Smileworks of Redondo Beach

My 22 year old son wanted to try this dental office since it’s closer to home than the old dentist. BIG MISTAKE! He went in for his six month cleaning with X-​rays and walked out with a treatment plan for 3 fillings and a crown replacement. This was going to cost over $ 1,000. I couldn’t believe he needed all this work since he had been cavity-​free for years and very regular with his check-​ups.
I sent him back to the old dentist and had Smile Works email the digital X-​rays over. Our old dentist said that one tooth needed to be watched, but did not recommend any fillings and no crown replacement for sure!
Therefore I question the integrity of Dr. Mohindra at Smile Works. I will make the drive to the old dentist.

I’ve been going to the office for the past 2 years. In 2015, i had my bi-​annual cleaning/​exams. BOTH times i went last year, Doctor Mohindra was NOT there. I went again in December 2015, and got my x-​rays and the receptionist told me the Dr would follow up with results. I got no phone call.
First of all, why can’t the receptionist give me a call prior to my appointment to let me know the doctor is sick, BOTH TIMES? I get it, you’re sick and in all fairness can’t do anything about it. Hell, I wouldn’t want to have a sick Doctor operating my my mouth either, but please let me know ahead of time as I am leaving work early and losing wages to come to a Dental office without a Dentist.
What kind of a dental office has only ONE doctor? If a dentist is sick, they should have a back-​up at all times.
Why didn’t the dental office follow-​up with my results? For all I know, I could have a cavity or something serious.
To me, it’s a lack of professionalism on their end. I am paying monthly and not getting the attention or service I need.
2 stars for state of the art equipment and proximity to my home. I will be looking elsewhere in 2016.

I noticed almost all the negative reviews are due to insurance issues, and I can’t relate to that. Elaine was very careful when I booked my appointment to let me know about how much everything would cost, and to verify my insurance was covered before even coming in for my first visit.
Dr. Mohindra and his staff made my exam, cleaning, and fillings an excellent experience. The first thing they did was take pictures inside my mouth, then they showed me my full set of teeth and pointed out exactly where and what was a potential issue — then what should be done to correct it. Sounds simple I know, but that transparency and putting everything in easy-​to-​understand terms made me feel safe and confident about the work that needed done. The team was extremely friendly and they certainly know their stuff. I home to keep coming here for a long time, and I highly recommend this place to anyone seeking a new dentist!

Smileworks is probably the best Dental Practice I have been too and I have been to many Dentists. The Dentist, Dr. Mohindra takes the time to explain what is needed and why. Competent, patient and friendly. I most highly recommend Smileworks for the outstanding staff and the Dentist.

I cant comment on the insurance issues that other Unilocalers have had, but in terms of their office, friendliness, customer service, and Dr Mo’s bedside manner, it is a 5-​star place!

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU WANT A TRUTHFUL SERVICE
I went into the Office for a consultation appointment (my first at the office) and asked the receptionist several times to make sure they accepted my insurance and that my appointment was covered under my insurance. I had her CALL my insurance (which she said she did) to make sure and she told me it was covered. I think her name is NIKKI. After my appointment these were her words: «Thank you for coming. I checked and your appointment today is 100 percent covered». I am 22 years old and recently started having to worry about my own medical and dental appointments so I made sure with her that I wasn’t going to get screwed over with a bill.
And then a few weeks later I get a bill in the mail for $ 200 and my appointment was not covered –_​– I called to talk to them and explained to them that I shouldn’t be getting a bill. They were SO RUDE and not understanding at all — completely lied to me the day of my appointment. They refused to even listen and all they had to say was you don’t have to pay this now, you can make payments over time. They are only nice to you when you first walk in and will tell you they accept your insurance to get your money.
PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THEM. Trust me you can get equally as good of dental care elsewhere where they will not screw you over.
Also I know other people who have gone to this dentist and had similar experiences. One of my friends was charged way for than they originally quoted her for just for some fillings — they are just hungry for money.

I only have positive things to say about Smileworks. The staff is amazing and Dr. Mo is genuinely caring and an excellent dentist. I first brought in my 5 year old daughter based on a recommendation from a close friend. My daughter had an originating fear of dentists. She’s tried 2 already and unfortunately could not finish the needed work on her teeth (fillings). She was much more comfortable at Smileworks but she still cried (for a long time lol) but the staff was so so patient with her. They were able to do one procedure out of multiple she needed after comforting her.
Unfortunately my daughter continued to be uncooperative. The staff recommended us to a pediatric dentist at the end. But they made it so easy by calling them for me, making the appointment, and sending all necessary information including my insurance.
I would not hesitate going back or recommending Smileworks to others.

Two Words. Painless Dentistry. What says it all

I used to love Smileworks for cleanings and filling but I’ve had to get the same tooth filled and refilled 3 times in one month. This is ridicules.

After reading some of the other reviews I’m wondering if they even went to the same place I did. For starters, they’re your teeth and if you don’t take care of them it costs money!
I’m an insurance agent and sell dental insurance so I’ve come across many dentists in my time, but I have yet to find one as state-​of-​the-​art yet reasonably priced as this one. I’m 44 years old and recently my girlfriend told me I should seriously think about getting all the metal out of my mouth and converted to composite fillings. Dr. Mo told me he doesn’t even suggest metal fillings anymore. Furthermore, It’s not my place to talk about dollar amounts but let’s just say it was less than the dentist I had my insurance with– yes I didn’t even use insurance.
As all the other reviews (even the confused ones) have stated, the staff is topnotch, professional, warm and both Dr. Mo and his assistants have amazing «bedside manner». I don’t get freaked out going to dentists but I did notice the care they took in explaining the process of what they were going to do.
Bottom line, if you compare apples to apples with what you’re getting done, you can’t beat Dr. Mo and Smileworks RB.
P. S. For all those that don’t like going to the dentist, it’s in your head. I literally did not feel an ounce of discomfort from start to finish.

I moved to California 14 years ago and have been trying to replace my lifelong dentist from my hometown of New Orleans (Dr. Terry Billings is AWESOME!).
This is my 5^th dentist and can I just say, whew, exhale… finally. Dr. Mo, Cara, Elaine and the entire staff are friendly, knowledgeable, kind and understanding. I finally feel happy and comfortable. Even though I live in 90 035, I will gladly drive to Redondo Beach! Thanks Todd at 1−800-DENTIST, I’m so happy I’m smiling :)

Smile Works in Redondo Beach is the best! Thank GOD I have finally found a dentist in the Los Angeles, South Bay area! If you are looking for great customer service, actual artistic talent, and a cleanly dentist. This is the place for you!
I have grown up going to the same dentist my whole life and moved to LA 5 years ago, i did not realize how long it would take to find a talented dentist! Then after the most painful root canal due to a bad filling from Del Dental Group in Playa Del Rey I will never trust anyone else with my teeth but Dr. Blake LaBounty. Please people don’t let your husband pick the dentist based on the waiting room, and insurance!
Make sure to call in advance, he is really busy but well worth the wait!

Dentist was very good. Hygienist was excellent. I needed a deep cleaning and she did a great job. I paid with Care Credit and they worked with me a little bit on the price. So, that was nice. Everyone was friendly. I’d recommend Smileworks to friends.

I wanted to find a new dentist in a nice office. Smileworks is a beautiful office. BE CAREFUL though — you are definitely going to pay for it.
I have dual insurance and took our family of four there. I kept asking to make sure all services would get covered, but they never gave me estimates beforehand. My daughter has a very soft teeth and they told me that she need six crowns — finally gave me an estimate of $ 8000. Wow!
I decided to get a second opinion because I thought our whole family was being gouged… I found another dentist that said that he would not do six crowns on my daughter because her teeth were too soft and they probably would not hold. Instead, the new dentist did fillings.
Anyway, we never went back to Smileworks. Then… almost seven months later, I get a bill for $ 400. When I called to ask why, they said that it takes a while! BS! I told them that each of our family members had $ 3500 each in coverage and how could we be getting a bill.
The staff were not friendly and the insurance people really do not have a clue.
Do not go there!

I haven’t had the best experiences with Dentist and so I thought I would share my satisfaction with Smileworks.
I went to 2 dentists in the South Bay both of which were very shady. I originally went to a dentist in Redondo and he stated I need to have deep cleaning and I had 2 cavities. I went to another dentist for a second opinion and was told I had 2 cavities, but they were completely different teeth than the first dentist had stated. This dentist also said I need deep cleaning, so I went ahead and did it. It took 20 minutes and wasn’t painful at all. My dad had just had this done and said it took several hours and was really painful. I decided to go to Smileworks for another opinion.
They said that the previous dentist didn’t do deep cleaning and that they probably did some UV thing. They are super honest and I’ve been coming here for about 1.5 yrs. I won’t be going to another Dentist unless I move.

I went to Smileworks earlier this year for a cleaning and general checkup. As I hadn’t been to the dentist in a year, and have always had «soft teeth» since I was a child as well as TMJ, I knew that the experience would be unpleasant.
My first visit to smileworks was wonderful as the dentist and staff were very friendly and invested in my teeth. The office is clean and equipment modern. I know I have a lot of problems and lost my bite guard so I have gum recession, tooth brush abrasions and cracked a cap off. They didn’t make me feel bad about the problems I had which some offices try to do in order to get you to do more stuff for your teeth.
The hygenist was very nice, explaining everything to me about tartar and using an electric toothbrush. After the x-​rays, the dentist came in and went over my x-​rays tooth by tooth and explained what I had and what needed to be done. He was really nice and I enjoyed talking to him. He also gave me the impression that he was skilled and well-​trained which is important to me in a health care professional.
The last person I spoke to that day gave me my estimate and I almost died but it was all without insurance but since I’ve been back to get the work done its been a LOT cheaper that what they quoted. She also gave me a discount as the total was so high.
When I went back to get a cap and new bite guard made the woman who first started working on my tooth seemed normal but then started making small talk. She asked me about my weekend and I said it was fine. I asked about hers and she sighed heavily and said «Working, lots of working». I asked her if she was working here and she said no, her other job doing permanent make-​up, then turned to face me. I can only assume that she was trying to see if I wanted permanent makeup? The whole moment was bizarre as I was at my dentists office and about to go through a painful expensive procedure to get a cap made. Why would the dental assistant try to sell me another high-​cost elective procedure? Overall, I thought that was very unprofessional. The dentist came in and did a great job, prepared my tooth and made a temporary cap, and the assistant didn’t mention it again but if they knew she was trying to sell patients an elective cosmetic procedure I wonder how they would feel about it?
I never said anything that day but my insurance is about to run out and I will definitely say something when I know I’m not going back. That worker may have generated other clients out of the patients in the clinic but to suggest it to someone the second they get in the dentist chair is not only insulting as I don’t need permanent makeup but it also shows a lack of social skills. Rapport develops over time.
I have one more appointment and I can only hope that woman doesn’t work in a lipo clinic too.

Like Erica F., as an insurance-​less girl, I took advantage of the $ 49 Groupon cleaning/​exam/​x-​ray special.
Honestly, if the workers weren’t so friendly, I would have only given Smileworks 1 star but they were very warm and friendly. The décor is very sterile and modern.
The main reason I made this appointment was because it was such a great deal for a full set of x-​rays. The problem was that my mouth is really small and adult x-​rays are too big for me. Smileworks is not kid or adult-​with-​small-​mouth friendly because they don’t offer kid x-​rays. They had to cram the adult-​sized x-​rays in my mouth and my teeth couldn’t close properly around the x-​rays. All I could do was hope that the open-​mouthed x-​rays turned out well.
After the x-​rays, another worker cleaned my teeth. She was very nice and took the time to measure any gum recession so I would have a basis for comparison in the future. That was really nice — I mean who wants full-​blown gingivitis, right? She also went over flossing — she said I could improve my technique so I am getting both sides with each floss.
They found a cavity and they also said one of my old cavities needed to be refilled because it had chipped. They quoted me $ 1,200 for both. I nearly fainted but was able to maintain my composure. Needless to say, I’m going to get a second opinion.
To transfer my x-​rays to another dentist to get a second option, I simply had to fill out a form and email it back to Smileworks. It was a no hassle process but unfortunately, the dentist who received them said they were really poor quality. I don’t know if they sent them at a lower resolution or if they were bad to begin with but I’m disappointed.

This place was great. Like the reviewer below me, I took advantage of the $ 49 Groupon for X-​ray and cleaning. The doctor was super nice, the office was clean and everyone was friendly and attentive.
To the reviewer who gave this place one star — sorry you didn’t get the exact type of whitening you wanted, but this is not a 1 star establishment. I would give it 4 and a half overall but since you rated it so horribly I felt the need to bring it higher. This place met and exceeded my expecations.

It’s a tooth whitening place couched in the disguise of a dentist’s office.
I went here taking advantage of the $ 49 Groupon cleaning/​exam/​x-​ray special recently. I needed a cleaning as it had been over 9 mos since my last one. Without insurance, I needed inexpensive but quality service. The office is very nice, high tech feeling — and they were very understanding when I expressed concern about what seemed like unsanitary x-​ray procedures (the dentist even came in and assuaged my concerns about how they sanitize the equipment.) They did a full mouth set of x-​rays — 18 in total, not just the usual 4 «bite wing» style x-​rays, more thorough and on certain individual teeth.
The cleaning was fast, the hygienist was gentle with the horrible scraping. I found out I needed a filling, bummer.
Nice staff and very accommodating. The minus one star is for the price — $ 225 for a filling — ouch! I went elsewhere (see Dr Negrete in Santa Monica) and for the fact that they did try to upsell me to tooth whitening services. I’ll pass!
