It’s nice to chill out in a quiet place inside a boutique hotel just one block away from Union Square. It was a week day night, I felt it like a secret place in a noisy street, we enjoyed our champagne in Bar 1915.

The little bar that could… I’d been told about Bar 1915 — an easy place to just relax and have a conversation. It was true! I brought two friends over to Bar 1915 for a glass of wine and really wanted to catch up. We hadn’t seen each other for a few months and had a ton of chatting to do. Simple menu, simple wine selection — we sat in the lobby area, since the bar itself was packed for Happy Hour — but the lobby area was very comfortable. We were able to hear each other, which in general, is a feat in an SF bar! The staff were great, the price was VERY reasonable, and we LOVED the bread sticks! I’ll be back!

Bar 1915 comprises a portion of Larkspur Union Square’s lobby. The bar itself is tiny with only room for a handful of stools. In front of the bar are a few café tables and around the corner are arm chairs, tables, fireplace and sofas. The Bar 1915 menu is the same as the room service menu. The menu is simple, has a lot of comfort food and a few different mini pizzas. The wine list has a bunch of California selections, from Sierra Foothills, Livermore to Sonoma. Unless you’re staying at the hotel or want a low-key happy hour place, Bar 1915 isn’t that interesting and worthy of a stop.

Because the boy and I work on opposite sides of the city, we meet up a lot at Union Square. Finding places near the Square to sit down for a cocktail should be an easy proposition, but it’s weirdly difficult. Either the place is overrun by tourists, or it offers no cozy nooks for quiet conversation or it doesn’t look a good place for the preferred beverage(wine). I had high hopes when I found the listing for Bar 1915. It’s in a boutique hotel a block off the Square, it offers wine and beer(only) and light food options and it looked from the photos like a place full of cozy nooks — of which I’ve become very fond recently. Bar 1915 does offer comfy leather chairs and small seating arrangements. But those are superseded by the flat screen TVs showing sports and the«all my wine comes from one of the major distributors and can be found in every grocery store in California» wine list. Yes, I can be snobby about the wine list — but if you’re billed as a wine bar shouldn’t you offer something I’ve never seen before? Or at least something I can’t find at Safeway? Service was nice and unobtrusive, but Bar 1915 unfortunately will not be added to the cocktail spot rotation. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m on the hunt for more cozy nooks…
