History

Established in 1871.

In 1871 a steamer named The Vaquero made its first trip to a marshy lagoon for trading. Ranch owners in the Lower Bay decided from then on that the area should be called «Newport.»

In 1905 city development increased when Pacific Electric Railway established a southern terminus in Newport connecting the beach with downtown Los Angeles. In 1906 with a population of 206 citizens, the scattered settlements were incorporated as the City of Newport Beach.

Settlements filled in on the Peninsula, West Newport, Newport Island, Balboa Island and Lido Isle. In 1923 Corona del Mar was annexed and in 2002 Newport Coast, East Santa Ana Heights and San Joaquin Hills, were annexed. In 2008, after a long battle with the city of Costa Mesa, Newport Beach annexed West Santa Ana Heights.

Beaumont, CA
Beautiful beach, of course, but the parking is horrendous. We pulled into a lot and the guy working said it was $ 40. I couldn’t believe it. We went to the metered lots, along with about 5,000 other people. It was a nightmare. We ended up paying, yup, $ 40 to park in another lot. I feel so ripped off. Apparently that’s the going rate for anything within a block, unless you find a meter. Beach was super crowded on a Sunday!

Parking took about an hour for a monday. The beach was clean and plenty of food and entertainment around. Always come back every year.

San Marino, CA
We had a reservation at Mastors Ocean Club Newport Beach last Saturday night. We made the reservation through Open Table for 8:00. When we arrived people were waiting
all over the place. They tried to seat us at 8:15 not in the dining room but the bar.
There were people hanging on the chairs where we were suppose to sit. We told
the hostess that this was not the dining room but the bar and she kept telling us
that it was part of the restaurant. There were a lot of drunk loud people all around our table. We told her that we were not going to sit there. They put us at the back of the list when finially we got up and left. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. It has changed from a very classy place to a loud bar scene.

This is my favroite beach I will be there on Monday I love it it’s the best beach to go to its o e of these beaches that you can stay at forever and never want to leave have you seen the lifeguards that are there wow it draws my attention most Definitely I actually like it because it’s nice and relaxing and very well taken care of its a beach it’s always crowed expecially now it’s hot but that’s why we all go back to the water and heat we get nice tans as well or I normally do I will always go back to this beach now I have friends and ex s to go with and hang out and have a good time can’t wait to go back gonna be fun

This is a great beach… except there were clumps of black tar on the beach. Be careful walking because if you step in some good luck getting it off your feet or hands! The only thing that seemed to work to remove it is sunscreen.
You have to pay to park anywhere near the beach. It’s a $ 1.50 per hour. There are a ton of shops and places to eat. This is definitely one of the best beaches in the area. We go here because it’s one of the closest beaches to Disneyland.

Over 10 miles of beautiful clean beach, open, easy access, lifeguards and a boardwalk. Kids and adults, surfing, wading into the water, playing in the sand, enjoy the sun. Bring a chair to sit in or a towel to lay on or just come and enjoy the sand.

Finding parking at Newport Beach is like battling zombies and white walkers simultaneously aka a freaking nightmare!
Either be very, very patient in the parking lot (need to pay for the meters!) or park away from the beach and walk/​Über. Once you’re at the beach, everything is wonderful!
This beach is definitely a beach I’d enjoy long walks at. It’s clean, beautiful, and not overly crowded. Soak in the sun and take lots of pictures because it is postcard perfect. There are tons of bars and restaurants along the streets, so you can grab a bite or drink if you’re done enjoying the outdoors!

Buena Park, CA
Free parking after 6 pm, thanks to the tip of a friendly local. Love the laid back vibe at Newport and how I can just come here for half an hour to decompress. When I went on a Monday evening it wasn’t crowded and it was surprisingly easy for me to find an optimal parking spot. So far I have just taken strolls on the pier around Ruby’s, but I’m sure I’ll put my toes in the water or even rent a bike to bike along the shore sometime soon.

Awww. A day at the beach, feeling the ocean breeze. So good for the soul. I love Newport Beach, I am at peace here. It is so beautiful, God’s country filled with the Socal vibe. I love it. I feel at home and one with God, so tranquil and relaxing.
A great place to spend the day, I love the pier and all of the surrounding exquisite homes. To live so close oh man I am so damn jealous. I wonder if those people even realize? Or do they take it for granted, does it lose it’s luster? I’d like to think not.
Everytime I visit Socal this is my favorite beach to visit and I try to visit each trip. A little slice of heaven here on earth. I love the musicians there usually always is someone playing. I love the shops and restaurants. A truly serene and amazing place.
I always leave a little piece of myself when I leave here. Till the next time we meet, I can’t wait…

Norwalk, CA
This beach is a nice little spot to relax and I like to join my BF on days he surfs. I relax on the beach and enjoy the breeze. I get to people watch and on good days there are 30 surfers in the water and like 10 people near me on the sand lol. Many bring their pets and its in a cute little neighborhood so it’s pretty peaceful. You can jog here on the beach and do whatever you normally do. Parking can be way or hectic depending on if everyone is in a beach mood and turns up here. We park on the street near the street.

A beautiful beach that lived to the expectations I’ve seen in pictures. The beachfront was clean, and surprisingly empty on the Tuesday that we went. The waves were incredible, and the Sun splashing across the water only made the experience that much better. There’s also some cool experiences nearby like whale watching that that makes this spot a must go!
The only troublesome part is parking… fortunately, my friend and I went on a not-​so-​busy day, so we found free parking closeby. But if you’re going at peak times, be ready to pay some moolah or park far, far away.

Beautiful beach! There’s always people year round, whether it is during the hot summer or the cold winters, you can see surfers, people walking along the beach or by the dock, or along the food spots or shops by the beach. There’s metered parking, I think it might be $.25 for every 8 or 10 minutes, if lucky you might get some extra minutes from the prior parker.
If you ever do visit Newport Beach, DEFINITELY go to Seaside Bakery and order the Jalapeño Ham and Cheese Croissant for $ 2.75 a piece, you will love it! Make sure they heat it up so its hot and ready and the cheese will just melt in your mouth! There’s also Crab Cooker and Slapfish nearby as a well! If you are feeling healthy or fruity, theres Banzai Bowls as well! Definitely a lot of food options to choose from, as well as many souvenirs to choose from, for your friends and family!
If you are in Orange County and you are looking for a lovely, scenic beach, definitely visit Newport Beach!

Took our son today for his first time on the actual beach and dipped his water in the ocean. Nice place, there are many places to go here, and we like to go where it is a bit secluded. It was a nice warm day, not too many people and our son enjoyed it. Parking was not difficult to find at all. Nicer neighborhoods. There are some shower places around to wash off. Overall, one of the nicer beaches. Lots of little places to eat around as well. If you like crossaints, try Seaside donuts and get a ham and cheese croissant with jalapeño. Also, stop by ‘Oh those donuts’ and get a sandwich. Not the donuts, but just a sandwich and try the squaw bread and fries are delish. If you fancy, try Santa Monica seafood. It is excellent! Fresh seafood all day.

I honed my surfing skills at this beach. Nothing more awesome than driving out from college for Dawn Patrol, grabbing a bag full of donut holes from the donut shop on site, and surfing them off for a couple hours before heading back out to the Claremont Colleges for classes.
I worry that since 2005, it’s gotten a little dingier. The parking has always been hit or miss, and the presence of a free shower is awesome, but I don’t remember it being as dirty, or littered as it was when I visited again last spring. I hope people start taking some better care of this little (potential) gem.

Can’t go wrong with Newport Beach and all the activities they have to offer. Love it the most out of all the nearby by because they offer, good food nearby, shopping, entertainment, and nightlife.
Reason I give it a 4 star is due to the limited access leading in or out, cops will pull you over for no major reaso. Like no front plates or tinted windows, and parking can be very hectic or expensive.

Always a GREAT time @ Newport Beach. Hang out with all the skinny phat earth people. Getting salt water in my eye candy. Haha! Building a few sand castle’s. Eating Seafood & Mexican fish tacos… YUMZ!

This is such a beautiful beach. Now I understand why it’s so iconic. The sand here is so fine and pretty. When it gets wet, some parts would be brown and others would be black. The water is still relatively cold, but definitely warmer than NorCal’s beaches. The waves here are also really nice. They don’t go as high as those in Laguna, and the beach is pretty shallow. This makes it a really good beach for little kids because they can wonder out pretty far and the water would still be under their hips. Nevertheless, with this being an iconic beach expect to see a lot of people. Trying to find parking here is definitely a chore, and we decided that the best thing to do is just to stop and wait for someone to leave. Once you’re parked however, the beach is a lot of fun. There are also a bunch of stores and restaurants by the beach in case you need something or get hungry.
The pier is okay. It’s a bit dirty and has a lot of homeless people on it. I don’t really recommend going on it unless you want to go fishing.

Terrebonne, Canada
Southern California really has some unbelivably amazing beaches! One of my faves is Newport Beach. The sand, beach and water goes on and on, it’s your typical Cali scenery with talk skinny palm trees and miles of big white sand but cold water (unless in summer). The beach really is pretty impecibly clean also. Only some sea plants and small seashells cover the sand.
I’ve come here twice in the last six months and it’s awesome! There is metered parking, it’s not too expensive but does get busy on the weekend. Lots of nice vacation houses that straddle the boardwalk in both directions.
To me Newport Beach is your atypical beach if you close your eyes and picture what a beach should look like. The waves lap up on shore and create a foamy white froth that comes and goes. Really peaceful to sit here watch people playing on the beach or kids running on the shore. For me it’s pure relaxation coming here. You take it slow or find a speed that’s just right for you.
What I appreciate about most Cali public beaches is that there are public restrooms at the entrance to the beach (by Balboa pier). Mostly they are decently clean for a public restroom.
There are so many places to frolic in the sand in SoCal this is a great example!
