Established in 2003.

We opened on September 19, 2003. Our mission is to bring «slow food» (served quickly) to working people at a price point that offers a value for the quality and portions. We want to make healthy, quality food accessible as a daily diet, Monday to Friday.

We feature artisan soups and meal-​size made-​to-​order salads and sandwiches. Our newest offering for breakfast is an oatmeal alternative — quinoa cereal, hand-​blended in house with nuts and bake-​dried fruit. We offer free wireless Internet, and we love when customers hang out with us! We also offer breakfast and lunch catering and delivery for local businesses.

Our suppliers are local and wonderful. Bread & pastries from Semifreddi’s, local organic produce, coffee from Graffeo, and soup from SOOP of Berkeley.

Business Owner

Alison Rowe has always loved food and cooking. Summers in her youth were spent eating out of the family vegetable garden, catching blue crabs in the nearby river, selling lemonade on the street corner and mowing lawns. Her dad’s gluten allergy had her baking with gluten-​free ingredients since she was a kid.

In 2000, Alison envisioned opening a retail café downtown with healthy, gourmet, house-​made and locally procured food when she noticed there was no place to grab a quick bite and eat well at the same time. After researching and refining the menu to focus on a meal-​size salad concept based on similar restaurants in New York City, Harvest & Rowe Café opened at 55 Second Street in September 2003.

She’s not like every other person who just wants to sell you something. She is in this job because she loves people and for that, I’d go everyday if I could!

Don’t eat here! I decided to ignore the 3 stars for the first time ever and gave this place a chance (mostly because of convenience). I ordered the Caesar and it was the worst I’ve ever had. The parmesan anchovy dressing was all anchovy and no parmesan. The bread that comes on the side had a funky smell to it so I didn’t even try it.

I came here on a random Tuesday afternoon hoping to stop by and get a quick coffee. While the atmosphere inside is nice and quite spacious, and their menu seems to have a bunch of healthy options such as salads and green juices, I was not impressed by the staff.
I ordered an iced coffee, went through the whole transaction in a relatively normal manner, but when I asked the cashier where their milk/​half & half was she didn’t have any explanation of where it might be, no apologetic «Oh I’m sorry we don’t normally have it out,» nothing. She simply brought out a carton of milk from their fridge and plopped it onto the counter. I looked at her confusedly, and then she said in a flat, on-​the-​verge-​of-​an-​eye-​roll tone that I could pour my own milk into my coffee, and left.
Now I understand that coffee might not be the main thing that they serve here and so they don’t have their milks or creams out, so whenever people do order it it might be a hassle to have to take it out the fridge every so often. However, I think that the manner in which I was treated with was very rude and uncalled for.
There is this thing I’ve heard of called customer service where certain actions are encouraged, such as, I don’t know, SMILING! Or hey, maybe even OFFERING to prepare my beverage (instead of pointing at me to do it myself). Maybe they’ve never heard of it, or maybe they just don’t care. Either way, I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone; you can find an overpriced, bougie sandwich or salad at a million other places, but with halfway decent customer service on top of that.
When you walk into any establishment, the last thing you want is to leave with a sour taste in your mouth. Do yourself a favor and spend your money elsewhere.

Love this place! This little gem is right next to work and is perfect for a super healthy salad on a warm day, or a nice warm soup during cold days. The staff are friendly and there is always room to grab a seat to eat. There are two lines (one for soup/​sandwiches and one for salads). I usually go for the salads as the ingredients are always fresh. I would give this place a 4 star rating based on price, but everything in this area will set you back either the same amount or more, so giving a 5.

Always great. Used to go every day for lunch, my office was right nearby. Moved to Union Square area, now I walk all the way down just to have lunch at H&R. There is no place like this in my new office neighborhood. Very fresh and healthy food, large salads, every lunch hand made with care.
The price is higher than some other lunch places. But I can’t buy food this healthy and delicious at any price, in my current neighborhood.

1st visit, got the chicken noodle soup. It’s impossibly bland, which is probably helping my upset stomach but definitely creating an upset mouth.
The juice looks promising, and people on Unilocal seem to dig their sandwiches, but the soup is blander than the plain bread it was served with.

Spicy food!!!
They consider themselves organic and healthy, but when you order any soup or sandwiches everything comes full of pepper and spices. Not healthy at all. I’m very disappointed and I’m not coming back.

I’m always a little grumpy after I grab lunch from Harvest & Rowe — maybe it’s because I only choose to go here if I’ve been too busy at work to pack a lunch and I’m too busy at work to walk more than 15 steps from my office building to buy food… but really, I think it’s overpriced, undersized and not very good.
The menu looks nice, but everything is so expensive and not particularly well made. If i’m paying $ 6.25 for a «small soup» I want it to be seasoned well enough that I don’t have to pour in an entire packet of salt for it to be palatable (Note: I usually get the Green Soup, which is quite good once I doctor it up. The chicken noodle soup was boring and also unseasoned.). This is also one of the few places where I’ve thrown away a (bland, soggy) muffin that cost more than $ 3 because I just can’t bear to keep eating it.

I want to like harvest and rowe. I really, really do, but this is falls short of all my expectations.
Let’s start off with what harvest and rowe tries to be: they serve up a good mix of healthy options spanning soups, salads, sandwiches, and pastries. They offer a variety of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free muffins. they seem to always be baking up a storm in the kitchen.
I want to imagine it as a sunny cottage in the quiet country side serving up wholesome, delicious food, but that’s just not the reality.
Let’s start with the good first. Some of the food here is actually decent. I haven’t had a sandwich here yet that I haven’t liked. Some of the favorites include the prosciutto, egg salad, and caprese. all delicious! I’ve never tried to salads, but my co-​workers have reviewed them well (at least average). Other pros include some of their bakery items and their fresh juices (from plain orange juice to green juices and smoothies).
Now let’s move on to why this place gets 2 stars despite all that (i’d give it 2.5 if I could).
1) the PRICES! a «large» cup of soup (which is really sized small — normal anywhere else) will set you back close to $ 8 if my memory doesn’t fail me. I stared at the price tag, I stared at my soup. I wanted to back away, but it was a rainy day and I was coming down with a cold, so there was nothing I wanted more than a bowl of warm soup. I proceeded to the checkout, wondering how I could ever be full on this serving size, and how much I couldn’t afford to spend more on lunch (it’s absurd!). As I approached the cash register, I was overjoyed when I found out it came with a side of bread. Unfortunately, once I got back to the office and started noshing on everything, I realized that the bread was terrible. Threw it out immediately. Soup was decent, but nothing close to what I expected at $ 8 a bowl.
Little did I know that that crusty, dry bread would only be the beginning of my journey downhill with harvest and rowe. the next morning I walked in looking for a pastry for breakfast and keyed in on a delicious looking slice of zucchini bread (my fav!). I stare it down, tell the cashier that’s wait I want, and was shocked that it was price at $ 5. Seriously, harvest and rowe? You are pricing that piece of zucchini bread at 2x the price of peets? I know its vegan or gluten free or whatever, but come on. That price tag is KILLING ME. Regardless, went back to the office, started noshing part 2 and again, disgusting. Needless to say I’ll try my hardest to never come back here again.

I’ve been sick for about a week and harvest and Rowe suggested I order the «flu shot» to make me feel better.
Best decision I’ve made! The lemon and ginger soothed my sore throat and took away my stuffy nose almost immediately!
This is one «flu shot» that doesn’t make you sick just so you can get better!
I highly recommend for any cold.
Also, they made it hot for me to help with the sore throat.

The food is okay. Nothing too special. Yeah, it is pricy, but if is as organic and local as it claims, the price tag matches the product. Hence, it isn’t an everyday sort of place.
I work in the same building, and various times the building has given out gift cards, and my company has purchased and given out cards as well.
The owner has declared that the gift cards are expired, and they do not even have a method to accept their gift cards.
That’s dishonest, as money was paid for a product that was not received.
Additionally, it’s not legal. Gift cards do not expire under California law.
Myself and many coworkers have had problems here, and even though it is extremely convenient, we don’t come here.

I have passed by Harvest & Rowe for years but have never eaten here. I finally checked it off my list and while it was good I wouldn’t say it blew me away. I got the ahi salad and there was a fair amount of ahi in there but it lacked any big robust flavor which I’ve had with other ahi salads. I am curious to try some of their other dishes and see how those stack up though.

Unfortunately, when I walked into Harvest & Rowe for some chicken noodle soup on a cold San Francisco autumn day, I was dismayed to find that the soup was nothing special. There is little distinction flavour-​wise between this soup and canned soup.
If I am going to pay 7 dollars for a cup of soup it better be some damn good soup– or at least have some good marketing B.S. behind it to justify the price premium. Make it sound exotic, or put it among a selection of exotic sounding soups. Give me a choice of pretentious sounding breads. I would have liked to see some effort to justify the price.

I have to say that I really enjoyed my meal at Harvest & Rowe. I started with a custom juice — celery, cuke, apples and cilantro. Then I had some awesome soup — navy bean and veggies. Finally I topped it all off with a wonderful salad — made exactly to my liking. What’s not to love?

I find it funny that my review was about the SALAD i purchased and the message from the owner seemed to be a standard response to the mayo and sandwiches. in my book, any mayo is TOO MUCH mayo. And yes, I obviously have been to your ‘café’ a few too many times which is why I wrote the review.
Going forward — when I’m craving a SALAD I will continue to make my own (this week I bought a bag of premix salad from TJs which cost me little $ and made THREE salads).
As for sandwiches — well I already said what would bring me back.

This place is way over priced on oatmeal. they charge $ 5 for a small cup of oatmeal that is almost ¾ full — the lady behind the counter is sometimes friendly. I have been there thrice — the first time I thought it was a fluke but the second time I grew suspicious — the third time, it’s a pattern of over charging — also quality is inconsistent — the second time the oatmeal was way too dry and lumpy — first time was too watery. They won’t be getting $ 5 from me again — I am going to walk the extra block to the place down the street instead — it’s worth the walk.

This might be a new go to place for me. Everything is healthy and made right in front of you. I had one of their 6 soup options and it was delicious and kept me full. They is also a variety of sandwiches, salads, and juices which I can’t wait to try! Everything is expensive. No lying about that. But it is good, and healthy, and there aren’t a lot of options for that around.

Don’t bother. Today I paid $ 15 for one of the most disappointing salads I’ve ever had. I now understand why Mixt Greens was packed, and this place was empty. It really shouldn’t be that difficult to make a chicken caesar, but they were out of chicken, & couldn’t get the dressing bottle to work (yes really, he just got frustrated & left it off, so I ended up with a $ 15 box of romaine & the nastiest raw ahi. Here’s a hint raw ahi shouldn’t taste «fishy». Just eww. Complaining didn’t help as the employee assisting me didn’t understand a word I was saying. I’m seriously wishing I’d have just walked out.

Soooo first, the line was short but super disorganized. I tried ordering a sandwich only to have those behind me yell out orders first… I didn’t realize this was a first come first serve establishment — especially as the signs indicate a queue system.
Regardless, the wait was short and I ordered a basic roast beef sandwich and a fresh juice — the total was $ 18. You have got to be f*cking kidding me, I know the prices in the city are crazy but $ 18 for a roast beef sandwich the length of my pen and 12oz. of fresh orange/​pineapple juice? Suddenly the lack of line became clear.
Will not be coming back — I can have three much better lunches right around the corner.

SOUPS!

FiDi business lunch time adventures… These reviews are not exciting to write. Kind of pricy for a ½ sandwich and mini soup. However, their soup (green — zucchini, something else, and something else) was quite delicious. Okay «healthy».
Lines were long. People cut because I’m shorter then they are and overlooked. Thanks you amazon-​ian height people for being rude without knowing so.
HEFER STATS
½ Turkey sandwich ($ 5) — tasted like the catered sandwiches we get at work but with a twist… Sun dried tomato spread. Gives it flavor and color!
GREEN SOUP — tasty. Looked SO gross but it was pretty interesting and yummy. Is def. order it again.
Will I be back? Yes.

Rainy day and thought I would try this place out since it is super close to my work.
FAIL.
Not at all impressed with the salad here.
For $ 12 I got a spinach salad with chicken. It was overpriced and the chicken was dry and flavorless. There was hardly any toppings included and it was just disappointing.
With the myriad of cheaper and tastier options in the FiDi, I would not see myself coming back to H&R.
