Being an older-​aged beginner to bjj, it was a little intimidating starting the journey in a new sport. Professor Faria and his students made me feel welcomed into their «family». In each class, I have gained not only confidence in myself, but also the added benefit of building up my conditioning and strength. Johnny provides great instruction. Great group to work with.

I’ve been training Brazilian Jiu-​Jitsu at Alliance San Diego for 1 month now (~5 days a week). The facility is new, clean, and offers sufficient space in the changing room/​showers. There are free weights, medicine balls, and other gym equipment I use prior to class to do my typical weightlifting routine. From what I’ve seen, the class sizes typically range from 5 – 15 people (depending on the class/​day/​time). The students are patient with me and offer pointers as we train. Professor Johnny is very likeable and detailed in his techniques. The small class sizes enable quite a bit of direct feedback from Professor Johnny. Alliance also offers kids classes. Although I don’t have a child in attendance, I watch the Coach work with the kids as I weight lift. He is patient yet firm with all of the children and, honestly, I’m in awe of how he is able to instill respect and discipline in some of the more «energetic» kids. I would recommend the gym to those interested in training as it is a great environment to start your practice.

I’ve been to a good number of Jiu Jitsu training facilities in San Diego. I would give Alliance San Diego more than 5 starts if I could. Two huge mat areas, one is fully sprung… feels like you’re rolling on a cloud. There is full stand of 8 heavy bags and a half cage for MMA training. The locker room is super nice and clean. And nice olympic lifting area as well for strength and conditioning training.
But aside from all that, the most important thing is the owner and head instructor, Joao «Johnny» Faria is a top notch instructor. Coming from a pristine Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lineage… Johnny received his black belt from RED BELT Flavio Behring. Johnny brings his A-​game to every class… he is extremely intense and motivational (in a good way) and his tech is on point. Pretty much every move that he has taught I have incorporated into my game and have used many successfully in competition.
An additional plus, is that Alliance San Diego does competition training with other local Alliance schools at least twice a week so you constantly get a chance to roll with people other than your regular training partners.
The fellow students, all ranks, are super nice. I felt welcome and one of the gang from the first day. If you’re looking for something that is more than just a place to train, you owe it to yourself to check out the Alliance Family.

As a woman who has never done anything martial arts related — it’s a pretty intimidating thing to start.
But after giving this a go and experiencing the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by Johnny and his students … It’s become a staple in my life for the past 18 months that I’ll never go back.
It builds strength and confidence; keeps a person healthy both physically and socially. The folks at this place are the best on both a personal and professional level.
