Overall, a reputable salon with high-​quality cuts.
I booked an appointment with David because of Unilocal,and I was very impressed with the skill and detail he put into my cut. He asked me about the look that I was going for and actually listened, and even after a few months, my cut looked great and held its shape.
The way that he styled my hair that day was great as well, and I emailed him the next day to find out what type of product he put into it. He actually sent me links of where I could purchase the item online and told me where to find it for the lowest price, which I thought was awesome and helpful.
The venue itself is a hipster-​type design that feels homey and comfortable without being over staged. I would definitely recommend going to David if you’re looking for a precision cut and are okay with spending a decent amount to get a cut that will last. I think that my cut was around $ 100 or so.

So glad I discovered TokyoSF years ago, David ended up being my go-​to guy for nearly 3 years.
Both Tokyo & David ended up being like family and it was definitely a bummer saying goodbye as I moved to NYC.
While David books a long time in advance, you can just book multiple appointments for the future and if you become a regular, he can usually squeeze you into his schedule. One huge thing that I loved was that he spends about 45 minutes to properly cut your hair, which I really appreciate. I hate the $ 50 haircut you get in SF that takes 5minutes as they just churn people in and out.
He knows his stuff, explains what he’s doing, and is simply the best I’ve ever had.
Tokyo also has impeccable style and decked out the place to look/​feel like you’re in an episode of Mad Men.

Shannon is the best!
I have thick curly hair that she manages to shape and style in ways I couldn’t have even asked for. She’s all natural with her products (big plus! cause wayyy to many hair stylists use tons of chemicals) and she’s an amazingly grounded person.

Shannon’s amazing. Not only can she cut my fine/​unwieldy hair in a way that few can, but I always leave with somewhere new and interesting to try in SF. She knows the city well and she’s just plain fun to talk to — not to mention a thoughtful and talented stylist. Always look forward to my next appointment! (Which reminds me, I’m overdue…)

Do you know what a good guy is? I’ll tell you. Let’s say you are told you have to get a haircut for you new job. Additionally, it’s mentioned that «you should do something about those gray hairs.» Not kidding. Such is my profession. I know nothing about hair, less about «doing something» about a specific type of hair. So, there I am meeting David for the first time. I tell him my odd story. He asks a host of questions to help narrow what I should do next. Long and short of it, we picked out a style that will help down the road. He also called a friend of his to get me a consult on the «gray hairs» issue. (He doesn’t do color.)
I must have been there at least 45 minutes. At the end David turns to me and says, «you didn’t need much of a hair cut, so, no charge.» Now remember, this was the first time he’s met me. Let that sink in for a second. Of course I paid him anyway. He refused to take it. I insisted. He took only enough for «lunch.»
I come from a truly old school East Coast family, that I escaped long ago. But, every now and then someone does something that makes me remember how gentlemen, smart gentlemen behave. David’s an artist with his work, and a truly good guy.

Let me start by saying I have thick, crazy, unruly hair, and I am very picky when it comes to hair stylists. When I lived in South Bay, it took me years to find a place I was SATISFIED with, and even then, it didn’t really cut it.
My male boss recommended Tokyo, and I was a little skeptical since we obviously don’t have similar hair issues. I couldn’t get an appointment with Tokyo for a couple months, so I went ahead and booked with Shannon Kehoe. Let me tell you, this was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
Shannon is now the only person I will allow to put scissors on my hair, and I only need to go once every 3 months.
Shannon is great with keeping a low maintenance style, and has great recommendations for simple products you can find in a grocery or drug store! Thank you so much! Looking forward to my next appointment next week!

I have always worn my hair long with layers. I came to Tokyo to get my style more updated while keeping its length. While I was not expecting any earth moving but after what seemed like a lot of snipping off, the end result made me squeal with delight and I’ve never had that kind of a reaction to any haircut. The length of my hair remained but the shape beautifully framed my face and fell on my back sexily like a Victoria’s Secret angel. If only I had a body to match it.
Aside from that I learned curling iron-​free techniques that I can do on myself while blow drying my hair. Very much worth the wait.

Let me start by saying that Tokyo is the ONLY person that touches my hair. Period. I live in LA and I gladly drive/​fly to SF just for one of his magic haircuts. He is a genius and my dear friend. Plus the salon is comfortable, stylish and feels like home. Simply the best!

Shannon at Tokyo is the best. She has cut my hair (starting at a different salon) for a couple of years now and I can’t speak highly enough of her work. She’s very friendly and easy to talk to, but also doesn’t feel the need to chat through the appointment. More importantly, she takes the time to do a great cut with precision — including my perennially overgrown bangs. I am moving back to New York from SF and am trying to figure out if I’ll be back frequently enough to just keep going to Shannon… that’s how good she is! Highly recommend.

I came across this place after it was reviewed in Allure magazine last year. My regular stylist had just moved on, out of the Bay Area. My appointment was with David Fogle. He is so great! Really a master hair artist! I live in San Mateo, but will continue to drive to SF to see David. He is attentive and very detail oriented. An all around professional. I highly recommend him!

After reading a review in Allure magazine online, of which the reviewer stated she got the BEST haircut she ever had, I knew I had to meet the person responsible and let him work his magic on my oftentimes unruly locks… and did he ever! Not only does he radiate a kind warmth, and immediately made me feel welcome and comfortable, but he’s also a hair genius. I walked out feeling amazing. I can’t say enough nice things about my experience and the entire staff at this salon. Try it for yourself… you won’t be sorry!

My review is for David Fogle — Best haircut I’ve ever had!
David is a true pro who somehow makes my very fine, very straight hair look like it has some life! It grows out great, so I don’t feel like I need a haircut after a few weeks like I usually do.
Cute, low-​key shop is a nice change from loud salons, too!

My review of david Fogle is long over due. Several of my friends recommended that I go see him to get my haircut and told me how amazing he is. I was frankly skeptical. How amazing can he be?
Well, I am glad I gave him a try. There is definitely a difference between a master stylist with his Vidal Sassoon training vs most other stylists. Not only was my haircut amazing, David also solved a huge mystery for me about my hair.
After giving birth to my second child, my hair just didn’t feel the same. It felt rough and I began to accept that maybe I am just getting old and so is my hair. I am not that old. I missed the silkiness of my hair and pretty much gave up thinking I can get it back until I saw david.
As part of the appt, not only does he cut my hair but he started by educating me about my hair which no stylist ever done before. He showed me the back of my hair and said «see the breakage and roughness there?» I said sadly yes. Then he asked, «do you put your hair in a ponytail much?» I thought about it and then said yes. «Well, that’s why there is so much breakage right around your ponytail position».
It dawned on me that OMG, my hair roughness is caused by that as I started a habit of wearing a ponytail most nights when I sleep after birth of my second kid. So I am not getting old. I caused the breakage and didn’t even connect the dots. I was so HAPPY. ;-). Still am. My hair is silky again after a few cuts once all the breakage grew out. Yay!
The best part is for someone with david training his prices are still pretty reasonable and he spends 90 min meticulously and a perfectionist over my hair. I felt like a princess again. Thanks david for solving such a big mystery for me and a fabulous cut.

Simply EXCELLENT
I have been to many expensive stylists in the Bay Area and New York, yet I can confidently say that David gave me the best haircut of my life here. The hour-​long session with David slowly and carefully transformed a decent (and expensive) haircut that didn’t quite suit my head shape into an excellent style that looks just perfect on me.
The salon is very pleasant with tasteful vintage décor, very sophisticated-​looking.
David is a real artist who takes time to make YOU look good, not just on giving you a style that he happens to fancy. I can’t recommend him enough.

I can’t say enough about Tokyo SF! Tokyo is hands-​down the most talented hair stylist I know, and also one of the loveliest human beings I’ve gotten to know over the past couple years. Every time I visit his salon it’s such a lovely experience. Like the other reviews have said, he always has the perfect record spinning and the atmosphere of his salon is always warm and welcoming. It’s a place that you’d like to spend an afternoon — haircut or not!
This place is truly the newest hidden gem in the city and a must try to all of you that are as particular about their hair looks as I am.

David is the Jiro Ono* of hair styling — a craftsman with an impressive attention to detail and an intent focus on the customer.
Walk through the door of Tokyo SF and time slows down. The space is friendly and relaxing — simultaneously curated and unpretentious. The appointment takes longer then most, but you can’t hurry this level of mastery.

I got my hair cut by David. My hair is awful. Like, it might as well be silk threads, it’s so thin and limp. Suffice it to say, I have never before in my entire life been satisfied with what I look like after a haircut. In the past, I’ve always ran home immediately, to apply all the products/​home remedies to make my hair look less awful and to remedy any damage done by a new length. The only reason I ever got my hair cut was because eventually the silk threads would get too long to brush out every day, and they would border on dreads. Very limp, very soft dreads.
After reading all the reviews here, I decided to give my hair one more chance and trust David. Because of the placement of the power outlets/​length of the cords at the station, I was sitting facing away from the mirror, so I didn’t really see what was going on on my head until it was ready. At the end, David turned my chair around and my god.. . my hair… it looked… amazing! Like, I couldn’t believe that that was my hair. Those previously flaccid strands were now holding a wave and my bangs looked so Aniston (circa season 10 of Friends)!
David talked to me about my hair, about the products I use, told me some techniques I could try. There was no judgment, no hurry, I had his undivided attention. Basically, the entire experience was wonderful, and now, I’m a believer. For sure. Thank you, David, so much!!!
(P.S. washed my hair the next day, applied some techniques that David suggested, and the dramatic effect of the visit is far from worn off. Hair still looks fabulous, and you could tell that there was love in the cut.)

I get my hair cut by David, so I guess this is a two part review.
I remember when it was a neighborhood barber shop but I don’t remember anyone ever being in it, so when I began looking for someone to take care of my hair after I decided to grow it out, I was somewhat amused to find good Unilocal reviews for TokyoSF in that strange barber location. The salon: I don’t think I’ve ever been somewhere as fantastic and intimate as this place. It’s immaculately decorated, immensely groomed and has an air of comfort, style, chic and does the perfect job of creating a great atmosphere. You’d never know you were on California St in SF.
David: I knew I wanted to grow my hair out long enough to put into a mun (manbun, so shoot me). I didn’t know I had wavy/​curly hair and hadn’t the first clue about how to cut it. I went to him and with a few brush strokes and glances, he said a few words and I knew he knew my hair. I’ve gone back since then and trusted his guidance and extremely skilled hands. He doesn’t try to force my hair into something it won’t be forced into and he doesn’t try to sell me the moon to keep me coming back. He just does a damn good job and keeps on truckin’. I’m a client for life.

Tokyo’s cuts are the best! There are very few people who I trust with my hair, and he is one. While I am a former client of his while he was at Cowboys & Angels, I just learned he opened up his own salon (yay!). Whenever I’m in town, I try to make appointments with him for my cuts and Michael Madalinski for my color (who referred me to Tokyo for my cuts). They are both the *BEST* (and I’m quite picky). ;-)
p. s. Tokyo has formerly done editorial work for magazines in NYC. I think he can count Nordstrom as one of his clients, if I recall correctly, but you’ll have to ask him for the details.

I’ve been getting my hair cut by David for some time – a real artist with hair – and recently he moved to a new salon. He had described it as being like sitting in someone’s living room, almost a «speakeasy» of hair.
After my first trip in, I can say the vibe is beyond expectations. The art direction and general style of Tokyo’s new salon is exactly the kind of stuff that makes San Francisco great. Top quality talent, the best products (Sachajuan), and a remarkably art directed space create a top notch experience. Tokyo, Green and David are all super talented and super nice.
If you’re at all considering something new, start here. I’m pretty sure that, with a character this sophisticated and only two chairs, this place will be impossible to get into in a very short time.
