This place is incredible! The portions are great, service is excellent, and the food is fantastic! Please get there early for lunch because it fills fast! Jason, Andrew and the crew do a top notch job! My only issue would be the size of the place, but because it’s so good they are generally always full. Do try it, and if you can’t get in… it’s worth the wait /return.

5 stars for FOOD, 5 stars(of my food choice) for PRICE, 5 stars for Staff & Service. I only eat Sashimi, Nigiri and Ramen at Japanese restaurant. So my 5 stars is base on Sashimi & Ramen experience only. The BEST deal on the menu is Assorted Sashimi Lunch $ 15.95, I will always order this when I visit UNI. *********************************************** Our order on last Saturday(2016.02.06.) * Lunch Assorted Sashimi — $ 15.95 — Fish quality are excellent! * Ika Sansai -$ 4.95 — octopus meat is very tender. * Daikon Maki — $ 5.95 — combination fish wrapped in a very thin Daikon skin. Must have. * Tuna Tataki — $ 7.85 — Yum, very fresh and tasty. * Seafood Ramen: $ 12.95 — noodle is authentic and really good, not instant noodle. *********************************************** I WILL come back here a lot as I know Jason learned his skills from the best teacher(previous boss) and he orders the excellent quality fish from right suppliers(not the cheap one). PS. Call in to make reservation before you come, especially is at weekend.

The first time I came the portions were very small.(I ordered the lunch special rolls) it was extremely busy and packed. As I sit here awaiting my bill, I received much larger portions. I got a complimentary spicy crab salad and it was fantastic. Loved it. This is my go to sushi place.

This place is wonderful. It is intimate and cozy. The service is friendly and prompt. I love their hamachi kama. I always order this dish at any Japanese restaurant if they have it, and this place has the best one in town. The portion is generous and the price is affordable. If they are out of the hamachi, the salmon kama is almost just as good. The sushi that I have tried is decent, but I always order the kama if it’s available.

Great sushi restaurant! It’s on the smaller side but well worth any wait. Prices are extremely reasonable and the food is amazing! Will be going back again soon.

I eat here weekly, best sushi in KC. Consistently perfect from the miso soup, the salad, the crab salad(YUM) and the rolls. It is also a bargain, and the service top notch.

Growing up in Japan, being half Japanese I get skeptical when it comes to Japanese places and sushi here in Kansas. I even almost judged them for having crab rangoon, but their rolls are pretty tasty! Very nice presentation as well! Awesome lunch specials and overall really delicious food! Definitely recommend this place!

So, I ate at Sushi Uni quite a few times(at least once a week for the past four months) before I decided to write this review, but I think I have a pretty good grasp on the place by now and can tell you the following: Décor: This leaves a lot to be desired. The place is so small you can feel the hot or cold air coming in every time someone opens a door no matter where you are sitting. Couple this with a large, awkward half-wall that serves no purpose when you walk in, and seats in the hallway right outside of the bathroom. Food: The sushi rolls, soup and crab salad are amazing. The food here is definitely five stars. Price: Lunch specials are cheap with lots of food. Dinner is priced about the same as other sushi joints in town. Service: This depends on who your server is. Crab salad samples are given to some tables but not others with no rhyme or reason behind who they’re given to. I’ve been late back to work from lunch because I had to wait for a server to bring a bill back and forth to me to figure out how to divide a bill in half(and also had to wait 10 minutes on a separate trip to remind the same guy to bring back the receipt that I sign so I could pay my bill and leave). There are a lot of great things about this place and the food is outstanding, so I keep coming back. It’s definitely some of the best sushi you are going to find in KC.

Sushi Uni is a great small sushi restaurant that is not as expensive as some of the sushi restaurants downtown. It has a great friendly happy vibe to it. We went in, the restaurant was packed, every table that we could see was seated, but we were greeted immediately and they offered us a two person table in this little hallway that they have, which might sound weird, but I loved it. We had our own little sushi restaurant to ourselves. The server, Ryan, was great and very attentive. The sushi was beautiful and the spicy crab salad was delicious! We will definitelyyy be back!

Sushi UNI was a savior on a Monday lunch hour. After planning to go to Sushi Mido for a work lunch and failing to check their hours before heading over, I scrambled to find another sushi restaurant. We decided to head over to Sushi UNI after seeing their lunch menu online. It was a good decision. I had only been to Sushi UNI once before about a year ago and I do remember being satisfied. Knowing that they offer a great lunch deal makes this place even better. I suggest heading over to their website to check it out but to summarize, Sushi UNI has a sushi roll lunches served with two, that’s right TWO pieces of crab rangoon and a choice of soup or salad. Choose from one roll or up to three rolls with varying prices. Their three roll lunch special is under $ 12 which is quite a bargain. The only catch is that they only have a select number of rolls on their lunch menu. Thankfully I found that they have a good variety and choice. I found their Spider Roll to be delicious as well as their Salmon Katsu Roll. I guess I have a thing for crispy texture. I did have their tuna roll as well as sort of a test to see how fresh their fish was and I thought it was okay. One thing to note is that they give a very generous portion of their soup and you have the choice between hot and sour, egg drop, or miso soup which was a surprise to me. My coworkers fancied the hot and sour soup which had a pretty decent kick to it compared to other restaurants who serve it. Although Sushi UNI is a sushi restaurant, they also serve Chinese-style dishes such as fried rice, lo mein, and other typical Western style Chinese entrées. Their lunch special also includes their Chinese dishes. Therefore it is basically the perfect spot if you’re torn between Japanese and Chinese cravings. Sushi UNI has delicious food and priced just right. Their restaurant is on the small side but am not sure if it gets incredibly busy. If you’re around the Lenexa area and are wanting some sushi, I would definitely recommend Sushi UNI, tucked away in a plaza next to a bar and grill.

I tried this place thanks to Unilocal. The reviews are true: It is tiny. It is delicious. It has AWESOME, I repeat AWESOME lunch specials which include crab Rangoon and sushi. Just go here. I hope the review about change of ownership isn’t true, because this is my new go to sushi joint.

«Good sushi and where to find it in KC» — that’s been my underlying motivation since I’ve moved from NYC. While there have been a few mishaps with my seafood adventures in the Midwest(note to self — do NOT use frozen supermarket lobster tails in a lobster boil), thanks to some internet research and good olé’ asking around, I’ve encountered some sushi options in the«passable to pretty good» range. My experience at Sushi UNI fell on the«pretty good» side of the spectrum. Sushi UNI is inconspicuously located in a generic strip mall, as I’m quickly learning many good ethnic restaurants are. To me, the locale doesn’t matter — the quality of the food is paramount! So how did Sushi UNI stack up? First, props for providing some comp dishes — we received a squid salad(we returned again and weren’t given this — maybe they had excess? And then another time we got crab rangoon — a bit random) — it was delicious. As well as an equally satisfying salad of julienned veggies, imitation crabmeat, tempura crunchies and sesame seeds — okay, maybe not suuuper authentic, but I still dug it. Now onto the sushi — we got a few rolls(dragon, spicy crunchy tuna) — the rice was well seasoned, the fish tasted fresh, and the pieces were cut to manageable size(one of my pet peeves is when rolls are cut into GIANT pieces). We also ordered a sushi combo, and again, the fish tasted fresh and of good quality. Sushi UNI won’t necessarily win points for ambiance but the service was warm and friendly, and the sushi delicious, at least on par with the East Village joints I used to drop into in NYC. I have to hand it to you, KC(or Lenexa, Kansas, to be exact), you do have some good sushi options!

Best sushi in Kansas City. This place is a cozy, little restaurant. I think there’s about 14 tables in the whole restaurant. The sushi is fresh, which was a worry of mine with being in the mid west. Top items– the UNI roll, Daikon roll(rice less and amazing), and the spicy crab salad.

After a terrible experience at another sushi place I was a little hesitant to jump back on the sushi train. I had heard great things about Uni’s and decided it was time to get my fins wet again… Oh man, it was Aaaaamazing! Don’t be thrown off by the tiny restraunt. While there is only about 7 tables inside we were seated immediately during the dinner rush. I of course had to grab a bowl of egg drop soup(I think it tells alot about a place) and it was fantastic. We were served complimentary seafood salad which was perfectly flavored. We ordered three sushi rolls that looked just as good as they tasted. Our pics for the evening… The Snow White(best I think I’ve ever had), the Rock N’ Roll and The UNI Roll. I would actually recommend them all. Everything was great… the service, the food and the location. I guess I’ll be rolling back here again soon ;)

I believe I have found my new favorite sushi place. so small though, man, so very very small, our wait at 1 oclock was 20 minutes and it was closer to 25, but man was it worth it. delicious giant pieces of fish, some of the best crab Rangoon ever, very decent lunch and dinner prices and fairly quick service. added bonus for the Asian message place next door. SCHWING! I will be back.

This used to be Babo Teriyaki where I would get takeout phở…I was sad to see them close, but I am happy that a sushi place has moved in! When Sushi Mido was closed on a Monday(lame), we came here after a quick Unilocal search. I don’t get all the complaints about size…it is what it is, and if you want a nicer experience with more space, go to Edokko down the street, ya know? I much prefer lower prices and exponentially friendlier service that I get at Sushi Uni, and I rarely grab sushi for a «nice dinner» atmosphere. The lunch specials are comparable to Sushi Mido in price and product. Honestly though, I prefer the sushi at Mido. It is more flavorful and seems bigger and fresher. The hot n sour soup and the crab rangoon were both delicious all around, and I don’t think I have a preference on either location for these items. I am going to return to try the noodle lunch special, and also, just because people were nice here. Not to say I will not have sushi here again, because I will do that, too. It is closer and less pretentious than Mido, and that will grab my business on many days.

Very impressed with this place. It’s tiny, only six or eight tables, as well as a small sushi bar. I ordered a two-roll lunch which came with soup(the miso was quite tasty) and two crab rangoons(also tasty, light and savory.) We asked the server what his favorite roll was, and he recommended the daikon roll, which was truly fantastic — a beautiful blend of texture & flavors, held together with a paper-thin slice of radish, no rice. The spider roll was also excellent! All in all, it was plenty of food for not a ton of money, and the fish was wonderfully fresh. Service was attentive & friendly throughout. The hanging door curtain, BTW, is called«noren», and in Japan it’s commonly hung at the entrance of shops to signal that they are open for business, then taken down again at closing. I have seen them many, many times in old-school Japanese restaurants in Los Angeles, but not so often here in the heartland. Just another sign that these guys are a fairly traditional restaurant.

Sushi UNI is a fantastic little sushi place, the sashimi combo is a must. They receive shipment in every Tuesdays and Thursdays, so note those days for fresh sashimi for dinner. The owners are very friendly and there’s 2 wait staff for a tiny place, so you can expect prompt service. Give this place a try if you haven’t already. Cheers…

Continuing my search for good asian food, we ended up at Sushi UNI. First thing I noticed is that this is NOT a Japanese owned Japanese restaurant(Is there such a thing in KS)? It’s not the freshest fish but pretty good. It’s pricy if you decide to get actual sushi and not the rolls. We got… 1) Ahi Tuna Roll — Pretty good 2) Spider Handroll — comes with 2 pieces but the crab was a bit old and came with too much sauce. 3) Rainbow Roll — Good. 4) Salmon Sushi — OK 5) Miso Soup — Pretty good. They make their own miso soup! It’s NOT the dehydrated kind. :) Complimentary Spicy Seafood Salad(I think it’s called…) pretty good. It’s just imitation crab, cucumber, spicy mayo. Good service. Good sushi considering how far away we are from the nearest ocean.
