These guys are awesome! We contacted them about a small project (opening up a load bearing wall) and they were very prompt in getting back to us. They were so busy they couldn’t take on our project (love the honesty!), but they took a look at a photo, gave us an estimate on what they thought it would cost and forwarded us to an independent contractor. I am always so pleasantly surprised when companies do this and it has been so very helpful for us :) If a company is willing to be this helpful when you’re not even a customer, I can only imagine how incredible they are on a project. I look forward to being able to work with them in the future :)

KSDB recently completed an overhaul of our backyard and exceeded our already high expectations in terms of overall design, quality of the work, and ability to stay within (and often below) budget. Our project involved the removal of our deck, foundation work, relocation of our lower level laundry room, the installation of a new concrete patio and artificial lawn, and landscaping. We worked closely with architect Brian Laczko, who was wonderful all around. He spent a lot of time with us, helping us to figure out exactly what would serve our needs best and giving us a lot of valuable input. He was also great in wrangling with City officials to make the permit process as smooth as possible. I also can’t speak highly enough of KSDB’s crew and subcontractors, who were all true professionals. Outstanding work ethic and outstanding workmanship. It was truly a pleasure working with this company and I look forward to working with them again on upcoming projects.

My wife and I are thrilled with the work Kevin and his crew have done for us.
Our project was the residential conversion and complete remodel of a two-​story, 3200-​square-​foot warehouse in SOMA. The plan called for gutting the building down to the frame and rebuilding from scratch. Just about everything was custom: plaster walls, walnut floors, lots of steel details, a fully glass-​tiled bathroom, giant 12′-tall sliding glass fleetwood pocket doors to our deck, doug fir wall and stairs, and tons of custom deck woodwork for planters and the like. We moved in at the end of 2010 and absolutely LOVE our place.
Before choosing KSDB we’d interviewed a bunch of builders. Most of the contractors we spoke with were rather ho-​hum about our project, but Kevin was enthusiastic and excited by the work. This was a major reason we chose him: because it was evident that he really cares about the work they do. This turned out to be *really* important as we got started building: inevitably there are design or building challenges no one could have anticipated, as well as times when we changed our mind about something. In these cases Kevin was *awesome*: he’d propose alternatives, lay out our options as well as the pros and cons, and come up with creative solutions. Our favorite thing he would do is propose lower cost alternatives that met our program’s goals :)
The fact that they’re not just a build firm, they’re a *design* and build firm, means that KSDB are still our go-​to guys when we have a problem to solve around the house. They’re super interactive, creative, and they have great taste. Recently we’ve re-​hired them to: build a little garden for my wife, help us devise a shielding solution for our deck when for when it’s raining, to build in some extra shelving in our bathroom, and to build some extra storage for us.
We should also specifically mention that Kevin’s subs are great: our plaster turned out beautiful, the tile in the bathroom is flawless, we love the architectural steel we got, and his carpenters (including Kevin) really cannot be beaten.

I’ll keep it simple, though my praises for KSDB are unlimited. I have several experiences working with Kevin Slagle and his talented crew/​staff.
Kevin is good-​natured, highly professional and exceedingly honest in a business where these qualities seem to be lacking. Add to that, a supreme sense of design, and you have one of the coolest businesses the Bay Area has to offer.
We’re in the process of buying a fixer and you can bet that we’ll be calling these guys up for another stellar project. I can confidently say that we’d trust Kevin Slagle and his team for a ground-​up project when we decide to move in that direction.

My husband and I are building a new modern house on a beautiful lot in San Francisco. We interviewed ten general contractors, and selected Kevin Slagle Design + Build for our massive project.
Before we started the project, we were worried because we had heard so many horror stories about how stressful it is to build a house, and how much people usually fight with their general contractors. Not so in the case of Kevin’s company. We could not be more pleased with our choice, and here is why:
1. The quality of the workmanship is outstanding, even to our architect whose standards are exacting. Kevin’s crew, who consist mostly of young, lanky, vegetarian guys from the East Bay, take great ownership and pride in their work. They are meticulous in getting every detail right. We cannot count the number of times that they have gone the extra mile in their own time and on their own dime, crafting some detail of the house to perfection.
2. The quality of Kevin’s crew, and the subcontractors who work with him, is outstanding. These craftsmen are friendly and intelligent, with a warm sparkle in their eyes. To give you an idea, one of them went to Harvard Law school, but decided to become a carpenter instead. Some of them have art studios where they work in the evenings. They are not what you think of when you hear the word «construction worker’»; instead, they are people you’d feel honored to have as friends. The quality of Kevin’s crew and their attention to detail definitely lends a sense of integrity to the house that will be felt for years to come.
3. The project is on schedule and on budget. We are two months from our move-​in date, and this is exactly the point at which the relationship between owners and general contractors usually falls apart. Not so with Kevin. It is easy to communicate with him because he is so honest and committed to his word; a man of absolute integrity. He has not taken a single short cut throughout the process; instead, if anything his standards have been higher than ours. Yet, the project is on time and on budget. Because of all of this, the whole building process has been nearly pain free for my husband and me. Everything has always been explained to us upfront, and the end results have exceeded our expectations.
We cannot recommend Kevin Slagle Build + Design more highly. If you are looking for a reasonably priced, honest and high quality general contractor, you should definitely give him a call.
