Don Ellis BBQ

I have 2 fav bbq spots here in San Diego. Phil ‘s and now Mr Don and his wife. Bombazzzz bbq at the new Chila Vista brewery… Bay Bridge Brewey today!!!

Having recently lived in memphis, i can assure you that Don Ellis compares favorably to the best there is (central bbq).

I was looking to avoid the mesquite BBQ in Escondido and San Marcos. I needed a low and slow alternative. I found Don Ellis BBQ at the Ballast Point Brewery. What a great combo! Fresh beer and BBQ. The dry ribs were great! Rib tips were great! Pork sandwich was great with perfectly toasted bun! Mac and potato salad supported the BBQ well. Hot links and a cold Sculpin are a great combo! My niece and I were drinking the BBQ sauce because it was so good — not too sweet, not too spicy! (I got my sauce on the side so I could enjoy the smoked meat.) I look forward to finding Mr Ellis at his next venue and I can’t wait to try the BBQ beans (the lunch bunch ate them all!).

I went to the new Ballast Point that’s in Mira Mesa last night hoping they would have a decent food truck since their restaurant isn’t open yet. The moment I stepped out back and caught of whiff of what was cooking I was sold. Job well done! That was definitely some of the best bbq I’ve had in Cali. I’ll be seeing y’all again soon.

Found Don and his sweet smoke at Coronado while filling my growler. The scents and flavors consumed the bar and had most folks in the tasting room drooling.
I wasn’t at all hungry but still forced myself to eat 6 wings and 3 ribs. Dons wings were among the best I’ve ever had. Moist, smokey sweet meat with his homemade tangy sauce. I could’ve eaten 12 pretty easily. 24 would have been rough but doable. And at just over a buck each they’re not only fantastic they’re a great bargain.
I think half the magic of Don’s wings are in his homemade sauce which caramelized nicely on my proteins. Maybe a tad much salt on his rub but it balanced out the sweetness of that sauce nicely so wasn’t overpowering.
Most impressive is how he gets such good results out of his modest equipment. A weber, a small barrel smoker and a propane grill.

We’re actually just wiping our hands and face after devouring platefuls of perfectly cooked BBQ meaty goodness. I had to look them up as I had never heard of their food truck before. It’s seriously the best food from a truck we’ve had in a while.
It pairs nicely with the Coronado Hibiscus IPA that I am enjoying at the Brewery in Bay Park, but this grub could be eaten on it’s own and still smack you in the face with a five finger BBQ sauce high five.

— The best BBQ I’ve had in a long time. Can you give my husband BBQ lessons?
— Please come back to Coronado Brewery, I love you.
— Bottle your sauce. I want to put it on my cereal… Not really, but you get my enthusiasm.

Man I went to the brewery in Santee, and this guys was bbq outside and it was some of the best I have had. His sauce was the best I wish he sold it and A really cool funny guy.

Checked out this guy’s BBQ at coronado brewing company. Super tangy and delicious! Went really well with the beers there. Super nice guy too
