History

Established in 2012.

In 2004 Adria Sparhawk opened «Lavish» an organic floral studio here in Portland Oregon. While we still offer floral services for weddings and special events we have just expanded our offerings into — «Thicket» a new garden boutique located just off of Alberta on NE 23rd ave. Wild natives and curiously unusual plants are our specialty but we also carry an array of old friends and stand by’s as well as a growing selection of seeds, tools and amendments to help you create the garden you dream of. Inspired by nature, our passion is to develop beautiful spaces that blur the line between outside and in. Come see us today and let us help you create an inviting living space.

Business Owner

Adria Sparhawk grew up in the Pacific Northwest and from a very early age began to develop a love affair with the natural world. She is endlessly inspired by the rugged beauty of the Northwest as well as the wild places she finds along her travels. She has made it her undertaking to kindle this same love in anyone she possibly can. «Lavish» — an organic floral studio has evolved into «thicket» a neighborhood garden shop where she continues to share the natural beauty found all around us.

My favorite little plant-​haunt in all of PDX. A little bit of everything to be found here, succulents, indoor plants, outdoor edibles, ground cover, water plants, you name it — thicket has a great variety!
Tucked behind Pine State and Hana Sushi on Alberta, this is my absolute go-​to spot for adding to my indoor jungle, outdoor garden, and finding the perfect plant gift for friends. Ridiculously good prices too, and the friendliest shop owner in town. Get your green on, go to thicket!

In a town teeming with garden shops I used to go all over town from place to place looking for new and unusual varieties of plants and flowers until Thicket opened three years ago. Now I do all of my garden shopping there and lucky me it’s in my neighborhood! It’s a tiny little place and it’s tucked behind some other businesses off of Alberta, but it’s packed with beautiful and unique plants and flowers and all sorts of natural treasures. It’s worth a visit even if it’s not in your neighborhood. Plus the owner is really knowledgeable and friendly.

The woman who helped me, I’m not sure if she was the owner or an employee, was so kind! If you’re looking for excellent customer service while looking for your next favorite plant or necessary basic gardening supplies, come here!
I didn’t want to get the available cactus/​succulent mix because it contained peat moss which I read retains moisture (and you don’t want your succulents sitting in water). I was dismayed when I realized she only had massive potting soil bags for sale, but the woman was so kind with my soil needs that she found an open bag the nursery was using and sold me my own personal take away bag of soil in a Thicket brown paper shopping bag! I was so stoked I didn’t have to run off to Target, Home Depot, etc to continue the soil hunt.
So I recommend you check Thicket out for kind customer service as well as an amazingly huge array of succulents, cacti and plants galore — they all looked amazingly healthy and beautiful despite our dry, crazy hot Portland summer :)

There I was again and out I walked with three new fabulous plants. Love the layout of this place, the artsy-​ness of it all. An oasis right there along Alberta. (if you are waiting in line at Pine State have your friends keep your place and come wander the plants just behind their building at this fab nursery.
I went with moderate for price due to the eclectic selection of unusual plants. They do have a few goodies that could be considered inexpensive BUT this is a place of intrigue. On every table you’ll no doubt find something new/​fantastic– this is not your box store inexpensive everything nursery.
I live on the west side and drive to this business to find unusual plants.

Beautifully designed place, lots of variety and inventory which means there’s always something to come away with, and a really friendly helpful woman who works there. I love this place. The staff are knowledgeable and so helpful. They have a fascinating selection of succulents especially, and they offer some gorgeous plantings in various pots and containers, ready for your garden patio. Their succulents and other plants are top notch and their prices are quite reasonable. My friends and I walked away with several plants each and were all very happy with our purchase. Visit, you will be glad you did.

The gardener in me was absolutely dying. This place is beyond adorable and full of the most beautiful plants, flowers, succulents trees and vegetables. This little business is someday dream of mine. Broke my heart not to buy anything, since I had no way to get it back home to LA, but there are so many different varietals of veggies I had never heard of, I was in complete and utter awe. It was inspiring to think beyond what I already have on my rooftop garden and what I could add to it.

Best nursery experience I’ve had in Portland. I’m a succulent slut, and not only do they have a fantastic variety, their prices are also better than their competetors (2″ pots are $ 2 here and $ 3 everywhere else). They also have great containers for reasonable prices. Their plants are healthy and they have a lot to choose from considering their smallish size. If you’re looking for trees and large shrubs, this place may not be your best option, but if you want mostly anything else, and would enjoy geeking out about plants with the oh-​so-​sweet and incredibly adorable owner, then by all means, pay Thicket a visit. You won’t be sorry. I promise. Love love LOVE this place!

I love this place. They always have at least one thing I can’t leave without. The owner is always super helpful and knowledgeable about the plants and will freely give any information she can about each one.
Also, the layout and design of the space is beautiful! Especially as more items come in during the spring and summer. There are a couple of chairs by a water feature that are perfect to relax on while perusing the many botanicals.
They also have great classes ranging from companion gardening to building your own Christmas wreath and garland.

What a wonderful find! While I was getting a haircut at «The Modern Man (5 stars),» my wife saw the line across the street at «Pine State Biscuit (5 stars).» While we munched we watched a few people going around the side and returning with some perfectly-​sized urban plants, so we wandered in.
The place is wonderful for the small-​setting apartment dwellers we’ve become. One of the things I missed most about downsizing was my garden, but Thicket has just the right accoutrements to bring the green back into our lives.
And I don’t have to weed anymore!
We have started with a small succulent selection for my office while we survey the home geography for botanical opportunities. We will be back.
Thicket is a treat, and highly recommended.

The esthetic and design is lovely then add in beautiful plants; edible, groundcover, indoor even. Thicket has a wonderful staff who are knowledgeable and friendly. We have worked with Adria before with her Floral Co. Lavish Flora, so we knew it would be fabulous. But now to have a nursery in the Alberta neighborhood and done with the same quality we have experienced makes this such a treat.
