I go into consignment stores or thrift stores with hopes of getting a deal … Sadly, the smell, the management, and the organization remind me of what I am dealing with and I turn back.
This place is remarkable. Top designer items, presented in a beautiful way, and you are only presented the best… Not out of date stuff. Absolutely amazing. I couldn’t help but snag a new pair of jeans for more than half off and they were barely even worn! Boo yah!

Found the Prada air sole shoes that I always wanted to have. But they only have size 13 and I wear 9. But that’s OK. That just means I will constantly come back again and again to check for more.
They got lots of Dsquared items as well. I like that. But I would say they are overly priced as they are now on sale at Dsquared’s own web site and at Nordstrom Rack as well.
Bought two pairs of designer jeans today. I will come back for more.

I always like to add a few duds to the wardrobe from this awesome consignment store. The people that work here are really nice, and I almost always find something really cool.

So… this place is amazing! I bought a suite at the formal version a couple doors down but had to come here right after to check it out. I was floored by the quality of the apparel. My view was this: It is all basically brand new designer that happens to also be consignment. I can’t wait to come back and purchase some delectables for my wardrobe. My wallet is trembling in fear.

As a collector of a particularly obscure men’s designer who, in the 80’s, had an entire section of Wilkes Bashford (the super-​upscale SF specialty clothier) dedicated to his wares, imagine how thrilled I was when Miguel tells me that yes, he has a piece from this designer in the store. Moreover, he even snapped a few pics and text messaged them to me, sealing the deal. After literally hundreds of phone and email inquiries over the years to online as well as brick and mortar «vintage» and «consignment» stores (most of whom never heard of this legendary designer), Miguel is the real deal, and his store is among the very few in the nation to have helped this collector find a most prized vintage designer piece.

High quality consignment clothing for the most part. Because of this, it’s not a cheap consignment shop where you can pick up a $ 12 shirt, but you will find expensive brands in great condition that will last a long time. The men’s and women’s sections are in two different locations just down the street from each other.

Had a great shopping experience here today looking for a suit (and settling for a blazer) for my fiancé. The gentleman helping us, David, was very pleasant to work with. He was perfectly attentive without being pushy, offered us many great options which were both well-​sized and suitable for my partner’s body type, and was very understanding when we opted for a more affordable blazer instead of the all-​too-​perfect brand new $ 860 suit. Neither my partner nor I have ever shopped for a men’s suit before, and David patiently explained the modern conventions for fit and length, etc.
Prices are high but reasonable given the quality of the pieces, and a far better deal than the high-​end department stores.
We visited both Fillmore and Fifth and Cris today but found nowhere near the selection and help that was available at Sui Generis. Too bad my partner has less than zero interest in expanding his wardrobe — otherwise I’d expect to be back here often!

My first and last experience with the owners of Sui Generis was insulting. I had a few designer items that I thought I might try to consign. One being a brand new jacket that I purchased two months prior and had worn twice. i paid $ 400 for the jacket but decided I did not like it. When I showed the owner the jacket he immediately said, «Did you buy this on sale?, with an accusatory tone. I told him I bought the jacket on-​line and that he could look to see that the item was not on sale. They wanted all of the items, a total of seven, including the jacket. They told me they would email me a itemized report of how much they would price each item at the next day. A week later I called them to remind them I was waiting for the email and that I would have to take the items back If I did not receive an email that day. They emailed me that night with the items fairly priced, and said due to Christmas they were delayed in contacting me. Fair enough but still not professional. The next day I had regrets about the previously mentioned jacket. It was too much of a loss for me at the price they quoted to sell it for. I emailed them and asked them If could take the jacket back but let them sell the other six items. They emailed me back asking me to pick up all of my items. Included in the email were links to websites that had the jacket on sale. I never intended to try to get over on them. I was insulted by their bad business ethics. i would not recommend this place.

So,
Upper end stuff, they basically sift through all the «fashion» and pick
items, so you rely on their taste.
I enjoy this more than going to a single designers store.
I suggest you go in, browse and then ask one of them to help you.
Their taste is very good and if they have nothing to fit your look or the look you
are trying to achieve they will admit it and not try to sell you something else.
Every time I come out of there I get compliments left and right from friends and the wife. One time she did not recognize me across the street.
Shopping for «new» has become a waste of time for me.
I always come back to Sui and get better stuff.
The prices are not cheap, but the items don’t smell like old consignment
and they are choice items, which means even if it is a brand name unless
it looks good they won’t take it and display it.

This was our first stop last week in our search for a wedding outfit for my fiancé, and I’m glad it was! We found everything we needed: suit, shirt, vest, bow tie, pocket square, cufflinks, and even some shoe options. All beautiful pieces and very well priced for the quality. My man is very tall and skinny and it can be very difficult to find clothing that fits him and that is fashionable. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, knowing both when to step in with assistance and when to let us browse around freely. A young man named Morgan tended to our needs and offered great suggestions; very friendly and well dressed! Thank you guys for making what I feared would be a long and fruitless search, a successful and painless fun shopping experience. We’ll see you next time we’re in the city!

One of the best consignment stores in Northern California. They have great inventory, and sexy as hell employees to assist you with your darling needs. Some great classic pieces that are beyond hard to find these days. Plenty of Gaultier, McQueen, Dolce & Gabanna, Gianni Versace, and Givenchy that you’ll walk out feeling like a fine bottle of champagne not sparkling wine. The employees really help you by searching for your size, or any specific designer you are searching for. I’ve taken a few golden girls to shop with me and everybody has found something they just couldn’t resist. Now don’t be coming in expecting Buffalo Exchange prices, this is not your H&M thrifting type of spot. Bring the Franklin’s, and brace yourself for some fun shopping after or before drinks!

While visiting SuiGENERIS Consignment (both the mens and women’s stores are only a few doors from each other on the same side of the street) we found a few things here which surprised us. Most, but not all of the inventory, at least in the men’s store, are sized toward the small to medium men’s body sizes. I found a couple of shirts which were really nice, but being resale and one-​of-​a-​kind, most did not fit well for me. I did purchase one shirt which will be a nice addition to my normal summer polo shirts and my partner got gorgeous Gucci men’s shirt which she plans to wear as a lightweight jacket with a camisole for those days when the office AC is blasting.
The men’s store staff was quite helpful when engaged but my partner said the women’s store staff could have been more attentive, especially since she brought a garmet. The pricing is on the upper end for «consignment» but given the location and brands, and with some garments are tagged as new, the items offered are mostly in line and you are not likely to find another men’s consignment shop like this anywhere else. Cheers.

I stopped by a few times way back when they were located on Church. Back then the place was small, and staffed by pretty rude guys.
Stopped in today to look for a pea coat. Wow. Completely different experience. They had gorgeous clothing, the staff was amazing, and didnt treat me like dirt because I’m not a gay man.
I’m so sad it took me so long to try this place again! Definitely a winner.

At this point, the articles of clothing I’ve purchased from Sui Generis are reaching a plurality in my wardrobe. (Which I guess means that pretty soon they’ll have a simple majority, at which point they will finally seize the day and play Chief to my inner, prep school hippie McMurphy, a McMurphy who is, let’s be honest, by now an end-​of-​the-​book/​movie McMurphy, so, yeah, no big loss.)
In the interests of full disclosure, I am a short, slight man. That is, shopping in the regular world where all you normal people live is like shopping at the Big & Tall, and shopping at a Big & Tall would be like, Fuck, does everyone here have a passport from Brobdingnag? (Aside: My god, how do you people fly?)

Okay, okay – my point only was this: the Castro is the only place where I can find clothes I don’t immediately need to tailor, and Sui Generis is the best place I’ve found for Fine, Fine clothing that fits me. Sure, they’re probably a little on the expensive side for used/​consignment, but what if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t *want* to buy new clothes? (Yeah, it’s partly the environmental, recycling thing, but it’s also the challenge of finding Exactly what you want even when you don’t have 6 of every size and 4 of every color to choose from (or maybe it’s just that I can’t handle the existential debilitation that comes from so much choice?).) What if buying new is a non-​starter, gives you the howling fantods in fact, and so you’re always a thrift store kind of person, and yet still every once in a while you want to buy something NICE? Well, then you come here.
The service here is so kind and professional and caring you almost forget you’re in San Francisco. Granted, that’s part of how they get you – You want us to keep your things up here so you don’t have to hold onto them/​so you can forget that you’re already spending $ 180 while you forage for another $ 150-​worth of merchandise? – but still, there’s something to be said for the common decency of customer service. Especially when you can get for $ 300 a Helmut Lang suit that will, two years after you buy it, make a lovely-​looking young lady pound her fist on your table on her way out of the New Year’s bar, declaring vehemently into your face, whilst you were doing nothing but reading the New York Review of Books while waiting for your father to show, You look HOT!
So thank you Sui Generis, thank you for one of the highlights of my life.

Sometimes this place has some good stuff, but the majority of it is a rip off. If you don’t know a lot about fashion, stay clear of this place because you will pay a lot for something you don’t have to. I’ve found, several times, things marked vintage that were new – actually just last week I found a coat that I actually own, but the tags had been ripped out and they were selling it as «vintage» for more than I paid for it new. If you watch the sales at Saks or Bloomingdale’s, you’ll find better deals than this place. A lot of the items are really worn out too but they ask a lot for them. I dunno if they just don’t know what they’re doing or if they really are trying to rip you off, but there are definitely better consignment shops in the city.

This is a guy’s clothing place, but I must rave about their wonderful service. The guy I followed into this store wanted to improve his wardrobe without losing the current shirt on his back, and Uncle Unilocal came through yet again.
The sales person was wonderful about scanning the store for everything in the proper size, and in the end, my guy was set. Every article of clothing and every accessory was very clean and in great condition, and the entire store was well-​organized and attractive. Terrific brands from Japan, Italy, and many others. Expensive.

SuiGENERIS carries everything you have ever dreamed of wearing at discounted rates! Prada, Helmut Lang, Dior, Gucci… The best retailer in Castro. Period.
In fact, I’m going to head over there RIGHT NOW.

THiS PLACE IS THE SHIT! period. sorry if im flagged for my language but it IS the best mens store in this city. Great pieces from hard to find and the great designers in all GREAT… no… IMPECCABLE shape.
I will say that the guys there area goodlooking but never really smile and arent the friendliest… even though I wouldnt say they are rude either (hence the 4 instead of 5 stars). Regardless, they have expanded their mens store down the street from its old digs which is now going to house a womens store!!! uhmm… yup…
This place is a must frequent… dont just go once… keep on going back. They also buy from the public so… if you have any amazing pieces that your looking to load off your back… take it in… I would love to put it on my back (one day… possibly… if its DOPE enough ;).
MY favorite place in SF. PERIOD.

They have another store on Church Street (
), next to Sparky’s, but this one is all about high-​end consignment at actually really decent prices. Very nicely selected items from brands — Costume National, Junya Watanabe, serious stuff! — that should matter to the modern man. Even their shoes and sneakers, which I would rarely not think of buying second-​hand, were in near mint condition.
My friend Annabel was with me when I lasted stopped in and the only thing that made her sad was that they didn’t carry women’s lines. Our sweet and spunky sales guy informed us that another store might be in the works, to carry both sexes!
