I came here to have my wustoff santoku knife sharpened that I’ve had for years. The owner noticed the handle had some hairline fractures which he then advised to return the knife to wustoff since they had a batch of bad wood. He offered a loaner knife for no charge or deposit (since my wustoff was my only chef’s knife.)
He provided the address and said the turnaround time from shipping off the knife to having a new one would take about 2 weeks. He was correct. I am so happy to have a new knife! Thank you Hawthrorne Cutlery and Gifts!

I’ve taken my chef knife here several times to be sharpened and it’s always a wonderful three-​day wait from drop off. The knife would be sharp but not as sharp as others have done for me. The blade would also not last as it would when sharpened by others. It’s a place that sharpens knives. They also sell knives/​swords, etc. Meh…

The service here is simply outstanding. Not to mention the fantastic range of knives, sharpening supplies, etc. If you need a go-​to knife shop with sharpening services, look no further.

Awful retail experience!
Avoid avoid avoid. This is one of those places where the customer is treated like something stuck to the bottom of the business owner’s shoe.
I went into the shop and there were only 2 customers besides me. I knew what I wanted and after searching the cases fruitlessly, I wanted to ask the owner about possibly ordering a knife. I tried for at least half an hour to get this guy to acknowledge me, make eye contact, say *anything* to me. Instead he just followed the teenage girl and her younger companion around the store while they looked at the cases and pointed at things and asked random questions. I finally had to walk up, interrupt and state very clearly «Excuse me, do you have…» to him. He gave me a pinched look and said no, but they could order it. He set the catalog in front of me and walked off. I finally got the order set up, and he said it would be 2 — 3 weeks. It’s been over 2 MONTHS and not a peep from them. They’re not getting a cent of my money now.
If this guy wants to sit in his knife museum all day fine, just don’t try to play business owner — there are those of out here who are trying to get errands done with what free time we have and deserve some respect.
Obviously never going back.

I will never buy a knife nor have a knife sharpened at this place again, nor will my friends in the food industry. The people who run this establishment believe it is acceptable to use sexual violence as a way to advertise their product.
Hawthorne Cutlery placed a horrific ad in the cheap eats free insert of the WWeek depicting a naked woman whose vagina was covered in knives with the caption «eat out more».
The extraordinary insensitivity to survivors of sexual violence was profound. The image was absolutely triggering and grossly misogynist and the fact that it was published by Willamette Week was disheartening to say the least.
There are plenty of other places to buy or sharpen knives in Portland. I am extremely disappointed. Normally I strongly support local businesses, but this kind of insensitivity is so egregious and indicates such disregard for women it is frightening. I showed the ad to many people I know who have used this company before and they will look elsewhere for their cutlery needs.
*Addendum: Because Hawthorne Cutlery pays Unilocal’s fee to look better to consumers, Unilocal removed this review for them. The way Hawthorne Cutlery chooses to represent itself to the public is such an important part of how they do business that I rewrote it to better follow Unilocal’s «guidelines». I suspect because Unilocal protects any racist, misogynist company from accountability as long as they pay, they will find another reason to remove my review.

Awesome place. Picked up a beautiful Wusthof chef’s knife for my husband’s Christmas gift there and the service was great, with the added bonus that their prices are equal to Amazon. Great to be able to support a longtime Portland small business!

I’m very lucky to have a wife who will come up with a great idea, and then say «get me this for (insert gift-​giving occasion here)». In 2013, she decided that we needed a selection of better quality, go-​to knives for daily use. Instead of blindly grabbing a department store set, where half the knives would never be used, we had a fantastic consultation at Hawthorne Cutlery, where we ended up with just the right sized chef’s knife for us, plus multiple paring and small utility knives. In addition, we wound up with a steel for keeping the edges in good shape, along with instructions on how to use it. All in all, we got just what we needed, combining comfort with excellent quality (they have held up beautifully under daily use for almost a year now). My wife has not suggested anything for the current upcoming holiday, so maybe I’ll go back to Hawthorne, where I know I can also find Samurai swords…

This place makes me want to wear a ninja outfit, hide in the rafters and throw throwing stars at my enemies. I’d do just that if I werent a middle aged White dude that gets exhausted just thinking about doing that.
But seriously they do some good knife sharpening work here. $ 5 a pop, so ok priced but if the guy is in you can get same day.
I have some pretty dull knives, turning on apple skins… so worth it pre-​pumpkin carving and holiday cooking.
Great selection of cooking knives too, and bladed weapons if that’s your thing.

This place is great! Very fast, polite and inexpensive. I love chopping my veggies again! They did a great job sharpening my kitchen knives. I will surely be back and recommend this place.

I was gifted a good amount of money from a friend in which I would be able to buy myself a pocket knife for my own safety and my boyfriends peace of mind. I had no idea what I was looking for but my boyfriend has a good amount of knowledge on them. We were greeted by two older gentlemen who were more than happy to assist us. My boyfriend gave him a general description of what we were looking for and the round about cost of what we were willing to spend. The first knife he pulled out for us was the one I ultimately ended up with! It was as if the guy just KNEW! If you’re looking for any type of knife, from pocket knives to kitchen knives, these guys are the ones to go to. They know they’re stuff and will give you the proper price in which their products should be going for. I would highly recommend to friends and we will be stopping by on our next visit to Portland!

WOW, in a word!
I have a small collection of high end cutlery have dabbled a bit in blade restoration of exotic kitchen cutlery, so I have some experience with higher end Japenese blades… I immediatly found a Yanagi knife that I could not live without. a true Japanese made damascas steel blade previously owned by a professional sushi shef. I felt quite lucky to have found this this place and this knife! Besides kitchen and utility blades, these folks have a nice collection of antique edged weapons. Even though I was not a ‘buyer’ of weaponry, the folks here were kind enough to show me and my husband some of the antiques, and it was the first time in my life I was able to touch and hold a 400 year old Japanese sword. Amazing… gave me a whole new appreciation for the depth and breadth of the blade culture and craftsmanship. They carry a wide range of kitchen and pocket utility blades, and after chatting a while about sharpening techiques, I can say with certainly these guys KNOW what they are doing. Friendly staff, really neat stuff… fair and honest pricing… I have found a new home for all things edged! DROP IN and say hello… bring a treasured kitchen knife along and have them bring it to a level of performance you will LOVE.

When you look at the pictures, you picture the D&D crowd shop here… We came in for 1 single purpose and it wasn’t for an axe, samurai sword, hunting knife, or a bo. It was to get some top notch culinary cutlery, specifically MAC knives. The folks we talked to, were all very helpful and not what you would expect for a kitchen knife connoisseur. They were patient, funny, very knowledgeable, and I felt they were pretty honest. We looked at MAC knives & Global knives which are both high end brands. Though the Global knives were more expensive (and sleeker looking) we were encouraged to check out the cheaper of the 2 options and higher quality of the 2 options, MAC. Full transparency, I was pretty sold on MAC brands based on my research and my friend’s recommendation but I was willing to check out other knives if recommended by an expert. Hands down, the Global knives look sexier but they just didn’t feel as good as the MAC. Anyway, Hawthorne Cutlery will definitely be my go to place for additional MAC knives when I want to complete my full set of cutlery!

I stopped in to Hawthorne Cutlery today expecting to drop off my poor, abused kitchen knives for sharpening. I was very pleasantly surprised that they were able to sharpen them while I waited and for only $ 5 a knife! My knives are back to new condition and it only took about 15 minutes.

Nice owner, knowledgeable and able to refer you someplace else if he doesn’t carry it. Good sharpening service — did paper cutters too. Nice to my older kids which is appreciated (not a place for young kids). Amazing collection of sharp stuff.

Good shop with lots to choose from but not Henckels Zwilling Pro — 8″ Chef’s Knife or any Henckel knives for that matter. Still friendly and they can order me thing’s but I will look around and see. I was told that because I work in «The Industry», I can get a 15% discount.

This place came highly recommended and now I know why. I went in looking for a nice chef’s knife for a gift. I offered up that I had a budget of $ 150 – 200 expecting to be talked into a $ 225 knife. Instead of showing me something just a bit out of my range he instantly showed me a gorgeous Shun blade and offered it to me for only $ 135(which is well under the prices I found after doing a little research). I will absolutely recommend this place to anyone in the market for a good blade and no bull.

I went into Hawthorne Cutlery & Gifts to find a Christmas present for my boyfriend yesterday. I’d also brought along 3 of my daily-​use cheapo kitchen knives to get sharpened. The two older gentlemen behind the counter were super helpful and helped me find the perfect gift for my budget. They also sharpened my knives for free because their regular guy wasn’t in that day. They never made me feel stupid for not knowing exactly what I was looking for and were respectful and courteous at all times. They carry a lot of knives for every budget and they’ll be happy to tell you details about the ones you’re interested in. I’ll definitely be back to support this local business.

I actually have no idea what this shop sells, well, it seems they sell knives and some Japanese stuff. Buying any of this was not my reason for going in, and is not my reason for writing this review.
No, it’s not the «stuff» they have, but the great service they offer: knife sharpening. I finally broke down and decided to take my kitchen knives to a pro – I have a nice device for doing this at home and use it from time to time – but I knew all along that only a skilled knife sharpener with years of experience could do the job correctly. I have about half a dozen decent knives I’ve picked up over the years including an old carbon steel Sabatier I bought in about 1977 which, sadly, someone had bent the tip of many years ago.
Well, this guy brought all my knives back to like-​new shape, maybe better than new??? My treasured Sabatier is back in service and my boning knife is back to boning like never before. Wow, at least one of us is! Six knives cost 25 bucks to restore their edges. Money well spent… makes cooking so much easier.
Note to home cooks: get yer knives down to this place soon for a proper sharpening. I promise you will be glad you did. Hey, yeah, like Viagra for knives…
