Laurelhurst Market

Well, well, well. What a coinky-​dink! My first review of this wonderful eating and drinking establishment was exactly 7 years ago. To be fair, the spousal unit and I have been out of town for about 5 of those years so that accounts for the lack of updates but, here we go.
We were in town beginning our re-​integration process and needed a light dinner before an evening out. We headed through the full dining room to the full bar and were immediately greeted by one of the bartenders, told it would be a few minutes, given water, had drink orders taken and a few minutes later were seated with drinks in one hand and food menus in the other.
Here goes, served with an order of grilled bread:
1.) charcuterie plate (small), they make everything in house. pâté, terrine, beef salami, mortadella, pickled veggies, mootard. Perfect.
2.) fried oysters (3). I could have eaten a dozen but I need PDX house prices to go up a bit more.
3.) a plate of warm asparagus with lardons and vinaigrette and a white sauce that I can’t remember. very good (eat your veggies)
4.) the surprise of the night, Smoked oyster mushrooms. MORE!
Their pinot by the glass (Brooks Runaway Red) was perfect.
We miss PDX so much and can’t wait (soon) to get back.

The meal was completely amazing. We had the charcuterie and braised marrow bone, then I had the wagyu coulotte steak, and it was so tender and flavorful. The vegetables were perfectly done. But this was the third time we’ve been there and the service was not up to the usual standards. The server forgot one of our side dishes and the after dinner drinks were served long after the desserts had been finished, instead of arriving with the desserts. It was a busy night, but it’s always busy there. Minor details, but it cost a star on this review.

We went to Laurelhurst last night for dinner, and had a wonderful time. Larry was our server, and he seemed to know exactly when to check in on us, without being one of those servers who comes over right in the middle of your chew to see how the meal is. He was super friendly and I appreciated his opinions with the food and drink.
We started with the marrow bones. I am glad we tried it, definitely buttery and oily, but not really our jam.
Next we had the harvest salad, a blend of raw, grilled and pickled vegetables. It was excellent and refreshing, perfect for a summer palette. I also ordered a cocktail with pear brandy, Heir Apparent, and it went down super smooth. The brandy flavor hit my taste buds immediately and finished with a strong cinnamon mouth feel. Loved it.
We had to get steak, and tried the rosewood wagyu culotte. We ordered it medium rare, tender and juicy. The outside pieces had almost a jerky texture, and the steak was topped with little pieces of bacon and potatoes. Overall an excellent meal.
We would go back and visit again, thank you for the lovely bacon!
Plus, if you visit for dinner, you can receive 10% off at the butcher after your meal! We forgot to take advantage this time, but we will next time :)

Amazing service and incredible food.
My boyfriend and I drove by everyday to and from work and he always commented that he’d love to go out to dinner sometime there.
Made a reservation a month in advance for his birthday online. In the notes section I mentioned that it’d be our first time dining there and it was for a birthday. Finally, when the day came, I forgot I even made the comment. The drinks, dinner and service was amazing… But to top it of, the waitress brought by a small package of bacon with a special birthday note on top. It made it such a unique and special experience. 5 stars again and again!

Excellent food, excellent service. I ordered the wedge chopped salad, ribeye and whatever the house drink is with the whiskey and smoked ice. The only thing that would cause me to give them less than a five star rating was the salad dressing on the wedge. Not sure why, but it was kind of bland. However that was the only part of the meal that was «meh». Amazing ribeye steak, excellent compliment with the candied jalapeños and avocado. On the whiskey drink, how did they make smoked ice cubes? Impressive. Service was spot on from the time I walked in the door. Prices are reasonable. I’ll be back.

Probably the best lunch I have ever had!
I ordered the #3 sandwich which had salami, ham, provolone cheese, pepperonicini and red onion. I have never tasted any sandwich so fresh and well-​prepared before!
What really set this lunch apart from most is the «side lot» area outside of the market. Their chicken is to die for! Apparently they just started up, and are headed towards success! I would definitely go back for that chicken again!
Overall I was completely satisfied with my lunch and look forward to coming back!

Maybe it was we had eaten so much during the day, maybe it was technically 11:45 PM back home where we took off from earlier in the day, maybe we got too much. Whatever the case was, we left lots on our plate and left feeling a little disappointed.
I was very excited for Laurelhurst Market. It was the one big sit down dinner I knew I was going to have for sure in Portland. I read so many great things. And it was perfectly placed in the Kerns neighborhood, down along Burnside where I knew my first night in town was heading.
Made reservations and was seated right away. Our waitress was very friendly. And the place looked very nice. We ordered up some cocktails, and began deciding what to eat. The drinks were excellent. No issues there. They also have a solid beer selection.
Up first for dinner was the bone marrow. The best thing I ate here, easily. It was a home run. It came out with a warm pretzel, which was perfect for it. It’s a bit of a heavy app, but I can usually eat. Next came everything at once, and maybe we over did as we said, but if you know from my reviews I can eat. I heard amazing things about the steak frites, and it was good. Just not amazing. The fries were average at best. And more of them came with the burger, which I didn’t care for at all. There was so many fries. Too many fries. We also heard how great the onion rings were, but those were subpar. The saving grace of the sides was the mac and cheese, but once again it was good, not great.
I guess our expectations were high, and our eyes wanted more than our stomachs could take, but nothing was that rememberable besides the bone marrow. I’d say if you were around, give it a shot but keep your expectations in check.

This is definitely one of my favorite go to spots when you want a steak but not in a fancy-​chain like restaurant. The food here has always been consistent for me! Not only are the cuts of meat delicious, but their sides are also great. We had the mac and cheese, bone marrow, potatoes, and asparagus. For the entrees, we had the Ribeye, dry aged bone-​in NY, and the steak frites.
The service is always great, as our server made sure that our cocktails came out quickly as well as our appetizers. The only downfall… it can be hard to get a reservation for a big group of people.

This is by far THE best steak house we have experienced in the Portland Metro area. several other wonderful offerings as well besides steaks. like killer mac & cheese, fois gras, bone marrow and a few delicious specialty sauces. wow, what a find, we had their steaks 2 weeks ago from their butcher shop and grilled them at home — incredible flavor & tenderness.
when we decided to try their rib eye steak in the restaurant we were delighted to learn that the night’s special was a 40 OZ rib-​eye bone in steak for 2 !!! Wow. just look at the picture below! btw, service was TOP NOTCH. such attention to detail and very friendly.
we watched several other dishes being served to tables around us and will just have to go back and try them all. hard to get a reservation on Saturdays so plan accordingly.

There are a lot of sandwich shops in Portland that folks my argue are the best, but I think Laurelhurst Market is a bit of a hidden gem where you’ll find Portland’s best sandwiches. I unfortunately have not been in to try their dinner menu — but anytime I am in the area during lunch it’s impossible not to stop in. I don’t think I have ever seen the same sandwich on the menu so every time is a new experience.
As this place is a butcher shop as well (sorry vegans) you’re always guaranteed delicious meats on your sammys.
The atmosphere inside is great and the few tables outside are perfect on a sunny day. Staff is always awesome.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? The food here is outstanding. We had the pork chop and the steak and greens. We both usually order medium rare but the server said the chef was recommending medium so we went with that, thinking the chef knows his stuff. I regret that choice. It was still very good, but we prefer medium rare. Stand your ground if that happens to you. Those onion rings were delicious– pretty sure they are breaded with beignet batter. The chocolate orange pudding with toasted marshmallow was small and the perfect light finish.
The only other negative I experienced (other than that fail on the steak) was that the dining room is really noisy and bustling. That’s just what it is, but if you are looking for a more intimate feel for your $ 150 meal (that’s what we spent for 2 people), then this might not be your first choice.

This review is specifically for the butcher shop side of Laurelhurst Market. And if it somehow isn’t obvious from the word «butcher,» vegetarians should steer clear. But for those of us who enjoy a more carnivorous lifestyle, Laurelhurst has a beautiful case of steaks and pâté, all kinds of bacon, and a variety of sausages to take home and toss on the grill.
It’s also one of my favorite sandwich shops, offering more than a handful of options on the menu plus build-​your-​own. Today the choices included a corned beef sandwich, a pastrami sandwich, ham plus salami with spicy mayo and shredded lettuce on ciabatta, turkey plus bacon with pickles, arugula, cheddar and herb mayo on sourdough, among others. Each comes with a handful of chips, and the ingredients are so good you can pretty much taste the quality.
Not only that, but while everyone else is out for brunch on the weekend, you just might have the place to yourself, whether sitting at a table in their bright and spacious dining room or grabbing a sunny table outside.

Excellent meat plus excellent bread equals excellent sandwich!!!

This is more of a lunch review as I came here after going to Target to get a belt. Very small parking lot but they had some good sandwich options here.
The sandwiches were $ 9 for a full sandwich and they even offered half sandwiches too. I wasn’t too hungry but I ordered a full sandwich thinking that half was too small. Weeeeell, it wasn’t small so great value for the dollar. In terms of what I got, I believe that I got ham and turkey and my brother got corned beef. Watching them assemble the sandwich, they sliced the meat off fresh from their cold case for my sandwich and the meat was very generous. Bread also was fresh and chewy.
We also tried the charcuterie plate to share that included five meats and some pickling veggies. The only thing missing was the availability of draft beers and cocktails. I think at lunch time, the bar was closed as it didn’t seem like an option.
I had some really good food during my stay in Portland and the Laurelhurst Market sandwich was the hands down winner. If their sandwich was this good, then I can’t wait to try one of their steaks.

This review is for dining month menu items.
Main course: braised beef or was it pork shoulder? Regardless it was extremely tender! The moment you push your fork into it everything just falls apart beautifully and it is extremely savory!
Appetizer: sausage stuffed crimini mushrooms served with micro greens. Really nice balance in the salad! Savory but has a good amount of acid in the dressing.
End: almond pretzel shortbread served with tiramisu. Good balance, wish there were more cookies served !
Really thankful we started dining month off at this place. I love that this is a portland thing, it’s great for experiencing different types of cuisine but budget friendly! $ 30.00 for a three course meal. If you haven’t heard about portland dining month go google now and head here !
Our servers were funny and attentive. The specials they were offering for a 32 oz grass fed steak sounded amazinggg but that’s for another time.

Absolutely amazing. Romantic atmosphere at night, perfect for a smaller gathering or special occasion. They do have a bar, but we sat in the restaurant.
We came here for our anniversary dinner and loved every second of it! We arrived a few min early and they were able to seat us early, which was great. Our server was so sweet and wished us a happy anniversary and even gave the both of us free Proseco! And Let me tell you, it was delish. Looking at the menu we tried to figure out which one it was, and it actually wasn’t even on the menu, how sweet.
Our food? So amazing, just look at the pics. The piece of meat that my boyfriend had was really good, flavorful juicy, and practically melted in your mouth. All of our sides were great as well, especially the potatoes. Now my favorite thing? The Mac and Cheese. it was SO good. I would love if they made a dish where the main was their mac and cheese and the side was a slice of meat, that’s the dream. It was cheesy (duh) crunchy (from potato chips on top) and mouthwatering!
I haven’t been there in the day time for their meat deli, but I bet it’s amazing, looking in their case you could pick out any of their slices and they all look great.
I can’t wait to go back.

fairly affordable steaks at ok prices. everything is a la cart but most steaks are 8 oz and come in under $ 29. some cuts and preparations are better than others. i loved the culotte cut.
the sides are kind of super pricey for what you get, the quality is just ok. the roasted carrots were delicious but o so tiny.
it’s a pretty legit semi affordable steakhouse.

An establishment made for the carnivore’s palate, as Laurelhurst delivers and caters to any meat eater’s desires. The dimly lit restaurant has an ambiance perfect for a special occasion, and or relaxed enough for a casual night out. A local Portland steakhouse, with knowledgeable and attentive staff. We ordered a couple of drinks, and the chicken liver mousse to start, one of my favorites. For dinner we decided upon the dry aged bone in NY, which was accompanied with a leek vinaigrette. The NY steak was tender and flavorful. The leek accompaniment, surprisingly, complimented the steak. The steak and greens, also had great flavors, and everything was made to our liking of medium rare.
We were taken care of the entire night, and we will always support local establishments before chains. Check out the Laurelhurst Market, and treat your carnivore self to a delectable dinner with impeccable service. You might want to call in, and make reservations, as it was busy for a weeknight.

I have been here three times now. Hmm maybe four. Dinner mostly: which was fun and relaxed and decadent but not snooty. 5 stars.
Popped in here after work but pre 5pm to meet husband and pick up some weekend meats. Their butcher case is glorious. 5 stars. Always sparkling fresh.
Had the charcuterie plate and a beer. Nice Friday pm snack.
4 stars because it was awkward. I didn’t really know what to do when I was there for a few minutes. I felt like I was in the way. I had to ask «um is the bar open? Can I sit over there?’ There is a little sign that says «order at counter» but it would be super if staff could pay a penny of attention to people walking in door and looking for direction.
Delicious pâté and we got some scrapple for home. Yeah scrapple.

AMAZZZING ! just one word to describe it! It was definitely pricy but for the portion they serve, but with every bite, it was delicious!
I got the grilled porkchop, and it was melt in your mouth most delicious piece of grilled pork I have ever had! The Mac and cheese also was very divine! Of course we had to pair it with a bottle of red wine to go with our meat entrée!
The steak frites were also deliciously well seasoned and the sauce goes so well with the steak. They definitely grill it to how you ask them to, the medium rare came just well off grilled and redness in the middle.
Definitely worth it for the delicious meal you pay for! Will definitely come again for an anniversary or birthday!
