San Francisco Spa

Came here for a facial on a Bloomspot $ 50 for $ 100 ⁵⁰⁄₈₀ minute spa service booking today. DO NOT COME HERE! SAVE YOUR MONEY AND SPEND IT AT ANOTHER SPA! I wish I read my fellow Unilocalers’ reviews before buying the voucher because it was a bizarre experience. Have been to a good number of spas in San Francisco and this is the worst spa I have ever been to in my life. That includes the «spas» where I’ve received $ 40 1 hour massages probably from some unlicensed practitioner.
Pros:
–Convenient Location, Near MUNI 38
NOW… here comes the down and dirty.
Cons:
–6 lockers located inside the shower room with a sink. Co-​ed. Doubles also as the changing room. When someone is inside changing or taking a shower and locked the door, you have to sit outside and wait.
–NO footwear aka spa slippers.
–Robe is thin and see through. Creepy considering this is co-​ed.
–Walk into the gym and you may or may not see the spa host which also doubles as the person doing my treatment. No actual spa entrance.
–Spa located in basement level. Seemed dark, dirty, and gross.
–Very small steam, sauna, and jacuzzi.
–No refreshments. Only water.
–No amenities for post treatment. Not even a hair dryer until I asked for it. After walking in, I thought the place was small, but I still expected it to have facial tissues, q tips, and some fresh icy towels outside of the steam room and sauna.
–Shower faucet head was broken. I had to cup my hand on it for my quick shower. Subsequently, a large metal piece fell from the showering device. I don’t know what it was, but didn’t bother with it. Then I noticed the room started flooding with water because the drainage was not working at all. I had to put several towels on the floor to soak up the water so I can walk.
–Hair and empty water cups probably from previous clients that were scattered on the one and only sink. The spa staff had an opportunity (actually twice) while I was there to clean it up, but they just left it there.
–When I reported the issue to the front desk, the front desk already knew that the shower was broken. It would have been nice if someone told me that before I went in.
–Priced for a higher end service, but the way my facial was done, I could have done a better job myself. Here’s a run down: wet face, apply cleanser, apply towel wrapped around my face, wait another 7 – 8 minutes, then repeat again for another 3 times. In between that, the spa gal (which by the way never told me her name so I have no idea what her name is) massaged my arm and head a bit. The head massage was strange and not enjoyable.
–Dirty. Not sanitary.
–Co ed bathroom which is located inside the gym. Has a timer on it. Set the timer before going in or else the room will go dark. I was also locked in it since the door jammed and had to yell for help.

Gosh. I wish I had read some of the reviews prior to purchasing a travelzoo voucher to the spa. I’ve stayed at other Hotel Monacos before, and am generally a great fan of Kimpton Hotels.
However, my experience with the spa has been beyond disappointing and frustrating. Earlier this year I had purchased a spa voucher for the Hotel Monaco in San Francisco. It expired before I could use it, but I attempted to make an appointment at the spa so I could use the base value of the voucher ($ 125).
According to California state law, California Civil Code Sections 1749.45−1749.6, vouchers are treated as gift certificates, and the value of a gift certificate can never expire. However, when I was making the appointment, the reservationist informed me that I could only put the voucher amount towards the original offer — a massage AND facial, and that I’d have to pay an additional service (in the amount of $ 115) in order to redeem the base value of the original voucher.
I later called to speak to the manager about it, and pointed out that what they were doing was in clear violation of California’s gift card law — to compel a buyer to make an additional purchase in order to redeem the original value of the gift certificate. Rather then getting some understanding or help, I got attitude from the spa manager.
After reading all your reviews, I’m still upset that they wouldn’t honor my original voucher amount, but I’m pretty relieved that I never visited their spa.

My girlfriends and I planned a spa day and Hotel Monaco and it had to be the worst experience I ever had. There wasn’t enough robes for just three people. The services were bad and the facility was very dirty. As other guest arrived they were just as disappointed with the experience.

I wish I could give 0 stars. Terrible business practices, terrible customer service at the Spa — I will NEVER, EVER, EVER go to this hotel or spa, and I will make sure to tell all of my friends to take their business elsewhere. Marty, the manager for spa appointments, is a real jerk.

This review is actually for the Spa at the Hotel Monaco. I was very impressed that although this is a boutique hotel, the spa had a lot of the amenities that a regular spa would have: jacuzzi (co-​ed), sauna, dressing rooms with lockers, a gym and massage and facial rooms! We had a massage and facial and it was great!

This only pertains to the spa. Absolutely bizarre experience and the worst of thousands I have experienced. Not really a spa, actually. I have no idea why they would market this to local folks as a kind of ‘spa day’ experience.
–Oddly located through the gym, with no signage.
–No one to greet you/​help you find your way/​check you in. When someone did, they were odd in manner and very unprofessional.
–Six lockers in a strange changing room/​shower that is co-​ed! Line to get in there to get towels or to change from wet bathing suit
–Small, thin, see through robes (for the co-​ed jacuzzi/​waiting area) and no footwear
–My friend and I got got our facial and massage in the same room! I cannot say how strange this was. Why the same room? Why would anyone want to get a massage while someone else got a facial?
–The worst facial I have ever seen. I should have known when we were in a room with no sink etc. She applied cream and then put a towel on my face for 5 – 7 minutes stretches, leaving the room as I sat there wondering what the hell was going on.
–The jacuzzi (with kids splashing and playing!!) is right outside the doors of the treatment rooms.
The most awful, bizarre experience. I have had more relaxing/​better services at my local gym. #Fail

Review for Spa only– Worse day spa I’ve been to. We made four appts for a facial & massage through the travelzoo deal. two appts for 1230 & the other 2 right after-​because they only had 3 treatment rooms and was not able to accommodate four at a time. We got there around 1030am, no one was there so we utilized the Gym which was so tiny until someone arrived from the spa-​no one arrived till after 12. We also utilized the hot tub for a bit then went to Grand Café for lunch (awful place). The guy from the spa called my friend and was telling her that he’s been calling her the whole morning. My friend only received 2 calls from him, picked up on the 2^nd call. He said one of the esthetician called in sick so only 3 ppl will get facial instead. So we decided that only 2 of us will do the service of both facial & massage and the other 2 will come back next time. NO WAY! Not coming back next time, going to get a refund from travelzoo. He was soooo rude. The facial sucked!!! I can even do that myself… They didnt have any robes nor slippers for us to use. We found the robes in a drawer ourselves. No hair dryer until being asked, and it didn’t even work! Oh and this is a coed facility. They never mentioned that until we got there.

The Hotel Monaco «spa» is unacceptable. Referred by front desk at Adagio hotel. Low-​lights of the Hotel Monaco «spa» (which for a moment made me think I was ‘being Punk’d):
* Located downstairs from the lobby, the «spa» has no front desk, lobby, or guest check-​in. The «spa» room is accessible only through a very small fitness center.
* The fitness room doors were locked and required room key.
* 10 minutes for someone to let us in after calling the front desk and stopping two random hotel employees.
* Once in the «spa» room, no one was around for 20 more minutes.
* No locker rooms, lockers, or men/​women lounges. There was a futon next to the jacuzzi where we sat and waited.
* The coed sauna had dirty towels in it.
* There appeared to be 4 rooms with metal doors for treatment rooms. The massage room I was in gave the guy in the jacuzzi a great view while I was on the table.
* One of the doors is where hotel maintenance came in and went into a loud boiler room of some sort.
* The therapist was awkward in movements and flow. Not the best. 80 min. $ 160.
* I listened to both therapists calling Housekeeping on the house phone (mounted on the wall) asking for sheets because they were running low.
If I hadn’t booked with a credit card, I would have walked away the second I figured out the «spa» was a former maintenance closet in back of the gym.
