History

Established in 1992.

From humble beginnings as one of the first dormitory style guest houses in San Francisco, Pacific Tradewinds Hostel has continually grown in popularity among select backpacker style travelers that truly want to be social. Today it has an avid following of fans who love it for it’s friendly homey atmosphere.

The owner, Darren Overby, discovered hostels by accident in Australia and has been in love with them ever since. He previously backpacked nearly two years in Europe on a budget of $ 1600. While there he researched for an independent travel guide and studied what makes a hostel great. He is passionate about creating places where community can happen easily. He is the founder and former owner of Hostels.com and now enjoys helping young entrepreneurs with startups.

Business Owner

When I was about 20, I discovered the warm and welcoming environment of hostels. Ever since then, I have been passionate about creating and finding community and I’m not shy anymore. I believe people in the world have more in common with each other than they think, and I like working to find the social connections between people. I also have come to understand that many people are secretly a little shy too and appreciate a friendly introduction.

I enjoy people that have something good to offer the world and strive to make it a better place. I always want to know about that special thing that makes you a unique contributing citizen of the world, so don’t be surprised if I ask you a few questions about yourself. I also like people who are willing to compromise their habits and routines for the good of the community

I think international travel and friendship is vital to our survival on the planet. I think everyone should visit some far off place
