The Westin Mission Hills Gary Player Signature Course

I came here a few weeks ago and loved it. Immaculate fairways and greens. Really nice people. A special shout-​out goes out to Florentino (sp?) who served us lunch in the clubhouse. He was AMAZING. Went far far beyond what I would expect from a server and made our lunch just super enjoyable. So smiley! I love him! I hope somebody is reading this because he was just the most lovely and helpful human being ever :))

Another great Palm Springs course with plenty of water hazards and bunkers to make your round interesting.
Not much of a clubhouse — It’s actually quite small and unassuming for such a nice course.
Fairways — immaculate
Rough — pretty forgiving — houses line many of the holes — wayward shots could end up in a pool or hitting a roof
Sand Traps — deep and unforgiving — protects most holes
Service — country club service — even wiped down my clubs after the round
Don’t underestimate the heat. It’s easy to get heat stroke out here.
Pro tip: 15 and under play free and free club rentals when accompanied by a paying adult — AWESOME deal

Since William reached out to me, I was fortunate enough to return to the course today for another round.
My brother and I made the journey to the desert and the course did not disappoint. Conditions were ideal (88, sunny, limited wind) and the course was great. Fair rough, pure fairways and greens.
The only minor disappointment was that we played as a two some in 4 hours and 45 minutes. This-​however– was not enough to disappoint us. All of the Palm Springs courses are busy this time of year. Thanks for the second try William– we will be back again!

They have us start by playing the BACK NINE.
Our golf partners for today include two locals, 80-​year-​old Jerry and Charles who appears to be in his early fifties. Both are kind, helpful and easy-​going. Jerry is from Michigan but this «Buckeye» won’t hold that against him. ;)
This hole is on the back nine. The weather is in the mid to high eighties which is warmer than anticipated. They let areas which naturally absorb more sun burn out and keep the tee boxes, fairways and greens lush.
Charles generously provides us with our distances frequently throughout the day via the GPS golf rangefinder feature in his phone.
Beautiful mountain views.

This course is less intimating than the Westin Peter Dye course.
I liked it here cuz the greens were mostly flat with the exception of a few holes where there were some water hazards where the pin was on an island. We would have finished within the 4 hours and 15 minutes except the foursome ahead of us were very slow. Finish within 4h 15m entitles you to a hot dog or flat bread at $ 4.15. John the marshall gave it to us anyway.
Today being Saturday lots of homeowners on the perimeter of the golf course were BBQing and sunbathing in their yards as we played on the course.
After golf we used our $ 4.15 ticket and redeemed it for a Chicago style hot dog. Hubby and bro in law got chili on theirs. Sis and I got the typical dog. Ours was cool lukewarm. The hubbies enjoyed theirs more than we did. There’s no draft beer, only canned beer.
I’d play here again given a chance.

Déjà vu … nearly every hole. Surprise, another straight 400 yard-​ish par 4. Virtually every hole here is the same. This is one of the least exciting or memorable golf courses I’ve ever played. The par 3s were the only thing different here. The par 5s are just longer versions of the 4s. Straight and boring.
I can’t believe Gary Player had anything to do with this course other than accepting money to use his name. There are no forced layups, no bunkers to be carried, no drivable par 4, no risk-​rewards, no creek crossings … seriously, you could play this course with just a putter. The greens were a strange mix of bermuda and rye … like straight grass sticking up from what would normally be a good green surface. The greens do not receive a good shot. I have never seen flatter less interesting greens. Every putt is straight or maybe a 2″ break at the most. Sometimes, it’ll break, sometimes it won’t — it depends on what it hits on the way.
The only thing that makes this course challenging at all is the spotty grass around the greens. It’s like bores hair. It sticks straight up but isn’t thick enough to hold a ball, so your ball sits on the dirt but you can’t putt it and you can’t chip it without catching it fat, so every chip is either over the green or short.
For inexperienced golfers this course could be fun because they don’t know any better, but for better players it’s not fun.
Oh, one more thing, how is it that #5 from the black tees has a 200 yard plate, says 200 on the card yet we all lasered it to 185 to the center? Did they need a few extra yards?
Finally, why bother to print up hole description cards? There’s nothing hidden. Nothing you can’t see from the tee box. I can’t remember one hole from any other … Normally, you can ask someone, «What’d you do on 12,» and they’d be able to tell you, here, no chance, not even when reminded. «It was a straight forward 400 yard par 4 …» Which one?
I’ve seen courses like this before they’re designed by housing tract developers. They love straight, it’s easier to build houses around.
They should really hire a real golf course designer to fix it. Move some tee boxes, plant some trees, move some bunkers, move some greens …
I should add that the staff are great. Very professional and friendly.

A great course, a ways away from the Westin resort there. The course looks fairly straight forward, but if you get off the fairway — watch out! that rough will EAT YOUR BALLS!!! Keep it in the fairway, and you get along much better.

An excellent Gary Player designed course par 72 73.4÷131 from middle tees. Well manicured and maintained beautiful course. The course is typical of a Players course well defended greens. Fast but rolling true. I’m not one for letting facilities determine my ratings of a course but they where not as good as they ought to be

The greens are burnt. The pro shop is non-​existent and the course is directly in the Coachella wind tunnel. For the price, it is almost a fair deal.

Played June 9, 2014, 8:30am…fantastic facilities from the clubhouse to the driving range. Finished my round in about 3 hours as a single on a warm Monday morning. There was a 40-​man shotgun on the front 9, so the starter sent me out on the back 9. I didn’t run into them at all. The course was in great shape, and it truly is a great design. It’s fair, and it’s not a «target» golf course. It’s generous off the tee and the greens are hard and fast. I think it’s underrated and I will be back!

The golf course is in good shape, but surprisingly forgiving off the tee and around the greens. It is a great place to go to build your confidence on the golf course.
As for the club house, get the burger dog! It was surprisingly good. Chopped up bits of seasoned ground beef in a hot dog bun… I know, it sounds crazy. But it was delicious! Homemade potato chips topped it off.

This is a nice looking course. However, this review is for the the club house, food, and service.
The club house is old and dinky. The menu is limited. I came in for lunch around 2pm and was told that after lunch hours, they only offer turkey sandwich and hot dogs. The hot dog was $ 8. The hot dog was not bad, but for $ 8, I was expecting it to be the best hot dog I have ever had. It was not. The fries were crispy and of the right thickness.
The service around the club house was not very good. No one is ever at the kitchen counter and a customer would have to call the back to get someone to take the orders.
The catties were pleasant and attentive.
