History

Established in 1979.

The Splendor of Zohar is evident through its dedication to promoting dance as an art form in the community and as a catalyst for personal development and academic achievement in youth.

Equipped with theatre lighting, the studio is available to community members and artists as an intimate performance space as well as for classes, workshops and rehearsals. Zohar’s professional teaching staff have been serving the Palo Alto area since 1979.

Since 1985, Zohar has brought the art of dance to at-​risk youths. IndepenDANCE transforms youths through dance classes that engage and excite.

Juvie Jazz was implemented in 1995 to make dance and its positive benefits available to incarcerated youths. Working with the highest security units in Juvenile Hall, dance gives these young men and women the opportunity to express themselves in a positive and creative activity that encourages these youths to work together and grow as individuals.

Business Owner

Ehud founded Zohar Dance Studio in 1979, and it is his artistic vision from which all artistic activities and programs continue to evolve. received his degree in dance from the Institute of Art in Haifa, Israel, and studied with Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham, Robert Joffrey, Gus Giordano, and Luigi in New York, performing as a soloist and principal dancer in Europe, Canada, and the United States. As part of his vision for children to apply the benefits of dance education to their academic advancement, Mr. Krauss initiated IndepenDANCE, an important offering for K-​8 children in under-​served communities. In 1995, he started Juvie Jazz for incarcerated youths in the Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall. In 2000, the IndepenDANCE program was extended to children with special needs (including autism and ADD). Ehud’s passion for dance is communicated through classes that inspire, motivate, and move the individual. Ehud Co-​Directs and teaches Jazz dance at Zohar with his wife Daynee.

I want to say that Adrienne Parker Foley’s contemporary dance classes at Zohar are AMAZING! Her classes are energetic and uplifting and absolutely addicting!
I’ve seen a wide variety of dancers with different backgrounds here and Adrienne makes the class work for all. After taking 6 – 8 weeks of contemporary, I can honestly say that it has added another dimension to my classical dancing and I have made several technique breakthroughs in both classical and contemporary because one feeds off of the other. I feel so much stronger and more dynamic and, honestly, I don’t think my dance training would ever feel complete again without some classes from both disciplines.
If you have any interest in trying contemporary, now’s the time to try it!

There is a teacher who has been born to teach dance-​and life. I would like everyone in the world to find themselves at a ballet barre being taught by Kristine Elliott. She demands, encourages and embraces hard work and discipline for her pupils-​from little to big, young to old, and all the in between.
AT any age– what happens when you take up ballet is that you find yourself in a mirrored world of glittering past history and future sequined possibilities led by grace.
Mme. Elliot has danced with the best and shares what she knows with South AFrica, Stanford Universittym Zohar and us! We are all better for it.

I’ve taken classes at Zohar from time to time. What I’ve seen Zohar have, which most other dance schools in the immediate area don’t, is a very loyal and steadfast community of dancing participants. Dance really is a freedom for those who go to Zohar, and when they perform in Bay Area shows, that expression is refreshing and infectious. You might forget that you have a day job to get back to, after you take class :)

It can be hard to find good classes for experienced adult modern dancers south of the city, so I was happy to find Zohar in Palo Alto. I’ve been taking classes here for over ten years, and I really appreciate both the classes and the community of dancers. It’s well-​run, and all the teachers are great!

I take ballet with Marney regularly, and I just love her class. I feel challenged (and I have been training for 25 years), but her corrections are always given in a way that builds you up. I have also gotten to know Daynee and Ehud, and they are simply marvelous people. Whenever someone asks me where to go for good dance training on the peninsula, I quickly refer them to Zohar. I am also now bringing my own dance students to Zohar for extra training during our off-​season.

I attended a weekend workshop event here featuring a great Egyptian artist… and this was a fabulous place to have held it. The space well accomodated everyone, the mirrors were plentiful, and we had a show on one of the nights, with raised seating and lights! What a dream for a dance studio. Wish I owned it.

Marilyn Trounson (Marny) teaches ballet here!!! (Mon, Wed and soon Fri mornings.) Marny graduated from the Royal Ballet School and performed principal roles with the Royal Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet. That was at least 25 (or 30?) years ago. Watching her demonstrate can be so mesmerizing that you forget to learn the beautiful combinations! Marny is an incredible, and the BEST, ballet teacher I have ever had! She taught and was Ballet Mistress for many years at Western Ballet.
Marny’s classes are always soooo enjoyable! Her pointers are so spot on and she is so generous and kind with her pointers. The way she inspires and motivates the whole class is truly amazing. I always come out of class soaked in sweat but completely high.
Ballet students of almost any level (except very beginners) or any age (except the very young) should do fine in this class. I’ve seen anywhere from fairly inexperienced dancers to professionals who are currently dancing in major ballet companies in class. In addition, Marny also gives private lessons to dancers of all age and levels.
The people who come to this class are also very friendly and inclusive.

the teachers here are incredible. great dancers don’t necessarily make great teachers, but being a teacher myself, i admire the passion, instruction, patience shown to everyone. Ehud & Daynee are the owners/​teachers with decades of master class experience.
big spacious dance area, lots of parking, great music, great lighting, the chance to meet great friends & just have fun. getting into good shape is also a big plus

The instructors are high quality and really care about teaching you to dance, but they also teach with warmth and humor I’ve found unusual in dance teachers. The choreography is challenging and inspiring. In a sport that is so much about appearance, the atmosphere in some studios can get a bit shallow, but Zohar always keeps it deep and authentic.

Almost 25 years ago, as I walked along the alley behind the «old» studio on California Street, I could see some wonderful dancing going on behind the double doors leading into Zohar. I hadn’t had any classes in about 15 years, but knew that this was where I wanted to take classes. The warm up does its job of opening the joints and ligaments, progressing logically into the work across the floor and the combinations. The music used is varied and always interesting, and the choreography is both challenging and great fun.

A friend referred me to Zohar Dance Studio last fall because I had been looking for a studio to dance at that would have welcoming classmates, good teachers, challenging routines, and adult classes. I decided to take her advice and tried out a class. It was fantastic! The classes are challenging and the teachers focus on the dancers having good technique. They take time to help all students in the class and give good feedback on what you need to work on. It did not take me long to feel like I was a member of the class community. I try to go to class as much as I can. Zohar is a great place to dance.

Coming back from Los Angeles, I found Palo Alto extraordinarily quiet, which is perfect for rest and meditation. However, after a while, this does not seem to go along with the personality of ardent young adults. By a random chance, I walked in this dance company while I was taking a walk around our house. I felt the energy all over again. I could not believe how I can find such a place in a quiet residential neighborhood.
The coach, Zohar, is a very experienced, intellegent, and grogerious guy. He teaches in a very healthy way to help students exercise both physically and mentally, and how to deliever the expression of the music through the aesthetic beauty of body launguage.
The studio offers Jazz, modern, ballet classes. Jazz and modern classes are on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday; Ballet is on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. For more detailed schedule, check out the website. It’s $ 13−15/class, depends on how many and what type of class you take.
