History

Established in 2010.

Host of Sparrows Aerial Dance was hatched in the imagination of Heather Bailey, as she had a vision of a performance in the air, a place she had never danced. After 4 years of performance training outside of Virginia and a collaboration with Ground Zero Dance Company, for the grand opening of Dogtown Dance Theatre, a perfect venue opened it’s doors to her dream. The program was a grassroots artist collective of people who love art and dance and dream of flying. For the first 2 years, her mentor, Robin Berry provided teacher training and program development, and over the years other professional contemporary circus arts teachers and performers have joined the program. Host of Sparrow is Virginia’s first and Richmond’s own!

Meet the Business Owner

Heather B.

Business Owner

I fell in love with aerial work as I found it to be empowering and challenging. I felt it was like yoga, in that the challenges are not a competition with others, but a chance to learn about your body, and yourself. The challenges are individual to each person and I love working with students and performers to help them be their best. I have always been a kinesthetic learner, and a kinetic person with an insatiable need to move, and I found my calling along with a Host of Sparrows. I recognize that not everyone in circus wants to fly, which is my specialty, and have been fortunate to find my circus people through the development of this program and the artistic troupe, who teach and perform other contemporary movement and circus modalities that are not my strengths. I could not ask for a more talented, supportive, and reliable bunch of birds!
