John Dipietro Custom Tailor & Custom Shirts

Talking to John, he seemed like a great guy. He makes handmade suits for most of the philly sports players. (I think my hubby was hoping to run into them.) He does everything by hand and that is what made me think it was okay to pay $ 20.00 each for 5 pairs of kids pants that needed to be hemmed. ($ 100.00 total). The work seemed to be great and John was punctual with pick up and expected my son to be there to make sure that everything fit properly before we left. He told me he wouldn’t cut the pants, he would leave the extra on the inside so that I could have them taken down if i ever needed to. About half way into the year 3 out of 5 pairs of pants lost the hem. I refused to take them back and pinned them up. I could see if i paid 5.00 for a so-​so tailor but I paid (20.00) what i thought was alot per pair. It should have lasted the whole year at least. I would honestly go somewhere else.

So I just started looking to purchase a suit, and because I have an odd combination of size and weight, I needed to speak to a few tailors to find out what was my best path. Besides John, and another tailor up the road, most tailors seem to have no clue what they’re talking about.
With John, its different. This guy is your definition of a South Philly, Old School, Italian tailor. He makes all his suits by hand, and the attention to detail is just insane. While I do not have the means to pay for him to make me a suit from scratch (which when I do, hopefully he’ll be the guy) after chatting a few minutes he was more than willing to explain to me the in’s and out’s of a suit, what could work for me off the rack, and what he would do to help make it look as close to hand made as possible. He didn’t have to say anything except «you can’t afford me». The guy loves what he does, is obviously one of the best, but he’s also super nice.
Better than the suits that he makes is his shop, the atmosphere. There’s so much history from this city in there, and in his stories. This man has made suits for everyone from Eagles HOF’r Pete Retzlaf to Ed Snyder and Gene Hart and countless others in between.
If you can afford to have him make you a suit, or even a few shirts, I say go for it. You’ll be hard pressed to find a nicer, more talented tailor in the city.
