Regents Pizzeria

If you are anywhere near this place, go and get some amazing pizza. You might have trouble finding a place to sit. That should tell you something about how good it is though. Now how do I get transferred to San Diego?

Absolutely love it! We had the Dominic, there was plenty of the 14″ for everyone at the table. The best part was the sauce, not sweet, just a little salty the way I like it! Left everyone wanting more!
Also, the staff are awesome and the beer selection is superb!

This restaurant is conveniently close to my apartment, and I’ve been here several times for that reason. Overall, I would say that the food is pretty good, but I do have a few complaints:
1. When I order the «New York style» pizza slices, sometimes the pizza is slightly burnt. Thankfully, this doesn’t happen every single time, though.
2. This complaint isn’t about the food, but I try to avoid coming here during peak hours (evenings and weekends) because of how insanely crowded it gets. It can be tough to find an unoccupied table during peak hours, but in those cases, I have the option of ordering the food to go.
3. The food is a bit over-​priced, in my opinion, but the prices aren’t surprising given the fact that the restaurant is located in La Jolla.
My complaints aren’t severe enough to warrant a rating of 3 stars or less, but I do feel justified in subtracting a star.

A few months ago, I had the misfortune of eating at Rosati’s, a new Pizza and Sports Pub that opened in Encinitas. After having their version of a Chicago-​Style, I began to doubt myself, wondering if the brilliance I had once eaten in the Windy City was just a fantasy; it seemed that it was just image to be used, a buzzword to help sell subpar bar food and beer. Then I was lucky enough to get takeout from Regents, and I remembered what try Chicago-​Style was supposed to be.
On my birthday this year, I dragged my family down to San Diego to partake of the same. The place is loud, packed with college kids and locals all screaming and laughing over one another, a great atmosphere if you don’t mind the noise. The place itself is clean, great décor, and a darker, wooden look to it that’s very comfortable. You grab your food at the bar, seat yourself, and wait for the goodness to quickly come to your table.
We started with the Chips, Chiles, and Dip, an eclectic and tasty mix. The chips are thick, lightly burned for a nice bit of caramelized smokiness, and the chilies are grilled (instead of fried) and are surprisingly mild considering they haven’t been deseeded. And it’s all topped with their white truffle aioli which, a greedily admit, to not having enough to go around the table. I will freely admit to being a bit sad I didn’t try the Bacon Plate.
Next out was our Chicago Pizza, stuffed with pepperoni, sausage, and mushroom (we ordered it on the way to make sure it had enough to time). As noted before, this is a real Chicago Style. The toppings are layered, not sprinkled, meaning there is a thick spread of everything, before the cheese encases it down below with a great dollop of sauce on top. They bake it, let it set, and it comes out cut into big slices of warm, gooey pie. With corn meal sweetening the crust, everything piled high so it’s a tall and solid piece of pizza, the Chicago here is everything Rosati’s wishes it could be.
Keep in mind that a medium pie will probably run you close to $ 30, with a large topping out higher, but you know where your money is going both in taste and in sheer volume. That one medium fed four adults and a toddler (along with our second pizza) with all of us going home full with a piece leftover. Again, as a comparison to Rosati’s, you get a medium for about $ 25 and end up feeling like you wasted your money.
Last on the table was a New York, half pepperoni and half sausage and tomatoes. This was tasty, though not the best New York Style I’ve ever had. The pepperoni and sausage were pretty standard, but I have to say that the tomatoes were genius. Grace tomatoes, sweet and small, served piping hot out of the oven, they popped into sugary juiciness that almost burned the mouth in the chewing. Not bad at all.
So, again, great food, fantastic Chicago Style, vast beer selection, in a nice atmosphere, with a fun clientele, and they deliver. Man, do I love Regents. Not too harp on Rosati’s too much, but, thank you guys for putting my faith back in finding real Chicago on the west coast.

Warning Warning…
You might fall into coma when you come here, never in my 30 years of being alive have i had such amazing pizza, mozerella sticks, and wings. I am giving this place a because of the fact how everything was perfect. The service was so cool and friendly and they helped my fiancé pick the perfect wine she was craving they also recomended us a good pizza to have. As far as the price goes it was not that bad i mean we all need to take in mind that you are getting an amazing pizza and there obviously not serving you something unfrozen out the box, the atmosphere was great we got a table inside but the outside patio looked like fun as well. The place is Well kept, the restrooms are very clean and tooken care of. We will definetly be comming back on our next trip to san diego. Thanks guys

My go-​to place nearby for great tasting pizza. I usually get the NY Meat lover and I never get disappointed. Great quality and plenty of toppings and the perfect acidity in their tomato sauce. It’s nice and thin and the crust is seasoned well and has a nice chewy texture. I don’t usually enjoy eating the crust of pizza but this is an exception. I also have gotten the Chicago style meat lover but definitely would need to share with some one to finish as it’s pretty heavy.

Man o man! If you want the best Chicago pie pizza in town this is the place!
Well worth the 30 minute wait to for them to make it, I always get a pitcher of beer from their 30 tap.

This honestly may be my new favorite pizzeria! I usually go to «Lefty’s» pizza in north park, to claim one of their Chicago style pizzas, but Regents pizza definitely took its place.
I love how it’s similar to a «pizza and brew» place. They have a wide selections of brews on tap from Julian to a local brewery in town.
It’s a pretty casual place. You could either dine in, sit at the bar, or simply get your order to go. Whichever one you pick, you won’t be disappointed. ;)
Now back to the pizza. They have plenty of pizzas to choose from. That being Chicago style or New York… Definitely best of both pizza worlds! I decided to go for a Chicago style, which I believe you could never go wrong with, especially in SD. Anyways, I ended up getting the «Popeye» pizza, which was amazing! I honestly couldn’t tell you what was in it, but boy did it do justice in my mouth! Haha. I paired it with a Chardonnay. Oh, their wine selection isn’t that big… But who would get wine with their pizza? Oh yeah, me.
If you’re in the La Jolla area, definitely come and check this place out! The only annoying thing is parking. Which is incredibly small! But, the walk to the restaurant is definitely worth it!

Just came back from Regents, and I kind of miss it already…
Regents is by far one of my favorite places to go for pizza in SD! They serve New York and Chicago style pizza. I’ve never been to New York, but I’ve been to Chicago, and I gotta say Regents puts up a good fight. My boyfriend actually prefers their pizza over the deep dish we had in Chicago. The slices are about $ 4 each, but I usually pick the 1 slice and salad/​soup combo, which comes with a beverage (I believe it’s about $ 10 total). For all you hard core carnivores, I recommend trying the meat lovers (my favorite!). They have vegetarian pizzas as well. I usually order NY style because I’m into lighter pizzas, but if I had to pick a pizza to get Chicago style, I would choose the master. Mozzarella sticks also very tasty here. Last but not least, Regents is also known for their craft beer, and I believe they have up to 30 different kinds.
The staff is always friendly. The place is spacious with indoor and outdoor seating. There’s free wifi. The parking lot is small and kind of a pain when you come during peak hours. On the plus side, Regents validates parking. The customer crowd mainly consists of workers from the nearby businesses and UCSD students since it’s close to campus. It’s also across the street from grad housing and college apartments, so yeah, Regents can be a bit rowdy sometimes. It’s definitely worth a try!

This place is always busy and I love both the New York and Chicago style pizzas! I just got back from visiting Chicago and have to say that this pizza is very tasty! I love the Popeye (ricotta, spinach, and artichoke hearts — Chicago style). The New York version — the white pizza– (same ingredients + garlic) is also really good.
My husband is a big fan of 30 different craft brews on tap! They have tons of beers from all kinds of small breweries around San Diego.
They have a parking lot that they share with other restaurants/​stores in the plaza. At lunch, there’s free 60 min parking with validation but no charge for parking at dinner.

Stopped in for a quick lunch break. 10 minutes later I’m trying to figure out it takes so long to heat up 2 slices of pizza. There were only 5 occupied tables, so it wasn’t that they were overly busy. 15 minutes after ordering it came to my table and I realized why. It was burned. The bottom was so hard I could hold the slice by the crust and the pointy end would point straight out. I couldn’t eat the crust as far as the topping, I had a Chicago style meat lovers, it was just OK, bordering on not good. There are many other places with good pizza & service that I go back to. This isn’t one.

Ordered online — (NY meat lover & garlic knots) the receipt said 35min to pick up. Went to Regents 35 min later, garlic knots weren’t done??, but pizza was sitting there waiting. We took our order home… which was 5min away from the pizzeria. Our 18″ pizza was cold, the knots were still raw in the knotted areas.
There were 3 of us, only two ate the baked area of the garlic knots… both of us had «stomach problems»…enough said. Not ordering here again.

Summary: Highly Recommend. Best Chicago Style Pizza in San Diego. Good beer selection, too.
Fuck yeah! Love visiting Regents Pizzeria. I used to love walking distance and became a bit too pizza happy. I have since moved far enough away that I do not have pizza at least once a day.
Meat Lover Deep Dish is expensive, but totally worth it when it touches your tongue. The mix of flavor and texture reminds me with every bite why I am overweight.
Kate Moss is a liar; this pizza tastes better than skinny feels.
Top it off with a beer from the wide selection and you have yourself a recipe for a great experience.
Garlic knots are a great appetiser.

This is an above average pizza & beer joint. The pizza is thin, crispy and delicioso. I had 2 of the breakfast pizzas. The bacon and the portobello mushroom. The portabella was good however the bacon was sent from God to to change my life. If bacon gives you cancer then this bacon is worth getting cancer for. I’ll just stick with the chemo. The bacon was a thick cut and tasted like it was slow cooked for 10 days over an open flame by East Asian monks. Kevin Bacon couldn’t live up to this bacon. Pizza slices are a good size. Great beer selection. Staff is on top of it. I wish I didn’t live 90 min away or I would come more often.

As a UCSD alum, you pretty much think about Regents every time the word «pizza» is mentioned. It’s literally a walk across from the grad housing, and a bus stop away from off-​campus housing for local students.
I recently visited Regents after it’s «reveal» and boy was I surprised – in a good way. Regents is now the entire corner area where the old Tutti Frutti used to be. Bye bye small, cramped Regents. This one feels newer, buzzing, and packed with lots of pizza lovers, beers n tap, and a fully-​staffed crew!
I was impressed. I placed my order via phone and only had to wait an extra 10 minutes once I paid and waited for my large pizza to come out. It was delicious and LARGE. Did I mention large?! You totally get your money’s worth. And Regents pizza is a step up from your typical Domino’s or Papa John’s. The crust is unfailing-​ly crisp and thin. AND their cheese is not overly drenching. And the oils are definitely there, but are easily taken care of with a blot or two.
I’m just concerned about the availability of seating. Don’t walk in here on a Friday night assuming you can get a table for yourself or for a party of two, because you probably will have to take it home instead. When I was waiting for my takeout, I noticed so many patrons just standing around waiting for a table to free up. PROPS to Regents for upping their sales and making a larger establishment, but if their popularity keeps rising like this… they’ll need to build another story to accomodate for all of their customers!

Hands down the best pizza and craft beer bar in town.
Came with hesitant expectations as there are so many San Diego pizza and beer joints that you can’t help think this place may just be «another one» in the mix. Look no further. It’s really that good here.
The New York style pepperoni pizza is the bar which can set the standard. Thin, chewy yet all the flavor of a moist and crisp thin crust will fulfill your carb craving body. Add a thin tomato sauce not overpowering the pie and a mozarella cheese with enough chewiness and creamy melted goodness you’ll wonder how you ever liked any other. Enter the pepperoni slices that pack the flavor of a great Italian pie and suddenly you’re in pizza nirvana.
Couple this with a tasty craft beer tap list featuring many local San Diego breweries as well as out of town guest handles and you really won’t look elsewhere for this type of restaurant.
We also had the ghost pepper wings as an appetizer. Hot yes. Flavorful — still yes. Usually whenever you kick it up in heat you lose the flavor of a «Buffalo wing» but this was not the case. Heat to last you for days but a tanginess and briny-​ness that will keep you wanting more. Their bleu cheese is one of the best I’ve had. It’s a thinner consistency with bleu cheese chunks but doesn’t stink like bleu cheeses can get. Think of a ranch dressing blended with a bleu cheese chunk dressing and it’s perfect.
I’m a fan, and this perhaps is my favorite pizza and beer place in San Diego. Oh, how could I have overlooked this place all these years. Thank you fellow Unilocalers for the rave reviews!

Not sure what happened, but the pizza somehow got better after they moved a few doors down! Prior to the move, I felt that Regents was just decent and a tad bit oily for my taste. But on my most recent visit, the crust had great texture (crunchy and chewy) and there was minimal oil. It could all just be in my head, but the quality of toppings, namely the pepperoni and sausage seem to have improved as well.
It must be all the awesome UCSD students that give this place such good vibes, because on a Friday night this seems like the place to be! And as a bonus, they have a doggy friendly patio. So if you’re like me and are dog-​less dog lover, you can gawk at other people’s furry friends.

The No1DP was back in town and neither of us wanted to get out of the hotel room. He made the suggestion of delivering pizza to the hotel and this was the first listing that offered delivery. This was my first time that I had delivery to a hotel room and I had to confirm that yes, they did deliver to our hotel.
The No1DP loves his New York slices so he asked for a New York style pepperoni pizza (14″ — $ 16.50). I added a half order of garlic knots ($ 4.50), a small Greek salad ($ 7.25) and tiramisu ($ 4.95). Within 50 minutes someone was knocking at our door with said orders.
Though I appreciated the creature comforts of my hotel room, this came at the expense of the quality of the delivery. Everything was quite average that I didn’t even bother to take pictures of said food items but I was happy that I could eat out of the cartons with provided utensils. As I had work in several hours all I cared about was sustenance to make it through my shift, which this delivery food did well. However, the fact that this was delivered meant that the pizza was not as fresh and the garlic knots weren’t hot. I could have easily spent less money on Papa Johns delivery and had similar quality pizza.
The Greek salad and tiramisu were delicious but they’re preprepared dishes so it’s a little hard not to get those orders right.
I feel that this delivery doesn’t do this pizzeria justice. I would love to go back to the restaurant itself and see whether I can get a better quality pizza inside their doors. As for delivery I’ll just stick to my Papa Johns or Dominos as for the most part delivery quality is consistent among the chains.

Holy camoley, get your stomachs ready for some ginormous pizza pies.
We haven’t been to Regents since their move to corner location in the same center. Their new shop is larger with outdoor patio seating. Prior to ordering, check out the glass case with their pizzas. Mouthwatering!
The people who work here offer only the best service. Collectively everyone had such a great attitude and nothing but smiles from all employees – sincerely appreciate this!
We tried the 10 inch Monster Chicago pizza and this is definitely two full meals for a couple who loves to eat. The bread is chewy on the inside and the crust is crispy. The layers of cheese, meat, and vegetables is a home run for any deep dish pizza lover.
I totally recommend checking out Regents if you’re in the SD area and craving a deep dish pizza.

I’ve had this place bookmarked for quite awhile now and FINALLY tried this place when a friend suggested to have their pizza delivered. We ordered a New York style pizza & a Chicago deep dish.
The estimated time of delivery was 1 hour. We waited patiently for over an hour when we decided to call for an update. It took about an hour and a half to get our order. Luckily, the pizza was really good, we forgot about the long wait. I personally liked the Chicago deep dish much more than the New York. My husband is from Chicago so I’ve been hearing him talk about it for 11 years now & the struggle to find something that was good enough for him has been a challenge. Regents Pizzeria was a winner for him. The slices were so thick, cheesy, flavorful, & loaded. I wish I didn’t eat the New York slice so I could’ve had another slice of the deep dish!
As amazing as the pizza was, the 2 pizzas including delivering was about $ 70!!! Whoa… but we added chicken & it fed 5 of us with a few leftover slices.
The bar for delivered pizza (or any pizza) has just been raised.

Regents, by far, is my favorite Chicago deep dish.
Weirdly enough, it’s not the toppings that keep me coming back, but rather the crust. Their crust is beautifully baked: soft on the inside, crusty on the outside, and salted appropriately.
They have a variety of condiments available at their sit in location: condiments beyond pepper flakes and parm. They have those, plus garlic powder and oregano which I think is pretty thoughtful. Tried their minestrone… really yummy.
I’m not in love with their thin crust, but it’s nice to have a different option.
The tap list is amazing and always rotating. The manager is pretty flexible if you want to buy dough to take home. Totally worth it. They’re a bit pricier than other places that sell Chicago deep dish, but the quality is well worth it.
I’ve given up on leftys and Berkeley and trek out to utc when I really have the Chicago style craving.

For a pizza joint that is very convenient in location for me, Regents Pizzeria never disappoints!
They serve both New York and Chicago style pizzas, both that are very popular among my friends and I. I personally prefer New York style pizza just because Chicago style is too heavy for my taste. I generally aim to try different flavors each time I go, but I highly recommend the BBQ Chicken and PPJ (Pepperoni & Jalapeño)!
The BBQ Chicken has fresh, real onions (see photo) that instantaneously elevates the quality of the pizza itself. These pizzas are even better when you eat the way real New Yorkers do, folding it in half and eating it like a sandwich. The flavor is stronger, and there’s more deliciousness in each and every bite.
The ambience of the restaurant is similar to a brewery with a dark atmosphere that resembles Draft Republic. It even has lovely outdoor seating.
I highly recommend Regents Pizzeria if you’re craving something more than the typical delivery pizza companies like Round Table or Papa John’s.
For ~$ 4 a slice, definitely worth checking out despite being a bit pricier.

My favorite place for New York style pizza! I haven’t tried New York pizza in New York yet, but I’m convinced this probably some of the best pizza you can get in the southwest US. I used to frequent Regents quite a bit when I was a UCSD student. Prices here are more expensive then your regular pizza shop, but I think it’s well worth it. Regents carries both a variety of quality Chicago deep dish and New York Style Pizza.
A slice a pizza runs about $ 3-​$ 4 a slice. One slice a piece is usually enough for a meal for my fiancé and I. I think you get more for your money with a deep dish slice, so I’d go with that if you like Chicago style. We usually go for the meat lovers. The crust here is thin and crispy and the ingredients seem higher quality than other pizza places. The sauce and cheese are very flavorful. They reheat the pizza slices in a brick oven sort of contraption.
We’ve also tried the fried goat cheese salad and the pesto pasta from here. The fried goat cheese salad is pretty good and a small is enough to feed 2 – 3 in my opinion if you are also getting pizza. The pesto pasta is just alright to me. It’s good, but something I could make at home and doesn’t really wow me.
The ambiance here caters to the college student. It’s very loud and busy and clearly filled with tons of UCSD students. I’m glad they moved to a bigger space, so they can handle the large dinner crowd better. There is quite a bit of patio seating as well.
If you are looking for good quality New York or Chicago deep dish pizza, I highly recommend trying Regents. I’m still a fan!

SOLID 3.5 STARS
A bunch of us stopped in for lunch today and had a pretty good lunch. Most of us ordered the 2 slices and fountain drink combo order.
I deducted a star only because the combos and pizzas are a bit overpriced. As I mentioned, I had 2 slices and fountain drink and paid $ 11! Don’t get me wrong, the slices were huge but not worth $ 4+ per slice. I had the meat lovers and white and preferred the meat lovers. Not much taste on the white pizza… sorta just blah.
A friend had one of the sandwiches and he liked that. They also ordered some side salads which were a decent size.
Since we were working, couldn’t have any beers on tap but they had a nice selection. We will be back when we can have some! Haha

All in all, the slices were huge… just overpriced. Meat lovers was by far the best. pepperoni and cheese was a bit greasy. Love that you can choose between thin New York crust or deep dish Chicago style.
Took ½ star off due to nothing in the women’s bathroom was working. Toilet barely flushed, automatic faucet sensors barely functioned and the Dyson drier didn’t work.

I would recommend getting a slice of the Meat Lover’s pizza. If they run out of Hawaiian pizza, they can place ham and pineapples on a cheese pizza for you.
The Walnut Gorgonzola salad is nothing extraordinary for $ 7.
The Meat Lover’s pizza and beers would be the reasons if I were to come back.

Came here for Monday Night Foodball. Parking was free after a certain time I think 7pm. It’s in a little shipping center. They have a good selection of beers and have both Chicago and New York style pizza you can order by slice or whole.
I got the 2 slices and a pint which was a bit pricey. It’s way cheaper at Best Pizza. I got 2 of the new York style pizzas. One being meat lovers and the other, White. Both were pretty good. I also tried their dish pizzas which weren’t as great as Chicago bros. Here in SD. I’ve also been to Chicago and I am in love with deep dish. This place unfortunately did not wow me with their deep dish pizza. The meat lovers had little eat in it. It had so little pepperoni and sausage that were THINLY SLICED. When I went to Chicago and Chicago bros pizza here in San Diego, they gave a generous amount of meat in their pizzas.
My friends and I were pretty disappointed in the food. We’ve definitely had better. I don’t recommend coming here for deep dish if that’s what you’re looking for. Their New York pizzas in the other hand were pretty ok.

I wish I lived a little bit closer to this place. Or maybe I don’t because otherwise I’d gain 5 pounds a week.
This place has stepped up its game in every way since moving into the larger space. It’s got a really cool, laid back, neighborhood vibe.
I don’t know how many beer taps they have but it seemed like enough for every student at UCSD, so that’s a bonus.
I went in last Sunday after hiking Torrey pines and grabbed a couple of slices and a drink. For $ 9 and change I got 2 slices nearly the size of my head. (And soda from fountain) I watched some football on the big screen and just relaxed. I can’t say enough about the pizza. I ordered the soprasatto and it was so effing amaze balls! I’ve been thinking about it every day since.
Do yourself a favor and check this place out. You can thank me later!

Good pizza, wings, beer, service and atmosphere… no wonder this place is the talk of the town.
Been hearing the Regents Pizzeria forever and how it used to be a smaller store way back who knows when. I’ve only been here twice and to much joy… it’s been a pleasure both times.
Order pizza by the slice with what they have available or by the pizza… wings are great too! Good selection of beers and you’ve got yourself a win win scenario here!
They have TVs mounted around too so you’ll be able to catch the current games. Outdoor seating has heaters so comfy throughout. It get’s pretty packed so you may experience a wait.
Parking… booo… only downer here. Parking fees for daytime and small and busy lot. Come here after 7 and I think there’s no attendant so free after that.

Best all around pizza in San Diego.
I’ve been a fan of Regents Pizzeria for many years (Maybe 8?), both for lunches, and having it catered for company parties. They’ve always done a great job with both thin and Chicago Deep Dish versions of pizza pie. I can say they have one of the BEST deep dishes in San Diego. The knock on Regents was always their old waiflike shop that just couldn’t seat the lunchtime capacity. They’ve recently moved to a new larger space, but unfortunately it’s still in the same crappy parking situation. If you walk there, do it!
