Marbott’s Greenhouse & Nursery

Went in because the location was close to a project I was working on. Great advice, knowledge of the inventory, and customer service. I’ll be back wherever my next project is located!

Love this place. They have the plants and flowers that I have not been able to find any where else locally and the customer service and knowledge they have is outstanding.

Nice plants, high prices, intolerable customer service … Don’t go near the old man — or better yet — don’t shop here

This wonderful place has so much to offer. I get my all my plants here for my garden. The prices are very good and it’s not as busy as Portland nursery.
Customer service is very helpful and the dude working the cashier is a kick in the pants. He will give you old school tips, and they work I tried them…

This place is FANTASTIC! I have been a regular customer of Marbott’s ever since I moved into my North Portland neighborhood. This is a family owned and operated business and everyone has always been incredibly helpful in answering any of the crazy gardening questions I have. It’s worth mentioning that I tend to have many questions as I am not a gardening master… yet.
I really like the organization and layout of this nursery. Like items are grouped together. So helpful when I’m needing lots of shade loving plants or in need of hanging basket plants.
As for the quality of plants here, I have always had great luck. So far nothing I have taken home with me has died right away, (Anything that did die on me was by my own fault).
Prices here are always reasonable and I always prefer supporting a local business like this.
If you need something for inside the house Marbott’s also has a great selection of houseplants. You can find succulents, air plants, and other fun things to brighten up your indoor space.
If you have not checked this place out, I suggest putting it on your list.

I love Marbott’s, sometimes I go just to take in the glorious smells.
In early spring the greenhouses are full of primroses, it’s a bit of heaven.
This is a family business and I know from experience how much work it
is to run a small business in todays economic climate. I’d love to encourage people to shop at places like this instead of buying their plants at Costco or Walmart!

Came in late one afternoon about 30 minutes before closing and was greeted enthusiastically by the older gentleman at the register and the lady cleaning up inside, and was encouraged to wander around all the way back. Very happy to see a large number of native plants for sale and a huge area to walk around (very deceptive when driving by — much bigger than it initially appears!). The variety is not actually all that great, however, which is part of why I give them a 3 instead of 4 stars, and the prices are of course higher because they are not a chain store, and the vibe was super friendly from the first two I encountered. However, the knowledge base is really lacking — first I pointed at an indoor plant and asked if it was a variety of a prayer plant (it was pretty sad looking) and she seemed to not have any idea (nor checked to see if they had any — they’re a fairly common plant). Then I asked if they had any manzanitas in stock or coming soon, and another guy at the register next to the older man interjected actually tried to tell me that they don’t grow well here! Umm, not true — they are a northwest native and they are all OVER the city! It was a really awkward conversation the whole way through with this younger guy at the register — it went from a happy conversation about gardening to where, as someone else mentioned in an earlier review, I felt condescended to. So, while I’m glad it’s here and fairly close to where we live, and might stop in occasionally, it won’t be my número uno go-​to place. But for the basics, i’ll give ‘em another chance.

Go here if you’d like to berated and talked down to. That is unless you are also a 60+ year old man (which I am not.) I have worked and been a patron of several plant nurseries in the Portland area and I have never experience the gruff and rude service I experiences here. Don’t go here. You can get the exact same products and great plants pretty much anywhere else and you won’t be yelled at because when you were given directions you took a wrong turn. Screw this place.

I was driving all the way to Portland Nursery for years before I discovered Marbott’s in my back yard. This deceptively large little nursery is a tad on the pricey side, but the selection, convenience and helpful staff make up for it. gardener’s tip: also stop at Oregon Decorative Rock, only a block away. get that street appeal on!

This place is more for casual gardeners; if you are into rare and exotics, this place might not be for you.
Outdoor plant prices were alright but indoor plants were a little bit pricy.

Great selection and good help. Innocent credit card error was fixed instantly and pleasantly. I was reimbursed and given a free plant.

Unfortunately, I will not be back. I had a good experience the fist time except for the fact that I was up-​sold 3 really expensive tomato cages. I decided that 17 dollars was too much for tomato cage that costs 3 – 5 dollars elsewhere.
When I came back to return the item I was told to restock the item myself and do my shopping. When done I returned to get my refund. I was told that there would be a restocking fee even though I paid cash.
I laughed and smiled. He was not kidding. In fact he seemed angry that I was returning an item. I tried to discuss how this was not reasonable since I had spent hundreds in the last week and the $ 2.75 he was going to charge me would not replace my future business and referrals.
He said to my face he did not care, did not want my business, or my future referrals. He knew how to run a successful business and I was not a customer he wanted. Ouch. I respectfully paid it and left upset that I would have to travel further to find another local business that appreciated my loyalty.

I’ve been coming here for fifteen years, since I moved to NE Portland, and in that time I’ve only had one plant fail. The selection is really great for plants that are successful in the NW, and for quite a bit of exotic stuff as well. The family is always on hand to answer questions, their vegetable starts are amazing, and their hanging baskets can’t be matched. I agree with some other comments that things could be better marked, but I’d rather have healthy plants than bar-​coded inventory.
As for price, come *on* people! You really do get what you pay for. My brother was shopping for hanging baskets and balked a little at the $ 30 price tag at Marbotts (though he did get one). We went to Lowes afterward, and their baskets were $ 10 cheaper, but not as healthy, interesting, or vibrant as the ones at Marbotts. I was shopping for clematis, and the one I bought at Marbotts was cheaper and WAY healthier than the ones at Lowes.
If shopping local is important to you, it doesn’t get more local than this!

I love the low-​key vibe at Marbott’s. Not the cheapest in town, but a pleasant, family-​run business. They answer all my questions and are very helpful, plus I love their plants. They don’t have everything I want (fruit trees, summer-​blooming jasmine anyone?) but what they got I like a lot.

I love that Marbotts is so close to home. We were referred to this place after talking to a friend. I feel much better supporting a family owned business rather than going to Home Depot. We can always count on getting solid feedback on what to buy from the owner, who can be found watering plants and offering a joke or helpful advice. On our last visit he steered us away from buying the wrong plant after sharing some information about our backyard. That poor plant would have died had he not offered to help.
Marbotts is my first stop when searching for new plants. If you like helpful service, healthy plants, or to support a local biz, this probably the place for you. I am going back tomorrow!

Waking up to the sun this morning, my husband and I had an itch to find things for the garden so we decided to go Nursery hopping in our area. Having researched the establishments closest to our location we left armed with a list of 5 places we had intended to visit.
Being open at 8:00 AM, Marbott’s Greenhouse and Nursery was first on our list of stops. Unfortunately, it would be our last, but I’m getting ahead of myself…
At first glance, Marbott’s immediately looked aesthetically pleasing and I was excited to enter. They have a nice, off street lot, and the amount of space they boast is actually quite impressive. Walking in the door, I was impressed with the look of the house plants and exotics right away. My only immediate criticism was that they don’t have half of their plants labeled with any kind of name, care instructions or prices. There are also no signs directing you to the areas that are actually open to the public.
Still, walking outside was completely overwhelming because they have a lot of exciting merchandise in the form of herbs, vegetables, flowers, ornamental grasses and groundcovers, bamboo, fruit trees, you name it.
Almost as soon as I started thinking, «I’m so glad I live so close to this place, they have such variety» — this man, I can only assume is the owner of the establishment, barreled up to us asking (in so many words) why we had not filled our baskets to the brim with his wares.
I glanced at my husband a moment, possibly to receive confirmation that I didn’t think the guy was joking in the way he said it… it was obvious that my husband and I were on the same, uncomfortable, page. So, we kind of laughed awkwardly and walked in the opposite direction, and had all but forgotten the incident… when the guy walked by us AGAIN lamenting the lack of items we had in our hands.
This time, I was more than a little annoyed because it was starting to feel like much less of a joke and more of a hard-sell…which absolutely does NOT work on me.. . but I was trying to remain positive and had more to look at so I said nothing and kept looking — with the intention of discussing it with my other half privately after we left.
When I was almost done, I saw one more building that had plants in it, but it was not well marked and did not appear to have an entrance near where we were. There was, however, a walkway further back that appeared to take you toward the entrance. We started walking back to see if the building was open when, from across the entire nursery, from way back in the back, the old man boomed at us not to proceed down the trail. Scolding us, because I believe he thought we were trying to exit without paying — I have no idea why but that was the feeling I got. I just wanted to look at the rest of the plants. At that moment, my gut told me to leave so we were headed out.
But, while walking back through the nursery, toward the front to close out, we were approached again, being lambasted for only having a handful of plants. At that point I was pissed so I essentially walked away leaving my poor husband to deal with the check out. We had our plants in a small flat cardboard box to stabilize them, but as soon as my husband paid they were removed from the flat and tossed in a paper bag. When he said he wanted to take them home in the box, he was refused.
Apparently, even after paying prices I feel were high, being criticized for not spending more money– repeatedly… being scolded, and being charged extra for the luxury of using my debit card, I didn’t spend enough to deserve a cheap cardboard box to safely carry my plants home in.
After this very uncomfortable experience, I will absolutely never go back to that establishment. I do not appreciate being guilt tripped into spending more. How dare anyone?! Who is THAT guy to assume he knows a thing about my finances and my ability to spend the kind of money he obviously expects from every single customer? He made our experience so uncomfortable and upset up so much that even though we had planned to go to several other places we ended up just going home because the mood was absolutely killed.
Thanks for nothing Marbott’s.
