Mittleman JCC

I appreciate this place and to have it in the neighborhood. I love the pool and I am in either the aqua aerobics class or one of the warm water therapy pool several times a week. the instructor Holly is great! The JCC is clean, plenty of parking and has very friendly staff. Love the sauna!

My son has been taking swim lessons here for the past few months. Drastic improvement! The teachers are a bit on the young side. But most are pretty good. A balance of no nonsense and nurturing. Maybe even a bit too nurturing and not enough instruction. But my son loves it. The larger pool is for bigger kids lessons and there is small warmer pool for the younger ones.
It’s clean. There is plenty of equipment to practice with if I get into the pool with him after class. The lanes are divided for other people to do laps.
Will definitely continue here.

Great place to play floor hockey! If you want to join great group of guys, please come Mondays and Wednesdays 7:00 — 9:00 PM. We play floor hockey at MJCC since 1978!
Floor hockey is a great workout, and all you need is sneakers. We will provide you with a stick for the first time. And it’s fun!!!

I was slightly terrified as I walked in. Jolting flashbacks of that snapping, crunching sensation of breaking my ankle 3 years prior on a similar indoor turf field had me thinking of excuses to leave as soon as we arrived. And then I sucked it up and had a great time.
This is a solid indoor soccer facility. It’s the nicest fake turf I’ve ever put my sneaker to, a perfect temperature for running around having an asthma attack, and seems impeccably maintained. The players and ref of the intramural league I hesitantly joined turned out to be super friendly and welcoming, too.
Only drawback is the location — it’s just slightly out of the way from downtown. Oh yeah, and the tiny cups for water are truly tiny. Bring your Nalgene.

This is a great field to play soccer on– it’s a decent size, it’s temperature controlled, and has high ceilings. There’s even a seating area if you want to bring your fans. Overall a solid place to play, though the league I’m currently in seems really small, and I feel like we’re playing the same teams over and over.
The bathroom situation is a pain– either hope that the PortaPotty is unlocked and go in there in the cold or heat, or take 10 minutes to bring your ID to the main building (if it’s open) and use their facility. Otherwise no complaints!

This is an update to my 2011 review so you might want to read that review first. Winter 2012 — 2013 saw a big reduction in swim team rentals. This was wonderful and there was an increase in new adult lap swimmers coming and using the pool after work. There is a new aquatics director and it still remains to be seen if the new aquatics director will continue to support the adult lap swimming community. It’s too soon to judge this new director’s performance.
The school swim team has recently bought a new float toy. For the young children this is a marvelous toy that they can jump on a play on and it is very large and takes up most of the pool to the MJCC’s credit the toy is only in the pool for limited hours so far one Sunday a month. But the aquatics director has myopically not considered that there is a contingent of adult lap swimmers that show up the last few hours of the day on weekends to swim. The toy has been scheduled to go in the water 3 — 5 pm which wouldn’t be so bad except the pool closes at 5:45 on weekends. This puts all the adult lap swimmers in the pool the last 45 minutes of the day competing for the narrow swim lanes, and that’s if the pool staff can have a zillion children and a gigantic pool float out of the water by 5 sharp. It has ruined the availability of the pool for adult lap swimmers on this particular day, and if you work during the week, your weekends are sometimes the only time you can get in a really good workout.
It would have been easy to shift the time for the float up an hour, and leave a two hour window for the adult swimmers. The director says they will move it up ½ hour in July — that is after being told about the problem in March. Not sure why it takes 4 months to fix a problem that should have been anticipated in the beginning.
To the MJCC’s credit, when there was a cracked pip recently, they drained the pool and fixed it in 5 days. I would hate to see that water bill. But due to their prompt attention to this potentially very serious problem we still have a very nice pool to swim in and the down time was kept to a minimum with email alerts and updates if you subscribed to the notice service.
By comparison, a jet nozzle on the whirlpool came out resulting in reduced pressure to all the jets. This was reported two months ago and it still isn’t fixed. How hard is it to fix a nozzle when you can fix an Olympic pool in 5 days? So some improvement in the speed of addressing issues when things break is still needed but over all they do a very good job. This is a fairly minor issue and the whirlpool is still functional and usable.
FYI Marissa who posted the comment is a marketing director at the MJCC. I have never met her and I don’t believe she uses the pool and really knows first hand what is going on with the pool that might effect lap swimmers. Overall the MJCC does a very good job and the rates are affordable. They did reduce the renting to swim teams and that really helped the lap swimming. Like I said in the beginning there is a new aquatics director and it still remains to be seen if this will be come a 5 star facility in terms of what it offers for lap swimmers. Being over 50, I have been to a lot of gyms and clubs throughout my life. I love the JCC. I use the fitness room and pools. Great locker room. Locks that you code yourself, so no lock or key is needed. Two pools, one lap and another warm pool for exercise or just de-​stressing. Pools have exercise classes in them. Steam room, sauna and whirl pool, in both the male and female locker room. You don’t have to wear clothes since it’s not co-​ed. Towels are supplied, hair dryers and more. The fitness room is large and bright. Lots of equipment that is kept in good shape. Never overly crowded. People do their own thing and no one seems to care what anyone else looks like or is doing. Some machines have TV’s, but there are TV’s throughout the gym. You must have your own head phones. There is a café. Classes come with the membership. Lots’ of youth events, but they don’t interfer with the adult events. I am not a kid person. The JCC is more than happy to let you have a day pass to try out the facility. Lots of membership specials. $ 15 a day if you don’t join. The hours are great and they are open at least ½ day on most holidays. They do close for special Jewish days/​holidays. PS-​You don’t have to be Jewish to be a member. I’m not.

I have been going to the J for almost a year now, and it has been a great experience! They have an amazing (spacious and not crowded!!) fitness facility, with well-​kept machines, a good number of group fitness classes, and even free weights and barbells. The locker rooms are always clean and amazing, as each (men and women’s) has their own hot tub, sauna and steam room. Also, they have warm and cool water pools. I have yet to use the pools, but they look much cleaner than most aquatic facilities I have been to, so I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before I catch an aquarobics class. I will never go back to 24-​Hour fitness again!

I have to say the reason I joined the JCC was the gym. I enjoyed going to work out at a non-​meat market and still be able to get Kosher food upstairs at the café. Some of the members are not very friendly but the place is kept clean and I enjoyed the steam room.
I got spoiled by the lockers, it is an odd thing to say but it is true. I mean I go to a great gym now but the size of the locker and the services at the gym make me long for the days when did attend MJCC.
I was able to start taking racquetball classes and even at one point had one-​on-​one lessons for a reasonable price. There were services I never used such as the soccer field, the rock climbing wall, the pool or even some of yoga classes. I think that if I were to go back I would use the gym more than I did before.
I know the school attached would make coming to the JCC at certain times a bear but it is well worth it to give MJCC a chance. I would still attend if I lived in the Portland area.
I do have to say, I had to some issues with them processing my payments which seemed to be an accounting issue not a gym issue. That would be the reason for 4 not 5 stars.

I’ve been a member of the MJCC for a few months now, and overall, I’m really happy with this gym. They have clean and user-​friendly locker rooms, sauna, steam room, and their facilities offer something for everyone (b-​ball, raquetball, climbing wall, pool). Their fitness room is not all that big and doesn’t have the newest machines, but it does the job. I especially like the warm water pool.
I’ve taken some fitness classes, and in general, they’re enjoyable. The instructors are friendly and encouraging. My only complaint is that the rooms are a bit… stark, compared to some yoga studios (like Om Base). This is ok when you’re in an aerobics class flailing your arms to ridiculous music, but doesn’t provide a serene environment for a quiet yoga class.
The other thing to note here is that the average age of the members is quite high… This means that the classes may not provide a really hard workout for some people because they cater to an older audience. For me, that’s not really an issue, but it’s something to consider.

This review is for the indoor soccer facility.
Comparing this to the indoor soccer facility we had, this one beats it without even trying hard. Big field, AC, high ceilings what more can i ask for right? there is two things i would ask for and this is the reason this place only has 3 stars. No bathroom, man that sucks when you gots to go pee! No lockeroom. i apologize to the people who had to watch me change my shirt in front of them. I know it’s not a pretty site to see but i had nowhere else to do it.
