Green Tortoise Hostel

I love the Green Tortoise Hostel! I stayed here in September 2010 for 5 days and am back this June for two nights. Not a lot has changed in this time. The staff is still very friendly, the atmosphere is fun and energetic, the breakfast is free, and the cost is low.
It’s amazing to be here — my roommates in this time have been from Greece, France, Australia, Texas, USA, and more!
The bed is decent. Thin mattress but whatever. You can sleep okay enough. I stayed in a 4-​bed dorm room. I love the storage units under the bed — I can fit one giant checked suitcase, one carry-​on suitcase, and one backpack.
Free breakfast includes: fruit (oranges and pineapple when I was here), toast, bagels, oatmeal, eggs, and yogurt + orange juice.
The ballroom is a very large area with long tables, some booths, plus a large adjoining kitchen and pool tables.
The cost is superb and slightly more than a couple other hostels and then cheaper than some others as well. But overall the value is great! With the free breakfast and various free/​inexpensive dinner and drink options — you got it made!

I can’t remember how I found this place, but I’m glad I did! I almost booked an AirBnB room but when I saw that this place had free breakfast every day, free dinner three times a week, and nightly events, plus it was nearly the same price as the AirBnB’s, it seemed like a no-​brainer to book this instead. While I knew that I could potentially book a cheap hotel (and get a private room) for just a little more, I figured that a cheap hotel would not be as nice as this place.
Yes, when I first entered the hostel I thought it looked a little dated and there was a slightly musty smell, but somehow that all went away as my trip progressed. I think it’s because the overall experience was so good that you end up not minding the psychedelic carpet and non-​fancy hotel smell. In fact, that all adds to the character of the place!
The best part about the hostel is that it is very clean. There is a woman there (and I saw a few other people too) who seem to be cleaning the place around the clock. I never had an «ick» feeling that I sometimes feel at inexpensive hotels. There were no corners or crevices that looked like they hadn’t been dusted in years. The bathrooms were cleaned twice a day and almost all of them had windows that were almost always open, so they never smelled bad or musty.
My bed had a top sheet, pillow and comforter and all were very fresh. The bed itself was actually pretty comfortable. The only downside I experienced was that I was given a top bunk and the ladder to climb up to it did not have evenly spaced rungs and I wish it had a few more rungs. Being only 4’10, it was a challenge climbing up and down. Plus, when you have a top bunk, you don’t have any place to put your things while you’re rummaging through your bag (unless you want to be rude and use your bottom bunk mate’s bed). Also, the mattress is not flush with the wall, so it was difficult to bring stuff up to bed with you, e.g., book, bottle of water, phone, without fear of it falling down… at one point, after having gotten up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, when I climbed back on to my mattress, it shifted enough so that a bag (mostly empty, thankfully!) I had brought up there with me fell down onto the guy below me… luckily he was not hurt and he was very understanding!
After my third night I asked if I could be switched to a bottom bunk. They were very accommodating and moved me to a room where someone had just checked out of the bottom bunk. It was a great move! The room was bigger (though it had 6 bunks instead of 4) and having a bottom bunk was SO much better. I could lay my things out on to my bed, and when I came in late at night, I could just crawl into bed instead of struggle with climbing up into it.
Also, the beds were made very well out of very thick wood. The other people i spoke to said that a lot of hostels have very cheaply made beds so that if you were in a bunk bed, if one person moved, the whole thing shifted, and climbing to the top bunk sometimes made you feel as if you were going to take the entire bed down.
I really wanted to experience the sights, sounds and food of SF, so I didn’t eat at the hostel much. I did grab a bagel once and it was great how they had coffee, tea, juice, bagels, breads, and fresh fruit out for everyone.
I did attend two of the events at night. The first was a restaurant crawl for $ 14. The price is incredible for what you get. First course was a cold noodle salad with a side of greens at a Thai restaurant. Second course was a minestrone-​like soup at a Greek restaurant. Third course was pizza and unbelievably delicious mini pastries at an Italian restaurant. All for $ 14 including tip!!! Drinks were extra, but were cheap ($ 2 bottled water, $ 5 beers and $ 3 glasses of wine, I think). The fourth destination was based on a vote. We ended up at a karaōke bar. I was getting tired at this point and left before others did, but it was a good look into local flavor.
The second event was an inexpensive meal at a Thai restaurant for $ 12. We could choose from 7 or 8 choices. Kerry, who coordinated all the events, strongly suggested the yellow curry. I went with the curry and found that she was right. It was so good. The portion was huge and I couldn’t finish my whole plate. We went to a few other places after that, but again, I was getting tired and left early. Kerry walked a few of us back. She was very friendly and a great event hostess. I LOVED all the people I met at the hostel. Many were Australian, some from other parts of the US, and a few from Israel, Holland, and the UK.
I have probably written too much already, so I’ll end with praise for the location. While it is located amongst a few strip joints, it always felt oddly safe! It’s an 8 minute walk down to the piers and a quick walk to the Muni underground rail or Bart bus stops.
If you want an affordable fun place to stay, pick this place!

We had an amazing stay here! Free breakfast everyday and free dinners 3 times a week, the dinner environment was lovely, you can help to prepare the food if you want or just show up and eat with many friendly and interesting travelers from all over the world. The private room was small but cozy, with a very comfortable bed. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful, with very good suggestions about nearby food and entertainment. The hostel is located on a street with a lot of strip clubs but we always felt very safe, and Little Italy is a few streets away. Highly highly recommend!!!

I updated my rating of Green Tortoise because the GM contacted me, investigated my case and explained the full occupancy they had that night as well the cancellation policy they have being minimum 2 days in advance. Our communications was a contrast to mine with the manager whom i spoke with on the phone, who was clinical and not too friendly — but of course she was just going by the books, doing her job.
I appreciate the owner making things right, the way businesses should be — for current or future visitors.

Had a great stay. The mattress was a bit hard but I forgot all about that after breakfast. I loved the music instruments that people picked up and played.

The best hostel I’ve stayed in yet. Staff is great, place is fun, beautiful and clean. As many bathrooms as there were, I did find myself scowering floors for one available on occasion. Aside from this, I hold the green tortoise hostel in high regard and recommend it to anyone staying in the area.

Haven’t been here in a couple years but I’ll still write a review. Awesome place, love it here, and it’s the only place I’ll stay whenever I visit San Francisco. The only thing that I have against this place is that you can’t smoke inside the ballroom anymore.

Green Tortoise: ! O, yes!
It is the place for coming home from the wilderness, raw, cut and haggard. I do not feel to0, self-​conscious here, as I adjust, nor will you. Even if your mind is still feeling the silence, and seeing images of streams, cliffs, trees and the animals. Your nose still filed with the scent of the earth… memories of the sun’s warm and the winds chill, the touch of new leaf.
Here though at the Tortoise —new scents, new ideas, new people and another glass of beer. Youth runs the scene, and the young of heart drink well of the times. From the woods to the city, is a change of magnitude. On a busy day, young eyes move about, the world still fresh, the meanings still open for debate and music still moves feelings, emotions and passions! Travelers talk, goes on, brag points travels, plans and who has shagged who or what is available
Honestly, this Youth Hostel allows for a good amount of free ranging meetings and movement.

Great staff! Daniel, Ness, and the kitchen Italian chef Eldilio (spell?) made it so special!
Ness was courteous, Daniel kept me company one late night and helped give me ideas for 80’s music before my event the next day, and the cook was unforgettably the epitome of the what the hostel was, old timey, good food, and just sooooo friendly. I hope the hostel appreciates him. :)
Even the Chinese lady who came in to clean with the short hair reminded me of Mrs. Kim from Gilmore Girls, ridged and strict, you know not to mess with her, but somehow you end up loving her.
The rooms were clean and there was always enough food to go around. I recommend this place :)

I booked these guys through AirBnB and was very pleased with the overall stay.
I arrived in the middle of the night and the young man at the front desk (he was new and from Ohio!) was super nice and answered all the questions I had about the place. He gave me a quick tour, explained the rules and off to bed I went.
The next morning I woke up and met my bunk mates, and ended up eating breakfast with them. The grand ballroom is AMAZING. There are booths and tables everywhere, a small library, a fully stocked kitchen and lockers for your luggage if you intend to come back. The breakfast is simple, but filling. You cook your own eggs, they have beans, bagels, an assortment of bread, juice, tea and coffee for you to use. They had a fabulous apricot spread, too!
The showers were a little busy between 7 – 8 AM, but I never had to wait longer than 5 – 10 minutes to use one. There are also bathrooms downstairs with toilets and sinks if you want to just brush your teeth, etc., instead of shower. They also have towels available to rent for $ 1, should you need one.
The staff I came in contact with, primarily Mr. New Desk Guy from Ohio, and the Italian gentlemen who graced us in the ballroom at breakfast, were SUPER nice. I wish I could remember the Italian guy’s name: he made me feel extremely welcome there, at a moment where I sort of felt sad and alone.
I would highly recommend using these guys! Super affordable and fun! I loved meeting people from different places and making new friends along the way!

Je vais pas faire des tartines dessus mais je recommande mille fois cette auberge de jeunesse pour un séjour à SF.
Son emplacement à broadway est parfait, vous pourrez tout faire à pieds ou à vélo. Le quartier en lui même est TOP avec les restos italiens à deux pas et une librairie très réputée. La salle commune est superbe et très bien aménagée. Le petit déjeuner gratuit est top: mention aux bagels et aux fruits frais.
La propreté des sanitaires est top et les chambres sont séparées par sexe et on est que 4 par chambre. Les horaires de discrétion sont respectés et il n’y a aucun bruit aux étages. Des soirées sont proposées tous les soirs avec des bons plans et des ordinateurs sont à disposition.
Le personel est très sympa et aide même quand on s’est ouvert le pied: D

I’ve now stayed at this hostel twice and would do so again and again! It is located in a great spot in North Beach with easy walking distance to Fisherman’s Wharf as well as the CBD for shopping. There are HEAPS of bars and great places to eat nearby. Its right next to Chinatown and Little Italy so really great options for food! Then its about a 15 minute cab ride to Mission district. The hostel looks very old school when you first walk in as its got crazy patterns carpets but it is seriously awesome there. I’ve stayed in both a private shared dorm and the private rooms and the beds are super comfy and cosy. The private rooms have a big screen tv with heaps of movies if you do want a chilled day inside. They have free breakfast every day and free dinner every second night (always vegetarian but so delicious!) — if you help out you also get free beers. The guy that does all the food prep looks like Luigi and he does a little speech before serving up– he is hilarious and good to chat to. Every night they usually have a different social thing going on whether it’s a cheap dinner out or bar hopping. I did the Rock, Scissors, Paper Tournament which was good fun. We did a bar crawl where you play the game with people from your hostel and other hostels in the area so it’s a really good way to meet people. They have free internet facilities and good wifi. They have massive common room to chill, drink, eat in and it’s a great place to get to the know the other people staying there. Highly recommend this place. One thing I will note is it is right smack bang in the middle of quite a few strip clubs (ha-​ha) but its not a dodgy spot at all– just thought I’d add that in there just in case it would really put you off! Will definitely stay there next time I go to San Fran and always recommend it to people going over.

The best hostel ever!
Very nice and HELPFULL hostel stuff. They could solved any issue, hostel is cooperating with a lot of places (bike rents, car parking, liquer shop…). Great localisation, probably the best in SF! Delicious breakfast and vegetarian diners!!!

Last year when my girlfriend visited San Francisco, she and her friends stayed at this hostel and so this year she was adamant that we stay here. We reserved a private room, which I feel was the better choice because drunken strangers stumbling into a room we’re sharing at 3 a.m. was not ideal for me. Plus, this was our one year and privacy was a must for me.
As soon as we walked in I could tell that we were in the right place. It was very cozy and laid back and the staff (particularly Flora) was amazing. She showed us around and there’s a kitchen that you can use whenever you want — you cook your own food and are expected to wash your own dishes. Fair! The dining area is HUGE and also contains a pool table and a place to plug in your phone and play your music. For breakfast they provide eggs, coffee, bagels, and OJ. It’s amazing.
There’s a separate area to use computers and just hang out — you can also print for 50 cents per page (I believe). There is an ATM with a $ 2 fee in case you need cash. Oh! You do have to pay $ 20 per room key but you get that back once you check-​out and it’s cash only.
There is a separate building a couple blocks down for people who have private rooms, which is nice. It was moderately quiet and the showers were never busy when we needed one. There were only a few times where we heard people coming in and out. At one point — the loudest part of the entire stay was when someone would wash clothes but Flora warned us about that and there’s a rule for no washing after 8 p.m. Very considerate! The room amenities were amazing. Because it was a private room we got a TV with access to movies. After long days in SF it was nice to come back and relax while watching a movie. And can we talk about the hair dryers they provide?! This thing was amazing — I want one of my own! It’s not one of the cheap ones that’s connected to the wall; it’s one that you’d see a professional stylist use.
This place is also within a five minute walking distance of pizza shops, bars, restaurants, etc. It’s really the perfect spot to have a hostel aimed at a young crowd.
The cons…
At one point while we were napping someone came into our room. I had no idea who this person was or why she had a key (the key in the door was what woke me up), as we weren’t told that any sort of housekeeping staff would be coming in. Plus it was about 4 p.m. — who does housekeeping at that time? The lady walked in, looked at us, and walked out.
Another downfall was that the sink in the room kept going on and off on its own. I’m not sure what triggered it but every once in a while it would suddenly come on and scare me then mysteriously shut off again. This happened about twice every hour.
Also, I’m not sure if it was because Flora was the first person we encountered and was so amazing that she set the bar pretty high, but when we were checking out the woman that helped us wasn’t too… Flora-​ish. She was a bit cold and short with us.
Anyway, I love the concept of this place and later this year when we visit Seattle, we’ll be staying at their location there! Thanks for an amazing time.

If you’re young traveller trying to «do» San Francisco on a budget, look no further than the Green Tortoise. This hostel, perfectly located in the city’s North Beach neighborhood, is the ideal place to rest your head after a long day (and night) of exploring the city.
The rooms are clean and comfortable. The staff is exceptionally friendly and accommodating. They go out of their way to encourage interaction with other guests and to provide local tips and insights to help make the most of your visit to San Francisco. For the price, the Green Tortoise offers everything (and more) that you might need. The front desk is staffed 24 hours a day which makes coming and going (even at two in the morning) and breeze.
The Green Tortoise has a variety of rooms to meet your needs and budget. I stayed in a double room (one bunk bed) but ended up having the place to myself. The rooms are all supposed to come with lockers beneath the bed, but mine was without one, and I had to store my things in the ballroom. It wasn’t convenient, but the staff at the front desk were willing to open it at any time.
Tips:
Bring earplugs. I can get a bit noisy at night.
Talk to the staff. They have great advice for seeing the sights and getting around San Francisco.

Staying with family while in SF wasn’t an option. Dropping a couple, few hundred dollars just to sleep in a room, eh, not so much. Among all the places I saw on Air BnB, this was my best option for location and price.
It’s near Chinatown so lots of options to choose from. A walk up the hill and I was quickly on my toward the piers. I had some time on my hands so I made my way to the financial district and did some window shopping. There are several strip clubs nearby.
Pros:
— Good location. Close to everything. I was told it wasn’t so great at night though.
— Surprisingly, my bed was comfortable.
— Activities — if you don’t have plans, the hostel provides group activities.
— Checking in and out was a breeze.
Cons:
— The building had a weird smell to it. It was bearable, not too foul, just a weird smell.
— I understand that the bathrooms were shared. It’s hit or miss with messy people. Also, it was a bit cold inside the building so sitting on the can doing my normal reading on the iPad wasn’t an option.
— Unilocal did mention how you can hear people at night. I was pretty tired and slept through the night but you can definitely hear things going on in the hallway.
This was nice to try out but I think I’d prefer a hotel or having my privacy (room, bathroom, less noise) renting on Air BnB.

Great location– walking distance to good coffee, food, and drinks, cool staff. Only a mile from BART.
Bathrooms are slightly beat up, but not bad for a hostel. There is an all night and all day club across the street, so it’s a little noisy– probably not as bad if you’re not on the street side.

The description on their website said this is a party hostel. So my girlfriend and I expected and feared a lot of noise, but that was not the case. We had a standard room for $ 89 which was the cheapest we could find in town with one days notice. The staff was very friendly and even helped us with an extra night which was not possible to get when we ordered online.
Three days a week there is free dinner of a good quality and all stays include free breakfast.
The location could not be much better right next to Columbus street which have many great restaurants, cafés and other delicious places for food lovers. It is also in walking distance from the bart train and they have a deal with a local bike rental shop. So transport is good from the green tortoise.
Anyone traveling to SF on a budget should definitely go to the green tortoise.

This place is awesome if you like hippies and partying. And I do. I got in from the BART, and walked here because their website made it seem like a short walk. Well it took me a good 20 minutes, with a heavy backpack, so it wasn’t exactly the most comfortable option. I walked past some really cool places downtown, and I didn’t think Chinatown was really that bad, so I didn’t find it all that unsafe with the amount of people milling around. The vibe for this place really encapsulates San Francisco. Everyone is super chill and free with the bud. It’s very much a hipster-​meets-​hippy establishment, with barefoot patrons and a very cool old-​school kind of vibe.
Well I came here on a Monday, which was awesome in that free dinner was served. It was some sort of creamy pasta with peas and carrots and it was basically the most delicious thing I ate all day. I was on a plane for 8 hours, and hadn’t had much to eat. The kitchen was a little confusing because it looks like a chef’s kitchen, but anyone can walk in there. Pick up a cup drying on the rack and fill it up from the sink with water, and you’re good. In fact, once you’re done eating, they want you to scrape off and clean your plates. I thought that was a really efficient way to keep a small amount of dishware constantly clean. The mess hall is set up like something from a camp, with a large dining area and chairs at each table, and an open kitchen. There was even a stage and a dude playing music.
The place is several stories high and carpeted, with apartment-​style rooms. There were several hallways, with doors facing across from each other. The rooms are cute, and the one I stayed in was all-​female. It had two wooden bunks, for a total of four beds. Underneath the bottom bunk, there was a HUGE storage space. You’ll want to keep your TSA-​approved lock with you, because even the smaller locks will fit. I was able to put my backpack in there, and could have probably put several more suitcases underneath. The room also had a small sink, wastebin, and mirror which meant I could brush my teeth in the room without having to find a bathroom in the morning. Each bed came with a pillow and linens that included a comforter (and you can rent a towel for $ 1, though I just air dried). There’s also a little light for each bed. I will say that though they don’t allow guests, the people in my room brought some. Completely wasted, they passed out on the floor next to their friend’s bunk. Uhm, ooookay.
The bathrooms are individual, for either gender, with a small sink and stand in shower. The showers I saw had a little receptacle of shampoo, conditioner, and soap. There was plenty of toilet paper, too. You can find the showers randomly scattered around, and even though sometimes the closest ones were full, I could always find a spare one if I walked down the hall.
PROS:
Really awesome vibe bordering somewhere between hipster and hippie. Not as bad as it sounds, really!
Tons of events and activities that you can do with other people staying there.
Free Monday night dinner. (I think they have a few other weekly dinners)
Beautiful old house, with carpets that are comfortable on sore feet.
Individual bathrooms, with plenty of toilet paper and even extras like shampoo, conditioner, body wash.
The room I was in had four beds, and even came with a sink, mirror, and wastebin.
HUGE under bed storage containers that can fit plenty of luggage, and definitely several backpacks.
Very community-​oriented. They recycle, you do your own dishes, you bring down your used bed linens.
I was here on a Monday, and it was still pretty full of people.
NEUTRAL:
Beds are pre-​assigned.
A lot of United States residents, with a few international. (not as many international people as I’ve seen at other hostels)
You don’t need a student ID to stay here, so the people here really vary in terms of age and background.
CONS:
The no guest policy really didn’t seem to apply, since a random girl fell asleep on my floor.
People here are friendly, but seem to keep in their pre-​established groups.
You have to rent a towel (but it’s only $ 1).
About a 30 minute walk from BART. More luggage means you’ll be tired by the time you get here.
Wifi is VERY slow here, but they do have a little internet café if you need to get online.
VERDICT:
I would definitely come back here again, when I’m not so jet lagged and tired. They do tons of events, and the vibe is really cool. Even on a Monday, they had an event planned to go to a nearby bar. I feel like you could even just spend a day hanging out here, meeting people, and just stay close by in Chinatown, and you’d still have an interesting day. The rooms were perfectly sized, with only four people, and included extra storage space, a sink, and even a bed light. The hostel is pretty lively at all hours, so I’d recommend bringing some ear plugs or an iPod if you want to get some sleep.

I must say I’m not a person to usually stay in a hostel much. But you can’t beat this place in the middle of North Beach in San Francisco. You have people from all around the world staying there and they do trips and do nightly events. Honestly it’s just a really cool experience if you’re open-​minded.

*Reasonably helpful staff (different types of folks working the front, each with their own disposition, but tolerating and helping me when I got panicky after losing my phone gives them a five star rating)
*I never had to wait to use a bathroom (plenty of bathrooms with showers on each floor)
*GT has free breakfast w/​out vouchers!
*Safe (Yes, it’s smack dab in the middle of sex shops and strip clubs. Yes, there are homeless folk all over the city. But I was never menaced by anyone malicious despite being a lone lady late at night, and the neighborhood felt fine and was central to many local attractions)
That’s all I truly care about, but here are some other tidbits about the hostel. Check in and check out was a breeze, stripping your bed when you leave turned out not to be stressful at all. I had a room facing the atrium, and the noise wasn’t too awful. I wound up not using the hoard of ear plugs I brought. The room could get miserably hot, though. Ask for a fan if there isn’t already one in there. Every bed has its own reading light, and people come and go at all hours, so I found an eye mask essential. The industrial kitchen is great, and you gotta dig the GT three step dish washing process. I thought their system of using green key lanyards for identification/​late night entry was reasonable and kinda fun. In short, I’m an introvert who just wants to use the can in peace, and even I really liked the Green Tortoise hostel.

Best Hostel I’ve ever been to! I’ve felt like back to the 60s, awesome people, great atmosphere and quite well located. If you’re in SF, get a room in there and enjoy your stay. :-)

Ça peut dépanner. Personnellement, on s’est fait virer de l’hôtel, mais on l’avait bien chercher (mode canaille californienne).
Idéal pour les petits budgets. Bön quartier, plus proche de l’océan et du vrai SF, que les autres hostels (généralement autour de Union Square).
La grande salle de bal servant de pièce commune (billard, canapés, etc.) est très belle (hauteur sous plafond exceptionnelle).
Les gens sont sympathiques et décontractés.
