Rack Attack specializes in Thule, Yakima, Saris, ProRack Whispbar and Rocky Mounts racks. We also offer DeWalt and TracRac truck & van racks, as well as Saris and Racor bike storage and parking systems. Rack Attack also sells and installs Curt trailer hitches.

History

Established in 2000.

Before there was Rack Attack Portland, there was Rock Solid Racks. First in Tualatin, then in Portland at E Burnside and 28^th, then later at 21^st and E Burnside, Rock Solid was the original rack store. Along came Rack Attack in the summer of 2000 and opened the Downtown/Goose Hollow store.

While demand for racks was strong through the early part of the decade, Rack Attack decided to close the Eastside store to focus on the location near PGE Park. That shop has been jamming ever since.

With a highly trained staff who all love to bike, boat, hunt & fish, ski, snowboard and be in the outdoors, Rack Attack has found success by being out and about in the Portland outdoor community. You can find us at ski shows, charity rides, and river clean-ups, and we support local organizations like the Bicycle Transportation Alliance and the Northwest Trail Alliance.

Scott C.

Manager

Scott C has been with Rack Attack since August 2001. Starting out in sales & installation, Scott worked his way through the company acting as a logistics/mailorder manager and is now a project manager working on opening new stores and running events.

Commuting by bike is the way to go for Scott, and after work he’s out racing sailboats or soaking up Portland’s nightlife. Scott holds an MBA from Portland State University.

Went to this location first because it was the closest and I needed a key for some really old school ski racks. The guys were attentive and friendly, and when they found that they had neither the parts or the master key, they called the other store to be sure they had the correct parts before sending me across the river. I appreciated the thoroughness of their service.

We bought a rack system, took it home, waited to have it installed went to have it installed not all the parts were there ended up having to pay even more for parts that should of been there. And on top of it it was not the rack system we wanted. Our fault for not buying the system in our local community. Sorry would not recommend this place.

I purchased my Whispbar racks from Rack Attack a few years ago. I traded in my 2012 Kia Sorento for a newer model (2014). I had trouble getting my rack to fit and called the Yakima customer hotline for assistance. Just received the most excellent customer service experience in long time from John H. at Whisper/Yakima. It was truly concierge-level customer service. First class all the way! It’s one thing to produce a great product, but this after-purchase experience is above and beyond. I can’t recommend this company highly enough. It’s so rare to receive this level of service. Bravo!

I live in Corvallis and I couldn’t find anywhere local to install a hitch for my Subaru; the Subaru dealer parts and install were way too expensive. I called Rack Attack on a Thursday, they had the hitch I wanted in stock and were able to give me an appointment for the time I requested on Saturday. They did the install in an hour. Great service, good pricing, super convenient, highly recommended.

Placed an order from the Bay Area for a Yakima basket. They called me and let me know it was on backorder and if I still wanted to proceed. I told them I needed it sooner than 2 weeks so they spent about 15 mins with me on the phone going over possible alternatives. Politely answered all my questions and were very helpful. In the end I ended up getting a better roof basket than I originally ordered… for the same price. Completed the order and hung up.
Then, 15 mins later they call me back and tell me that because its a new item and the box is bigger, that the shipping is a little more expensive and were just calling to check if that was ok with me. I told them of course. Really great customer service from these guys. They will be my go-to company for anything rack related from now on.

I took a broken rack into the shop for repairs, they looked up the warranty info for me and swapped out the rack for a new one that fits my future car better! Little did I know the Yakima racks have such awesome warranties! These guys made the swap seamless and hassle free!

They do have a lot of equipment and the installation was completed in the time frame they suggested. But, after going over what I wanted in complete detail several times, they installed the completely wrong items and their knowledge of pricing and how items work was hugely lacking.
Everything installed was completely WRONG! These guys need to spend some time getting trained properly on the equipment they sell. A very frustrating experience. And they couldn’t even correct the problem. When I tried to explain what the problem was to other employee, I just got shrugged off.

We recently moved from Portland to Northern California. Once here, we got into kayaking to enjoy on all the nearby lakes. We own a 2002 VW Eurovan with a Westfalia poptop and we had to rely on a friend to haul our kayaks around in his truck as we had no rack installed.. We knew Rack Attack in Portland had a great reputation and called and when we described our needs, we were told Curtis was ‘the man to talk too’… and he was! After a thorough phone discussion on methodology of installation on our particular van, he sent us part by part quotes for both Thule and Yakima systems.
Well 1400 miles round trip was a long way to go so we called every possible installer in a 300 mile radius of our home in Oroville. We found all sorts of suppliers but the installers were another matter. None sounded sure of themselves regarding the method of install and none had done more then one or two. We already knew that thru the roof was the preferred method but also the most difficult one to get right. We were discouraged. So we called the specialty shop in Denver where we purchased or Eurovan, JBD Imports. John said he has all his racks put on by Rack Attack in Denver… That was all we needed to know. We made an appointment with Curtis, he confirmed all parts in stock, and were waiting for us at the time of the appointment. And as we expected, he did a TERRIFIC job on the installation.
We’ve made several trips in the past month to some places a few hundred miles away, with our kayaks onboard. Our rack is stable, aerodynamic and just what we wanted.

After going to ReRack it was refreshing to get friendly service and all our questions answered without an eye roll. Even though they don’t suggest self instal they answered all my husbands questions on how to put on our Yakima tracks. Plus the tracks were a killer deal! The tracks went in great and if we need anything else for our Prius we’ll be back.

I recently purchased a Sport rack foldinghitch basket carrier from this vendor. Upon correct assembly, I discovered one of the two pin positions was not lining up, preventing the pin from passing through into the locking position. The holes are nearly half a pin diameter off. When I showed the vendor salesperson the flaw, he chose to shrug and inform me that’s what to expect for a price point like this unit ($ 160). Not much for customer service, in my book. No offer to assist with warranty (less than 30 days since purchase). So, I am left with hashing the item up to fix the problem. I doubt I’ll be back there for any more business.

Fast. Efficient. No BS sales approach.
And when I came back 2 days later to say that I wanted a bigger rack, it was easy and my replacement was on within the hour.
I don’t how much more you can say about a place like this. The staff was relaxed and low pressure. Maybe too low-pressure for those who want that fast-talking, sucking-up-but-not-really condescension that often comes with buying any kind of specialty equipment.
This is not that kind of place. This is much better.

My permanent base rack installed on my Yaris on 9÷29÷2012 by Curtis, Installation Specialist. He was professional and took time before the install to address any questions and concerns that I had. The installation took about 1.5−2 hours. The install of the rack and fairing looks good on the car.
After after driving back to Seattle, I noticed the small black plugs on the fairing were installed wrong. I emailed Rack Attack for some spare parts to fix the small issue and they mailed up the replacement plugs right away.
The total cost was $ 550 for the permanent rack and fairing install. While it was little pricey, I’m glad I came here to have a professional perform the install. I would definitely come back here again.

I have had several racks including hitches put on several different vehicles from both this location and the Denver location and I couldn’t be happier. Made several modifications to one car for a permanent rack, which has stood severe punishment and abuse. The sales man and installer were incredibly knowledgeable. Saved me lots of time and most likely money if I tried to install myself.
I would of given rack attack six stars but I brought in my moms prius to carry 7 boats, two bikes, a trailer, and a pop up camper with a cargo box for 15 pairs of skis and snowboards for all her friends. but they couldn’t make it work and have the same towing, weight capacity as my tundra. Couldn’t figure out why… ridiculous.

Rack Attack Rocks! These guys provided outstanding customer service!
Equipped my ride with all that i needed to get me to the mountain, river, trails, even the construction site. I’ve hauled boards and work ladders on the Yakima roof system, Love this roof rack!
I’ve had the rack for about half a year now and have never encountered any problems at all. Rick Maxa help out with the installation.
I’ll definitely be returning back to Rack Attack. Keep it up Guys!

After having the worst experience over at ReRack, I came in here, and Matt was extremely helpful! He had a set of used towers and gave me credit for the old ones that he later trashed anyway because they were so old and Yakima does not make parts for these anymore! He also installed my rack and gave me pointers on removal, all free of charge. I definitely felt like I was being taken care of. These guys turned my frustrating rack buying experience into a great one.
I will for sure give my business to these guys and not the other down the street (cough cough re rack)!!!
