We also provide as the official ticket office for the world famous The Soda Bar. All tickets at face value. No fees!

The Gym Standard philosophy is simple;

1) Carry beautiful, practical objects from brands and makers near and far.

2) Promote San Diego’s creative community of artists, designers and entrepreneurs. This means holding monthly events including but not limited to art shows, poetry readings, flea markets and live music.

3) Have fun and eat burritos.

Studied advertising in Portland under the tutelage of Jim Riswold, the guy who wrote all of your favorite Nike spots starring Spike Lee and Michael Jordan. Spent time as a Product Line Manager with Vans Shoes (HQ), the best footwear company to ever rise out of the California sun. Ultimately, I just wanna sell you shoes that I think you’ll dig and give back to the community.

I’ve popped in here three times now and finally bought something. Every single time Edwin’s service has been exceptional. I don’t even think of it as service at this point I think of GS as just his aura running the shop. Super refreshing as far as boutiques go that is for sure!

Gym Standard is a little like Blends 2.0 with a more hipster feel than street. It really reminds me of stores on La Brea in LA. A great selection of men’s footwear like Converse and PF Flyers, plus some magazines, home décor and miscellaneous items. I’m sure we’ll be going back there again soon to shop for the hubby’s kicks. Parking is a little challenging, but there are usually a few metered spots. We definitely need more stores like this on The Boulevard!

Read about the store from a reddit thread and checked them out on Unilocal.I stopped by the ACD Gallery and the owner Keith suggested I stop by his friend Edwin’s shop, Gym Standard since it was down the street. The shop is very cool. I digged the vibe and layout as I entered the store. Edwin greeted me and asked me where I was from. His dad also stopped by and helped me out getting a shirt. I’d come back if I’m ever back in SD.

Usually come to this store to buy Soda Bar tickets. I recently bought shoes here. Unfortunately they got tight after a few hours (luckily Edwin gave me a refund.) Don’t expect to always be able to get a refund though. They have books and magazines here. Oh and Edwin (the owner) is very friendly.

Gym Standard is a dope, locally owned shoe store in North Park. The owner Edwin is down to earth and helpful. He’s got a great selection of shoes to choose from. I’ve bought a few pairs from GS and have been very happy with my purchases. It’s always a cool experience going into the shop because of the design and ambiance. So I’d say shop at GS and support local businesses!

So last time I was here I was trying to decide between a pair of Converse and a pair of some Japanese shoes. The Japanese shoes were almost twice the price of the Converse. Guess what the owner, Edwin, said… He said that he would love to sell me the Japanese shoes, but he told me that I would get more out of the Converse. And he was right. The soles of the Converse were more sturdy, as oppose to the other pair, which were so flimsy that if you stepped on a rock, you’d feel it. I wear my Converse almost everyday and I’m very, very, VERY happy with them.
I love shoes, but I love quality service more. If I want to buy a new pair in the future, I’ll take my business here first.

This is such a neat little shop. Went in to buy tickets for a show at the Soda Bar (they are the box office, and don’t charge a service fee, sooo awesome) and ended up buying a cool patch made by an artist from Toronto. I wanted to buy 4 pairs of shoes I don’t need. Family owned (very friendly and good-​looking family if I do say so myself :) local business, go check them out!

Two doors down from Coffee and Tea and in a spectacular location in North Park. Look for street parking, most being meters.
The store carries an extensive amount of footwear but also home décor or office or desk or anything you can think of. The wall of magazines are great, had to grab one myself. Edwin is great and always willing to chat it up.
They hold events from time to time and feature local artists and are all about exemplifying the local scene.

Rad shop and shop owner. Perfectly curated store of rare magazines, books, apparel, shoes and house plants and things. Had a solid 30 min convo with the owner Edwin and it felt like I’ve known him forever! Bought a Popeye magazine that I haven’t been able to put down. Coffee and tea two doors down. A Saturday well spent. Definitely coming back whenever I’m in town again.

This is a great independent store, and yes it fits the North Park hipster mold, a stone’s throw from a home brew store, third wave coffee roaster & café, a tiny movie theatre & a decent liquor store. I picked up two pairs of Tretorns here on closeout after several times just browsing through the store to see what’s new. Edwin’s a great guy and hosts artists frequently. They’ve got a limited selection of their own line of goods as well.

If you like shoes, lifestyle magazines, coffee table books, and supporting local business, then you have to stop by Gym Standard. The owner, Edwin, is a super nice guy, and he always takes time to chat when you’re there. He’s curated an awesome collection of items, and every time I drop in, I want to buy everything! Please keep this place in business and give him your money!
You can also pick up tickets for Soda Bar shows here sans any fees. Just make sure you bring cash for that part of your purchase (unless the system has changed, but last time I bought a ticket, it was cash only).

This is certainly a dope little shop for some new shoes and good reads! I dig the feel of the mom and pops boutique. The space is clean and decorated with some home goods.
Shout-​out to Edwin for being a seriously cool dude and showing some out-​of-​towners the low-​down of San Diego activities!

OK I’ll give you the low down of this little sari-​sari store. If you want your feet laced up with some classic yet progressive looking kicks, some small home décor, or just some good conversation come in and say hello. If you’re lucky you’ll catch the owner, Edwin. Filipino. Glasses. Beanie. You can’t miss him. Chat, buy something, or not, but just come support a San Diego son living his dream.

I never go to Gym Standard with something to purchase in mind, though I always find a quality gift item or a little present for myself whenever I stop by. I treat the experience more like a museum exhibit with a personal tour from the curator-​store-​owner himself, Edwin.
He makes this store for me. Since I’m trying to be frugal and most things in Gym Standard are quality items (most hand-​dyed or hand-​made or the owner know’s the guy that makes them), I’m always conflicted on whether or not I should spend the money, but the quality and the pleasant conversation with the owner makes the choice easy. I’ve never been disappointed with any of my purchases. Edwin will even throw in 15% (or some other discount) — that’s how good of a guy he is.
Anyway, just go. It’s great for gifts too, but beware of buying something for yourself instead.

What a cool, eclectic clothing and arts shop on the Boulevard! All feng shui in layout, Gym Standard has a great selection of street kicks from brands like Converse and Tretorn, plus an assortment of locally sourced accessories — everything from plants to backpacks. Lots of attention paid to style and quality. And although the goods are carefully curated, the prices aren’t prohibitive. I got a slick pair of Jack Purcell’s for a solid deal.
Edwin, the owner, is young and enthusiastic. He’s invested in the community and sponsors local art and design events along with the folks from Coffee and Tea Collective and the Homebrewer Store next door. Collectively they’re doing a wonderful job of injecting some character into this block of the Boulevard.
This is my new go-​to for shoes, and I’m looking forward to dropping in regularly to check out the other cool stuff Edwin brings in. Keep up the great work and thanks for adding some hand-​crafted flavor to the neighborhood!

Edwin, the owner of Gym Standard, has been a mainstay of the San Diego streetwear/​sneaker/​design community for a long time. Lots of people know him, and a lot of us missed him when he moved to OR. Then, we got word that he was back in SD, and that he had a new project cooking. The result was Gym Standard, and it is great.
Gym Standard has sneakers, clothing, accessories, design and home goods. While there are certainly other shops that carry some of the same brands or items, GS is very finely curated, offering something different and unique to themSan Diego scene. You won’t (currently) find Nike SB’s or Stussy shirts on the shelves, but you can still find rare sneakers, t shirts, and knit hats that will appeal to most. The home goods, soaps, pottery, and blankets are all top quality, crafted by good people and will probably attract a new and interesting cross section into the shop, and that is a good thing.
GS also hosts art shows, poetry readings, and other cultural events that draw for a wide range of interests, and do a lot to support the variety of creative people in the San Diego community. And really, I think that seems to be the point of Gym Standard. To support creativity and provide a space for San Diego to appreciate creative work in many forms.
If you get the chance, talk to Edwin for a few minutes. He might run around the store and do other things while you chat, but he always has some really thoughtful, insightful, and wise things to offer about branding, art, design, and really anything else you ask him about. The Gym Standard experience is really fantastic, and is definitely worth a trip.
