Raymond’s Barber Shop

Waited 20 minutes for a shave and when it was my turn I was told that «the guy who does shaves will be back in a month». The list of services and prices clearly has a straight razor shave on it and it should be edited if they aren’t offering the service. I left and got one down the street and will never return to this barber shop.

After going through more than 15 barbers in the 14 years I’ve lived in San Diego, I found my guy with Felipe. I’m not sure why barbershops can’t get the basics down and realize that a clean cut needs a straight razor to clean things up on the edges. I’ve spent 3 times as much at boutique barbershops and never had as good of a cut. Javier (Felipe’s son) also does an amazing job, however he spends most of his time out in Santee now. The price is also about as low as you’ll find in San Diego.

I ambled in here today in a non-​premeditated fashion when outside for a dose of sunlight when I realized that I was quite shaggy.
Javier – the 3^rd generation family owner and barber here – greeted me with a genuine smile. He proceeded to give me a remarkable haircut in an appropriate amount of time. It’s notable that the cut concluded with use of a straight edge razor on the rear and sides. I loved this don’t see this enough anymore!
An even MORE subjective aside…
As someone who is «overly» conscious (edit: anxious) of social dynamics, sometimes haircuts can be uncomfortable situations. Reason? I never know if I’m being uncouth for my level of chat/​small-​talk. Javier’s disposition defused this feeling and I felt at peace during the visit.

Raymond’s Barber Shop is great! It was by chance I saw it and I’ve now been going for two months.
Larry and Felipe provide a welcoming environment.
I only see Larry because he has some serious skills with the a straight razor. He always does a excellent job!

What a great place. Larry gave me a cut and he did a good fade and my first straight razor shave for my sideburns and neck. Definitely coming back in a few weeks for another style.

One descriptor says it all: character — the place is all of this and my barber is one too.
I met this fine gentleman & barber while he was sitting by the door, on a little break, catching some breeze and waiting for a walk-​in like me. His welcome was very nice and so, into the little place I wandered…
To quote my favorite new barber & owner — Felipe: «‘just a hole in the wall place to cut your hair «. And, what a great hole this was to tidy up my head and beard, all in one quick round.
Felipe explained this place has been here 36 years. Dad was the Founder and Felipe has been at it for many, many years. He grew up right around the corner in the local hood. We struck up a great chat and the man got down to biz & can cut and trim just right — straight up and works his trade with total ease. A real nice guy, cheeky and funny too. Good storytelling, a pair of scissors & shears and 20 mins on the chair, all go hand in hand like a few peas in a pod.
It is a tiny place — 2 chairs but has more character than the three other places nearby, all put together (they all said I required an appointment, one week in advance — oh please…). His son has framed all these great pictures of old North Park + many of the generations of barbers in the family.
I love the pics of Pacino — Scarface and the Godfather, as well as Goodfellas — Liotta, Sorvino, De Niro and Pesci. Trust me not Brooklyn nor Bronx guido by any stretch — just low key and cool, blending in with all other framed pics. You also check out «El Peluquero» — a parody of Pacino and Brando — that’s funny.
These guys have my biz from here on in. Whilst it may sound like old-​school– barbershop 101, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that as it is actually by far the BEST haircut I’ve had in SD in the 8+ months we have lived here. And, at a very fair and reasonable price.
I am back in 30 days to do it all over again.

Over the past decade, I’ve tried at least a dozen barbers in San Diego. Everything from Salon Indigo in Hillcrest to one chair barber shops. I settled on Raymond’s about two years ago. Raymond’s is, in a word, authentic. No B.S., just a precise men’s cut at a reasonable cash price. Everything that I want in a barber shop, and nothing that I don’t.

First time here. Low fade, comb-​over with a slight pump at a perfect angle. Javier is now my new Barber. Quete humble, worth it and much, much more.

This place is the best! I’m from Northern California and always make it a point to get my haircut here when I’m down here!!! Great place, great vibe, wish it was closer to home!!!

This place is really small and if you’re not looking, you’ll miss it. My boyfriend came here for a long overdue haircut with a specific kind of hairstyle in mind and the barber delivered! The boyfriend was very happy with how it turned out and will be coming back.

Small, you’ll miss it if your not looking where your going. But one of the coolest spots to get a hair cut. This is a throw back style shop without the hipster. There are only 2 barbers working at a time, but they are both efficient and very good barbers. I give it a 5 star because it’s the perfect spot for me to get a great hair cut. I’ve nothing to be disappointed about here ever.

The people that do your cuts here are great people! They play really good music in here, but honestly if you’re looking to get a quality line up, I promise you that you need to steer away from this barbershop because they will push your line back, it is uneven, and it’s boo where close to great.

Called to get an appointment for my father for a Saturday. Walk ins only and they do NOT do shaves on Saturdays. Gentlemen who answered the phone stated they were too busy!!!

This shop is run by a father and son. Before them the grandfather cut hair. Both men are excellent barbers, not hairstylists. These are real barbers who finish the haircut with a straight razor trim lowering my ears. I have had more complements about my hair after I have it cut by these men than any where else I have been. Going here is like when I would go with my dad to get a hair cut except I no longer sit on the booster seat and get a ball of chewing gum when the hair cut is over.

I have no hair.
Yet I find myself coming here for a haircut.
I own a pair of clippers. And I can do the job myself. But coming to Raymond’s is borderline ritualistic. It’s the people that keep me coming back. The care and attention to detail that the barbers provide.
Although the neighborhood is saturated with barbershops. This is the one to come to.
Fast. Cheap. Easy. And out of control.
I don’t think I’m ever going to find a place like this ever again.

I was in San Diego for 3 months and struggled to find a good place for an affordable cut. The places in walking distance of Hillcrest were overpriced and poorly rated. I took the short drive to Raymond’s and gave it a shot.
I made it there twice. On both occasions the wait was only a few minutes. Both cuts were by the father. Both of the gentleman engaged me in conversation and made me feel welcome. The cut was great. Time was taken to make sure I was satisfied. The cut was finished with a hot lather back-​of-​the-​neck shave. I left feeling clean and looking sharp.
There is street parking all around the location, I never had a problem finding a spot. The shop is small, no frills, so don’t go expecting more than a place to get a hair cut. Cost was $ 15 for a basic cut, compared to $ 24 – 40 in Hillcrest.
I love this shop and these guys. Next time I’m in San Diego I know where to go for a great cut at a good price.

AMAZING! My son is only 15 months old and I asked for the fagther to give him a mowhawk, but to fade into it so it looked a little bit softer than the traditional mowhawk. He said he would do his best and in about 10 minutes my little guy had the greatest haircut. This was a difficult hair cut since we came here because our family barber back in Santa Maria had a health emergancy and was hospitalized. I told the father and his son about my barber and what had happenned, they took down his information and said they were going to reach out to him and offer him encouragement. They are amazing professionals with amazing hearts. Once we are finished with our military transfer to San Diego we will be regular customers and plan on telling ALL of our friends about this amazing business. If your little boy needs a good haircut this place in a MUST DO!
Father was the older barber and his son was the younger barber, its a well run family business.

This is now my go to spot. I used to go to salons but there is something about the classic barber shop experience. It is honestly such a pleasure to come here and get my haircut. Who knows a man’s head better than a trained barber.
Javier is a pleasure to work with and consistently gives me a perfect haircut.
He takes appointments now after 6pm or so on weekdays so you can avoid the wait!
