Tiger and his team at Mission Hills Nursery do a fantastic job keeping our HOA’s landscaping looking great. He and his team have a can do attitude and go above and beyond to take care of us. Highly recommended!

Excellent selection and service. I came by to get a birthday gift for my sister and found the perfect plant (it was a coral-​like succulent). I wanted a different, more aesthetic pot to transfer the plant to and they had a good selection for that too. They were so kind as to transplant it for me. I’ll definitely come back here for future plant-​related gifts and other gardening necessities. If you stop by, say hello to their free-​roaming chickens for me!

This nursery is the best nursery I’ve been to.
They have a wide variety of plant selections, especially succulents, great landscaping, neat, orderly yet creative, staff are welcoming and pleasant, and the owner is such a good character. His knowledge and passion of plants makes you feel good he truly cares for them and takes the time to educate and discuss with you.
It was peaceful browsing and cute seeing the 3 chickens and sleeping cat throughout the nursery.
Hands down, a great place.

Spent the whole time here with Andrew. He’s so knowledgeable and is willing to spend his time walking around and sharing his knowledge. He explained so much to me about a ton of plants and giving me tips. He wasn’t pushy and when I wanted to go off on my own, that wasn’t a problem. Though they didn’t have the particular kind of pots I wanted, the selection was reasonably priced. Great experience. Would totally go back, if just to pick Andrew’s brains.

This is a really good garden center in the heart of a trendy neighborhood. Service is good and plant selection is wide. I found this on a garden center crawl and enjoyed browsing among the cacti and house plants.
There is street parking.
Staff are friendly and knowledgeable.

We came in and had some questions about plants. I asked the female manager whom appeared late 50’s, if I could ask her some questions. She rudely said she would in a minute, but only after she gave me the evil reptilian eye from head to toe. I have never seen so much hatred in a stranger before whom I was going to give my money. The person I was with noticed the same thing and felt uncomfortable. She came back and rather than help us, pushed us off to a very nice Hispanic woman working in the garden. I feel so sorry that she has to work for that woman! I ended up buying 4 plants, two of which died 2 days later (!!!). I felt so uncomfortable buying the plants from Darth Vader’s daughter. Do people forget when they manage a place that the first rule is to not be hateful towards their customers?

A great collection of plants and herbs. My friend and I came here with a succulent landscaping project in mind and was pleased to find they have a variety of succulents ranging from $ 2-​$ 8. The only downside is they don’t have a nice collection of pots, had to go to Ace hardware to find that. Employees are very attentive and helpful with green thumb questions.

I will not shop at or work with the landscaping group at Mission Hills nursery.
I was looking for some landscaping work to be done and filled out their online form requesting information about the project. I received a call within a couple of hours. The person with whom I spoke and I set a tentative time for us to meet at my home that he was supposed to confirm with me afterwards. The time came and went without a confirmation. I reached out again to set up another time and we set up a time that I took off of work and he didn’t show up.

They are San Diego’s oldest nursery, A fantastic selection of flowers, a good place to look for natives, knowledgeable staff and truly dedicated owners. A great family operation. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice, this is the place to get it. Sometimes wish they had more choices of vegetable plants.

Located just off the West Lewis Shopping District at Fort Stockton and Palmetto, this is a garden lovers paradise ! Really cute local nursery. I felt like they had a much better selection than Home Depot/​Lowes and the plants all looked beautiful. I stopped by to get something to help my little organic garden since my kale has been plagued by aphids. I asked a worker if they would suggest a spray soap or live ladybugs (both the same price), and he strongly suggested the spray. The spray worked wonderfully and my kale is growing strong!

We live within walking distance of MH Nursery, so it’s very convenient. The nursery is like a little wonderland and the staff is helpful. Also, my frenchie Doug is just fascinated by the chickens. Can’t wait for our next trip to the nursery!

–very large nursery and they cram a lot of stuff in there… its quite overwhelming!
–there were tons of plants i’ve never even heard of or haven’t been able to find, as well as other generic/​widely available plants
–huge selection of terrarium supplies, including terrariums containers, decorations and mini air plants and mini succulents… much better selection and variety than any other place i’ve been to plus lower prices
–in fact, most products are very well priced, especially considering its an independent business. pleasant surprise, especially for the more unique products
–good selection of California native plants
–the plants are in great shape and nice quality
–i came in looking for tomato plants and boy did they have ‘em… there is a ton of varieties, the best price i’ve found ($ 3!) so far and they were mostly unique heirlooms i’ve never even heard of!
–the guy helping me (Andrew, I believe) was super nice and showed me around even giving me gardening tips, helping me choose a plant by showing me what to look for in a good one. he didn’t know all of the varieties, but was honest with me about that point. my only criticism is that he kept trying to convince me to buy the plants he knew and had experience with, although he probably did that to make sure I would get a variety that he was confident met my needs/​was successful
–the main drawback was the lack of signage… while the place is well laid out according to type of plants, there was no sign indicating what the «categories were». so without help being a first-​timer would cause you to wander around the whole place (which is a series of several «areas» both indoors and out) until you find what you are looking for. you also had to read about each plant individually to see its specifications rather than them being organized by «low sun, full sun» etc and most of the tomatoes did not have anything on it than a name so you didn’t know if you were getting a cherry, a huge plant, if it was suitable for containers etc. maybe this place is geared towards more experienced gardeners or repeat customers? but, like I said it was easy to find good help and i’m sure i’ll figure it out next time when i have more time to spend looking around and getting to know the place. increase the signage and this place would be 4.5 stars!!!

I love this place. When I first moved to San Diego, my parents came to visit from back East and my mother insisted on getting a big houseplant for the apartment. Home Depot didn’t seem like the right setting for a fun mother/​daughter outing, and I stumbled across the reviews for Mission Hills Nursery. Since then I’ve been back countless times (and the massive philodendron with a beautiful pot is still going strong in the corner of the kitchen). I’ve primarily bought herbs here — the majority of which have been gangbusters under the right conditions — but a pack of morning glory seeds yeilded beautiful results, and the broccoli we bought recently is just about ready for stir-​frying! The staff are always helpful and friendly, and the prices are good. I love just browsing here on a sunny day — it always reminds me of Mom.

This place is amazing! The staff is so helpful! We bought 2 trees! They were patient and helped us pick them out. Seriously, a very merry experience.
Not to mention, the product is on point!

Nice little nursery, decent selection, more than adequate parking on Friday mornings.
My grandpa and I came to stroll and peruse the selection. We arrived around 9:30 am on a Friday morning and parked right in front. Starting on the west side, we looked at some flowers and as we were making our way back towards the bamboo, a black and white cat came and basically begged me to pick it up, scratch behind its ears, and proceed to carry it around the entire nursery with me – which I did. He/​she/​it purred and drooled and thoroughly enjoyed the smothering of love.
I really just took my grandpa to look at the plants. This review is mostly to say that I really like the cat.
No employees ever greeted us or asked if we needed help finding anything — even after we made our way inside where the bulbs and stuff are. That’s the reason for the rating — I’m sure someone would’ve helped us if we had asked.

When you think about it, San Diego and I have had a very lengthy relationship. I’ve been coming here, both for work and for personal reasons, since early 90s. But it was 2002 that changed my impression. It was for a very special occasion. I came here and found some very rare plants including pink Angel’s Trumpet and pink plumeria, which were hard to find at the time in the bay area.
Fast forward 12 years, I returned only to encounter a Hawaiian Chinese staffer who knew everything I knew and more. He knew why I was looking for those rare magnolias, jasmines and plumeria plants. He knew how hard it was to find those guys. Communicated in English, Cantonese and Mandarin, he led me quickly to the plants that I had been looking for for over a decade. It was a piece of homeland memories.
Magnolia produced small white petals that smelled like banana, jasmine flowers that could be used for tea, and plumeria reminded me of my winter residence in Southern China near Macau. There was a multi colored honeysuckle vine, which was also difficult to find, I politely declined to purchase it, because I already have one planted in my French house and it looked better than anything I could ever grow in the bay area.
I left the nursery with two of the last rare magnolia, two white jasmine (no, they are not the typical American jasmine bush, these were bona fide Chinese jasmine that produced intoxicatingly sweet white round flowers), and one plumeria.
In 2002 I bought a plumeria from here and brought it back to my Berkeley Hill house, the first single family home that I ever owned, and it grew very well until a deep frost that killed it. The frost also killed the Buddha’s Hand citrus plant. I was devastated for months.
Mission Hills Nursery has always been my favorite nursery in this country. One of my good friends worked briefly in a San Diego’s nursery and we often discussed the rare plants that seemed to be commonly found in San Diego but never seem to be available in the bay area. I am constantly amazed by how big of a contrast there is.
I was here this time to buy for the house I got for my father in the east bay. I called him just before leaving the nursery to tell him the good news.
«I have THE magnolia and jasmine you’ve been looking for.» I could tell that he was excited.
His mother, my beloved grandma, now passed away, used to love her jasmine, she grew them like nobody’s business. Now we finally have something to remember her by.

This neighborhood nursery is quite nice. I stopped in looking for some good potting soil for some trees and plants I needed to re-​pot to larger pots. They had several types, mostly the eco variety. (
) I decided on a brand I have never seen nor heard of: a made from all natural and organic ecoscraps. I read the ingredients what I liked the best about it, was that there was no poop in it (
).
I picked up some kale while I was there to grow in a large wooden container. (
) I never grown it, but the lady who helped me out gave me some good advice on how to take care of it, which leads me to the service.
They employees here are great. They are very knowledgeable about naïve plants and drought tolerant specimens. They also care a variety of fruit trees and a number of hard to find varieties as well.
