Reliable Caregivers

After 83 years of living I seldom have come across a business that meets its promises of service. Linda Leary’s Reliable Caregivers is such a enterprise.
My 56 year old son had to have his right kidney removed. He has no family for post operative care in San Francisco. While I and one of his sisters were able to provide day care, his evenings and nights need coverage.
Reliable Caregivers was recommended by two sources. When I called, I was referred to Linda, the owner, for consultation, She was responsive, informative, warm and understanding and agreed to an interview with me and my son in his hospital room.
During the interview she gather information about my son and promised caregivers that would be compatible with him.
She delivered 3 different caregivers that cover my sons needs for 12 hours a day for 3 days. They were all outstanding. Moreover, since we did not know what day or the time of day he would be released, she suggested that we call her office when we knew his time and day of release. We were able to give them 3 – 4 hours notice and a caretaker arrived as promised.
The high quality of skills that came with the caregivers impressed me as well as the dedication of RC’s staff in their response to our specific needs.
Without reservation I recommend Reliable Caregivers to anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area that needs a caregiver for a love one or them selves.

Reliable Caregivers helped me take care of my loved one for four years. The caregivers were very compassionate and dependable. They managed all the activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, transfer assistance and incontinence care. They cooked wonderful meals and managed all the laundry and even helped with shopping. The case manager was so helpful with oversight and even visited to make sure everything was going well. I would recommend them for anyone looking for reliable in home care and assistance.

Seamless experience from request to final billing. My 85 mother visited for a week and what has historically been a totally depleting and exhausting experience for me turned into one that I could actually enjoy. Instead of bickering, my mother and I had a great time together. Teresa Okonkoro was kind, attentive, hard working, gentle and very sincere. My mother will return early next year and we’ve already asked Teresa to come back again!!!

«My 90-​year old mother was suddenly stricken with terminal lung cancer in July 2011. The medical staff at Kaiser Hospital told us that the only option for my Mom was hospice care at home, which is where my Mom wished to die. They recommended several home care agencies, of which Talya Onorato of Reliable Caregivers impressed us most with her sincere concern for my Mom’s and family’s well-​being and her knowledge of hospice care requirements.
During the next four months until my Mom died in November 2011, Talya supplied excellent caregivers who provided competent and compassionate care in three 8-​hour shifts, 24 hours a day. My Mom was born in the Philippines, and most of the Reliable Caregivers assigned by Talya were Filipino. Although my Mom was fluent in English, it was a great comfort to my Mom to be able to converse with her caregivers in her native language. There was only one instance in which we felt the need for a replacement caregiver, and Talya was prompt in finding one. Each of the caregivers was kind and attentive to my Mom’s needs and helped alleviate much of the stress and worry on the part of the family members. Talya or the on-​call staff were always available by phone to address any concerns or questions we might have.
Reliable Caregivers’ service is reasonably-​priced per hour for the quality of staff they provide, but be aware that 24-​hour care will be very expensive when you total the monthly bill. This experience taught us the importance of having comprehensive long-​term/​catastrophic health insurance and/​or sufficient personal financial resources to pay for an indefinite period of home care. As the saying goes, you do get what you pay for.
At my Mom’s funeral I had wished that each of the Reliable Caregivers who had so faithfully and professionally attended to my Mom could have been present to hear the praises and appreciation from myself and our family members for their professional and caring service to my Mom in her final months. Unfortunately, they were already assigned to care for other aging and sick clients, and understandably could not attend the service. However, I hope that this glowing review will stand as a testimony to their superb work and our family’s heartfelt appreciation. I am not on Unilocal often, but when I do it’s to voice affirmation or disappointment of extremes… I feel most of the time, the only way we can make changes is by voting with our dollars, and Unilocal is the best place to get the word out for it.
I recently got married (yay!) and my father, who has a rare strain of Parkinsons disease, was going to make the difficult trek from Brooklyn to SF and back for the last time of his life. Since we needed care while he was here, I set out to vet a reliable caregiver. Thankfully, I chose the service with the name that said it all. They were perfect.
My first interaction was via phone with Talya. She had the most calming, reassuring manner about her, and set the tone for using their service. My interaction with her was wonderful.
The aid they sent to us, Dantes, was so good, my step-​mother offered to kidnap him and take him back to Brooklyn to work there. He had a great way with my father, and the rest of the family, which helped them enjoy the city, and the wedding. He stayed later on a whim, as needed, and was generally rolling with the flow. Traveling across the country with a 180 pound man who has little control over any aspect of his body was immensely challenging for my step-​brother and step-​mother… Knowing that they had quality help while they were here, was a huge relief for us.
This was the last time my father was to see his home state of California, and his only child marry. Reliable Caregivers made that experience easy easy as one could ask, and for that my family is extremely grateful. Thank you Talya, Dantes, and the rest of the team.

Vicki Paul of Reliable Caregivers is the geriatric care manager for my 89 year old Mom. She knows how to handle the toughest situations. More than a career, this is her calling. She found great home health aides and suggested a wonderful private geriatric doctor who makes house calls, even on weekends. Vicki coordinates the whole team, including Kaiser, to get my Mom optimal care so that she can remain in her home, safely and with dignity. This is a versatile agency that goes the extra mile. I recently partnered with Reliable in helping out a family and found their care and professionalism to be exceptional. I would endorse and recommend them wholeheartedly and without hesitation.

I accompanied my mother to apply for a job as a caregiver with Reliable. She has 12+ years experience as a caregiver in Souther California to several wonderful people from great families.
When we arrived, they gave my mother a test to take and had her go into a break room. There was another woman in there with a hand brace on. She explained that she was a caregiver, but was on disability, so they had her come into the office and sit there for hours. She had been there almost 4 hours that day. I chatted with her while my mother filled out the app. At one point, I decided to give my mom some quiet and decided to go into the lobby. The woman also went into the lobby to leave my mom alone to her test. She only had 15 minutes to go.
Like a scene out of film about slavery, a tall man (ironically a black man) walked out and tersely said to the woman next to me, «what are you doing out here? You belong in there. You can’t be in here. He pointed at her and said, «you in here» and then said to me, you may stay in the lobby. He then said to the lady, your are not allowed to talk to the woman who is taking the test. I told him that I had been asking her questions, not the other way around. He proceeded to scold her some more.
When my mother had completed the test, she handed it into another man. She had left a few questions blank because they did not apply to her experience. They related to measurements of urine bags, etc. My mother had never had to contend with changing urine bags. She was a live-​in caregiver/​companion, not a nurses aid.
There was a question that asked what to do in case of an emergency and it had multiple answers. My mother wrote that first she would call 911 and second the person’s family. The guy said, «You NEVER contact the family.» Perhaps some familie’s do not want to be contacted, but I am guessing the agency simply wants to have total control over everything.
I know that choosing care for aging parents is a very difficult thing to do, but these people scare me.
The guy said to my mom, «it is clear you haven’t worked through an agency, why don’t you come back in three weeks and see if you know the answers by then». He didn’t even want to see her resume. Here is a company that missed out on hiring a wonderful employee, that is more than experienced and reliable and since she didn’t fit their cookie cutter description, they let her walk out the door.
I can imagine that they charge familie’s a ton of money for their services, but then they pay their own employees practically nothing. I don’t want my mom working for a company that forces their employees to sit in a windowless room for 4 for hours, just to prove that they are truly disabled and then humiliates them in front of strangers.

I’ve worked with this agency for over a year and I like to make referrals to them as they are, #1 Professional, #2 Prompt #3 Attentive to the individual needs of patients and families. As an RN working with families in the Bay Area for over 35 years, I feel that I would use this agency to provide care to my loved ones.
