Midway Optometry

I’m in town for a short time and needed an exam and some sight correction to get me through required training. I found them using the FEPBLUE Vision website. They are «In Network» if you are a federal employee and have vision insurance. This is a significant discount.

Made an appointment today to have my eyes examined and get a new pair of glasses. Found out that the business is under new ownership and was happy with the customer service I received. I was able to get a same day appointment which made it easy for me since I am always on the go! I had my exam, talked with the doctor about my vision (Dr. Matthews is very informative) Also picked out a new pair of glasses and will continue to do business with Dr. Matthews. Very professional and friendly atmosphere and happy to do business with them! Highly recommended.

I would like to start off by thanking Dr Matthews and his staff! He was kind enough to see me as a walk in and examine my injured eye right away not only was he professional and caring he took time to explain what was going on and even searched to see which pharmacy had the RX at what price! This is the type of Dr that truly cares about his patients well being. Therefor five stars from me!

Dr. Matthews was phenomenal! If you are looking for an optometrist who will take the time to thoroughly explain the tests and reasons for why he recommends certain treatments, then you definitely need to give Midway Optometry a try. When I told him I was a medical student, he went a step further and explained the Snellen Chart to me. The cherry on top, was when I learned that he spoke Spanish! He shared his experience in Guatemala with me, and his heart of gold definitely shined through! I wholeheartedly recommend Midway Optometry to friends, family and all San Diegan’s!

I was in severe pain and am new to the area. I called Dr. Matthews office and was able to schedule an appointment within two hours. He saw me promptly and immediately diagnosed the problem. We ended up having a pleasant conversation after he treated my eye. Great experience.

My mom needed to have an eye exam and her Optometrist had retired. I needed to get an exam too, as it had been 3 years since my last one. I told her she should come see mine, as Dr. Prince was always fantastic with me! Sadly, I had heard she sold the practice after a family emergency.
However, I made the appointments with the new Doc and WOW! Dr. Matthews was SOOOOO nice! He did a VERY thorough and HONEST eye exam on both me and my Mom. I would highly recommend coming to see Dr. Matthews! He knows his craft well and he’s definitely a people person which goes a LONG way in the service industry.
Prices are very reasonable and the glasses selections are from classic to modern and hip! Check them out, seriously!

I had a great experience at Midway Optometry! Dr. Matthews was very thorough with his exam and spent a lot of time explaining my eye health and the different aspects of my vision. The front office staff was great from explaining my insurance benefits and picking out the perfect frames to fit my needs at work. They also have a great selection of frames to pick from. I will definitely be bringing the family in with my new optometrist!

I am finally In good hands with a competent Eye Doctor. I was visiting San Diego and lost my contact lens. I have been having vision problems for awhile. Dr Matthews was the most though Eye Dr. He is even better than my medical ophthalmologist.
He not only diagnosed an eye infection in my lids but fitted me with the best contact lens I have had in years.
I visit SAn Diego three times a year for work and will take my wife and kids there for exams and glasses. Thank you Dr Matthews. I see Dr Matthews you have just replaced DrPrince. I was blessed you were able to assist me late on a Friday afternoon.

Was in San Diego and had a problem with my glasses. Found this place by chance and glad I did. Was so impressed with the help I got I went back the next day and got the best eye exam I ever had. Dr. Matthews experience and knowledge were really helpful to get glasses that dealt with my astigmatism. He was so good I will travel back to San Diego just to get my eyes checked.

I’ve been meaning to write a review for here for awhile and keep forgetting haha! So, I just want to say that is one of the MOST military friendly optometrists I e ever visited. After years of seeing the same eye doctor in Oceanside, he retired and I had to search for a new one. Based on the recommendation of a friend I decided to give this office a try and I wasn’t disappointed! I was also able to get to see what the doctor was seeing in my eye, which I’m a nerd over that stuff haha, and found out that my eye health was much better than I feared after not seeing an eye doctor in a couple years. I got gorgeous glasses at an awesome price and can’t wait to return for my yearly exam! :)

This is the very first time I have ever written a review but I feel compelled to do so since my experience was such a poor one at Midway Optometry. I went for an annual visit to update my prescription on my contact lens and asked for the same monovision lens that I have worn for the past 12 years. When I picked up my lens, Dr. Prince said that she and the lab technician decided I would be happier with multifocal lens. I didn’t think the change was a big deal but as I was leaving the office, they told me I owed a hefty sum which was three times more than the monovision lens. They were about to close and were hurried so I just gave my credit card thinking that my insurance company could correct the overpayment and reimburse me. Then as I was driving home, I remembered that my last Optometrist in Chicago had given me the option to purchase the multifocal lens but divulged the added cost and even recommended that I not go that route due to the added cost. Now I was mad — I called to speak with Dr. Prince the next day but she would not accept my call and I had to speak with the Office Manager. I explained the situation and asked to exchange the lens for the ones I originally wanted and thought were ordered. She said she would speak with Dr. Prince and call me back. I did not receive a call back and followed up the next day and I was told that there was nothing they could do about my situation and even said that there was only a $ 20 difference. I proceeded to call my insurance company and they too tried to persuade the Dr. to correct the situation but were unsuccessful. Midway Optometry lied and told my insurance company that they had indeed told me about the added cost and had thoroughly explained everything to me prior to ordering the lens. I truly cannot believe that I have had to spend so much time in trying to resolve this incident and feel so misled. If you decide to go to this clinic, I advise you to get everything in writing on the first visit as even my co pay was incorrectly billed. Dr. Prince appears to be a young Doctor and I question how she will grow her business when she clearly is not above board with her patients.

First, I would caution anyone wanting to come to this office for their vision care to click on the link for the reviews that the Unilocal software did not show as helpful. They are very helpful and show a truer picture than the glowing 5 stars shown at first.
My experience. I first went to see them when they were on Midway drive. I needed new glasses as well as bifocals for the first time. That first set of glasses were worth 5 stars. I could not have been happier.
When I returned for new lenses a year or so later, they were in the top story of the Bookstar location. I was charged a hefty sum for the exam, frames and lenses but I did not get what I paid for. When I picked that set of glasses up, they didn’t seem right, but I was told to try they out over the weekend and see if I adjusted to them. Needless to say I did not. When I finally made it back in, I asked them about the numbers on the lenses. Shouldn’t they line up? They told me they should. However they didn’t. The staff agreed that the lenses were wrong, blamed it on the lab and sent them back out for new lenses. Someone should have checked that before giving me the new glasses. In any case, I did eventually receive new glasses, but I still wasn’t 100% happy.
When the frames broke, I went back in for a new set of frames and lenses. I explained my dissatisfaction with the previous set of glasses and they agreed to give me a discount on the new ones. That seemed fair.
When I picked up the new pair of glasses, they didn’t seem correct again. I needed to see so I once again took them to see if it was just me. It wasn’t. I went back in and the staff re-​measured my lenses and agreed they were wrong;. They would re-​order new ones and I could swap out the lenses when they came in. After waiting, calling waiting, calling I finally asked them to call the lab and find out where my lenses were. The lab had not even started to make them because they were waiting on the frames. The order was just for the lenses. If I hadn’t insisted that they call I might never have received new lenses at all.
When the new lenses came in, I went in to have them put in the frames.
They were much better than the previous set of lenses, but still weren’t quite right. I couldn’t see properly without moving the frames down on my nose. That’s not what I paid for. I paid for a set of glasses that I could actually use.
This week I finally went back in one more time and was told I could come in a few days later to see Dr. Prince. I wanted her to test my vision with the glasses on. The office called and told me I would not be seeing Dr. Prince, but that a different person would help me. Not acceptable. I asked for a phone call from Deborah Prince and have not yet received a call back. I don’t expect to. They took my money, billed my insurance and left me on my own.
I did go into the office to get copies of my prescriptions. Optometrists are required to give you a copy of your prescription, but they never did. I was able to get the info and I can clearly see an error. The axis of my left eye went from 180 to 001. Really? A decrease of 179? The axis of my right eye went from 167 to 172, an increase of 5. No wonder my glasses continue to be messed up. Needless to say, my next rant will be a complaint to the state board.
It’s very sad since that first set of glasses were awesome. Oh Well.

I have been going to Dr. Prince for a few years. She is very frinedly and attentive. Her new staff is an improvement over her past staff. Beware that it did take me over a month to get one box of disposable contacts tho that may have been due to their supplier? Overall, this is a nice neighborhood optomterist that I trust.

Dr. Prince and her staff are awesome. She examined my daughter and me the same day, and just really took time out to talk with us and educate. Her staff is super-​friendly, and I completely trusted them with my prescription sunglass choices (which I rarely do). They are also very military-​friendly. Thank you Midway Optometry, Dr. Prince. You are our new, favorite family optometrist.

My first experience with Midway Optometry was to purchase glasses and contacts only. I had my eyes examined by another Doctor and for insurance purposes was led to Dr. Prince’s practice. When the time came for me to have my eyes examined for contact lenses, I chose Dr. Prince because I wasn’t very pleased with my previous eye care provider. Dr. Prince’s staff was very warm and welcoming and I wasn’t as nervous as I usually am. Meeting Dr. Prince was actually a joy… she asked my concerns and addressed the issues and other topics that were age related. She was VERY professional, caring and really helped me find the right contact lens for my issues. I was impressed with her concern and eagerness to help me. I would HIGHLY recommend her to my friends and my husband will be changing over to her as well. Thank you Dr. Prince and staff for making this such an enjoyable experience.

Unfortunately, I don’t like to give service professionals poor ratings, however, the results of my visit prompt me to address it. First off, Dr. Prince is a seemingly nice woman, but nice doesn’t cut it when someone’s vision is involved. My first issue was calling to inquire about her practice. She called my insurance company and Immediately confirmed my visit with her (meaning she put in a claim right after speaking with me over the phone, no visit yet). Second issue, her equipment seems a bit dated. But if it could do the job, then I wouldn’t have a problem but I have a pretty strong astigmatism. She was unable to prescribe proper contact lenses or glass lenses. My right eye prescription is so shotty, the blur Is ridiculous. Plus no follow up call from her office. SMH… Can’t recommend her and wont return. Luckily, my optometrist in NJ gave me a prescription from a year ago.

I’ve been going to see Dr. Deborah Prince for a few years now and she is a very friendly and helpful eye doctor. She patiently answers your questions and gives very good advice. I went to see her to determine if I can get Lasik. As someone who got it done herself, she was very helpful in describing the procedure and recommending eye surgeons. The location is great if you live or work in the Point Loma area, as it’s right above the bookstore on Rosecrans st. It’s no longer on Midway drive, as Unilocal has it.
The only bad thing I could say is that the staff can be a little slow to schedule. But this gets made up by actually being able to be seen by the doctor at your appointment time. I’ve never had to wait longer than 5 minutes.

Dr. Prince is an excellent optometrist and very professional. She has a very soothing voice and was the first optometrist to not prescribe me glasses that gave me a headache when I first started to wear them. She actually listened to me and gave me glasses that made me see the clearest I’ve ever seen my whole life. Very excellent optometrist with great people skills. Highly recommended.
The location is a little hard to find as it is literally on top of a book store and you get in by entering the book store and then taking the stairs up.
