Wish I could give zero stars. Don’t stay here. Our buddy’s jeep was broken into after «valet» parking. They just parked it on the street and took no responsibility after two windows were busted out.

From the moment we arrived the staff, valet, and personnel were beyond helpful, professional and courteous. They assisted with finding shops to repair snowboards (without asking them to), they provided many recommendations for food, nightlife, and activities.
The room was comfortable, clean, quiet with nice amenities.
Location of hotel-​perfect for someone that wants to be in walking distance to many surrounding places of entertainment, food, attractions, etc.
This is nothing they could control but our car was broken into in the garage during the night (minimal items stolen). Obviously this is bad, but the way the team at this establishment handled EVERYTHING was beyond expectations!!! Details– they politely called our room early in the am to notify us of the incident– beyond apologetic.
–They filed the police report for us.
— They called many repair shops, located one that could repair 2 windows right then!
–They filed the crime report to the valet service.
–They hired a luxury car to pick up our other friends from the airport.
–complimentary breakfast for 4.
–complimentary valet for 2 vehicles.
We really only had to drive the vehicle to the shop and the rest was covered by the Sentinel.
Something out of the hotel’s control (the thief that broke out of windows in our vehicle) was obviously a bad situation but the hotel leadership and every employee I encountered made this situation great.
Overall– one of the best hotel experiences I’ve ever had.

Love it… well be back! Nice room, It was a great choice and a great location. Great service, fast to try and BUT they couldn’t get our fire place fixed. Love the old time feel. They got us in early… and best of all the DUCKs Beat USC! Go Ducks!

Love this hotel for so many reasons. I wouldn’t mind it if I could call it home for a month or two!
The décor is very memorable. IF you’ve checked it out you know, you won’t forget it. Its gorgeous. We had a corner room up top which was amazingly cozy. Everything about the place is fantastic.
Would for sure recommend it to someone asking about Portland. It has been our favorite place we’ve stayed so far.

Stayed here for two nights and loved it! Initially had to wait for our room to b ready because we reached early! Great hotel, good location and loved the suite! Just one issue since it was an early check in! But overall an awesome stay! Remember there check in is at 4pm!

Only stayed here for one night and I stay at a lot of hotels. Typically I stay at Kimpton brand hotel in Portland when I come, but this time they were all booked so I wanted to try something different. The Sentinel looked like the best option. It was a great choice and a great location. It is located in the downtown core and walking distance to all of the newest restaurants in Portland. Once you walk in, it has a very unique style. You see a front desk with a book shelf underneath it. There are a lot of wood and a historical building feel. Once I checked in, at first finding the elevator was a little confusing, the front desk guy should have pointed out where I needed to go. I ended up going up the wrong elevator, got locked in a stairwell and had to walk down five floors to get back to the front desk to see what is going on. Apparently there are two sets up elevators and I needed to take the one in the back. Minor mistake by the front desk.
The rooms were very clean and nice. Nothing that sticks out at me in the room, like a cool design feature or anything that popped out at me. It was well done and very clean. I was only there for one night and was not able to explore, however I heard they have some pretty cool spaces here as this is a historical hotel. Great hotel and I would check it out if you want a cool place to stay in Portland with a fantastic location.

Outstanding birthday celebration! It all started with a simple telephone call asking about overnight parking ($ 39), check in time (3 – 4:00), and could they make us birthday dinner reservations at Jakes (Sentinel guests treated like VIP). A simple call, answered by Dave Fry, made for a spectacular celebration.
Upon check in Kira greeted us with a genuine smile and welcome. She showed us the property, walked us to the elevator and flashed us once again that genuine smile. We were told we were on the sixth floor and there would be complimentary snacks and beverages.
When we entered our room we were in total shock!!! Right there on the living room table was a note addressed to me by Dave Frye that the Sentinel had upgraded our room to the Bridgetown Parlor Suite for my birthday. The colors, the rooms, the fireplace, the views, the bathroom!!! All top notch!!!
If you are looking for a place to celebrate do not hesitate to go downtown and stay here!!!

Unbelievably rude staff, what a complete disappointment! I’ve never encountered such a rude group of people in the hospitality industry. My room, a suite on the 6^th floor has a hole in the ceiling with a small fire sprinkler peeking out. Completely amateur, tacky and unprofessional.
The wireless in the hotel and in the meeting rooms is a compete fail, if you can acquire an ip address you will be dropped 5 minutes later. The carpeting in the conference room was stained and just plain nasty. Never again will I stay in this hobble, tacky hotel tacky staff. At Over $ 400 per night this place is a joke!

I would never, ever recommend this hotel to anybody. Not even with a gun to my head. We reserved a terrace suite on the 6^th floor for the weekend. Arriving from the airport, they put us in a regular room on a different floor. I had called in advance and asked them to have a bottle of chilled champagne waiting for us (romantic weekend), they had not remembered. When I went down and told them they put us in the wrong room, they told us they had already booked everything on the sixth floor. Well no shit, they booked it for us and we’d paid in advance. They did not move us until the next afternoon. The mood had been ruined. The room they put us in was in disrepair and under some type of construction. Absolutely deplorable and grimy with no patio. Our romantic weekend was ruined. This was our fourth time here and they didn’t seem to care. They delivered us champagne, not chilled. Hardly wanted to drink it at that point. The next morning I found a scribbled apology note with my name misspelled. The grimy room they put us in was not even cheap, they charged us almost as much for it as they charged us for the suite on the sixth floor, at that point I felt it should be comped but the front desk clearly disagreed. I have no clue how this place is still in business. We will never stay here again and I strongly suggest you only stay here if you cannot find other accommodations.

Staying here right now. Some good points and some fundamental flaws, considering the cost…
Nice room on 5^th floor. Tasteful and bed comfortable. Old windows and quite small. No spare toilet roll and not enough creamer for two coffees.
Front desk staff were nice and we were able to check in early.
Doorman uninterested and we were offered no help with bags.
The big flaws… they had very loud maintenance work going on in the lobby on a Friday pm between 3 and 6. Couldn’t sit in main bar as too loud. Very odd time to schedule works.
…got back from dinner tonight and walked into hotel bar. Was told we could not enter the bar from the hotel and had to go outside to get in. I explained we were hotel guests however told to go outside. That really rubbed me up the wrong way so we didn’t bother and went back to room.
That should not happen in a hotel ever. Really poor service. I called and apparently the bar is not part of the hotel…
Conclusion: if you’re happy to pay a lot of money simply for a nice room and very little else, this is your place. Not great value for money.

SPEND THE EXTRA $ BOOK 6TH FLOOR
We looooooved our stay at Sentinel! Beautiful décor you step back into the Gatsby era here. Artistic photographs and gorgeous décor. The staff are friendly, the beds are divine and they even have SALT & STRAW ICE CREAM delivery!!!
We stayed on the 6^th floor which gives you access to the «Room in the Corner» a small lounge area with complimentary snacks, coffee and refreshments. Not just coffee and tea but Sanpellagrino juice, Fiji Water, Coconut Water, high end yogurt and snacks!
I went to the Nines Hotel the day before for a meeting and was impressed with their décor but the price was ridiculous high. I chose Sentinel first because of the review on their beds (very important to me). My king bed was heavenly, if you ask they have a pillow bar too. Hotel is walking distance to everything. I will come here again for sure next time I’m in Portland!

Loving this hotel me and my husband are here for our 19^th wedding anniversary and everyone here is so nice. The rooms are nice and we are loving the patio with the fireplace and all the food trucks around the area. Will definitely come back here

Excellent hotel! The staff is AMAZING! The service is OUTSTANDING! Very dog friendly! My dog was soooo happy! I definitely recommend!

Came home, after dinner 10:30 wanted a drink. We are a couple over 40. Denied entrance to the Jackknife the lobby bar in the hotel, actually we were kicked out and around the front of the hotel, to be refused entry by churlish bouncers. Rude, officious dicks.
Interestingly we have a family event here in a month, have eight rooms booked. As of tonight that will not be the case.
Went for a drink around the corner at Tasty n Alders.
Extraordinary experience. The hotel receptionist herself moaned about the lessees.
Will never recommend this hotel ever to anyone.

And again! Didn’t make it to the penthouse floor this time, but was graciously accommodated when I arrived in the AM, a few hours before normal check in. Front desk remains incredibly friendly.
Umbrellas are located by the entrance and come in handy for mid-​day, springtime showers.
Highly recommend.

My stay here was nothing short of excellent. Seriously, i cannot say enough good things about my few days here. From the very friendly valet whom greeted us and took promptly helped us with our suitcase ($ 36/​night, but well worth the convenience), to the young lady at the front desk who so graciously walked us to our «private» elevator. We upgraded during check-​in to a première king corner room and i believe it was worth that extra $ 25 a night. we have a bit of city view. the room is very spacious for two people.
Every year, my girlfriend and I come to Portland for a few days to celebrate our anniversary. Last year we stayed at Hotel DeLuxe, this year, the Sentinel. The Sentinel has been a far better experience. They have ipod docs with the lighting adapters, plenty of plugs for random chargers right next to the bed. This whole hotel just reeks of subtle elegance and a certain attention to details that makes you feel you are in a country B&B but does not leave you without all the comforts techy cityslickers desire. The wi-​fi here is fantastic! I am able to remote connect to work and get a few things done, while the GF can stream netflix with no buffering!
The housekeeping is very friendly and had our room cleaned up well within an hour of our leaving it (short walk to tasty n alder). ordered salt and straw ice cream, was delivered within 15 minutes. ordered firmer pillows for the woman from their menu of pillows, was also delivered within 15 minutes. For a hotel, the guest floors are pretty quiet. We have not really heard anything from the other rooms around us other than an occasional door closing (these doors are pretty heavy).
Location, location, location. This is the perfect place for foodies going on a food tour. It is literally across the street from the food carts, super easy to go down, bring a few things back to the room to enjoy in comfort. Also, just down the street from places like Tasty N Alder, Lardo, Grassa, and Sizzling Pie. Right on a MAX line, so getting around town on Portland’s fantastic ground transportation system is easy.
This place is definitely pricier, but as far as value goes, they are right on the mark with where the other hotels in this class are and I definitely feel more appreciated here than i would at hilton or some other big chain establishment.

Wow, this place is nice, even if the new name is confusing. It doesn’t help that the signage is not very noticeable. You could pass right by and never know the splendor just on the other side of the door.
It was dark out when I arrived for an event in the early morning last week, so I almost walked right by without seeing the place. I had to check my GPS to find out that I was right in front of it. I was only there for a daytime event, so I cannot attest to the quality, comfort, or cleanliness of the guest rooms.
The inside can be described in very few words. Grand. Exquisite. Majestic. It’s like a work of art. Every placement of decoration displays aesthetic perfection.
Despite the buildings age, guests have access to modern technology like wifi, and there is a very large up-​to-​date workout room. The personnel were friendly and accommodating, which was unexpected. I would expect that type of service as a paying customer, but I was only there for a meeting.
I found few negative things to say about the Sentinel. The 100 year old elevators are a bit on the slow side. The stairs are not well marked, so it’s easy to go up the wrong stairwell if you decide not to wait for the slow elevator.

You ever have that moment you think «this hotel gets me?» Yeah, me either. Until this weekend, when I stayed at the Sentinel. It’s like a literary-​time capsule trimmed with new-​fangled trappings.
Down in the lobby (Starbucks adjacent) sits an old fashioned desk with a typewriter stocked with paper and a stack of envelopes right next to it, begging you to sit and write a letter. Even the oscillating fan seems quaint considering the place is air conditioned.
On the lobby floor also lives a bar with waffle fries (because fries are better in waffle form… if only they came with syrup) and an amazingly sweet workout room with multiple machines and weights. The machines weren’t super well kept, but they worked, which was good enough for me.
Hallways on our floor were decorated with huge images of iconic people — Mother Teresa, MLK, Hemingway. And the doors were deep green with huge brass knockers. It just looked different and classy. Clearly, this was not the Ramada Inn.
My room was huge. Like, bigger than my studio apartment huge. There was a king size bed with tons of cozy bedding. Plaid blanket — check. Lamp base made of cork with multiple outlets in it — check. Lamp base made of an owl sitting on books with usb port — check. To-​your-​door ice cream service — oh yeah, they have that too (it costs $ 6 a pint, be warned, as it’s not mentioned anywhere). The honor bar was quite reasonably priced for an in-​room bar ($ 5 for a beer).
This hotel was a luxury and a gift from someone else — not sure I would have afforded it otherwise. But it was a delightful, relaxing stay and I seriously felt like the only thing that would have made this place even more amazing would be a ten minute chair massage on call.

Alas, renamed the Sentinnel with the rooms having been redone in a more modern sense. The common rooms, lobby, and ballrooms seem the same, but now there is a new raucous bar «Jack Knife» or at least it was that night for derby days.
The rooms do seem more modernized in a dark gray and streamlined with modern bed posts like a W hotel.

This hotel was an awesome find on Priceline. It’s so unlike the other hotel rooms we frequent. It is perfectly situated in a prime area of downtown Portland, and just a short walk over to the Pearl District. I love the classic touches throughout the hotel from the lobby all the way to the room. The pictures I took did not do it justice. You should just stay here to get the charm of The Governor Hotel. And the staff are really helpful and friendly. A nice bonus we were able to check in at 11 am instead of the regular hotel check-​in time of 4 pm. Also, they ONLY have valet parking, no self-​serve parking. But street /​meter parking is cheap ($ 1.60 per hour) and you may have to move it every so often.
