Thirsty Horse Saloon at 730pm on a Thursday is the place to be! That is, if you are down to learn all the intricate details of two-stepping($ 5) with Ken and Alice. If you are fine with dancing as you are, this class may seem a bit slow with the beginners that come through and the moderate level dancers who have had bad technique for years. Ken and Alice are fantastic instructors who hone in on technique so you can dance to anything(as opposed to only knowing a few patterns). Ken finds different ways to explain a concept so you can really learn the move. I found that I was doing my channe turns with big honking steps, and that instead of picking up my feet I should be sliding them. Total amateur moves but without instruction I would still be doing what I originally learned. At any rate, there is no cover. The crowd is diverse. The dancers are not bad, with triple-steppers, some who look like swingers, and some lindy moves. The drive is almost an hour round trip for those from Fort Sam Houston, but SO worth the improvement in your two-stepping!

Love this place. Very Clean and a great staff. Affordable drinks and clean bathrooms The dance floor is real oak. So you get that authentic Texas feel. My favorite country bar in San Antonio. A must see for visitors and locals to San Antonio

While visiting Six Flags from Houston we decided to go out to Thirsty Horse for our only night in SA. I am a huge country love and two stepper, thought I would feel right at home in this place. WRONG! The bartender, older lady… looks about 40ish but is probably in her 30s, huge fake tits, brunette(wouldn’t tell me her name) was incredibly rude! Actually, both bartenders at the front bar were complete d*cks! The bald dude with tattoos completely ignored us even though he wasn’t doing anything, just stood there… ummm you have ONE job, serving drinks! Back to the rude woman, she eventually decided to ask for our order(bar was not packed at this point) we ordered two whiskey and cokes, $ 20 my boyfriend hands her a twenty dollar bill, before he even has a chance to reach for his other cash in his wallet to tip, this woman literally flashes it in his face and yells at him«Next time tip!!!» The nice guy that my boyfriend is, he still continues to tip her before I get the chance to rip her a new one. I have never had such a shitty experience with a bartender, especially at a country bar. We picked this place because the reviews were pretty decent. This place was ok but their staff is HORRIBLE! Also, I ordered the same drinks at the back bar and the price was completely different so the fake boobed bartender up front over charged us. Just overall a bad experience with their bartenders. Would definitely not recommend this place to anymore.

They say that you either love this place or hate it. My feelings for this country dance hall can be described as «ehh». I’ve had some great times here while have been bored to death as well. Present company is usually a factor for me and not the ambiance or service. Here are some highlights to this place compared to other country dance halls 1– There is never a cover. That is refreshing since almost all others do charge one. 2– This place never gets super packed. Even when it’s busy there is place to stand without constantly being bumped. 3– drink prices don’t get outrageous. I think I’ve paid the most of 7 dollars a drink for top shelp. Usually between 3 and 5. 4– The place has plenty of bars and staff so most wait is about 5 – 7 minutes. Of course that is subject to change with your tips. Now for some ehh parts. Atleast for me. 1– This place has a more mature and laid back crowd compared to wild west or even midnight rodeo on the weekends. Don’t get me wrong, few will dress up but every time I overdressed I felt out of place. 2– The dance floor gets super packed on busy nights and you bump into people alot. Of course I don’t like the center format either so personal preference is definitely a factor here. 3– the location is not really near a highway and you have to drive through super slow shavano park or castle hills to get here. Be careful cause they pulled me over for going 3 above the speed limit. A warning but phew! Overall an ok option for a country dance hall. I usually end up here on birthday parties or if I’m in the area but don’t drive out of my way to get here.

As a huge fan of two stepping I loved this place. What I really loved was that the dancers were so diverse. Every age and ethnicity was up in here having a blasty blast. I loved that I got to dance with a wide variety of people with a wide variety of skill(made me feel better about my lack thereof) and a variety of styles. The music was more modern and less traditional than I am used to but I can’t say it was a bad thing. The drinks are cheap as all get out too. I could complain about one thing it’s the club music playing during the intermission. I don’t come to a country bar to ear Nicki friggin Minaj in between sets. Ugh. Is nowhere safe from the banality that is top 40 music?!

Fun country bar. Lots of two-stepping and line dancing. Stop by the taco truck on the way out.

I did not like this bar at all. I went there once and never had a desire to go back. It’s right down the street from my house and I will drive an extra 20 mins just to go to another better country bar. The place smells gross. I think they need to wash their carpet. The drinks were so nasty. They were not made right. I feel this place is dingy and the back patio is enclosed not a fun place to chill.

Music is not very dancable. Would be better if there was an actual dj to request actual music that you can two step to. Love this place but they need a better dj

I like that there was no cover and it was still a good, clean and respectful crowd. Drinks are not ridiculously priced and the bartenders were attentive. A mix of a dj and live music which was pretty cool too. We will definitely be back!

This place is horse shit!!! DISCRIMINATION, they allowed me in and I’m heavily tattooed but not my man when he came to meet me because his hands are TATTOOED this is bullshit either allow tattoos or DON’T !!! Discrimination is as bad as being racist and i think the thirsty horse is both !!! My money spends the same and did somewhere else! I’ve come to find most country western bars are this way !!

If you like country music with live bands this is the place to be. There is plenty of parking. They have plenty of seating and restrooms. The Bar staff is friendly but i would like more of them. I don’t care for the wait but who does. Make sure you come wearing some cute cowboy boots and don’t be afraid to dance with different people they do ask.

Not quite a Cowboys Dancehall but it’s still something. The day I went there was a live band playing country music and when they were done they had a small DJ play some country music and then back to the live house band. The dance floor was pretty big. The crowd there was pretty mid 20s-30s and not early college age. I made a fool of myself because I haven’t danced country in a long time but I had fun. There are two different dancefloors, one big one in front of the live band/DJ and there was another in the far corner I guess was for people who wanted to practice. The drinks were okay. There’s a good amount of pool tables so that’s usually fun. I would maybe go again but this wouldn’t be my first choice country music bar.

Quite the mix of people here. From country creepers, to cougars, to hussy cowgirls and everything in between. The band playing was pretty good. We were just here to entertain friends so we werent quite concerned with dancing etc. The beers were fairly cheap and the one drink we had was decent. This place is huge though. I dont know what«typical» country bars are in San Antonio but this one seems just average, country bar trying to have a club feel to it.

First off, no cover is a plus. 21+ is also a plus so I don’t feel like I’m with the college scene. Sometimes parking is difficult on Saturday nights, but just drive around for a few minutes until someone leaves. Whenever we have a girls’ night to go two-stepping, Thirsty Horse is our choice. The crowd is friendlier; always open and willing to ask you to dance. The bartenders are ok — some take their sweet time, but I have the usual corner that I go to where she remembers my name. The music is pretty good, the live bands are always a hit. When the DJ chimes in, it’s usually hip hop or popular line dances, and the dance floor gets packed. I missed Thirsty Horse when trying out a new bar this weekend — it just wasn’t the same. Don’t ever take for granted a 21+ country bar!

I like country bars but I really don’t care for this one. My brother has a mowhawk and EVERY time we’ve walked into this bar they’ve stopped him and given him a very hard time and kind of watched him while we’re in the bar. I think this is extremely absurd considering there are WAY weirder patrons that frequent this place. They seem to welcome all walks of life once you walk in and get a good look so I’m not sure why they treat my little brother like he’s a convict… Even without the aggressive«welcome» at the front door the band isn’t very good either. They’re playing old rock at a country bar? Why? It’s hard to get a good dance song to actually 2-step to and once something good comes on the dance-floor is flooded because everyone’s been waiting for that song. Just a sidenote — nobody enjoys dancing if they come off the floor with bruises from elbows and getting toes stepped on from the couple on the right. You end up with more enemies walking out since you’ve bumped into about 30 people on the dance floor. Not a very enjoyable experience(plus you walk out smelling like an ash tray and leather). Not for me… no thank you!
