This was my first time at Phnom Penh House — I’ll be back! The food, all of it, was delicious. 2 of us wanted to try several things so ordered 2 appetizers and 2 entrees, which in the end was too much food, but they were happy to box up the leftovers for us. I was happy to learn they serve both brown and white steamed rice. It appears to be run by a small crew so it took a few minutes for someone to see we were waiting for a table, but once we were seated service was well timed. Décor isn’t much to speak of, but the atmosphere is lively and congenial. We got there for dinner around 7:15 on a Friday night — plenty of available tables(4 tables already filled), but by 8:00 it was full up and when we left at 8:30 there were people waiting to be seated.

The food is awesome. I am glad to find the little nice southeastern Asian restaurant to my new neighborhood. The servers are very friendly too.

I’m from San Francisco and so unfamiliar with the area. Thank goodness for Unilocal!I found PPH. Hot day in the Bay! Of course I was totally drawn to the cold Papaya Salad w/shrimp for a hot day. Delish — would order again Stuffed Chicken wings — my friend’s picky 3 y/o went for 3rds. so that describes without needing explanation. I also ordered the lunch special to go for the big boy. Eggplant + chicken w/Brown rice. I would definitely come back and try other items when I return to the East Bay to visit my GF. This is all take out Total: $ 28

This place has such good authentic Cambodian food! Everything is delicious and so flavorful! Definitely recommend the papaya salad, sachkor ang(beef charbroiled on skewers), and the prahok katis(ground pork served with vegetables). It’s similar to their location in Chinatown — which I also LOVE, but this place is much more spacious! Our waitress was very sweet but service was okay. The food came out very slow. The next dish didn’t come until we were finished eating the first one, and that’s basically how the whole night was. The food here is super good though, definitely want to come back here again!

Came here for lunch with some friends during the weekday. I show up first and got a table for three and was seated immediately. The man that was our server was extremely kind. He knew that we were waiting on one more friend to come and order so he was very patient with us. When our friend came in he immediately came by and took our order for drinks. For lunch I ordered the BBQ short ribs with rice and my friends had been with peanut sauce and pad thai. My friends seemed to really enjoy their meals. The only downside for me would be that the short ribs were cut extremely thin… My friend beef with peanut sauce was really good and had great flavor. I like to come here to support small family owned restaurant.

Ordered the char broiled pork with brown rice. #425. Came with a slightly sweet spicy sauce on the side. It was sooo yummy. The pork was perfectly cooked — tender and flavorful without being chewy. The sauce was delish and could have even been more spicy but was a perfect balance between sweet and spicy. The brown rice was cooked to perfection and paired wonderfully with the pork. I will be back to try the other deliciousness offered on the menu. I’m from Oakland originally and this area has changed so much. Used to be a pool hall across the street and a Nations down the street. Long gone. Now there are great and varied restaurants in the area to appeal to everyone’s palate. This is a must try.

The peanut broccoli tofu was amazing, delicious. Will be back for that! The green bean chicken had crisp tasty beans. The beef on a stick. tasted exactly the way I remember from street vendors in Asia, hot off the charcoal grill. The meat melted in my mouth. My husband reported the thin sliced pork was even tastier. The chicken fried rice was terrific, we ordered a second order to go. The white rice is sticky rice. The fried bananas were crispy on the outside, perfect with ice cream.

Eggplant eggplant eggplant! Their eggplant dish is truly spectacular. I have never tasted a better eggplant dish than Phnom Penh. I’ve been to this location since I was a child, and the owners are still the same. I love this family owned restaurant so so much, it gives me a feeling of home cook. The servers are very nice and polite. There is limited seating so I would suggest coming at an earlier time! Every time my family and I come, we also get the fried banana with ice cream! The servers can speak several languages, which I think is awesome.

Beyond fantastic! We’ve love everything we’ve tried, which is about half the menu at this point. Sustainable meat would make this a 5 star experience!

So my gf had a project for school that involved going to a Cambodian establishment, and I suggested to go eat at a restaurant. Since we were on our way to Livermore from SF, I decided to give this place a try. And we were glad we came! Cause the food was delicious!!! There are a lot of dishes on the menu that were closely related to Thai and Vietnamese cuisine. So for our visit, we ordered four dishes which included an appetizer that’s similar to banh xeo, and entrees that consisted of chicken curry, charbroiled pork, and pad Thai style noodles. My favorite was definitely the pork. It was so tender and flavorful, I couldn’t stop eating it. It had so many levels of flavors from the sweetness to the lemongrass and to the mesquite flavor of the barbecue. Everything else was also flavorful and the chicken from the curry was so tender that the meat fell off the bone easily. As far as pricing and service is concerned, our bill came out to roughly $ 40 which was very reasonable especially compared to many Thai restaurants that have their prices set pretty high. Our server was an older gentleman that was very attentive and super nice. Overall impression was very positive and I’m definitely coming back for more!

Wow. Can’t believe I’ve never reviewed them. Been coming here since they opened and before that to the Chinatown location. When I ate meat I loved their version of stuffed chicken wings — the best ones I’ve ever had. Lots of tasty filling, not too greasy and just wonderful. I also enjoyed the charbroiled chicken and pork. The eggplant with shrimp and pork is also good though it can occasionally be a little greasy. The deep fried snapper is good and my wife loves the ground up fish in a banana leaf. Now that I don’t eat meat and cannot eat tofu my choices are more limited. I still love the Char Cathew — the pad thai-like noodles and the singapore noodles. The broccoli with peanut sauce is good but a bit rich. The spicy basil rice is good. I do wish they had more vegetarian vegetable dishes. Comfortable place and really nice people. Mr. Hong will call out«See you tomorrow» when you leave.

The food seems very appetizing… I’m the first customer to come in. Was promptly seated due to the vast open tables… So I ordered their bbq chicken plate and a rice. I waited for the last 20 minutes. I SEENOFOOD. THE four other customers who came in already have their food. WTH. Nonetheless, the food is delicious and very filling made me really happy, but the problem is with the waiting. I went again on August 6. Still waiting about 20 minutes for the food to arrive. Thus the reason why I am giving it three, due to wait time.

This place was a nice spot for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The service was polite and quick, the food was good, and the ambiance was pleasant. My husband and I shared the spicy papaya salad, chicken with lemongrass sauce, and the cha ktaw(their pad Thai equivalent). Everything was decent, though nothing blew us away. The restaurant is cute, clean, and inviting. Overall, we had a positive experience here, but there was no «wow» factor.

We’re new in the neighborhood and stopped in to see what the local place was like. Wonderful! I’ve been there 3 times now. The food is well made and delicious. I’ve had eggplant and chicken and fish curry, excellent. The restaurant itself is very comfortable inside, good atmosphere, a nice place to eat. And best of all the family that runs it are very cordial and welcoming. The service is excellent. I felt like a guest that they were glad to have. They made sure I had everything I wanted and were pleased that I had enjoyed my lunch with them. Consistent all three times.

Looking for a new place for lunch and found this Cambodian cuisine restaurant in the Laurel District. Starting out with a refreshing Limeade. Tested out the chicken wings on the app menu… delicious! Topped it off with a Red Snapper dish #640. Service was a little slow, but the food was very good.

Can’t believe I never wrote a review for Phnom Penh House, since it is probably THE place in Oakland that I frequent most often, right in my neighborhood, the Laurel. I first ate at their place in Alameda and when I moved over here, it was a no brainer to make this my go-to Cambodian place. The dining area itself is not very cozy(and can get quite chilly during the winter months), but the resonably priced, delicious food and friendliness of the owners cannot be topped! My usuals: Cambodian crêpe filled with pork and shrimps, any kind of eggplant dish(holy smokyness) and every now and then a nice cocktail.

We moved into the area more then a year ago and now I must ask: why haven’t we eaten here before? We had: * BBQ Beef Spare Rib(#318) — Korean-style cut. Delicious. Only thing was there was only 4 of them so you should think of this as an appetizer… but sooo good. * Garlic basal eggplant and shrimp — special. Sauce was literally plate lickin’ good; eggplant was perfectly cooked. Shrimp were rather small and only 6 of them… but again, a delicious dish * Spicy green papaya salad — Another great dish, could have been a bit spicier but the flavors were all there and perfect. I’ve had a lot of these and I have high standards, this was great. I“m trying to cut down on sugar intake and things might have been a bit sweet, but only a bit. The service was super friendly, relaxed no rush atmosphere. Prices are totally reasonable. We have def. found a regular spot! Already looking forward to our return.

Phnom Penh House is a local gem on MacArthur! From the outside, PPH might not seem like much but, you will be surprised! The chef’s dishes have 鑊氣! I’ve never had Cambodian food before but, it seems like a fusion of Thai Lao Burmese and Chinese all fused in one. CHAKATHIW * Think Pad Thai. Think better pad thai than the ones you’ve had before. I love pad thai and this dish did not disappoint. Bomb dot com right here. Favorite dish. Just order it. SACHKORCHAAKTIS * Beef in curried peanut sauce over spinach(or whatever veggies of the day there is). Flavorful and tender meat. Not blanched and au natural. SWEETBASILFRIEDRICE * Fresh, light, and savory. Paired well with the chaa ktis! SALMONINWINESAUCE * Not overcooked. Ample amount of vegetables. Nothing bad to say but not memorable either. SLAAPMOARNBORG * Fried chicken wings/thighs. Stuffed with curried carrot/turnip slices and glass noodles(clear vermicelli). I’m not much of a fried food kind of gal so… Nothing special but very filling. I’d skip this.
