as planned. There was a significant rebate and that process went well.
Also, on the billing there was a communication issue on some of the billing that should have been straightforward but ended up being very difficult to resolve.
The quality and scheduling of the work was all excellent, other than what I mentioned above. Great subcontractors for the most part.
