Kind of a hole. The complete opposite of Ra. Service was a tad slow but very friendly. Food was excellent. The sushi chef was funny. Will definately return again. Wish I would have found this place earlier!

Don’t judge a book by its cover! A cover meaning its spot in a strip mall. I don’t get sushi often, and when I do — I try not to go to a place that’s landlocked. But we’re in the middle of the country so there’s really nothing we can do about it but hop on I-435 and head towards the dirty fluorescent back-lit signage. Ichiban has a vast variety of sushi options. I would definitely recommend the spicy salmon roll. It’s fried slightly, adding that subtle crunch. Can’t go wrong with the spicy tuna roll or the Philadelphia. Looking forward to my next visit!

Forget what your eyes see when you walk in. The décor is a little dated, but you wont be there to eat the decorations anyway. Definitely the best sushi I have had in the KC area. And one of the best sushi places I have been to in the last 5 years including the time I lived in Los Angeles where the fish couldn’t get much fresher. Try the specialty rolls for a wonderful journey through your taste buds. My personal favorite is the sin city roll. But don’t forget to leave room for the red snapper(I always try to save that for my last bite). If you like it spicy, let them know and they can fire it up. Or, if you do not like the heat, they will tone it down for you.

Moving to Kansas from Hawaii, I didn’t have very high expectations about ANY seafood place, let alone a sushi joint, which requires especially fresh fish. Imagine how happy I was to discover Ichiban Sushi, which provides good sushi at a reasonable price. Our entire family loves sushi, and so eating sushi can get expensive quite quickly for us. I have been there for lunch and dinner, sit down and take out, and have been pleased every time. Their rice is well seasoned and done correctly — sticky but yet still individual grains — not the glutinous soggy mess that I have been served in other area sushi restaurants. I have had both their nigiri and makimono including California roll, tamago(egg), ebi(shrimp), unagi roll(eel), salmon skin, dragon roll, spider roll, caterpillar roll, Philadelphia roll, ika(cuttlefish), spicy tuna roll, and more… I’ve sampled quite a bit from their menu. Their tuna nigiri is really awesome, as is their salmon nigiri. Fresh, clean, and the fish has that great silky feel in your mouth. Probably the only item I have had from Ichiban that I did not feel was very good was their house salad, which is similar to those served in many teppanyaki steak houses — basically lettuce in a ginger dressing. The ginger dressing was not very good — watery and bland — and the greens were pretty flavorless. But then, I don’t go to Ichiban for their salad! To top it off, Chang and his wife are friendly and happy to accommodate some minor modifications to our order. If we want masago(fish eggs) or not, he has always gotten our order right. He works right in the open so you can see your sushi being made, and he makes an artistic presentation of the sushi when we have dined in(sushi should not just taste great but look great IMO). This is by far our favorite sushi place in the Kansas City area.

i’ve been to every sushi place in kc, mo and this place is hands down the worst that i’ve been to. i work nearby and on the occasion over the last 8 years or so i’ll get a hankering for sushi and be stuck with this place. first off, the owner and his wife are very friendly, and i’ve never had a problem getting served quickly. that has nothing to do with why i’m giving them a poor review. first off the fish is small, and usually has a very bad aftertaste to it. second off, every single time i’ve been there, the rice is undercooked. now i don’t know about you, but if the rice is crunchy and the fish tastes bad, i’d stop going there, right? well, i guess i’ve finally learned my lesson after about 10 trips over the last 8 years i’ll never go back.

The décor could use an update, but the welcome is warm and the sushi is good. Summer weather puts me in the mood for sushi — it just seems like such natural hot weather food! This evening I ordered a-la-carte and the resulting total wasn’t cheap, but it had been a while since I’d had sushi and I was in the mood. I started with a bowl of miso soup and a cucumber salad. This was followed by eight pieces of nigiri sushi(fish on top of the rice) and eight pieces of maki sushi(rolled sushi). I sampled white tuna, red snapper, shrimp and eel for the nigiri, and got an order of the passion roll for the maki. The passion roll is a bit like a California roll, but with salmon instead of cream cheese. I found myself with a bit more room available, so I ordered six more pieces of nigiri — two each of smoked salmon, white tuna and red tuna. By then I was positively stuffed, and ready to waddle out! The selection of fish seems to be excellent, and I’ll be back. You’ll find Ichiban in the small shopping center on the southeast corner of College and Quivira, across the street from JCCC. As well as sushi, the menu offers noodle dishes, and(at lunchtime) bento boxes. Also there’s a selection of vegetarian sushi, so there’s something for everyone! Enjoy!

Trendy? Nope. Posh? Nuh-uh. Astonishingly fresh fish, expertly prepared, at reasonable prices? Oh yes. I’ll be back, you betcha.

A friend introduced me to this place and I love it! It’s a family business and once you get to know them, such great people. I have my favorites; spicy tuna or salmon rolls and the Volcano roll; a spicy tempura roll that is delightful. I now go in and just ask him to make something spicy and I’m never disappointed. The only small downfall is that the ventilation isn’t to great so sometimes depending on what is being cooked, you can leave smelling a little like the resturant.

When you’re stuck about as far away from an ocean as you can get, finding a decent sushi place for a reasonable price can be a real challenge. To top that, you’re also probably not expecting to find the best sushi in the city in a dive-y little restaurant tucked away in a small shopping center in Overland Park. This little gem definitely proves true the old adage about judging books by their covers. Ichiban is hands-down my favorite sushi place in the entire Midwest. The fish is fresh and delicious, the prices are reasonable, and the owner, Chang, is the nicest guy ever. Easily the most personable chef I’ve ever had the pleasure to interact with, he’s the type who will talk your ear off if you engage him. He can also tell when you and your company just want to be left alone to chat, so his gregariousness is never bothersome. I highly recommend the crunch roll and the spider roll. Thinking about either of these instantly makes my mouth water. The inari here is also good, if you’re a tofu fan, and their unagi is tasty as well. Anything with that as the fish ingredient is bound to be delicious. One of the neat things about coming here is watching Chang do his thing. He has an open sushi bar where he creates each plate right in front of you, so you can see how fresh the ingredients are and watch him put your dishes together while you wait. It’s the reason I almost never get takeout, opting instead to dine-in and see him work his sushi magic. Between this and Kokoro Maki House, I’ve made a new personal rule: never turn down an opportunity to try a sushi place just because it’s in a strip mall!

I love this place. I first ate there on my first date with my boyfriend… that was 4 years ago. The couple that owns the place are absolutely wonderful, and the sushi, soups and tempura here are wonderful– very fresh. I’ve gotten pin bones at a lot of other sushi places… NEVER here. Would recommend this place to anyone… I have never had a bad meal here in 4 years.

What a nice little surprise! This is one of those places that doesn’t look wonderful from the outside but has grand food. I ordered several pieces of fish(red snapper, tuna, smoked salmon, and something else I can’t remember…) all was fresh and fantastic for Midwest standards. The Hot & Spicy Raman Noodle soup wasn’t bad either. The noodles were a little too much like the cheap packaged noodles, but wasn’t bad with the spiciness and vegetables. I thought it was cool that another customer wanted some type of Asian ice cream but they didn’t have it. The owner disappeared for a few minutes and returned back to their table to inform them to return next week and they would have some for sell. This is kind of a «mom and pop» place. Nothing fancy, no gimmicks… just good sushi. I would love to see this place get some more business, so stop in and see what you think!

I am not certain what happened with the previous reviewer, as I’ve eaten at Ichiban many times over the past 3 – 4 years that I’ve lived in KC, and have always had wonderful service and excellent sushi! I’ll admit, the service can be slower when the place is packed full, but I’m willing to wait for my favorite sushi in KC, and I’ve never felt that any of the waitstaff, which is usually one of two ladies, were rude or not happy to have me and my friends in their establishment. On the contrary, after a couple of visits, they even remembered what I like to drink, as they did with several of my friends! I have tried sushi at many other local establishments, not to mention places in Minneapolis, Chicago, Omaha, Lincoln, Wichita, Denver, Boulder, etc etc etc… and Ichiban ranks at the top of my list for quality. I’ve referred many of my friends to Ichiban, and they have all told me that they loved the place and have become repeat customers there. Overall, probably my favorite place to go out for a meal in the KC area!

I went once last year and was very disappointed. I tried it again and quickly realized why I don’t like this place. The waitperson was rude and acted put upon to wait on us. The rolls weren’t fresh tasting and were poorly executed. They do not have much in the way of a lunch menu either. I was surprise at the lack of variety on their menu.
