Intro and Intermediate coursework in drawing and painting. Classes emphasize experimentation and expression. All classes are taught by Phil Sylvester, well known artist and teacher, whose unique approach to instruction reflects 35 years of experience both making and teaching art.

History

Established in 1991.

After serving as Director of Academic at Oregon School of Design, where he taught for ten years, Phil Sylvester founded the small, independent art school, The Drawing Studio. First in the Pearl District, then in a SE Portland studio off Hawthorne, The Drawing Studio finally found it’s permanent home at SE 36th and Division, where it has been the last 17 years. The studio features drawing and painting coursework taught by Sylvester, well known for his unique ability to unleash beginners’ creative voices.

Business Owner

Phil Sylvester trained at Reed College (BA mathematics), Princeton University (Master of Architecture), and Berklee College of Music before becoming a visual artist. He has taught usual art at Oregon School of Design, Lewis and Clark College, and The Drawing Studio, and has given creativity workshops for a number of major corporations. His work has been shown or is in collections in Portland, Seattle, Chicago, New York, L.A., New Orleans, Salt Lake, Hawaii, and London.
