I’ve been going to Fisherman’s Warehouse for years. Amy and Bennie are my favorite long time employees. They stock the important items for our Bay Area fishing and more importantly the long range fisherman(or woman in my case). Just recently I came in with a hard to find color in a swim bait and Amy found the supplier and had them ordered for me. The circus is fun to visit once and awhile but I have to admit that the only thing I’ve bought at Bass Pro Shops is a hummingbird feeder.

A great alternative to Bass Pro. For example I was recently looking for an inexpensive, fishing rod that could hold up in saltwater use. I couldn’t find anything reasonable in Bass Pro Shops(BPS) for less than $ 80, but picked up something just as good(if not better, for my purposes) at Fisherman’s Warehouse for $ 30. I like to go to BPS, but they tend to be way overpriced on most things, and Fisherman’s Warehouse provides a much more reasonable alternative just a couple of blocks away.

I like to shop at the small locally owned stores to help the small businesses. Yeah, you might pay a little more but I like the convenience of getting what I need without the hassle of the giant warehouse stores. Fishermen’s Warehouse recently moved from its Cupertino location to Branham and Almaden Expressway in San Jose so I thought I’d stop in and take a look. The staff was rude, not even so much as a «hello» from any of the four employees working at the time and I walked by two of them behind the counter as I came in the front door. Not once did any of them ask if I needed help finding anything. In fact, not a single one of the employees said a word to me the entire 20 minutes I was in the store and there were only two other customers in there. In addition over half of the items had no price tag on them. I’m all for supporting the small business owner but that’ll be the last time I go here. I’ll brave the crowds at Bass Pro Shop from now on. At least they make you feel welcome in their store…
