Supannee House of Thai

This is my favorite Thai restaurant in San Diego! They have all of the traditional dishes you would expect but also even healthier options. I love the Yum Veggie salad with tofu or tempeh. The rice and noodle dishes are top notch and the portions are large. They easily accommodate special requests such as no egg, or helping you select a sauce or dressing that is just right for your preferred level of spice.
Extra tip: no outdoor seating so leave the dog at home.

I think I might have ordered the wrong thing here, as the reviews are so strong for this place. I liked it, but I think there must be better Thai food in town. Maybe people like it so much because it’s so «americanized»?
It’s fairly bland and simple without much of the wonderful ingredients that make Thai so special — many of the dishes were missing lemongrass or heat or other key signature additions that would be balanced by the heavy cream of the coconut in soups and curries.
I think we’ll be back, but I might investigate what people are raving about first.

By far my favorite Thai restaurant in SD! Fresh ingredients and pure flavors combined with friendly staff make this a must! The stone crab fried rice and fresh shrimp spring rolls are highly recommended.

Had the shrimp and bbq pork Phad Thai. It was a good sized portion with two baby eggrolls, small soup and a ramekin of salad. Loved it.

I accidentally chose this place because it is close to my hotel, but I was amazed by the food. Apparently I ordered too much: Thai iced tea, papaya salad and seafood coconut curry. They are all super delicious. According to another local customer sat next to me during dinner, this is the best Thai place in San Diego and they grew their own vegetables.

All of the curries are amazing! Their chicken has great flavor and never disappoints (I find meat to be the deal breaker at most Thai restaurants). The fresh rolls are also amazing (better in house than when you get them for takeout though). Their homemade peanut sauce is the best I’ve had in SD. The drunken fried rice is really tasty– every bite has so many vegetables-​definitely worth every penny.
It is the «freshest» and best quality Thai food in San Diego for my taste preferences. My friends that know about it always agree when I tell someone about it, too. It seems someone you know tells you about it and then once you go, you never go anywhere else after that!

Quality is not consistent as before. Each time I order a dish, it taste different and I’ve pretty much ordered all the main dishes (tod mun, larb gai, pad prik king, pad kra pao, pad thai, drunk enough noodles, Thai sausage). Today I ordered Larb Gai. It was sweet and bland. I had to add a few ingredients to make it good. Also the dish came with sticky rice which was hard. So disappointing because when the old chef (Nit) was cooking, I loved her cooking. Just not the same anymore.

Niece graduated from Point Loma and our party of 11 needed to find a restaurant nearby to celebrate. Supannee’s reviews were glowing so off we went to Shelter Island. What an absolute delight to have a celebration here. They accommodated our large group and were very attentive. The food was excellent: meaty, juicy, delicious chicken satay, shrimp/​pork summer rolls with yummy peanut sauce, red curry was fantastic (picked 5 out of 10 in spice), whole fish advertised on the blackboard outside ($ 25) was fresh and tasty with a strong kick, crispy chicken wings (soooo good!), house Thai fried rice, drunken noodles with beef and OMG sticky rice with mango — we can’t get enough of it. The restaurant was so crowded when we left around 6pm on a Saturday. Get there early or call for reservations. We will definitely return !

Don’t order take out from here. Person answering the phone was super hard to understand and there is a lot of background noise. Needless to say, the order was not right.
The hostess who was slammed is also the cashier for takeout. When stating the order was wrong, she said it would be 15 mins for the changed item. We said we will take it as is. We got charged for the wrong item as well as the addition that we didn’t want to wait for.
Turned out to be an expensive extra long wait for what should be a quick stop.

I really wanted to like this place. We drove from El Cajon to specifically eat here, since we craved an AUTHENTIC Thai place and this was one, according to the internet. We waited over 30 minutes for a seat, and 25 – 30 minutes for food after that. All that time, and I can never get it back from this place.
The food was good Thai to be sure. My husband knows what real Thai tastes like after staying on the Island of Guam for a while, where the food gets as authentic as it can outside of Thailand. He chose this place because it’s one of the few places that serve Nam Pao Tod, an appetizer of meat and veggies wrapped in lettuce. He wasn’t impressed with it here.
I had the drunken noodles and it was very good. My Hubby tries the stone crab fried rice, and that was pretty tasty.
So, Why 1 star?
I have never gotten upset at restaurant service before, anywhere! Until now.
1. We waited over 30 minutes to eat here, when there was a vacant table for 2 (set up and everything)… I noticed it when I went to use the restroom while waiting. I couldn’t say anything because the hostess was running around serving and waiting as well so I brushed it off. Red Flag.
2. It took the server over 10 minutes to come by to ask about drinks and take our order. Bad.
3. Every who was waiting before and after us were all seated at the same time. Those parties who waited less than us got served first. Bad. BAD.
At that point in time, my husband was afraid I would make an outburst, since my nostrils were flaring (as told by him, I wouldn’t know… I never knew I could flare my nostrils until today!) The server saved the day by bringing the food before I could flare my nostrils any further. Once I saw food any negative feelings dissipated so it was all good in the hood, even though I sent my entrée away to make it spicy since the waitress never asked me how spicy I wanted it.
All in all, we counted on the food making up for such terrible service… It didn’t work out that way. Seriously, if I get frustrated at a restaurant… Hey, now I know that it’s game over.
Note to Restaurant owner: This wouldn’t have happened if you weren’t DISASTROUSLY understaffed, on a National Holiday no less. (Food for Thought)

Decent Thai food, terrible service. I made a reservation for a party of 3 on a Saturday evening. My friend arrived first, informed the hostess that we had a reservation and was seated right away. When my husband and I arrived, the hostess/​waitress came to our table and asked if we have a reservation, which we did. Whatever, weird. We ordered the spring rolls, som tum (papaya salad), massaman curry, and gai yang (Thai BBQ chicken). After the waitress took our order, she came back and told us that they ran out of chicken for the gai yang. What restaurant runs out of chicken on a Saturday evening? Again, weird. Instead of apologizing, our waitress stood awkwardly at our table for minutes while we were trying to decide what to order instead of the chicken. We went with the chicken satay. The food arrived quickly: the spring rolls were pretty to look at and fresh-​tasting; the som tum had good flavors but I’ve had better versions elsewhere; the chicken satay was dry and disappointing. The massaman curry was probably the best dish of the evening, but the chucks of beef were too large. Not sure why they couldn’t have cut them smaller.
We were trying to enjoy our meal for barely an hour when the incredibly awkward waitress and rude hostess started to hover over our table. They kept «checking in» on us. But it wasn’t because they honestly cared about how we were enjoying our meal – they wanted to rush us out of the restaurant so that they could use our table for a large party. It was so rude and made me never want to go back to that restaurant again if even the food had been great. I could have (and probably should have) spoken Thai to the waitress and hostess to express my dismay, but honestly I just wanted to pay and leave because they weren’t even trying to hide their unprofessional behavior. The food isn’t authentic and their attitude is even less so.

This is one of my fave Thai places in San Diego! My family went in at 7:45pm on a Saturday. The restaurant was pretty busy so I’m glad they let people make reservations which takes out the hassle of waiting to get seated. The private lot is pretty small and it’s shared with a few other establishments so there’s a good chance you’d need to get street parking.
We decided to order entrees and share them family style so that we can all try a little bit of everything (it also helps you save money! We spent about $ 90 on 3 noodle entrees and 3 curries plus an appetizer to feed 7 adults AND we still had leftovers after!).
Portions of the noodle dishes are pretty big and can be comfortably shared between 2 – 3 people. The curries aren’t as big though (maybe 1 – 2 people per entrée). We tried the green papaya salad (my family liked it but I thought it was just okay), the mango curry with chicken (my favorite dish and a definite must try, I like it mild), the red curry with duck (mild, also delicious), the pad see ew with chicken, and the drunken noodles with chicken. We ordered extra rice since we were all sharing and the curries only came with 1 cup of rice each.
Everything tasted really good! Service was good but it took a while to get our food so that’s the one thing that leaves more to be desired. I think prices are very reasonable especially with how much food you get, and the establishment is very well kept. Overall though we had a great experience and we’ll definitely be back! :)

Overall [B+]: Some mismanagement tainted our overall visit, but the food was good enough for a second visit.
Interior/​Ambiance [A]: Nicely decorated space with a modern feel, light green walls and decorative rope-​wrapped chandeliers. Only room for about 40 people.
Service [C-​]: With the Saturday night rush, they really need some sort of professional seating computer program. They took tons of reservations, but quickly realized they had a group of 8 with nowhere to be seated for almost an hour. They literally made other patrons stand up and move around the restaurant in the middle of their dinner so they could hastily «make» a table for 8. It was embarrassing for everyone involved.
As for our party, sans reservation, we were told 30 minutes when we arrived. It took over an hour to be seated. We almost walked out. Then upon being seated, we ordered an appetizer only because we were now starving. The appetizer took forever to come out and even overlapped with our entrees coming out. A MAJOR pet-​peeve of mine.
Food [A]: The menu was inspired and hit all the best Thai dishes that I look for at Thai restaurants. They had Nam Kao Tod, Larb, Som Tum, Tom Yum, Pad Phrik King, Crying Tiger, and other harder to find dishes that made me excited.
Nam Kao Tod [A+]: Excellent appetizer with a very generous portion, perfectly executed. However, we only ordered this because we were starving and needed something to munch on. Well, it took forever to come out. In the middle of enjoying this dish, our entrees arrived. Good God people!!!
Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodle) [A]: Wife was pleasantly surprised that they made this dish pretty much correctly where most Thai places interpret this dish as an opportunity to get creative to reinvent the wheel. Don’t do it! Just make it the right way.
Pad Phrik King (Spicy Green Bean) [A]: Big portion with delicious sauce. This was prepared on point and I had no complaints really. The thin pork slices were a bit overcooked and unseasoned themselves requiring the base sauce to save them.
Overall, I would certainly come back but with a reservation only.

Beautiful clean restaurant, with a chill Point Loma vibe! It’s been a long time since I tried a new Thai restaurant, so we decided to stop in today to check Supannee out!
Overall, this review could have gone solid 4 to 5 stars, but I had to lean on the 4 star due to my experience with Thai food overall.
Things I loved:
–Drunkin Fried Rice. Very unique and unlike anything I’ve had before. I can’t place it, but the flavors hit my palette like a semi truck! Got it mild for the wife, but it would have been good at the medium spice level. Got it with beef, which definitely was the right call!
–Thai Iced Tea. You know if you are a thai iced tea freak, places can get this wrong. This place got it right! Could have had this by the gallon for sure! Not too sweet, refreshing, and addicting!
–Service and Environment. They were super nice and even put all of our food in to go boxes for us. I love the location in Shelter Island and parking for a Sunday lunch was awesome!
Things that were ok:
–Pad See Ew. I’ve had better, but this wasn’t too too bad. I think I love when the Pad See Ew noodles are darker and seared in a very hot stir fry pan (maybe a little burnt?). Not enough Chinese broccoli for sure! I loved that they used a lot of egg. Chicken was good, but not the best I’ve had. This dish is usually the metric in which I gauge a Thai food place.
–Masaman Curry with Beef. Great flavor, and beef was good, but it didn’t satisfy like I thought it would. The rice was too soft too. I think the beef could have been cut into smaller chunks. Not something I will get again.
I’m interested in their Pad Thai and their other curries! I will have to check them out again. Great sit down Thai food that would have even made my mom smile.

Walking in a resturant in this area without bomblasting music and over the top hipness it was refreshing for a «stable» feeling eatery.

It’s my place so far

I liked this Thai place… Well seasoned food… Watch out for the Inedible stuff like galangal root, and lemongrass. The dishes we ordered were all pretty tasty: stir fry halibut, tom yum soup, and drunken noodles. They ran out of rockfish, so we ordered the seafood stir fry which we sub’d with halibut.
Attentive wait staff that’s super friendly. It’s not exactly fancy but almost too polished to be super authentic. At times I felt like I was in the Hamptons for a moment with a mainly older crowd, but mixed. Casual but well groomed/​dressed.
We made reservations at 7pm on a Thursday, but it wasn’t needed… Wasn’t terribly busy.
It’s located in a shopping plaza, so there’s a shared, good sized parking lot. I’ll probably come back if I’m in the area and try the seafood fried rice served in a coconut! Otherwise I probably wouldn’t make a separate trip out it.

This was my second time eating here and I enjoyed every bite. I normally stay away from overly spicy foods but on this last visit I was feeling brave and thought I could handle sharing shrimp soup that was medium spicy, it was a little warm for me but I persevered and finished my meal. It was so good I couldn’t stop eating.
Half way through the meal, the waitress noticed my eyes tearing up from the heat and brought me a bowl of coconut ice cream to cool me down. This thoughtful gesture spoke volumes to me on this restaurant commitment to customer service.
I’m excited for my return visit.

I really wanted to love this place. It was cute and the lady working there was very nice. I’ve been to a ton of Thai places so I can be really picky.
I had asked for water and Thai coffee, even though I had to get it with milk. Some places will just give Thai coffee with no milk and I like it better plus it’s no dairy. It was super super sweet and had coffee ground chunks so I tried my boyfriend’s tea instead. That was even sweeter. My water didn’t end up coming.
The egg rolls were good. The pad Thai was very salty and bitter. When my boyfriend asked for waters and it finally came I couldn’t stop drinking. I tried his panang curry and it was good. I wish I ordered that instead.
I drank so much and now I feel yuck. I guess I just ordered the wrong things.

The food is pretty good. My huband and I nomally dine in but we’ve ordered out quite a few times in the past couple of weeks. The take out service is horrible. I don’t expect them to estimate how long it’ll take to prepare our orders all the time. But I have had to wait at least 20 to 30 mins longer than the time they’ve told us which is seriously a huge inconvenience; especially when your order is placd during a lunch break. There was also one time where they forgot to make my order until after i arrived and paid which was well after the time they told me my order would be ready. Word of advice: Add at least 25 mins to 35 mins to whatever time they tell you your order will be ready.

On a Saturday night this place is busy — I recommend making a reservation.
The food here is excellent, the service is good and the restaurant is clean and well presented.
We had a spicy salad as a starter, the spicy seafood curry and a peanut broccoli. The salad, although spicy hot, was an excellent mix of fresh Thai flavors. The curry was beautiful and the flavors were nice. The peanut broccoli was an excellent way to finish the meal.
We left so full, we should have missed out one of the meals.
Overall we throughly enjoyed our meal. The prices and serving sizes are excellent.
Would recommend this to others.

Pretty good lunch. I had the sweet and sour chicken. I’m not that big of a fan of Thai food, but it was awesome! The perfect amount of heat for their «hot» option. The egg rolls were great! The service was a little slow at first, but ended up being fine. Overall a good experience.

Went here twice during my short stay in point loma.
On my first visit I ordered the wan salmon which was just great! An explosion of flavor! And it was perfectly cooked! 5 stars
My second visit was not so good. My spouse ordered the wan salmon but it was not as good as when I had it, it was a little overcooked and dry. I ordered the barbecue chicken and it was a little raw even for me and I’m Asian. The green tea ice cream saved the day. 3 stars for my second visit.
I give them a 4 star.
Would I come back if I had the chance again?
That is a definite yes.

One of the best Thai dinners I’ve eaten, outside of Thailand. Order the lettuce wraps to start, they are to die for. Sister-​in-​law said her Panang was the best she’s ever had. Excellent atmosphere and service, too!

Meh. After a couple friends recommended this place, I had high hopes, but my experience didn’t live up to the hype. First of all, the tables are WAY too close together. To get up to use the restroom, one has to turn sideways and scooch past the adjacent table, pretty much hoping your ass doesn’t touch the other diners’ plates or topple their glasses. And I’m not exaggerating. It’s ridiculous.
Our waiter talked really fast and felt checked out. No small talk, no recommendations, no reminding us about dessert (which we would have ordered). I gave him a $ 50 for a $ 36 bill, and he asked if I wanted change. Uh… ya think? Then he hovered around the table until we left.
My date ordered a medium spiciness because we heard they were spicier than other restaurants. I ordered mild. They must have switched our requests, because his meal (Drunken Noodles) was bland, and mine (Panang Curry) was too hot. Sigh. The fresh spring rolls, however, were delicious, but their peanut sauce is too runny and they don’t give you enough of it. So I may be back for a to-​go order of spring rolls, but I’ll dine elsewhere.

This is some of the best Thai food food I’ve ever tasted! The restaurant is super clean, service is friendly, and the food is delicious! You can choose the level of spiciness. I like it somewhere in between mild and hot, but a little on the hotter side. Spicy is good, but too much might cause my mouth to be on fire! I wouldn’t want my tastebuds to be out of commission and miss out on any flavors!
Some of my favorite dishes here are the drunken noodles (I love them with scallops), the garlic chicken wings (which come with an amazing dipping sauce), and their tom yum soup (great taste of ginger and lemongrass)! I also love their Hawaiian Fried Rice which is served in a lengthwise cut pineapple. You’ll find juicy chunks of pineapple, raisins, flavorful crunchy cashews, and delicious meat and vegetables mixed with fried rice.
My husband and I are happy we found this place and it’s definitely become one of our top favorite restaurants in San Diego! We’ve eaten here at least a half a dozen times, and we’ve always been happy with the quality of the food and service.

I’ve been to probably over 50 Thai restaurants, & I have to imagine, with the 4.5 stars to over 600 reviews, I must’ve missed out on this joint in it’s heyday. The most bland Thai I’ve ever had, shrimp not butterflied, soup just loaded with mushrooms, separated broth, everything just lacked excitement & soul, which left me hungry again within an hour, something is just really off.
To their credit, I do appreciate that they offer grass fed beef as well as viable vegetarian options, albeit, unless someone can school me on that go-​to dish that I absolutely must have, I doubt I’ll go back.

Oh my goodness where to begin. My favorites are lemon grass chicken that you can only order from the dinner menu is to die for; the spicy green beans; pad thai and spicy noodles are delicious!
Awesome staff and the prices are reasonable.
Love love love this place! Five stars absolutely!

House made base sauces and fresh Thai herbs make these dishes stand out. We had the half lemongrass chicken that didn’t need a thing because it was perfectly prepared. Also had seafood in red curry and soaked up every last drop of the amazing sauce with our rice.
I can see why this place is so busy!
Went again for lunch and had amazing crab pad thai. Sigh — I wish I lived closer because I’d be here more often.

This is my go to Thai restaurant. I drive 20 minutes just to come here for lunch sometimes. The food is exactly what you’re looking for when you have that Thai food craving.
BEST Tom Kha soup in SD. I order a bowl or coconut soup at every thai place I go to and Supannee has the best, hands down.
The staff is very friendly, the place is spotless, and prices are more than affordable for the quality of food you receive.

Top notch Thai.
The satay chicken may have the best cuts of meat I’ve ever enjoyed in a satay. It was nicely flavored, thick and juicy. The peanut sauce was thick and nutty and the cucumber salad is fresh, sweet, and crisp.
I went with the spicy green bean with beef. The beans were fresh and still had a snap on the fork and to the bite. The beef was very tender and the sauce had a perfect blend of heat while not overpowering it’s flavor.
Don’t hesitate. If you enjoy Thai food — Supannee will not disappoint.

I’ve been here a few times, both with my weekly Thai Thursday crew and with my family. The food is consistent and always tasty. My friend loves the pineapple fried rice because it’s served in a shelled out pineapple boat. The spicy noodles and pad thai are both good. I’ve enjoyed the curries here too.
The location is cute with low lighting in a nice atmosphere. I also love that they offer natural real cane sugar sodas. The orange soda was super good –it tasted like an orange gingerale.
Supanneee is located in a small strip center on Shelter Island in Point Loma. There’s a small parking lot, which is great!

This is my favorite Thai place in San Diego, so let me rave. The food is so good here they actually take reservations! And you’ll find it hard to get in on a weekend or to get quick take out on a Friday or Saturday evening. I’ve waited an hour for pick up before but at least they are upfront about the wait. The ambiance is nice enough to take a date. The wine list, while not spectacular, is respectable. The best list is short with solid, local options and some Thai options too.
My favorites are the red curry with mango, the red curry with pumpkin, the Tom yum kai, and the drunken noodles. I can eat any of those dishes until I’m full to bursting. They also will happily make the dishes very spicy, but even their «mild» version of spicy dishes can be a little much for some. That’s fine for me though.
Other dishes that I’ve had include a fish soup special, green curry, stir fried eggplant, stir fried green beans, and Pad Thai. All of those dishes were solid, but I like my stand by dishes better.
They were great with my friend who was allergic to peanuts too. One solid warning and we had zero problems.

Wir haben hier sehr fein gegessen! Sevice war okey. Essen kam rasch! Und war wirklich lecker! Dessert war auch okey hatte zwar schon besseres Eis! Aber es ist empfehlenswert. Ginge wieder essen hier :-)

Supannee House of Thai — Giant Perch Pla Pakong –specialty dish not on the regular menu
Fresh fish of the day, tender and firm flakes of fresh giant perch fish. The skin crisped to perfection. Tamarindo, mushrooms, peppers, garlic, chilies, fried basil and shallots, and a array of delicious Thai spices. Ordered Thai hot!!! Amazing !!!

When I saw Supannee had 4.5 stars, I was sold. I love Thai food and have been to a lot of Thai restaurants yet I’m always willing to try a new one, especially one with such amazing reviews. However, I felt that Supannee didn’t live up the hype. Both my boyfriend and I weren’t super impressed with our food and felt that we’ve had better elsewhere.
I ordered my standard Pad See Ew with beef and no veggies. The flavor of the noodles seemed less soy saucy than usual, and considering that I have a major salty tooth, it was disappointing. The beef was okay but I’ve had more tender beef at other restaurants. The pieces of stir-​fried egg were more chunky than I’m used to eating too.
My boyfriend tried the green curry with tofu and ordered it Thai hot. There was a round vegetable with seeds in the curry dish (you can see it right on top in the bottom corner of the bowl in the photo) that was hard and seemed like it hadn’t been cooked. He wasn’t even sure what kind of veggie it was and it was odd because the other veggies were softer and cooked well. There was just something about the curry that he didn’t care for though and he’s eaten a lot of curries.
On the plus side, the restaurant is decorated beautifully and the service was fine.

Took my mom here before dropping her off at the airport after visiting SD for a conference. It was our first time trying this palce. We were seated immediately & place is clean and remodeled.
Our order came at a timely manner & were tasty. My wife and mom said the hawaiian fried rice had too much curry for their palates. I thought it was good. The pad thai, chicken satay and tom kah were all good also. We will definitely be back again, and bring more family and friends here before heading to the airport.

Long overdue…
I’ve been to Supannee House of Thai a lot of times and at every visit we were able to be seated quickly. TIP: Make a reservation as they can get busy.
Service is always good even when they messed up on my order. He corrected it right away.

All the dishes I’ve ordered has never failed me. So good…
At one of my visits, I ordered the green papaya salad «mild» and it came out «SPICY» with a 10. Yup, my mouth was burning. I usually off set my spicier dishes with the papaya salad but in this case ooh… I had to say something to our server and glad I did. He replaced it with a new one that was not HOT and gave me complimentary sticky rice because I needed something to kill that spice in my mouth.
Overall, I would highly recommend coming to Supannee House of Thai.
