I had a wonderful experience at Ginger with Joy. I have wavy/​curly hair and was tired of the approach of wash, part and layer. I let my hair grow out for a little more than two months knowing I was going to invest in a real good cut.
There should be consideration of where your curls fall and how to frame your face. Joy did an excellent job and was so excited to see my curls start to appear as she used the dry cut method on me. I am very happy with this salon.

A great hair stylist is harder to find than a new BFF! I know because I moved to Portland a year and a half ago and I researched the best hairstylists in PDX and then I moved from one to another until I found Jill at Ginger Salon. She is the perfect balance of listening to what you think you want and then gently nudging you toward what she (as the expert) recommends. She has not only helped me to grow my very short pixie cut out into a stylish cut but she did it with no OMG awkward stages that I expected to have. Although there are many stylists to choose from, few have the talent that Jill has. I am reluctant to write this because I don’t want to make it harder to get an appointment… but that would just be selfish and wrong haha. So give her a call… you will be so happy you did.

Not sure a humble Unilocal review can do my dearest Kate Pierovich the justice she and her skills deserve. Her positive attitude met with some serious color knowledge almost will my hair into magical golden locks. I’m going to go so far as to call her The Hair Whisperer. Yes, I said it. I love chatting it up in her chair and just can’t get enough her sweet face. I mean gosh! Her cuts are dope too. I HIGHLY suggest you get yourself booked asap.

This review is for Emily … I went to her last year and kind of fell off, not anything due to her but it is an inconvenient location for me and I tried another salon that was closer, and had rave reviews. Long story short, this guy has been doing a terrible job and I stuck it out for as long as I could until I saw pictures of my hair last year when Emily was doing it and sucked up the long commute and went back. She fixed my terrible layers flawlessly, cut my bangs with no issue, and will be correcting the color a bit in a few weeks.
If you have curly hair, I would definitely recommend Emily, who knows what she is doing with it and will not leave you looking like a) a Christmas Tree. b) A tiered ladder shelf c) 80s Weird Al Yankovic. That may not seem like a lot to ask for but I have been paying a guy to cut my hair like all 3 of those things so maybe it is. Anyway, try it out! Nice quiet location in the Alphabet District, walking distance to the pearl and to NW 23^rd for coffee.

Mandy has cut and colored my hair for many, many years. I have a short cut and she always styled it so even during the grow out stage it looked great. The rest of the staff is fun and nice– cute salon!

My hair was butchered after going to a different place the week before. I was squeezed in on a Sunday and Jill completely fixed my hair and have me the look I wad going for! Pricey, but totally worth it

Deanna and the ladies take care of you, not just your hair! I have been going there consistently for over 2 years and I look forward to each visit with Deanna. You know they must be doing something right because they’re always very busy! I even turned my sister on to Ginger Salon, so whenever she visits from out of town, she always makes 2 stops: Powell’s and Ginger Salon. 5 stars for sassy cuts and even sassier girl-​talk. It is not to be missed!

I had an excellent experience at Ginger on Lovejoy. I saw Joy for a basic layered haircut and I am super happy with the results. My hair is quite fine and very difficult to cut well.
First, my experience at the salon was excellent. Joy was funny and friendly yet professional. We had a great early morning chat with the other stylist, her customer and the receptionist.
Next, I really enjoyed the shampoo and scalp massage (great smelling natural products — yes, please!). Joy was fast cutting my hair, yet she was very attentive and did not miss any details. I could see the shape of my hair was great and exactly what I wanted — volume, movement and slimming — as soon as Joy was done cutting.
Finally, why I sat down to write this review is that today about a week after my appointment and without extra styling, my hair is super cute. It has excellent shape, which makes me look and feel beautiful, it’s bouncy and it has volume. Love it! Thanks Joy, see you soon.

I came in here the other day for a first time appointment with Mandy. She was amazing! She’s really personable and gave me exactly the cut that I wanted. I will definitely be back to get color done!

I have literally never had such a positive hair experience. My hair is fine, curly, and fairly thin. I have been fighting with my hair for years. I have always dreaded getting my hair cut. Usually when I visit a salon, I am told what is wrong with my hair, and that a short cut really is best for me. On a good day, I would leave feeling like I had lost the genetic lottery, but that my cute cut disguised that fact.
Not today. Today I visited Emily at Ginger Salon, and my hair-​world has been turned upside down! I left the salon feeling like I have AMAZING natural hair. Emily was professional, personable, and knowledgeable. She gave me low-​maintenance styling tips that fit my lifestyle and empowered me to love the hair I’ve got!
This is, with no exaggeration, the best hair experience I’ve ever had.

Umm yes kate pierovich is a f****** hair goddess! Yaaas. Lol love kate love my hair! Anyone who downs on kate is gonna deal with me! But yes I still love Kate and I still love this salon. Tip to returnees book your appointment in advance apparently everyone really loves Kate!

I had my long hair cut short which always takes a leap of faith. As soon as Nichole cut my hair I knew I had made the right choice! 3 weeks later I’m still receiving compliments on it. I won’t go anywhere else from now on!

I felt like the star I always wished I could be because of Ginger Salon. Mandy Z. was my stylist. She’s the coolest. Very professional. Very personable. Did a splendid job.
I have thick curly hair and am usually afraid of getting it cut. Mandy made me feel at home and even got me to do something different than I typically would with my hair and I love it! Thanks Mandy! Thanks Ginger!

I am a normal mid 20’s girl. I hate spending a lot of money on something that might not be worth it. We all know how hard it is to find someone who knows exactly what you want done to your beautiful head of hair. Fortunately for me i got sick of wasting my money on groupons with stylists that did not deserve my time or expenses. But, i decided to make an appointment at ginger salon because of the reviews i read on Unilocal (self promotion!) .
Nikki did not disappoint!!! I showed her some pics, she cut my hair (it hasn’t looked this good in almost 10 years) and she picked the color which was a rich red color melt to a copper. STUNNING!!! when i saw myself in the mirror i decided i’m never going anywhere else again to get my hair done. Nikki was very nice and professional, i loved what she did with my color and cut. If you find yourself pondering «what should i do with all this hair?» go see Nikki, she’ll make you feel better!

I think i may have found my favorite salon. Thanks Stina for a gorgeous elegant haircut. Just what I needed. And the price is unbeatable. Will visit again before my wedding~

I got a haircut and color from Stina, and I really like the color she chose for me. I’ve been vacillating wildly on potential hair colors for quite a while, and what I really wanted was for someone to decide for me. She chose a lovely dark red-​brown, and it brings out my coloring (pale skin, green eyes) so much better than the blah medium brown I had! She took into consideration the fact that my hair’s been weak for a long time from a health issue, and went with a plan for now and moving forward that will be gentle with it.
My only reason for giving her four stars is the haircut, although it looks good: she cut an inch or so from the bottom so that I’d have a stronger line (which I like), and then about two inches from my layers. I wish she had asked or even told me her plan for the layers before doing it — I’ve been painstakingly growing out my fragile hair for several years now and I wish she hadn’t taken so much off. Like I said, it looks good, but I’m still very attached to growing out my hair and I’m a bit bummed that I’m missing that hard-​won length on the top layers. (ETA: I just tried to put it in a half-​up hairdo and the top layers are too short now. :-/​)
Overall, though, she did a great job, and she was very pleasant to talk with while she worked. Thanks!

Emily is my favorite hair dresser I’ve ever had!!! Not only does she do an AMAZING job every time I go in but we have a blast while I’m in her chair. I recently went from shoulder length hair to a pixie and when I left Emily recommended that I take a week to see how it feels and come back if I needed any changes done. I ended up coming back for a few adjustments and loved that she had offered that first so that I didn’t feel awkward making another appointment so quickly. Every client I’ve ever seen leave this salon has beautiful hair and a happy smile.

I just got back from my haircut at Ginger Salon and OMG! I love my haircut so much!
I moved to Portland a year ago and being the new kid on the block I was a bit hesitant to get a hair cut because I haven’t found my match. Ladies and gents you know what I mean… it is always scary and intimidating when your searching for that perfect match. Sometimes it takes trial and error for most of us to finally find it. I know that it happened to me a few times and it is not the best feeling in the world to pay for a haircut you hate. Well enough of me and let’s get down to the real review.
I decided to make an appointment with Stina because of all the great reviews here. I got to the salon and was greeted by her and since I was a bit early I had to wait for my time. She offered me coffee or water while I waited and since my appointment is in the earlier part of the day, I choose coffee.
So finally, the moment I’ve been waiting for! She called me to her chair and asked me what I had planned for my hair. I told her what I wanted and soon she was chopping away. We made conversations. you know… that first meet up questions and answers. We also discussed about my hair and scalp issues and she gave me great advice for what I have currently going on. Btw, super awesome advice!
Well of course, you all know what happened next! It turned out to be the best hair cut I’ve had in a while! Stina is so talented! I was actually speechless after seeing my cut… All I kept saying is «oh wow… oh my gosh!.. wow!» hahaha. I guess that shows how muchI love my haircut.
She was also not pushy about hair products, I’ve had stylist who made you feel like you have to buy the product they use on you but Stina was not like that at all. She mentioned a few products while we chatted away but did not push me or made me feel like I have to get at that time. However, I am interested of getting the voluming spray she used, the lavender scent is mesmerizing!

Tonight I had my hair cut by Kady and this is seriously the best haircut I’ve ever had. After months of being afraid of salons from bad experiences, I needed to cut it for joining the military. I needed a cute but conservative haircut and she listened to my requests and gave me a perfect bob with just enough edge to get away with it! My brother went with me to the salon, and he was so impressed with her work that she is going to cut his hair next. I’m only sad I waited so long to have Kady cut my hair; her skill, humor, and light heartedness were delightful!
Oh yea, and the mirrors and lightening are an instant confidence booster
