The beet salad was lucky, spicy & sweet, crunch from the spiced nuts. Great lunch option!

Had lunch with my family. Was clean with friendly and efficient service. Each of us tried a different selection and we all tried each other’s calzone each better than the next. We will come back great job!

Sauce on the Side was an amazing calzone/salad place with a walk up counter and quick service. Loved this place so much that we would come back to STL for it!

These delicious things are not calzones. A calzone is a folded pizza, these are more like focaccia pockets. That being said, the end result is a very delicious thing. All of their ingredients are fresh and their signature combinations are on point. If you’re looking for a true calzone though, the dough in these is much too bread-like. If you’d like to try something new and tasty though, give them a shot!

Crispy, gooey, warm, garlicky, and hearty calzones stuffed with a lot of heaven. Ohh my, this place probably doesn’t even need my review but I just have to. I have never been much on calzones, but I thought I’d try with all of the hype surrounding this place. Well, I am officially hooked, on their calzones anyways! My favorite is the Fatty B with light ricotta cheese and spicy red sauce. I also sometimes get The Italian salad which goes great with the aforementioned ‘zone! Gets pretty busy for lunch, so go early or call in your order. Nice outside seating at OPOP. Also, it’s pretty mellow but nicely lit for dinner too!

First time here and had the«Meet Me in St. Louie». Really good calzone! Lots of cheese and meat packed inside and the red sauce was very tasty. What makes it St. Louis style you ask? Of course it’s got melted proved cheese in there. I will definitely be back to try some of the other calzones they have to offer.

Probably the best calzone I have ever eaten! This place was awesome! In town for a convention, you simply must try it! They have a nice outside eating area as well as an inside area. Try the DUKE

We have went here a few times and each time has been phenomenal! They have a great outdoor area that has some shade if it’s super sunny out! My two favorites so far are The Duke and The Fatty B!

Amazing Calzones… Great concept, having the«sauce on the side» allows you to make your food the way you want it. I tried the Magic Carpet Ride, tons of flavor and cheese. This place was packed for lunch, but ordering was quick. Calzone came out nice and hot. Great outdoor patio and plenty on indoor seating.

Had the Duke. Next time I’ll get jalapeños in it. It needs some spice! Sodas are food and they have plenty of beer choices.

I’m in town for the weekend with my family and this is the first place we came to eat. We ordered a Caesar salad to split and we each got our own calzones. Everything was delicious!

For a downtown business lunch, this is a great location with great calzones! I had the veggie calzone with red sauce, and it was delicious. My lunch guests had various other calzones and salads, and everyone enjoyed their orders as well. Service was friendly and prompt. The restaurant itself is attractive, spacious, and clean. Large windows offer a view of the patio and a small grove of trees. Overall, this was an ideal lunch spot…

When I’m Downtown for meetings or to see my Aunt we always walk from the law office to Sauce on the Side. It’s not a large place indoors but they have an amazing outdoor seating area! Iv gotten the«Duke» every time iv came because I don’t want to mess with perfection. My aunt gets the«figgy piggy» which I sneak bites out of when she’s not looking. DELICIOUS!

One of my favorite go to downtown restaurants. Love the new location and the outside seating is amazing. I have all of the calzones at least two times and loved many but liked them all. You can’t go wrong with any of the suggested calzones and the monthly specials are just that, SPECIAL. One if my favorites is the garden calzone, being a meat lover I was surprised at the depth of flavor. Eat, drink, & be merry!!!

My Fatty B calzone was delicious! My salad was fresh and delicious! I will definitely return again. My calzone had loads of pepperoni, meatballs and roasted garlic. The pics speak volumes!

Awesome calzones. They have traditional and not so traditional(i.e. The magic carpet ride.). You Can also have a custom made calzone made. I do not care for the flow of the new space. They have the order Counter over to the right and seating to the left. They updated it but it does not fit for me as a calzone place. Different level tables, booths and flickering mosaics that do not fit. The calzones are still great. I will come back. But probably not as often

I just don’t even know where to start with these guys. They are the calzonaroni’s or something like that. Imagine a giant pool of cooked spaghetti, and then jump into it naked. That’s Sauce on the Side. Not only are the owners the nicest guys I’ve ever met in St Louis restaurants, but the food is absolutely out of this world. This review wouldn’t be complete without telling everyone they probably put crack in their calzones. because. well. I’m a huge fan of the Which Came First? Chicken, egg, cheese, onions, whatever magic they put in there, it’s awesome. I know, I know, you probably think I’m friends with all of the owners, well, I am. but I met them at their restaurant. I actually was chased by Brendan one night downtown, and thought he was a murderer in his Mini. We ran away really quick… You know, because, beard. I wrote a review a long time ago for the old location, and finally felt a need to write another one this last week. The Blarney Zone(and of course the dudes) were the inspiration, or perspiration, or something. The Blarney Zone is everything I’ve ever wanted in a meat turnover. Yep, I said it. If you plan on going to try Sauce for the first time, March is the month. Best calzone I’ve ever had in my life, may be the best sandwich type thing I’ve had in my life too. Either way, you deserve a calzone from Sauce. I think I’ve eaten around 40. slowly working my way to 100 for some type of ‘fat dude’ award. Thank you for everything you do, Ryan, Brendan, and Dan.

Walked over and ordered a take out of one of their Calzones(Fatty B) yesterday and they were not kidding! This was humongous but yet I managed to eat it all for lunch; shame, shame, shame! Very tasty.

The downtown staple, one of the few restaurants that withstands weather, cardinal baseball, and weekends in the desolate downtown landscape. I’ve been coming here for years, from whence it was the best kept secret on Pine Street to the overwhelming preeminent downtown restaurant. Basically for years restaurants in this part of town consist of lunch only spots that virtually turn cold and lifeless after 6pm or weekends. Sauce on the Side refreshingly breaks the mold with packed and lively quarters even on Saturdays. The old space had its charm but I’m glad they found a more modern spot that could accommodate more guests. Clean lines and concrete floors characterize the space on the first floor of the Roberts Tower. The food is the same, terrific and incredibly filling; Don’t be ashamed in taking a to-go box. I’ve never wavered from the«Meet me in St. Louie» Calzone, it exploded with cheese, pepperoni, and sausage. There’s never been a reason for me to try anything different but I hear equally rave reviews from their daily specials and other menu staples. The only pitfall would be the bathroom situation, you literally have to leave the restaurant, enter the hotel, and ascend a flight a stairs to find it. I won’t hold it against them, call it whatever you want; this place is outstanding.

Great location, and if you like Calzone’s this is probably the best I have ever had. Nice atmosphere and very friendly service. Docked one star because they don’t have any mainstream soft drinks. You can have your sugar cane house specials, but would it kill ya to have a couple cans of Pepsi or Coke in the fridge? I’ll be back– the Meat me in St Louis is amazing– but I’ll probably take it to go so I can enjoy a Pepsi

My review is based on carry out and delivery. I must say I am not impressed at all. Maybe dining in would taste better than carry out. I’ve had the magic carpet ride… love all sorts of mushrooms but this was extremely salty for my taste. Only had a couple bites and couldn’t handle it. I also tried both of their desserts… Apple calzone was very doughy. And Nutella banana was very mushy and delivered all mushed up… looked like the box may have dropped a few times before being delivered. Again, maybe dining in would be much better. I will try SOTS again but for dine in only. When that Happens I will update my review.

I’ve tried 4 different calzones here now. The two I’ve ordered for myself sounded good on paper but didn’t hit the spot for me. I’ve nearly completely forgotten what I ordered they were so forgettable. Something with meat balls and something else with Mac n cheese. My partner ordered the other two and hers were actually pretty good. She got some kind of thanksgiving dinner calzone that disappeared before I could sample it a second time. She also tried the fig calzone. Both much better than what I ordered. I don’t really see myself going back. So 3 stars. Service was great though! We also liked the alternative selection of soda.

I love this concept. Sauce on the Side is a calzone restaurant in downtown St. Louis. The name is a simple description of the meal because the calzones are cooked filled with cheese and toppings and the sauce comes on the side in a cup. I met my wife and daughter here for lunch during a recess at Court. You order food at the counter, take a number, and have a calzone in no time at all. I would call it premium fast-food. I had the«Meat me in St. Louis» and my wife had the«Which came first?»(it had both chicken and egg among other ingredients). These aren’t the healthiest items for a lunch, but they are decadent and filling on a cold winter day. I recently saw that Sauce on the Side is opening up in the Grove. I am glad a place like this that is so niche can thrive and expand. I’ll definitely go again and will also try their take out options.

There are a wide range of options all of which sounded delicious. The portion is very large, you receive enough to share if you are so inclined. You order at the register when you arrive and then are seated by nice enough staff. The wait is a bit lengthy, but everything tasted fresh so it was worth it. There’s outdoor seating and neat décor. I had the Roasty Toasty which was very good. When we mentioned that we were from the Cincinnati area our server said that the owners are from here, so that was a neat«small world» moment. If we were in the area, I’d like to go back and if the owners expand, I’d love to see one in our area!

Went here twice during my stay in St. Louis. There were so many choices on the menu, from sauces to the food items that can go inside the calzone. However I ordered«the Fold» both times because it was the closest thing to build your own calzone. One thing that I was disappointed about was the inconsistency of the things that went inside my calzone. The first time I ordered it, it was full with both cheeses(Mozzarella and Ricotta) and bacon. The next time I ordered it, I barely had any Ricotta and I also decided to add mushrooms, which I could barely find too. The restaurant is pretty pricey, but the size of the calzones are pretty large and enough to fill me up for lunch. I recommend it for anyone who likes calzones and won’t have trouble choosing from the vast options on the menu.

The best place for calzones! They have so many different types. I ordered the duke and it was so filling. I could only eat half of it. The sauce on the side was wonderful(BBQ ranch). I went during a conference so it was so busy!!! I opted to sit in/dine in. The order and payment needs to be made in the front then they give you a card with a medical looking character on it to symbolize a number. It’s quite hard to identify what number it is but the staff sure does know exactly what it is. The wait was a bit long around 15 min but they had a huge line around the whole restauarant. I did not mind the wait since we found a seat. They do provide free glass if you wanted to just drink water.(Honour system since water is at same place as the pop dispenser) My hubby ordered the what came first calzone it had an egg in it with chicken. Quite unique, I didn’t prefer his sauce tho it was a mild salsa, a bit spicy too. It was a great place with friendly service, fairly clean. Very close to the convention center. Affordable(around $ 11)

Not sure there are so many people that put down«this is the best calzone I have ever had» and«coolest place I have ever been» and then give it three stars. Stay off Unilocal you chuckleheads — please ! Calzones in at least ten pre made flavors and two customs. As the name implies the sauce here is «on the side» but it is ALSO on the inside for many of the choices. I just finished off a Duke with«BBQ Sauce» yet the BBQ was just a flavor the sweet filling if the pie. My sauce on the side was salsa verde which matched perfectly to those sweet internal flavors. Calzone was perfect ! Not much to add there Staff was phenomenal ! Offered up a great chocolate for dark draft. Brought out the food actually caring what I thought. Odd set up of ordering a pie & drink and THEN going to sit down(Odd set up for coming in the door actually) But YOUHAVEJUSTGOTTOTRYTHISPLACE — ATLEASTONCE !!! was that loud enough?

It’s a glorified hot pocket! I had the«meat me in St. Louie» calzone and that’s all I could keep thinking… That damn jingle«hotttt pocket» The staff was friendly, the food came out quick and the calzone was a good size. Overall, the oozing creamy mascarpone cheese wasn’t the type of cheesiness I want out of the hot pocket, errr… I mean calzone. The cheese sauce was more built for a pasta. With not many options downtown I see how it’s popular, but it’s not worth a trip out of your way to eat there.

ABSOLUTELY the perfect quick dining lunch spot. The other Sauce(SOTS) restaurants are also outstanding with flavorful and fresh food that is custom prepared very fast. Great for groups or just a solo lunch. Come hungry and ready for some superb flavors all around. Located in the Magnolia hotel. Great area, great food, fast and superb quick lunch spot. Probably great for dinner, but I work nearby so I go for lunch. Ask about the options for the Calzones and sauces at the counter and get something unique. Who thought CALZONE’s could be so fun! Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode.

First time in! No disappointments for this table of 4! 4 salads, 4 Calzones, a lager, a water and a bottle of wine. There was a little bump in the road that made us a little leary, but OUR experience was wonderful! The staff was very apologetic to the unhappy patrons as well as us. They were all very attentive and professional. Salads were fresh and tasty and the Calzones are made to order. People… MADETOORDER means you MAY have to wait a little bit. All in all we had s great dinner and look forward to going back.

Pretty decent spot to get made-to-order calzones. They have a really nice outdoor patio area, which is perfect on a nice Autumn evening like today. They only do calzones, and they have a decent salad selection, and maybe like 1 or 2 desserts. Each calzone is about $ 10 or less, so it’s not too bad. You can pick a premade one, or customize your own. I got the«Which came first?» — it has chicken and an egg in it with jalapenos and lots of cheese. If you get a calzone from somewhere like Pizza Hut, it’s usually super greasy. Not this place. The crust was dry, almost crisp. It was actually really hard to not eat all my simple carbs this time. Even though they gave me this fancy verde sauce, I kinda wished they had just given me marinara and hot sauce. It was good though, and I’ll probably come back again since it’s an easy place to grab a quick bite. If you do get a salad though, make sure you ask for sauce on the side. I got a small italian that was drenched in sauce. I kinda just assumed it would be on the side.

This will be my 2nd time reviewing Sauce now that they’ve moved. The old place — 5 Stars. The new place, 5 stars… you do the math. When it’s November, try the«Mayflower»…turkey dinner in the calzone. The other 11 months, these guys enjoy what they do. Great service, good guys run this place! And they always have delicious PBR!

Sauce On The Side upgraded with their new location. It’s still the same fast-casual calzones you love but with much more room. They now have a ton more seating both inside and out. If you can sit on the patio you should. There aren’t many patios downtown but this is one of the few. I went in for a to-go order a decided on the«Carmen.» It’s prosciutto, capicola, spinach, parmesan, fontina, ricotta, garlic oil, & garlic butter sauce. It is really good but I’ve had other ones I like more. I don’t think there is a calzone I wouldn’t like on the menu… PS they also have ice cream and it’s delicious. You won’t regret trying it!

Pro: I never knew that calzones came in so many varieties. I’m a big fan of the Constanza and the Fatty B. Check out the monthly specials too. No disappointments! Con: It’s just calzones and a few salads. Don’t ask for spaghetti. They’re fresh out… Bottom Line: Good food that sticks to your ribs! Enjoy!
