Kafe Sobaka Restoran Pomegranate

Really crazy interior design and decorations everywhere. It’s a fun place to be! We ordered the salad sampler and a chef special — it was a ton of food. The salad sampler alone was enough for two people. I especially liked the walnut stuffed eggplant, but I’m a huge fan of garlic so be warned!

I love this place, honestly. I came here for my anniversary, and the service is excellent. The staff is attentive, but also not overly so. The ambiance is great, and the food is wonderful. Also, if you are a wine person, I would recommend that you try the merlot, because it is one of the best wines I’ve tasted in my life.
If you’re vegan/​vegetarian and also a local, this is your kind of place. This location has more than a fair share of vegan/​vegetarian food choices. I’ve been here twice, and both times I’ve ordered the vegan version of the appetizer sampler which is just amazing.
Make sure to leave room for dessert, though, because the desserts are amazing. The Napoleon pastry (not vegan but vegetarian) is sweet and tart and good to share with one or two more people.

One of the most fun and delicious hole in the wall spots in San Diego! The food is always incredible, the wait staff is awesome and always has the best recommendations, the atmosphere is just fantastic. I’ve come here for dinner, coffees and dessert, just drinks, every time it’s been great. My favorite place to bring people from out of town!

I’m drinking possibly the best Moscow Mule I’ve ever had. And the dish I just ate, «Vegetarian’s answer to Shashlik,» was so amazing I may start weeping.

On our 2^nd anniversary celebration, we went to Kafe Sobaka Restoran Pomegranate. The ambience was Georgian and so well maintained. The staff was so co-​operative to help us select various dishes. We ordered Zakuski sampler platter as appetizer, Kharcho soup and Khachapuri. It was too delicious. The sampler was cold as I don’t prefer cold foods but anyway was delicious and healthy. We ordered Shashlik in the main course along with wine and diluted vodka. We were unfortunate at the time of dessert as they were out of turkish coffee and Pomegranate vodka sorbet so we ordered pistachio and walnut-​fig ice-​cream as they have very good option in one ice cream, we can order 2 different flavours scoop in one ice cream.
Overall, pleasant experience and will revisit with friends.

What an amazing restaurant. We came for a new experience and it was better than we could have expected. The food is amazing; Georgian, Russian, and Albanian cuisine. Definitely try the flavored vodkas (buy 2 and they give you 1 on the house). Also the owner is a gem. I’ve never been to a place where the proprietor greets you, tells you a joke, and gives you an honest assessment of what he thinks you’ll like. He’s not there to up-​sell you, he’s there to share his culture with you. Also, come hungry. The portions are immense!

I love this place with all my heart, the inside is decorated soo cozy and tastefully, the owner takes pride in showing love of Georgian culture through the delicious food served here. I’ve been here numerous times and feel so lucky to be there every time.

Food: Started with a large Zakuski platter– see pics. I split this with a friend and it was still huge. 4 people could have shared it. We were at a table of 30+. They reserved the entire back room for us! Everyone ordered their own and were so full, they didn’t do more than sample the platter. Next time I may be more selective and just order 2 apps. The best items on the platter were the 2 with eggplant. The cabbage was good, the potato salad — bland. I also ordered the khinkali dumplings with lamb. They were quite large, at least 3 bites each, but were a bit doughy and not as full of meat as they looked or as I expected. There were definitely air pockets. Overall, it was a fun atmosphere and filling food but if I come back I would rather try one of the stews. For what I ate– apps only, it felt a little pricey too. I paid $ 30 for half the platter and my dumplings.
Service: The waitress was charming and handled the huge party essentially solo! she remembered everyone’s names and dishes. However… She completely forgot my vodka?! I didn’t remind her because she was running around so much, but hopefully the next time I come, I’ll get to try the Pomegranate Vodka.

Kafe Sobaka is very nice place. I felt right at home. Interesting design, russian music, great food and friendly services. I really liked how they served water! I recommend!

If this is what Russian food is supposed to be then I need to find a way to make it to Russia… pronto! This was honestly one of the best meals I’ve ever had.
This restaurant is cozy and quaint with Russian décor in every direction. The Russian culture waits for all parties to be seated before ordering so make sure everyone is there. Our waitress was also Russian with a cute accent. She was very sweet and thoroughly explained the menu.
You honestly cannot go wrong with anything you order. I came with a party of 6 and each one of us thoroughly enjoyed our entrée.
Turkish coffee — this is amazing
Zakuski sampler platter — so much flavor. Definitely recommend.
Pelmeni Siberian Meat Dumplings — delicious
Kuchmachi — This was such a comforting stew on a cold day. I was so happy it came with so many pieces of chicken liver!
Broscht — friend enjoyed this dish
We ordered a flight of vodka with different flavors. Honestly, I could not tell which one was which but hey. it still did the trick.
And don’t forget to enjoy a traditional Russian beer with your meal.
I cannot wait to go back!

This is my idea of comfort food!
I’ve been to Kafe Sobaka twice now — the first was brunch, I had Pirozhkis which were incredible. I was so full by the end from all the bread, but so happy.
Last night I went for dinner and got the Adjarian. Yum yum yum.
My boyfriend loves their food too. The service is great, they’re so nice.
Seems super authentic! One of my favorites. The prices aren’t that bad either!

My parents are from Russia and I grew up eating Russian food. This place is really really delicious and authentic (yum!), but I like that they have a vegetarian option too bc my husband doesn’t eat meat. Also I’ve never been to a Russian restaurant in America that decorates and upholds the restaurant with the old school Russian décor. preparation and serving of dishes is even in an old school Russian way! It’s super interesting I felt like I stepped back in time! Def want to come back! !

Service and food were both great. I actually got a vegetarian soup that was so good and satisfying, I’m no vegetarian so that’s saying something. I really enjoyed the décor and the comfortable atmosphere too. I also tried the Turkish coffee, it was my first time trying it and I found it delicious. I would go back again.

Great atmosphere, personal touch, awesome hospitality, unbelievably tasty food :) only great memories :)

After the Star Wars movie (quick review in a bit), we wanted to go somewhere we hadn’t been before. So we chose Kafe Sobaka Restoran Pomegranate (
) on Broadway in Golden Hill. It is generally a Georgian based restaurant. They are surprisingly pretty vegan and gluten free friendly. Lots of real meat for you meat eaters so don’t worry). We ordered Borscht, a potato mushroom onion sautéed dish served in the skillet, vegan chicken and onions in a walnut cilantro sauce with gluten free bread, and mushrooms in an herb infused plum wine sauce. Unusual flavors I had not had before. Would we eat here again? Absolutely.

Come! Everything is excellent, the atmosphere is cozy (a rarity in San Diego) and the staff warm. There is dark comedy on the menu and you can watch dumplings being made in the window. The poppyseed pastries should not be missed and if you are in the mood for a Russian film, just ask!

So great! Amazing happy hour «tapas» things for $ 3 each, and probably the best borscht I’ve ever had. Not that I’m a borscht expert… I’ve only flown on Russian airlines and been to the airports, never ventured out into any city in Russia. The use of dill reminds me of Denmark… maybe this is Baltic Russian like St. Petersburg or something because the dishes are different from what I’ve seen. In my uneducated opinion, this place is awesome.

Russian food, who would have thought? I have never been so happy to see dill and sour cream in almost every dish I ordered.
My first time having Russian food, and I can say it was great, maybe because I have no comparison. :)
Came for happy hour and got anything that had meat or cheese in it, not disappointed with my choices.
I just have to say that the pomegranate infused vodka was so so… spot on. I have found myself going to Kafe Sobaka being mainly excited for this vodka, must get.

A birthday brunch request brought me here and I’m so happy it did! Off the beaten path but well worth it. The décor is toungue-​in-​cheek communist chic, but the presentation is hardly shabby. The service is leisurely, but with good conversation it was only a minor weakness. I got the Georgian Huevos which was a combo of barley, root veggies and topped with perfectly cooked sunny-​side-​up eggs. They included some «georgian ketchup» which wasn’t much on its own, but mixed in with everything was deelish. Highly recommend!

Came here for Happy Hour w/​my man & had a delightful experience trying the various tapas… We got the two soups, the eggplant roll, the beef/​pork dumplings, potato mushroom dumplings, and a small Russian meat pie. The staff was lovely– a waitress who spoke both Russian & Hebrew and I got to try out phrases with her in both languages.
Everything was perfectly sized to taste. I loved the beef/​pork dumplings, & my boyfriend really liked the eggplant roll though I was not a fan of the walnut cilantro paste. I had been to Pomegranate before over off El Cajon Blvd so was excited to try another Russian adventure.
I would definitely come back here again & try other dishes, while my boyfriend is now wanting to try Pomegranate :)

A delicate jump into a European inspired restaurant that brings delightful tastes and flavors into your palette.
I stumbled upon this location for lunch and was intrigued by the vast array of Russian options that included many vegetarian and soupy dishes. I ordered a pirozhki during my visit and it was one of the most delicious and freshly baked meat-​filled pastries I ever consumed. I was, however, turned off by the high prices of every dish, but you do get what you pay for.
As for parking, it was a breeze since you can park in a nearby lot. The atmosphere has you traveling to a legitimate location reminiscent of an authentic European restaurant. We sat outdoor seating, which was a little cramped, but there are many seating options as this is a fairly large venue. For a place that’s highly rated, I thought it was odd that we were the only customers during lunch time on a weekday.
Overall, I’d recommend trying this place every time your wallet can afford to.

I’ve always wanted to try this place and experience a little of Russian food. My friend and I were very pleased! Everything was delicious! We started off with the Sakhalin Sampler Platter and YUMMY! We also had a large Vareniki and requested half potato-​mushroom and the other half potato-​cheese… Also delicious!!!
I highly do recommend the homemade ice cream! Nutella and Mexican chocolate, oh my!
After reading some of the negative reviews, I think some people are just plan stupid or too damn picky. Who would want American beer at a Russian restaurant? Come on now! And the place isn’t dirty, not at all. It’s called rustic, not dirt. Whomever is interested trying this place out, I suggest ignoring the negative reviews and focus with the positives.
We are definitely going back for more!

I’ve been talking about trying this place for awhile now, but I kept Stalin!
I finally tried it and at first I was a little skeptical because I stood at the host stand for a couple minutes without seeing anyone working, but once the hostess emerged from the kitchen all was well.
We we’re seated near the window, and surrounded by Russian memorabilia. There were two other groups in the restaurant and the noise level was low. We were served water in a refurbished handle of Smirnoff, which I thought was funny. There were lots of little jokes around the restaurant like that, playing off the russian theme. Our Waitress/​Hostess was awesome and definitely made up for the bad first impression, she recommended a great Russian Lager.
Following the beer, we ordered food and lots of it. I had never had Russian Cuisine so I wanted to get the full experience. We began with the Borscht w/​meat, a traditional Russian Beet soup served with sour cream. Amazing, probably the best thing we had. We followed that with the Zharennaya Tsvetnaya Kapusta (fried cauliflower) served with sour cream and siracha and Pelmeni Siberian Meat Dumplings also served with… you guessed it, sour cream.
After all these apps we were pretty full but had also ordered the Beef Stroganov and the Kotleti. The beef strogonov was my least favorite, probably because it was not the american version. The Kotleti was great though, it was a patty made from beef, chicken, and turkey with marinated Russian vegetables pan-​fried served with mashed potatoes and a sour cream sauce. I would definitely return to this place and save room for dessert and the infused vodkas!

Happy hour is on point… and we ate so much food for a great price! Where to begin…
the infused vodka… we tried the pomegranate, lemon, and rose flavors, which I liked in that order! And during happy hour your vodka comes with pickles! So #delish!
Really, everything we ordered tasted good… from the dumplings to the soup! I’ll post pictures of all the food we ordered, but really, don’t just go off of what we ordered… order what you like… I’m sure you will love it!
The menu is entertaining to read… so be sure to hold onto a copy while you wait for your food!
The only menu item that we ordered that was not on the happy hour menu was the honey cake… which is probably the 2^nd best honey cake I have had in my lifetime… the first being in Orlando, FL… so, for San Diego, this might be the #1!

The waitress was very efficient and professional, but not super warm. Still, in a way it almost added to the atmosphere. Truly Georgian.
The water faucets in the bathroom are my worst peeve. But at least they had paper towels.
The bathroom decorations were in poor taste.
But again, the food was good. They charge two dollars every time they bring you more bread and the bread isn’t great. My daughter tried to order gluten free bread and they never brought it until about the end of the meal.
*after I wrote this review my husband informed me that they charged us a 20% gratuity and the waitress (who seemed to be working alone) also tacked another 15 dollars on top of that for a math error that apparently she was not nice about. I guess we won’t go back after all. But that is ok because there are other awesome options.

Kafe Sobaka just broke into my list of favorite restaurants in San Diego. The food is home cooked, but not for lack of flavor. Everything we had was delicious, flavorful, and fresh. Partway through the meal my friend I both commented on how we had the warm and happy food feeling.
To start, we ordered the potato cheese vareniki, which were topped with dill, parsley, carmelized onions, and sour cream. We had to restrain ourselves from not devouring the size-​able portion to save room for our other items!
Next came the pirozhki pies. Thank you ‘Orange is the New Black’ for sparking my interest to try these! We had one mushroom and one potato pie. The pastry was flaky and light. The potato was so well seasoned. The mushrooms were perfectly cooked. My friend doesn’t even like mushrooms, but she was obsessed with how delicious these were in the pastry. I obviously shared her same enthusiasm. The two pies came with potato salad, which was one of the best potato salads I’ve ever eaten. The dill made it so fresh and light.
Our main entrée was the chanakhi, which was the lamb stew. The lamb was incredibly tender and fell apart perfectly in my mouth. The stew had tons of vegetables — eggplant, carrots, green beans, potatoes, onions, red peppers — all of which were so delicious in the stew broth. We soaked up the broth with our remaining vareniki.
For dessert we enjoyed the honey pie, which was a nice finish — sweet, but not too sweet.
I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and cannot wait to try more amazing dishes. Seriously, one of my new favorite restaurants.
