I have been a patient here for three years, and I am so happy I chose this office. Dr. Fanelli has been welcoming, knowledgeable, and the entire staff really makes me feel that my time is valuable. I highly recommend this office to those who are looking for personable service, and a family feel. While they don’t have the mega-​store selection of glasses that some chains do, I will gladly sacrifice frame selection for personal connection any day!

Westside Family Vision has to be one of the best optometry offices in San Jose. They are very thorough and professional. The staff is very helpful, friendly. Coming from a medical background, I can be very critical. I cannot speak more highly of this office. I use them for my annual eye exam (for medical reasons). Dr. Fabian caught the appearance of a small retinal tear in my husband’s eye (later treated by an ophthalmologist with laser). We have been using this office for approx. 20 years.

I went once a year ago and won’t go back. First of all I was told that progressive lenses were a «cure all». Up close for computer work, distances, one pair of glasses all rolled into one. That is not the case. I know that now because I have seen another doctor. What I needed were progressives for driving and «computer lenses» for office work. I never heard the phrase «computer lenses» at the Fabian & Fanelli office. I’m probably educating them about it right now.
Secondly, I’m not sure if the doctors and staff were having a contest at the time I was there or what. Every person in the place tried to sell me «Maui Jim» sunglasses. Maui Jim… they are the best. The doctor himself spent a good five minutes on the benefits of Maui Jims. My eyes will shrivel up in my head without the protection of «Maui Jim» on my eyes. Cost for Maui Jims? $ 700 (but we’ll give you 20% off if you order today!). I told the woman helping me select my glasses that I would wait to purchase sunglasses until after I got used to the regular everyday glasses. She was disgusted with me.
If you want a mediocre office atmosphere, limited (but very expensive) frame selection go here. Otherwise, go somewhere else.

I have know Dr. Larry Fabian since 1989 and have always had the best advice in eye care. Not only eye care we talk about life, our families and even the motor home he bought from me for his family vacations. Thanks for always helping my family, friends and myself with eye care. I found Fabian & Fanelli as a preferred provider for Davis Vision. They were willing to see myself and my 13 year old at the same time. The doctor and staff took their time with both of us and were very informative with the process. I’ve had great service every time we’ve visited — both of us ended up needing glasses. The staff is very courteous and they go the extra mile to make sure your concerns are addressed.
Highly recommended to anyone looking for a good vision specialists in the area.

I have been seeing Dr. Fanelli for around 10 years. He is always very nice, professional, and knowledgeable. One time Dr. Fanelli was not there, I saw Dr. Dougherty. I felt the same way about her. For the first time today, I met Dr. Fabien. I took my six year old son in for his first vision appointment. Dr. Fabien was awesome with him! Very patient and professional. The office staff is very friendly, too.
In summary, which ever doctor you see here, you can’t go wrong.

Great doctors — very attentive and knowledgeable. Do not get me wrong, but the lack of stars is for their post customer care…
Went there recently to get my annual eye exam for contacts. After the exam the front desk lady, who apparently is in charge of ordering contacts, etc., told me that I should get my contacts from them. I was reluctant since I have paid a lot more previously just for buying through them. So I asked — what is the costs of this specific (Dailies AquaComfort Plus) if I buy year supply. She told me that it is $ 79 per box BUT if I buy whole year then I can qualify for up to $ 70 rebate… Then she told me that because of new laws (or what ever she referenced) buying online would not be cheaper since all online sellers have been imposed some fees to bring the cost to par with them… Hearing about this change for the first time I thought that maybe I should buy from them, but still — not a certified idiot — I decided to take my chances online.
Here are the results. Had I bought from them the math would have been as follows (excl tax): 8 boxes x $ 79 — $ 70 = $ 562… My cost buying it online (through
) for the same quantity and same brand… $ 320.61 ($ 36.79 per box + $ 26.49 processing fee)… Sorry, but $ 200+ is a lot of money for me.
Update: I received a call from Dr Fabian explaining the situation regarding contact lens pricing. Apparently there was a communication issue between reseller rep/​pricing policy and office staff. I do appreciate the call and the explanation. Still maintain my assessment that although they are great doctors and very attentive (they were able to see me few years back within minutes after I had an eye emergency), but still not convinced that they would be the best place to purchase contacts, but I will still buy all my frames through them. Thank you again for the call…

I drove by Westside Family Vision on my way to another business (Eye Luv Lucy) in search of the perfect frames. I decided I would stop in on my way back. Upon entering I was greeted by the receptionist who was less than friendly. I let her know I was looking for frames. I looked at several frames and found a few I really liked! I stood around patiently waiting for assistance. When I sought help and needed further assistance the staff seemed very annoyed and both Opticians were very unfriendly. Very disappointed! Especially after the amazing customer service at the first place I went. I ended up putting the frames back and leaving empty handed: (

I was referred to this office by my partner, who had a fantastic experience and made joint appointments for our next yearly eye exams. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. The administrative staff was very warm and welcoming, and we got checked in and seen within a reasonable time frame. The friendliness was very much appreciated, since small talk can make something as mundane as an eye exam quite enjoyable. :)
During my examination, I found Dr. Dougherty to be very patient and knowledgeable. She was very thorough in her explanations, and she was kind enough to answer any and all follow-​up questions I had. I especially appreciated this because of an innate sense of healthy skepticism, and I desire to completely understand what I am told before accepting it as fact. She definitively proved her expertise in her field as I bombarded her with inquiries!
The sales process was also outstanding. My partner was being particularly indecisive about his glasses, and the staff was very helpful while he made his final deliberation. Considering how much of an investment a pair of glasses is and how long he has to wear them, I was impressed at the honesty and patience we received while making a decision.
Overall, I had a fantastic experience. I would highly recommend Westside Family Vision Center to anyone in the San Jose area!

I’ve been coming here for about 15 years now. Have always gone to Dr. Dougherty. I like the efficiency with which they do all of the pre-​exam work. I used to come once a year when I wore soft contacts. I went through them for Lasik correction 5 years ago. Back now to have my left eye touched up. I have a mono vision correction, right eye does distance and left does reading. The distance correction is holding fine but the reading has slipped significantly. Not an unusual thing, and can be re-​corrected.
My only negative here would be the wait time between the actual exam and getting the office staff to process me out the door. Last time I waited 20 minutes to talk to someone about scheduling my Lasik date. Not sure if that wait was warranted but would prefer not to.

I cannot speak to the competence of Dr. Fabian, who examined my eyes, since I have yet to wear the lenses prescribed.
However, their optician, Bryan, made an impression on me. He was willing to help me try on half the frames in their shop without an eye batted, and, apparently, was not hired on a commission basis.

My husband and I have been coming to Dr. Fanelli and Dr. Fabian for years now. We are always pleased with our care and treatment there, and we enjoy that all the staff and the doctors take the time to explain things well and answer questions in a very thorough manner. They have always done everything they can to make sure we take best advantage of our insurance coverage for both visits and glasses.

If you care for the very best professions, this is the place. Dr Fanelli,

to boot. I bought glasses and a one week trial of contacts, which I’m planning on purchasing a supply after my re-​check next week. One of
5 providers in the area that carry the new Dailies Total 1 contacts. I suffer from dry eye and haven’t worn contacts in 3 years. These have
been out in Europe for awhile now, but available on a limited basis right
now, right here. Let me tell you how fantastic these feel. If you are looking for quality professional eye care look no further. Dr. Fanelli

So Dr. Fanelli is actually my second cousin so this could seem like I am writing this to favor family. However, with no acknowledgement of who I am or who I knew the people at this practice took care of me like I was anyone else. I called over the phone to see if they had a service to repair sunglasses. The secretary right away said to bring them in and we will fix them. I expected a wait and a small fee but they treated me like I was a standard customer ordering new glasses and at no charge. I am just impressed of how above and beyond this practice went for me. Thank you guys and I will be getting my prescription glasses through you.

This was my first time. Dr. Fabian examined me, he is a very good. I did order very expensive frame and my lenses were progressive and get darker out in the sun. This came to be very expensive about $ 1350, my insurance paid a big chunk of it my share was $ 400.00 still not cheap.
Then I got the glass (3 weeks) and I was told it will take me some time to get use to. After 3 weeks, I was not able to read with them so I had returned and I was examined again by Dr. Fabian he had an interim that was helping too.
I was told It will take about a week to get a new lenses, it took 3 weeks, I was very frustrated, using my old glass which had caused me some troubles driving and watching TV. I would had given the 4 star but they lose one star, because the progressive line was put incorrectly and it needed to be corrected but now, I am happy.

I was new to CA and a friend referred me to Westside Family. I have had contacts and glasses since 5^th grade so I am pretty aware of the necessary vs. unnecessary tests/​options and what insurance does and does not cover. I told the front office I only wanted what insurance would cover completed. This did not seem an issue. The technician and doctor were very friendly and all went well until I got done with the exam and they tried to charge me, after insurance, over $ 300 not including the contacts or glasses! They then stated that as I had not been there before they had had to do all the tests and also had to charge me for the contact fitting as it is a yearly must. The contact part I was ok with as I understand they did not have my previous files and results. I was not ok with them completing and charging me for tests that I had stated in the beginning I did not want done.
In the end, I had to pay the total amount that day, which I had only been planning on paying the co-​pay as all my previous 15 years of visits had billed me after insurance paid their portion. Needless to say I was broke and pissed off.
I had spoken with my mother who said that most eye doctors don’t overcharge for contacts due to the other options like 1−800contacts. So I ordered a 6 month supply once I had gathered up some more funds at a price of $ 172 and had to pick them up a week ago. Again, pretty broke but at least I had new contacts.
When I had only 1 month left of contacts I began looking elsewhere to see if I could get a better deal. I found them for $ 99 including shipping at the
. I called Westside to get my prescription and the lady who answered was extremely rude and short with me. She got frustrated because I had asked her to repeat herself about the left and right eye. A week later I ordered the contacts from the other website and they sent me an email that after verification from Westside they would ship them out but that if I wanted to hurry the process I could fax over my prescription from the doctor myself. I called Westside and yet again, another rude lady. She seemed very upset that I was going elsewhere for my contacts and as though printing my prescription and faxing it was a HUGE inconvenience to her and the company.
My yearly exam was due last week. Needless to say, I canceled the appointment and am looking elsewhere for another doctor. No way am I paying 3 times as much as I should be just because they can’t listen and attempt to hassle you out of as much money as possible in disguise as «yearly» test.
