History

Established in 1975.

Located on Historic South Main Street in St. Charles, Missouri, The Glass Workbench a family owned business was opened in 1975 by Joanne and Glen Bishop. Daughter Jean Dryden, a glass designer and artist in her own right, now runs the business operation. Daughter Julie Bishop Day creates beautiful custom glass work on commission. Glass artist Dave Hibbeler, teaches classes and advises patrons on glass selection and projects.

My family has had The Glass Workbench for almost 39 years and I’ve been involved since the beginning. It’s great to do something you love and that gives you a chance to make people happy whether it’s helping them make their first stained glass window or helping to pick out the perfect gifts for their friends or family members. The location my Mom and Dad chose for the shop is also a great place to come to work each day. The Missouri river flows by the back of the shop and beautiful historic Main Street is in the front. Come say hello-you’ll love this place!

Amazing glass store! I happened by during the ice sculpture festival after having bookmarked it awhile ago, after reading Patt O’s review. She was right! Loved this place.
Lots of glass items, figurines, and even a huge assortment of different color, one of a kind marbles that kids were delighting in picking out. I bought a glass figurine for my husband and a yard ornament for myself. I’m obsessed with yard adornments for my large garden, and I found some here that were unique and I hadn’t ever seen anything like them before. The one I got was a type of bird, green and purple, with a long tail. Not as uninspiring as I describe it.
They were nice enough to hold it for me while I shopped so I didn’t have to carry it!
I’ll be back!

There is so much to admire in this shop!
Glasswork in so many unique forms: the norm you might expect, but good-​sized Christmas ornaments in all colors, and mixed shades and ribbons of color, entire tabletop Christmas trees with ornaments that were gorgeous, yard ornaments, balls that you could put anywhere in your house, marbles you could put in a basket or a bowl.
A Tiffany glass lamp for $ 3,200. .. all the way down to the mini Christmas tree with ornaments for $ 16.99.
Many of the garden/​yard ornaments were enticing. They were all on hefty metal sticks to withstand being out of doors.
And there was reasonably priced jewelry of all kinds and colors.
What a shiny place abundant in lovely, mesmerizing and original glass!

I took a class at the Glass Workbench to make two dichroic glass pendants. The «class» part lasted about 20 minutes, and then we had over an hour to take glass pieces and put them together for submission to the kiln.
I could have done a hundred of these things — it was a lot of fun, even though I had no idea how it would turn out! The instructor was a lot of help — coming around individually and telling us the best way to stack the glass, creative color combinations, and information about the glass in general. I picked mine up at the shop, and received compliments the very first time I wore it.
It was a lot of fun, although a little pricey. I’d love to take a stained glass class, but they are also expensive, and require about $ 100 worth of tools to purchase. If you’re intending on making this a long-​time hobby, this would be a great thing! For a hobby, it’s a little expensive.

I found the Workbench on line when I needed to have an old stained glass window from a church restored for display in a historical museum. We drove to St Charles and found a large shop on Main street. The people were very friendly and helpful. Their expert looked the piece over discussed his recommendations and quickly gave me a price for the work. I thought the price was fair and reasonable.
We needed to replace a pain and he found an excellent match. I needed him to alter the edge of the piece and replace the complete channel edge. The work was completed in less than a week and turned out perfectly. He even had to do a little more than anticipated but stuck with the original price even though I offered to pay him.
Excellent, reasonably priced work. They custom build windows for homes, and offer all manner of supplies for hobbyists. It was a good find, I am very pleased with the results.

The Glass Workbench is jam packed with colorful glass pieces. They come in the form of vases, ornaments, earrings, lamp shades, garden decorations, necklaces and SO much more.
Have a particular color that you are looking for? No problem! I will bet that they have it. Plus… each one is unique. Cruise this space for the perfect gift for any occasion. I picked up a sweet necklace and earring set for a really reasonable price for myself. I also found a gorgeous vase for my sister-​in-​law.
