Specialties
Cliff’s Variety is a San Francisco Institution renowned for «having it» for over 75 years. We are a contemporary variety store with goods spread out over two adjoining buildings in the famous Castro District.
In the main store you will find a serious hardware presence with fine woodworking tools, plumbing supplies, paint, light bulbs, locksmith services and glass cutting. On the other side of the store is a cook’s paradise with brands like Le Creuset, Sodastream, Cuisinart and Nespresso. Upfront we sport a great toy department, party goods and stationery. The Annex next door is where we introduce new trend products, maintain a well curated fabric section and house one of the city’s best shower curtain collections. On top of all that we are one of the cities go-to places for Halloween costumes and décor. Not only do we have a great collection of Halloween costumes but we maintain a year round costuming department. along with a great offering of Art &Craft supplies.
History
Established in 1936.
Cliff’s Variety was start by Hilario DeBaca, a retired school teacher, in 1936. Hilario wanted to create something for his son Cliff. Cliff was a musician and Hilario wanted him to have a «real job» to fall back on. Cliff never worked here. Instead, Hilario’s older son Ernie came into the business and the store continues to be run by the same family.
Cliff’s was originally a used greeting card and magazine shop. Ernie, a natural genius, could fix anything. After getting into a motorcycle accident that laid him up with a broken leg for months, Cliff’s started carrying bits and pieces or hardware for the project Ernie worked on at the back of the shop. The store continues to grow and charge organically as the needs of the community change.
Meet the Manager
Terry A.
Manager
The store was started by my great-great grand father in 1936. I was born and raised in the Castro. I am married with 2 daughters. All of us can be found here, well except for the 11 year old, we make her go to school most of the time: o)!
