Description

Specialties

I am a licensed psychologist who offers individual and couples psychotherapy. In addition, I conduct psychological assessments and evaluations for adults.

I have worked with hundreds of people to help with crises, depression, anxiety, panic disorder, relationship problems, addictions, work stress, creative blocks, and other problems. I don’t believe in «medicate them and out the door» therapy. I listen and try to understand. I use a number of approaches and individualize the approach to the needs of the person. I work with men and women of all ages, sexual orientations, races and nationalities.

Unlike many therapists who say they do couples therapy, I have had specialized training in it going back to my graduate school days. I use a technique similar to that of the Gottman and Emotional Focused Therapy schools.

Being human in this modern world is stressful and hard. Pain can feel overwhelming. Counseling and therapy help reduce suffering and facilitate growth.

History

Established in 1999.

I’ve been working from my California Street office for over 12 years now. Over the years I’ve helped hundreds of people with both individual and couples therapy.

In 2001, I began seeing a few patients through Survivors International, a torture survivors clinic in San Francisco. I also began doing forensic examinations and psychological reports for some of these individuals who were seeking asylum through application to the immigration courts. I still apportion a small part of my practice for this work.

Business Owner

It is I returned to graduate school in my mid-30s, looking for a career that would be stimulating and helpful for others. I love psychology, and bring to my work over 15 years of earlier adult life experience.

As a psychologist, I have spoken at meetings of the American Psychological Association. I have also since left the APA in a dispute over the latter’s accommodations to the government’s policies on torture.

I believe psychology is part of a humanist-scientific-wholistic enterprise, with roots in psychodynamic theory, and broadly aimed at the understanding of ourselves.

Psychotherapy itself is about development, growth and healing.

I realize that picking a psychologist or therapist is an important, even stressful task, made more difficult by the fact that it is not a category that many feel comfortable giving reviews on, due to the sensitive privacy issues involved. I respect that, and encourage anyone with questions of any sort to contact me by phone.
