Retrogression

For the record, I’ve never actually stepped foot in, or even laid eyes upon, the physical location of this shop. Heck, I’ve never even been to San Diego. The closest I’ve been is Orange County.
That being said, I live in San Francisco – the land of the bike friendly utopia (ok, maybe Portland is more bike friendly). Where there’s a bike lane on just about every street, a bike shop on every corner, and a mechanic for everyone. I’m a DIY’er and I’m pretty picky about my components. This is where Retrogression steps in. They are my go-​to online bike shop. Why would I order online, especially when I am just a stone’s throw away from so many cool bike shops? Well…
1. Retrogression always has what I’m looking for (if they can’t get it they really make an effort to do a special order) and at a great price.
2. Whenever I need help or have a question they always respond to emails in a timely, professional manner.
3. When they do respond, they’re friendly and super helpful.
4. They ship pretty darn quick. So by the time I’m able to make time to get down to my LBS a delivery from Retrogression is already at my doorstep.
So yeah, I’m ordering online, but I’m still supporting a super cool local, independently owned business. And maybe one of theses days, if I ever make it down to San Diego I’ll stop in and buy some stuff.

Found the shop on Unilocal and took my bike from Japan for a checkup just yo make sure it didn’t need anything fixed. They had it ready for me in a couples hours. When I went in to pick up they had just tightened up a few things and put more air in the tires. Great customer service. I recommend it.

Unfortunately I live in North County, because I’ve made RG my go-​to LBS. I don’t want to buy anything from anyone else because I love these guys so much. Great selection, better people. Dave Scrod (the owner) and his Wife are awesome. The people that hang around the shop are super cool too. If you ride fixed/​track bikes and have never been to Retrogression, you’re missing out.

Hello I am come this shop while on vacation. In my country we ride many track bike and have very good scene for this but always feel something maybe missing.
Dave tell me about Black Sabbath and I find what I am looking for. This make riding track bike much more sensible and everything okay now.
Black Sabbath has changed my life. I quit job, and am in process of building castle of many animal skull. It is lit with candle and burns bright with the blood of nonbeliever and geared road rider who wander through my town on bike packing trip. You to can learn the way of the black sabbath may take time but great teachers at retrogression.
If you need much track bike and more black sabbath you come to here and get fixed up.

Exclusively track/​fixed-​gear/​urban-​cycling but that’s why it’s so amazing. Whereas you’d go into your regular bike shop and they MAY have 1 track-​cog (that they’d have to dig through a drawer that hasn’t been opened in 5 years to find)…Retrogression will have it all and then some!
Best shop hands-​down for track/​fixed-​gear cycling, apparently the owner is an awesome wheel-​builder too.

I ordered a part from retrogression’s online store on Wednesday around 10 AM. The following day, my package was in my apartment ready for install. I have no idea how shipping was completed so fast! But thanks for the quick delivery! The item purchased was the andel standard crankset, the piece shipped in excellent condition, no scratches or dings! With militant drumming, battering riffs, and enraged vocals Black Sabbath has earned a place on quite a few of my «wake up the neighbors» playlists over the years. While calling them an institution may be a stretch, they’re certainly a band of workhorses, belching out no-​bullshit death metal as a fraternal quartet since 1968, and serving as a constant reminder that England is more than just pompous twats, spice girls, double-​decker buses, poor teeth, and a dry sense of humor. The whole band is a shuck — despite the murky songtitles and some inane lyrics that sound like Vanilla Fudge paying doggerel tribute to Aleister Crowley. Black Sabbath has nothing to do with spiritualism, the occult, or anything much except stiff recitations of Cream clichés that sound like the musicians learned them out of a book, grinding on and on with dogged persistence.
But this review isn’t about their poor taste of music, no, it’s about the shop. More importantly Dave and Angie’s exceptional no-​bullshit attitude when it comes to helping you. If they have what you need, and hopefully it’s related to a fixie or a track bike, you’re in the right place to get help. With that said, this is my go-​to shop for my track bike. They’ll charge you a fair rate for work and are completely open about what you may or may not need. On the off-​chance of calling them boutique, they are in fact a specialty shop specializing in fixed-​gear bicycles. Don’t bring your kid’s bicycle in looking for a tire change, you may well indeed get laughed at. I’d have given them a sixth star if it weren’t for that one time I heard NOFX blaring across their dollar-​store speakers.

They will always help the customer. Dave and Angie are good people. Dependable shop.

To the Unilocaler who complained about his handlebars «falling off»: Even if this actually happened, it wouldn’t be considered the shop’s fault. You either didn’t install them correctly, or if they were installed correctly, then maybe your stem bolts are worn out and they came loose. Either way, you can’t blame the shop for your bars coming off. Everyone knows Retrogression doesn’t carry crappy gear… they carry decent entry level stuff and upward from there — no b.s. I’ve bought from their online store before, and have also asked them for help/​recommendations and they are super knowledgable about bikes.

This shop is below average. I bought some handle bars from this shop and two days later they came off while I was riding. I had to get two stitches on my elbow because of the low quality item. I went back to try to come up with a solution and they completely blew me off. Last time I ever buy from here. Also, the shop smelled funky (weed). I wouldn’t recommend this place.

A nicer version of the LBS, focused on track bikes and fixed gear. That said, they’re not pretentious, nor are they overly embarked on a journey to tell you what you’re doing right, or wrong. A good brake from how some other LBS’s that have this focus tend to be like.
They’ve got a good variety of gear for their focus and prices are ~ actually pretty good, even when compared to internet prices. Some of their «discount» stuff (which is really just new stuff, not left over parts and pieces) are smoking hot deals.

Only spent 5 minutes in the shop after flatting on my touring bike. Nice guy behind the counter was patient and filled up my flat tire to get me home. Not a track/​fixie rider but man they have some nice gear and bikes for sale. Check em out.

Hands down the best shop for your fixed gear & track needs. The shop is very well out together and clean. EVERYTHING you would want for your fixed gear and track bike is under this roof! Not to mention Dave & Angie kick ass!

Great service and fast. Ordered something online on Sunday and it turned up on Tuesday in Houston. Also one of the few places to offer what I needed.

Awesome family owned staff. Always willing to help you out and give a honest opinion. The only fixed gear bike shop I will go to now. I drive from Oceanside each time.

Had a few questions on my purchase, emailed them and Scrod responded, helped and explained. Once I submitted my payment via Paypal, items were packed and shipped within 12 hours. Although it took two weeks for delivery to where I live now in Singapore via USPS, the wait was all worth it. Will buy again for sure!

If I could give six stars, I would. I deal with RG through their webstore on a consistent basis. As another reviewer said, prices are easily the best. They have products priced so low it makes you question why other shops charge so much. I have RG bookmarked so when I want to know how much something should cost, I check their site. And their price is almost always the best. They make it really, REALLY tough to buy local. Seriously, if RG were my LBS, I wouldn’t go to another place. Ever.
Now you won’t see the true colors of anything until things go wrong. I had a first world problem when RG sent me something different from what I ordered, and they promptly sent me the right item with apologies and told me to keep the wrong item. That’s customer service.

. That’s how I found about his shop. The guy answers all types of questions and helps members with their issues over the internet. If you have problems, you’ll get a genuine person responding to you.
If you want a shop that’s no frills, no BS, just top of the line service and parts at a low cost, RG is it.

RG is the shit. simple as that.
the shop is owned by Dave (aka Scrod) and his wife Angie who are really great people, its a small joint that knows what theyre doing.
they cater mostly to the Singlespeed/​Fixed gear crowd, but they still know how to fix/​tune/​build geared bikes or any other manpowered wheeled vehicle you drag into the shop.
everything is so low priced i always wonder how they even make money, but they seem to be doing great for themselves.
the online shop is fantastic, shipping is always lightning fast, and always a pleasure to work with.
they can get just about anything special ordered for you and its 99% of the time cheaper than anywhere else you find it.
tapping into the web forum will help you get questions answered and BS with some other biker weirdos which is great

first off let me say this place is kinda of haul from the city and is really tucked away, but worth the trip. I found this shop through word of mouth. The guy that runs it knows and loves bikes. He helped me pick out everything I needed. Prices were totally reasonable and he will even special order whatever you need. I’ll probably be back for a tune up.
