Sound Speech and Hearing Clinic

This is a family review (me, husband, and 3 year old) for both Jody and Melissa. We have loved working with them both and should be recognized individually.
Jody was recommended by our daughter’s pediatrician to help her with her speech. My daughter started talking early (and rapidly) and developed a massive vocabulary quickly… which meant she didn’t practice her sounds enough and she was very difficult to understand. (Her understandability was around 30% when it should have been around 70% by her third birthday.) My normally gregarious and joyful child was starting to be embarrassed by this and so I sought support right away. Form day 1, Jody was nothing by warm and kind and loving with her and it took a few weeks to get my daughter comfortable and not embarrassed to practice her sounds… but Jody was the best. We spent about 5 months doing weekly sessions in the office, plus daily home practice, in order to get her up to speed. And she did it! After about week 3, my daughter couldn’t wait to go see Jody. It was seriously as enthusiastic a response as when I would say «we’re going to the park!» (For a long time she couldn’t say her «J» sound. It was only «G». So she would say, «Are we going to see Gody?» By the end, though, it was Jody!) And beyond her engagement with my daughter, with me and my husband Jody was forthright, honest, helpful, patient, and quick in her responses about insurance, home practice, metrics, and a lot more. I will forever be grateful to her for her skills, but more for her manner that welcomed us all.
Add to that, Dr. Melissa is in the same office, so I figured why not get my hearing tested while I’m waiting for my daughter? Separately, my husband and I did hearing tests with her and it was so easy! She’s super gentle and explained everything as it was going on. It was so easy to do. Plus she let me pick her brain on numerous occasions about hearing vs. listening and brain development. It was some great conversation with a very smart professional.
Together the two have a really special practice. It’s always a a safe place to be. Go, go, go!

My son is delayed in speech, and has been seeing Jody for a couple of years now. The progress he has made with her is just outstanding, and the care, direction, and attention she offers is what made the decision to follow her to her own practice an easy for my wife and I.
A great space, accommodating schedules, and my son loves her and responds to her. I can not recommend Sound! enough.

Who has two custom ear plugs and wants to go to every concert ever? This girl.
I had about a 10-​day jag late last year where I went to five or so shows; after just the first one, I realized my poor ears are too old for that noise. Enter Sound Speech and Hearing. The process was quick and painless. You get some cotton-​candy-​colored silicon squirted in your ears, then you sit around for a few minutes and decide which color (s) you want your ear plugs to be. A few minutes later, this elephant-​looking mold of your ear comes out, and you still don’t know which color (s) you want your ear plugs to be, because there are so many options. A few weeks later, your purple with red glitter ear plugs show up, and then you go on an excited jag of booking random shows with financial — but no longer physical — reckless abandon.
My ear plugs fit perfectly. They’re glittery, which makes me happy. And best of all, I can still really hear and feel the music super well, I just don’t have the day-​after feeling that my ears are full of cotton and dog whistles.
The Sound space is hip but cozy. It kind of feels like you got invited to your cool, good friend’s house. Melissa is great about walking you through the process. She’ll make you feel like your ear holes are special and perfect. (I have tiny little ear canals! No one has ever told me I have tiny little anything. I feel precious.) Honestly, I was a little surprised by the price of the ear plugs at first, but once I had them in my hands, the feeling of sheer glee of being able to go out and listen to all the music like I was a teenager again made them worth it. I’m wondering what other custom ear things I’ve been missing out on my whole responsible adult life that will make me feel like a kid again. I won’t hesitate to go back to Sound to find out. Just, you know, after this next show at the Fox.

When I’m walking through a garden and there is a perfect sprig of Stachys Byzantina (also known as Lambs-​Ears), it’s hard to resist the urge to curiously and delicately touch them to feel how soft they are, then touch my earlobes to compare.
This is the way Melissa will treat your ears.
I’m a audio recordist/​editor and admittedly have put my head cones in some questionable situations beyond constant ear fatigue, such as attending concerts resulting in tinnitus, going to a shooting range, swimming, and basically everything short of sticking a firecracker in my ear and lighting it.
That said, I was nervous about going in for a screening and honestly wanted to live in ignorance. Melissa, being a total professional assured me that whatever issues might come up, we would tackle them. As premature hearing loss is a constant fear with most audio folks and I appreciate that she took the time to listen to my concerns and ease my worries. This is exactly what you want and need from a health care practitioner.
She even e-​mailed me the results of the screening, and explained what everything meant, so I have clear idea where my hearing lies on the spectrum.
Melissa also fitted me for custom ear plugs with different filter options that are useful for different types of auditory situations. It wasn’t as uncomfortable as I anticipated and it only took about 15 minutes. And let’s talk about custom COLORS! I needed some glitter and vibrance mixed in my audio gear because black and white is so two-​thousand-​and-​late. As is that reference.
The clinic is beautifully modern, clean, and comfortable. It doesn’t come off as stark, it feels warm, which I can attribute to Melissa and Jody being just so darn friendly. They’ve also nicknamed their sound booth Shakheara, which is the hippest/​punniest name for an audio booth. Might sound silly, but it’s nice to have a little flavor/​humor thrown into a Dr.‘s visit.
Regardless of what your auditory needs are, I can’t recommend them enough to all people with ears.

I had an appointment with Melissa to get custom ear plugs for surfing. I’ve used all sorts of standard ear plugs but they were not great. They wouldn’t seal, couldn’t hear people talking, and as my exostosis in my ear got worse (surfers and swimmers, if you don’t know what that means google it now!) they were really painful.
The ear plugs that Melissa made for me are amazing. First off, they are cool looking. Secondly, they are super comfortable! When I’m in the water (swimming or surfing) I can hear people talking without any issue and have yet had to readjust them. They fit perfectly.
Getting custom ear plugs is way easier than you’d think. It probably took less than 15 mins to get the mold done.
